$75 for HS Reunion?

Would you spend $75 per plate to attend your high school reunion? (This doesn’t include any travel costs you might incur if you live out of town.)
nickd1980@reddit
My 10 year was $100 at a bar for finger food that included a mechanical bull. Didn't go because I didn't want to tell people I was still in school (second year junior) and wasn't close to graduating.
My 20 year was FREE. Had fun and I was hoping my crush was going to be there (the one that asked me to go steady with her back in 95 when we were 8th graders) she didn't go. She went to our 10 year though. I had fun catching with my classmates and finding out we still live in the area with me not having to flew the nest. I was hungry that night and should have stolen/ate some birthday cake that some people left that was next to us and took the REI gift cards that he left as well.
Ok-Inevitable-8681@reddit
Not a chance, didn't like most of them while I was in HS, and have never had any desire to go to a reunion ever.
DayNo5185@reddit
There's not enough money in the world to get me to go to a high school reunion.
Murphy_Dropkick410@reddit
Only paying $75 bucks if Morris Day and the Time are playing
Otherwise most you're getting is $15
Steveseriesofnumbers@reddit
Noiche noiche noiche.
FancyThought7696@reddit (OP)
Food is probably bad too lol
Steveseriesofnumbers@reddit
These days, any kind of hall rental is going to cost. You pretty much HAVE to.
I have very fond memories of my 10th reunion. The rest, not so much.
histprofdave@reddit
I wouldn't go if you paid ME $75.
BuffaloWhip@reddit
I’d pay $75 not to go.
Moon_Noodle@reddit
Seriously. I’ve got so many better things to do
TheGirlwThePinkHair@reddit
Yup, wouldn’t attend for $750.
poop-money@reddit
For real. In the age of social media I have zero incentive to go to a high school reunion for me. Anyone I cared to keep up with, I have. My highschool experience was shit anyway and I would rather forget all about that period of my life.
Reasonable_Leg_4664@reddit
I have this same sentiment. I went to my 10 year and it was insane. Som guy stripped down and gave some ladies a lap dance. It was pretty hilarious though. I didn’t go to my 20th and I feel like I’d go to the next one just to see what kind of random shenanigans happen. Idk, I come from a poor NorCal high school so it could be like a mini Jerry Springer TV episode. I miss those.
CoralQuilts@reddit
Wait was this CVHS? I swear I heard about this.
so_it_goes17@reddit
Tell me CV is Castro Valley
Reasonable_Leg_4664@reddit
No, Central Valley.
Reasonable_Leg_4664@reddit
lol 😂
Vox_Mortem@reddit
That sounds like my senior prom, honestly. Only school dance I ever went to, and they had it in the basement 'ballroom' of some Sacramento hotel. There were carriage rides but after one girl got splattered with horse poop no one else wanted to go. By about halfway through the evening there was at least three couples who were drunk and in their underwear because formals and tuxes were too uncomfortable, and I witnessed drunken sex in a corner while the chaperones were trying to deal with the underwear thing.
So my group of friends and I went to play pool at a hall called Hard Times instead.
Crambo1000@reddit
I was thankfully unpopular enough in HS not to buy into Prom being "the most important night of your life." I went without a date but hung out with a friend, wandered around the museum it was held in, and then we both just went to the beach to get away from the crowd. I'm sure other people had a good time but I couldn't tell you what they were doing.

I got basically dragged to my 10th because I was still in SOME contact with a few HS friends. My 20th got cancelled because of Covid. I didn't go to my 25th but from the pictures they posted online it looks like about 15 people went. They hadn't rented a space or anything, they were just like "show up at this bar at 6".
SoTiredYouDig@reddit
It sounds like your sentiment is pretty much the opposite.
copperhead035@reddit
I don’t even want to go back to the town where I grew up
poop-money@reddit
As soon as my grandma and step dad pass away, I won't set foot in that place again. It's a safe town (if you're white), but very socially conservative, religious (Mormons run the place), and has a steaming undercurrent of racism.
plantverdant@reddit
I had a ton of fun in hs. I've never gone to a single reunion.
ReinaShae@reddit
I'm with you there. Will never go back for any reason.
cbih@reddit
As far as I'm concerned, (almost) all my classmates died when we graduated
eJollyRoger@reddit
I would think about it. If the food was free and the location was close by, I'd probably go for an hour at that rate.
Codenamehardhat77@reddit
Same. I am 48 and I have not gone to a single HS reunion. The people I want to stay in contact with from HS, I am still in contact with. No need to go to a reunion to see them.
arcxjo@reddit
I Ubered someone home from my class's 20YR.
That was too close for comfort.
GarminTamzarian@reddit
I wouldn't go for $7500.
Now $75,000 I would strongly consider.
histprofdave@reddit
7500 I'm in. I mean I hated high school but I do need a new water heater....
otherwiseguy@reddit
I got a quote for $3500 and laughed at them and went and bought one for $600 and installed it myself.
Hntrbdnshog@reddit
$7500 for a water heater???
Rust_Bucket37@reddit
Inflation is a bitch! Lol I hope it's not really that much for a water heater...as I cry thinking of my oil fired boiler.
MagnumPIsMoustache@reddit
I’d go to your reunion for $7500
GarminTamzarian@reddit
Throw me a grand to stay home and do nothing and I'll happily let you assume my identity for the evening.
JoisChaoticWhatever@reddit
I'd need 2 more 0's added to that number, plus travel pay, for me to even consider it.
pugincharge@reddit
Gawd, that’s the truth. I talk to those that I want to keep up with and have forgotten the rest.
FatReverend@reddit
FaceRockerMD@reddit
I was about to reply "I wouldn't go for free", but this comment more accurately reflects my thoughts.
jcstrat@reddit
Yeah it’s gonna take a lot more than $75 to entice me to go. Pay to go? That’s hilarious.
JoeLunchpail@reddit
I genuinely thought this was the offer, and my knee jerk response was that I’d need much more
LAffaire-est-Ketchup@reddit
Came to say this. If I knew someone in high school, and I want to still know them, I do. I don’t want to meet the rest again. Ever.
Smoke_and_Coffee@reddit
Agreed! I haven’t been to any of my reunions and there is no amount of money you could pay me to go back to that meth and racist infested shithole of a town. I graduated, left and never looked back. Don’t intend to start now.
Pretty_waves904@reddit
My hourly rate is $150. So 3 hours would be $450. Ill send the invoice to Peaked In High-school LLC.
WhatTheCluck802@reddit
Came here to type this. I can count on one finger the number of high school classmates I’m still in contact with. The rest of them can go pound sand.
empty7878@reddit

$75? Get the hell of my porch with your insults to my mother!
FancyThought7696@reddit (OP)
LOL!
Vegetable-War-117@reddit
This is the right answer
yakswak@reddit
I assume organizer came up with this amount to cover the venue rental costs, food, drinks, etc. And they hopefully have a good estimate for how many may show up to the event. If the #'s are much lower, they might be stuck footing some of the costs. Based on how much it costs to go out to eat these days, this seems like a reasonable amount to ask for to minimally cover the cost.
dmaul17@reddit
Have to pay me a lot more than that to go to one. Lol. I'm a few years past the 25th one and have been to none. I couldn't wait to be out of there and the redneck town I grew up in.
Timmonidus@reddit
What are you getting for the $75? Mine is $200, but it's a 2-day event since I went to an all-male private school. The first day is a golf outing and stag night with the guys, and the 2nd night is with our spouses with dinner and drinks provided.
FancyThought7696@reddit (OP)
I think mine are dinners? Yours sounds like an all-inclusive retreat!
os_beef@reddit
Hell no. You couldn't pay me $75 to go to my high school reunion. I don't know those people. The ones who I care about I'm still in contact with.
Woad_Scrivener@reddit
I went to one because I was in town and my wife tricked me into it. It was held at a remodeled train station and catered by a class mate's BBQ place. Afterwards everyone cruised the local drag like we had decades before and drank in the same parking lot. Not bad, actually.
Vanessaronicatoria@reddit
I crashed my friend's reunion, they had a mechanical bull. It was actually pretty fun.
SlapHappyDude@reddit
If the BBQ was actually good, this sounds great
FancyThought7696@reddit (OP)
That actually sounds like it would be fun. I'm guessing it cost less than $75?
VectorB@reddit
Space rental and dinner costs $.
I enjoyed the last one I went to. We all had a unique shared experience, and I'm too old and a full grown adult to hold some fool I'll will to people around me for a few years, decades ago. Never understood people still acting like they are in high-school when talking about it.
It's nice to see people, go.
Woad_Scrivener@reddit
It was 2019, so I don't recall. Maybe $50? The food was good.

Ok_Percentage5157@reddit
Well, okay. This actually sounds like a good time, lol.
Opposite-Mushroom940@reddit
I went to two of mine, but I don’t think I paid quite that much. But for some reason, I feel like Redditors are the most likely to not have had a good time in high school.
LumpyJump6091@reddit
Yeah, I went to my 20th and it was fun enough. It was at a local bar, included a buffet, and tickets were something like $25. I doubt I'll go to another one unless I just happen to be in town when it's going on, but I'm glad I went to at least one.
Delta1225@reddit
I didn't LOVE high school but that was more of a family/ financial thing. I'm half the country away from my school, I kind of wanted to go to my 25 year but it would have been pretty expensive to go to.
HookersForJebus@reddit
Same here. I’m so far from mine, it seemed silly to travel that far for one day.

I didn't get along with those fucking idiots when I went to high school with them. Why would I pay to go see them again?
ryadare@reddit
I wasn't crazy about most of classmates when I was in high school. I certainly have no reason to go hang out with them now, especially if it sets me back $75.
Turbografx-17@reddit
Like most of the folks here, I haven't been to any of my reunions either. I really don't wanna see all the girls I had unrequited crushes on looking old and haggard and married and beaten down by life (like me). I prefer to keep them beautiful and young and pristine in my mind as wonderful, bittersweet memories. <3
lordskulldragon@reddit
I remember for my 10th back in 2009 I just showed up late and walked right in and didn't have to pay anything. There was also one for my 20th before covid and was a get together at a bar with less than a dozen people. Didn't make that one.
jackfaire@reddit
God no. I went to the 10th one and that's only because I still lived in the area and was mildly curious. No one showed up I actually gave a shit about. I live in the area now but you couldn't pay me to go.
For those about to do the "You need to see the world" I live in a metropolitan area.
Intelligent_Owl_377@reddit
I paid $95 x 2 (spouse is in same class). It was fun. All the "cool" kids went and they were actually nice to me. It was a good redemption for the awkward, nerdy girl.
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
See... this is why I consider it. It would be integrating to see all these people and see if they actually grew up. It would be nice to see that yes, these dumb kids were just that - dumb kids. And if they haven't? Then I could see them for what they are... dumb kids. It could be a little healing. And fwiw, the awkward, nerdy kids were always the best
Puzzleheaded_Race_90@reddit
I think there were 4 people that could stand having me around when I was in high school. One is my brother, 2 are dead, and the other... I've been trying to find for years. I don't think he's ever made an account in anything under his name, because he has completely fallen off the face of the planet. And he 100% wouldn't be there. Josh, if you're out there, I c u pp.
rearwindowpup@reddit
I havent been to any and they were all free...
neonblackiscool@reddit
me either! It was a shit era.
rearwindowpup@reddit
Not just that, social media and the internet sort of made them obsolete. I stayed in touch with all the people I wanted to stay in touch with, there wouldn't be any catching up to do or anything like that.
bagal@reddit
This is the way.
Ippus_21@reddit
I'm barely interested in my next high school reunion as it is. I ended up 3 states and 600-ish miles away as the crow flies. It'd be hundreds of bucks for a flight, plus a rental car, or else a 14-hour drive to get there. I didn't make it to the last ... 3?
I was more or less friends with about three or four people in my graduating class, and I've kept in touch with most of them on FB. I felt maybe 10% of the rest were more or less good people... not good enough that I'm all fired up to see how they're doing after all these years.
I probably wouldn't go if it was free, just because of the travel cost, but after nearly 30 years? I don't know any of those people anymore, and I definitely wouldn't shell out $75 on top of travel costs.
If I still lived in the area and it was a 45-min drive, instead of 14 hours? I'd think about it. Probably not for very long.
That makes me sound curmudgeonly as hell, but honestly, high school isn't a time I remember fondly if you know what I mean. And the couple people I want to check in with probably wouldn't be there anyhow.
CalgaryChris77@reddit
I probably wouldn't, but it's not a crazy price. Have you been to a restaurant lately?
evanweb546@reddit
Social media made high school reunions sort of... pointless. A deflated tradition. The mystery of "what's everyone up to now" was taken away. You can find out, you probably already know. Tangentially keeping track of them between doom scrolling sessions.
Nothing. Nobody is up to anything, maybe someones dead. That's it. Save the trip. $75 is a high price to pay for a guaranteed disappointing night / meal.
fumbler00ski@reddit
I don't care how much it costs. Reunions are pointless and should be a thing of the past.
Santos_L_Halper_II@reddit
I wouldn't go if they gave me $75 to attend. I talk regularly to the two people from high school that I care to talk to. The rest can go fuck themselves.
Necessary_Range_3261@reddit
Our reunion planners suggested a 4 day cruise. I mean, I'm willing to spend a few hours with people I went to high school with, but certainly not 4 days. One planner was very offended, so instead, we just didn't have any reunion at all.
CranberrySauceLines@reddit
I'm in the minority but if it's a good event and decent food/entertainment, I'd pay the money. But I think I had a better high school experience than most. I haven't been able to attend any reunions because I live out of the country.
LooksLikeAWookie@reddit
Most of the people I stay in contact with skipped our 20th and met up at a restaurant.
crazycatlady331@reddit
Hell to the no. You could not pay me $75 to attend.

I made it to my 10 year, missed my 20 year because I now live on the other side of the planet. My 30 year is next year and people are asking me if I'm coming but I still live on the other side of the planet and just the return airfare is $3500 USD so...probably not no.
FancyThought7696@reddit (OP)
I missed my 10 year, my 20 year, and in a couple years, I'll miss my 30 year...
magster823@reddit

SwitchbackHell@reddit
Same! 10 years is too soon and my 20 year was scheduled for May 2020 in the height of COVID. They rescheduled it to 2021 (so it was our 21 year reunion) and I skipped that too. I left my hometown decades ago and haven't been back to visit in years.

Totally Don't go back then. Fuck red state hellscapes.
In last decade... I went back to New Jersey in 2018, 2019, 2024. I miss great pizza & bagels & eggplant Parmesan sandwiches... but it ain't worth going there... dealing with bullshit... & also giving up a trip to Japan or Hawaii.
I'm a fuckin' California man.
Reen842@reddit
Well, disclaimer that I don't think $75 is very much. As long as you get some food for that price. If it's a three course sit down dinner then it's a bargain.

Mail_Order_Lutefisk@reddit
My dad is hitting the age where his classmates are rapidly dying and he was put on some committee to do a reunion last summer.
Anyway, he had to lay his credit card down for the deposit and lo and behold some lady RSVP’d yes and then died like a week before the reunion and the venue still charged my dad for it and now about every third time I talk to him he launches into a tirade about the hotel charging him an extra $75 because Kathy died.
arcxjo@reddit
And that's why you make the RSVP-with-check deadline the day before your payment is due.
Mail_Order_Lutefisk@reddit
It required credit card information but the lady’s credit card was shut down by the time the location attempted the charge.

Class of 2003 here. For my 20th, My HS was charging $100 per head with nothing advertised that could justify that fee. The worst part about it was that it was held on campus at the HS, so they weren't even renting a space with that money.

Unpopular opinion I guess, but I’ve been to all of ours, and even a couple of extra ones for the classes above me, and I’ve always had fun. I was never super popular, and I’m not uber successful or anything, but I moved away from my small town and I’ve lived a pretty good life so far. It’s fun going back and seeing the path others have taken. Maybe it’s because I don’t use social media, so I haven’t maintained pseudo-relationships with everyone I grew up with? Idk. There’s always someone interesting that surprises me.

I went to the five year reunion. It was a giant waste of time. My two friends from school and I hung out and talked the entire time and I noticed that the rest of the little cliques also friend-grouped up and talked all night. lol
elphaba00@reddit
I went to my 20th. It was $50 for my husband and I to attend. I’m not sure what the $50 was for. They held it at a local Eagles lodge, where I assume someone in my class was a member. We got a corner of the bar. When I got there, I was handed a couple of free drink tickets. (Maybe that’s where my money went towards.) There was no food. The entertainment was a karaoke machine. I talked to a few people, one of which blew his vape in my face.
This year is my 30th. I haven’t heard anything yet, but it’s going to be a hard pass
FormidableMistress@reddit
I think my 10 year was over $300 and had events spread across a three day weekend. Like there was a family beach day, a steak dinner, and then the actual reunion party. Whyyyyyyy??? I did not go and when I asked the couple of friends that did go, they said it was very cliquey just like it was in high school. They felt like they wasted money and it was lame.

Aggravating_Finish_6@reddit
Here’s the thing, you either want to go to a reunion or you don’t. If you don’t, no price is ever going to be cheap enough. If you do, I think $75 is actually reasonable for a dinner event if it includes the bar as well. I paid $60 for my 20th reunion 3 years ago and it was pretty fun. It was nice to catch up with people I spent 4 years of my life with but maybe wasn’t close enough to keep in touch with. It was fun telling old stories and reliving memories. I always feel like Reddit skews very anti-reunion.

I got invited to the 10-year reunion in 2009, but nobody I was friends with was going, so I didn't go either. As far as I know, nobody planed a 25-year reunion, or if they did, I wasn't invited. Anyway, I still keep in touch with the people who I was close friends with in high school, so there's no need for me to go to an official reunion to see them.

Fuck no. The people throwing our reunion were both real estate agents, just farming for biz.

I did the main course did wise for mine so people wouldn't have to pay. It just so happened that basically all the people I looked showed up and all the people I didn't like didn't show, which was great.
I think expecting people to pay is ridiculous
eulynn34@reddit
I wouldn't go if they paid me $75
RUk1dd1nGMe@reddit
For my 20th it was 35 a head, but that was 9 years ago. And the townies that set it up did nothing outside of food and drink. It doesn't seem ridiculous if they're doing awards (traveled the furthest, best dressed, etc...) or other activities.
JeffTS@reddit
I went to my 30th last summer and paid $75. I wasn't in the "in" crowd but there were a few people I went hoping to see. While it was nice to see some folks, the music was too loud (I love me a good rock/metal concert) to hold a conversation, lighting wasn't good, no name tags, and my elderly mother with dementia was having an anxiety attack and kept calling me. So, not enjoyable overall. The pre-game at a local bar was fun though.
FeedSquare8691@reddit
Hard pass. This would be my 30th this year and I'll skip it like the last 6 reunions. I have no desire to see anyone that I haven't kept up with, so it's kinda pointless. I didn't peak in high school like most of those other numpties.
lab_sidhe@reddit

Lol, no. I know this is another reunion year for me and I already decided I won't go. Again. I meant it when I said I was done with that part of my life.

In fairness....what exactly does $75 get you?
If it's to cover the cost of a Squid Game-like reunion, might be worth it.
TheRealJefe@reddit
Class of '98 here. Found out about the 10 year 6 months after it happened. 20 year I'm not sure did. Either one at $75 a plate would still have been a no.
parkinglotviews@reddit
This feels like it’s needs details to get accurately answered— my immediate gut response was “Hell no, I didn’t like half as many of them half as much as I pretended” but….
Isn’t in a HCOL or not?
Is it in a small(ish) town where a significant portion left town, but still has family roots; or did most everyone stay local and see each other (that they want) regularly?
Does the school have a history of well-attended reunions?
Is it a proper event— like a prom— (ballroom, band/dj, food, drink)?
Is the proposed venue ‘nice?’ Is there an open bar?
$75 could be an outrageously offensive cash grab for a few stale pizzas and a Bluetooth speaker playing someone’s pandora feed. Or it could be a really nice dinner at a higher end restaurant in a banquet room. Or it could be like a suburban wedding at any nondescript country club… nice but forgettable. And depending on whether you want to see (or be seen by) anyone from that time in your life….
So I guess I’m a solid ‘maybe?’
FancyThought7696@reddit (OP)
Holy crap you put more thought into this than I did lol
parkinglotviews@reddit
I was in student government and on my “class” board… we had to plan our 10yr reunion (while still seniors) as a project…. That said, my class’s 20yr was in 2022. I didn’t go, but it was like a few others have said: “we’re meeting at [local bar] at 7p…” according to Facebook ~12 people went.
L_wanderlust@reddit
No. I haven’t talked to most of them since graduation, so why would I want to now regardless of the cost? I genuinely couldn’t care less what they’re doing or not doing with their lives. The ones I care about I talk to and the others I feel about them like I do about strangers - not my concern
jaya9581@reddit
You couldn’t pay me to go to a high school reunion. The only people I would care to see are ones I’m still in touch with anyway.

Reunions made sense prior to social media but now you can track down anybody you’d like to keep up with. And I’m in contact with those from high school that I want to talk to.
OskeyBug@reddit
I haven't gone to any of mine. I heard the 10 year sucked because everyone was still in their cliques but the 20 year all the barriers broke down and people got wild. 30 feels like it would be depressing as we all show our age and talk about our parents dying and stuff.

My 10th had attendance that was less than 10% of the total size of our class and that included spouses and partners. The group who were popular in high school all sat at a table and didn't move all night, expecting people to come to them. Everyone else kind of mingled around.
It was at a bar the one girl's friend owner, so we had a private room to ourselves. I think it started at 8ish and by 10, we were all gone. Totally not worth it. Though I did end up going out with some other people to a completely different bar!
YEMolly@reddit
Let me chime in as what will appear to be the only non-curmudgeon response: I think for a person who actually wants to go, $75 is reasonable. Everything is so damn expensive these days. That price probably includes paying the people who prepare it, etc. I mean, yes. $75 is still a lot of money. But I don’t think it’s unreasonable in this case.
pickledpeachesforall@reddit
I am considering going to my 30th next year. Never been to any before. It would be good to see everyone else. We are all getting much older and our lives and experiences changed for many. We have also lost quite a few.

My 29th is this year and I haven't attended a single one. I never run into anyone who I went to school with and I like it that way.
I did however have a right colectomy around Christmas and my nurse in the hospital during a day shift was someone who attended high school with me. That was wild. I was a band geek and she was a popular athlete. I was like oh no..I'm embarrassed. We caught up on the last 28 years. That was nice.
Also do your screening colonoscopies! I'm a semicolon now and am thankful for the screening!

Yep. I also had pals in other classes who ask me to come down with them. Usually the event is 2-3 days long. The beach is right there and a bunch of great restaurants.
I don’t love my home town but a couple days with free food and people I actually like. My husband likes it too.
turtle553@reddit
I spent like $60 to go to my 20th even though i didn't keep up with anyone from my class. It was a few hours away, but i could stay at my dad's house and usually went to visit every few months. At least they're offering food. My wife's last reunion requested an organizing fee of $20 or $30 and the plan was to meet at a bar & grill and order your own food & drinks.
We did not attend. But I'm scratching my head wondering what the fee would have been used for.
PuppyJakeKhakiCollar@reddit
An organizing fee? For driving yourself to the restaurant, sitting at the table, and paying for your own food?
ThizGuyFawkes@reddit
Yes. Made no sense. People were commenting on the FB event page asking if there would be awards given out or decorations or anything at all to justify the fee. The organizer was coy and evasive. It was truly bizarre.

No. I went to my 10 and 20 year reunions. With the age of tech I wonder if there will even be a need for a 30 year. Plus HS was shit anyway, why relive it again for any amount of money.
Ryokurin@reddit
I mean, did you enjoy it? Did you keep up with anyone? If you are going to show off what you've accomplished then it won't really change anything in the end. I kind of did that with the 10th and realized that I barely recognized anyone, and I didn't really care how 90% of them turned out.
drewbaccaAWD@reddit
I voted no, but if they were creative enough with the reunion to where I thought it might actually be entertaining? Sure. But not for the standard reunion. To cover a decent stand up comedian and drinks or something that's actually fun and not just talking to people I don't want to talk to? lol sure.
Relevant_Wrangler830@reddit
I went to my 30 year and that was the first time I had seen those people since 91 when I left that school. I paid 250 because it was a open bar. It was worth it in my opinion. ToothZealousideal297@reddit
Put it this way: my class ring doesn’t even say anything about the school, that was intentional from 17 y/o me, and I still think it was a waste of money, and yet it’s the only sensible thing about that ring if I was going to waste that money either way.
AdelleDeWitt@reddit
I wouldn't go if it was free. I live across the street from my old high school so it's not like it's a distant thing but I'm not sure why I would want spend time with people that I didn't even like 25 years ago when we at least had school in common.
notsosecretshipper@reddit
I didn't go to any of my hs reunions because it was $25 each, and I didn't talk to most of those people then anyway.
I did go to a dinner that was kind of an elementary school reunion and had a fantastic time. My elementary school was k-8 and there were like 40 kids in my whole grade and most families were there the whole time, so we knew each other well even if we weren't really friends. I'd definitely go to another one of those if someone put it together.

I wouldn't go if it was free. I didn't have a terrible high school experience, it was probably average, with highs and lows. Just have zero interest in it. Besides, if I did get curious enough I can look them up on social media at home. Have never actually done this, but the option is there lol.

I’ve had to organize these class reunions before and yeah good luck getting anyone to pay $75 a plate. Social media changed this game completely.
That being said, I could see why it would cost that much. Try renting a venue that holds at least 100 people, catering for said group, some sort of entertainment for the night. It adds up quickly. Your best bet is to try and rent out a bar which takes care of the food/entertainment part of the budget.

Maybe if I was in town and my friends were going. My parents live in the house I spent my teen years in so. I stay there when I visit. There’s a few people I wouldn’t want to see and one I know for sure would be there helping run the show. She’s a former “friend” ya know. The one that was a friend of someone else that really nobody else liked but we all had to put up with? One day I finally snapped on her on fb lmao! She tried to “out parent” me and tell me what all she knew as if she knew best. Anyway. Her oldest is barely older than my youngest blah blah. She caught me on a bad day aka she got the right one that day and learned 🤣🤣 ahh fb drama.
I digress. I also don’t like to stay awake much past 9pm haha when did we all get so damn old?? Alcohol doesn’t interest me much, I’d much rather talk to my cats, I’ve been married for 24 years, two adult kids and I’m so thankful my youngest is finishing 8th grade next month and I’ll never again have to deal with the nightmare of middle school ever again!! Why should I care about people I can check in with on fb, let alone pay $75 if I wanted to?

I spent $90, BUT it was my 20 year, I had moved back to the area, and some friends I reconnected with were going.

No. Especially high school. In all honesty, I had a great time in high school. Wasn't the most popular kid, but certainly wasn't bullied or anything. Was mostly in all the smart college type classes. Didn't go to prom or graduation either. But, I have maintained friendships with a lot of kids from then.
But, elementary school, yeah, I'd likely do something with those kids. I went to a Catholic school until 8th grade. We all still talk, and go out out for drinks a lot now as adults. But because everyone else has spouses and kids it's hard to get *everybody* together at one time. They have talked about doing a weekend getaway down the shore. Might do this. Spouses and kids can do the boardwalk, beaches, etc while the rest of us get dinners, drinks.
briandemodulated@reddit

My class was tiny (63 people) so take this with a grain of salt. I literally talk to one person from HS regularly (my bff since like 6th grade), maybe 3 or 4 people I talk to yearly (they aren’t even all from my class now that I think about it), and then like if I happen to go somewhere close to home I’ll run into people and talk to them, but that’s every 5-10 years 😂
I don’t hold any ill will and I would enjoy chatting with people if I bumped into them at a bar, but no I have no desire to go hang out with high school people.
Iamheno@reddit
This was the cost of our 10 year. I didn't go. Our 20 year was $50/person with 2 drinks included. I didn't go, Apparently both were so poorly attended they're saying we may not do 30 year reunion this year. I probably won't go.

Dextropic@reddit
My 20th reunion was just "if you graduated in 93, swing by this bar on this day"
Clear_Tangerine5110@reddit
So what I'm learning from the comments is that those who are interested in going are weighing whether or not the price is reasonable. And for what it is, it's pretty okay I guess. Then there are those who apparently didn't like the people around them in their teen years enough to care to go at all, whether there was a cost or not.
I associate with the latter.
I grew up with a lot of the people I graduated with. The ones I wanted to keep up with over the years, I have. The ones I haven't are of no interest to me so why would I care to catch up at a reunion? So we could show our lives off to each other? "Here's what I've been up to for the last 25 years!" Good for you, but I don't give a shit!

I didn’t dislike HS, and I probably would have gone to a 20 year reunion, especially since I’m only an hour away. But 6 more years beyond 20 made a difference, and I care even less.
I barely even remember anyone now—mostly random faces I can’t put a name to anymore. And honestly, the people I met in college were far more significant to my life than HS friends. I’m still in touch with exactly two people from HS and that’s enough.

When I helped plan my 10 year, we charged $20 to cover catering from a local bbq place, and held the reunion at our school to reduce costs. I'd say that $75 is too steep, even with inflation, unless the planners are doing something insane like a seated dinner with plated meals.

Bobcatluv@reddit
Your post could really use more context, as the high school and reunion experience can vary drastically from person to person/school to school. For example, my graduating class was 85 people, so our celebration would look much different compared to a class of 300. Also, what does $75 include and is that an appropriate amount for the hosting venue? I heard that my 10 year reunion was $20 per person, but only 30 people rsvp’d and it was held in the event room of a local bar. A catered dinner plus bar service at an event venue in your town could cost $75.
I didn’t attend my 10 year because it was over Thanksgiving weekend, which was an inconvenient time for me to travel as I lived out of state. My 20 year was supposed to be in 2020 and never happened 🙃
Clear_Tangerine5110@reddit

I just planned our 25 year reunion last summer and thats what we paid and it was great food. Everyone who came loved it and we even got to take home leftovers so score. One thing I'll day because I help llan things for other groups, $75 for a plated dinner is pretty standard pricing. That price probably also includes wait staff and room rentals.
Clear_Tangerine5110@reddit
Whether or not something is "standard pricing" has no bearing on whether or not I'm interested in doing it.

Class of ‘99 (elder millennial) here. I think I paid $30 per person for 2 drink tickets, heavy hors d'oeuvres and bottomless non-alcoholic drinks in a private room at a local restaurant for my 20th high school reunion.
I had a mostly positive experience in high school. I’m glad I went because I got to reconnect with people who aren’t on socials.

The class president or whoever has to book a venue. They’re probably looking at losing money, and a lot of stress and time trying to put together something that will inevitably get canceled due to lack of tickets sold.
So if you want to go, I think $75 is kinda steep, but a realistic ask from the organizers.
squanchmysquanchhole@reddit
I skipped both my 10 AND 20 year and everything would have been covered had I gone, but yeah, no way you could pay me to see like 99% of those jerks again. Small town, super backwards high school was nightmare fuel and most of those losers never even left. I kept in touch with anyone I even remotely gave a f**k about, which was all of 3 people.
thisbroadreadsbooks@reddit
I’m glad that I graduated in 2000, and we had MySpace, then Facebook. Anyone I wanted to keep in touch with, I have.
Winnipesaukee@reddit
I found out at my tenth that the money I had helped raise to alleviate this was raided by the school district at some point. It was one of the reasons why I’ll have nothing to do with them after that.
CunnyMaggots@reddit
My ten year was like $200 to attend. I haven't attended any of them lol
FancyThought7696@reddit (OP)
My conspiracy theory is that the rich snob club in high school wants to keep it a rich snob club in perpetuity.
TinyRandomLady@reddit
Or it’s their business that’s catering
CunnyMaggots@reddit
They're the only ones that attended too
Vegetable-War-117@reddit
What the hell? Private school? Or small class size and at a fancy restaurant?
FancyThought7696@reddit (OP)
Here is some irony:
I attended public school. Reunion prices range from $75 to $80 per plate.
My wife attended expensive Catholic high school. Her reunions are free. (She doesn't attend them either)
I can't make it make sense.
CunnyMaggots@reddit
If I remember right they rented out a "ballroom" at style building here locally. Ahmed we had several hundred people in our class so...
Novus20@reddit
Nope, to do what? Ask people what they’re up to? I don’t care and if I did I would have asked….
Greerio@reddit
No shit. If I cared I would have stayed in touch or added you on social media.
azul360@reddit
Mine had one 5 years after school ended (yeah I wondered wtf to myself as well) and then legit never heard about another ever again haha. Probably because 95% of them left Florida instantly like I should have XD
pekannboertler@reddit
You would have to pay me more than that to show up
WarhammerRyan@reddit
Ha! No.
Greerio@reddit
I wouldn’t spend $2 to catch the bus to go to my reunion if a surf and turf dinner was included.
NazcaKhan@reddit
timsea99@reddit
I heard my HS did a 25 year last year, and 18 people attended (our class was over 200). Safe to say this a dead tradition.
fuelvolts@reddit
Hell. No. I'm done with those people. There is a core group of old HS friends that I see every few years. That's good enough.
feartheswans@reddit
If I had fond memories of High School, then maybe I would. However, that is not the case
GlueGuns--Cool@reddit
Going to high school reunions is pathetic and sad sorry
Ok_Percentage5157@reddit
Lol, nah. Look, the folks from back in those days that I want to talk to? I still talk to them. Other people? I'm good.
I don't mind occasionally running into folks from back in the day, but I'm not going to a whole banquet hall full of them.
Sunshine-Nikki@reddit
I went to like 7 different high schools so that would be a lot of money to see people I don’t even remember and I doubt any of them remember me.
LaFantasmita@reddit
Would prefer they just bring a stack of pizza and chardonnay to the gym.
Chemical_Tomato_6308@reddit
My 30 year was $100 a pop, didn't want to go in the first place...
bh0@reddit
I've only gone to my 20 so far, mainly to see a handful of friends I hadn't seen in person and go drinking with them and catch up. But we have a unique situation where we were international students living abroad so the reunions are always in random US cities that people may want to visit and make little vacations out of outside of the reunion event(s). The school itself doesn't even host them. It was also a much smaller and closer group of students than your typical US high school class of hundreds and hundreds of people. Everyone knew each other and generally got a along just fine so we have less of the "I never want to see those people ever again" mentality.
I had to pay for dinner because it was at a restaurant, but I don't remember it being some crazy amount. Cheaper than the other costs of getting there.
stafford_fan@reddit
No
ButterscotchAware402@reddit
I have never even considered going to a high school reunion and I never will. Not even if I were paid $75.
Accadius@reddit
Nope. I didnt even attend my 10 or 20 year. 30 year not looking good either.
brokenman82@reddit
lol fuck no
UnicornOnTheJayneCob@reddit
I mean, if I were going to go, I wouldn’t mind paying $75 for it (I am in an HCoL area). That said, I would never go.
Aggravating-Alarm-16@reddit
Social media killed the need for those.
jungle4john@reddit
I am going to pay it this fall to go to my 30th. I was shipped off to a boarding because my parents did not want to deal with my ass as a teenager. Thank gawd they chose an academic school and not disciplinary school. It was a tiny school and I'm more friends with people from high school than I am college.
JackSpadesSI@reddit
I haven’t heard a peep about my HS reunion so I’m guessing there just isn’t going to be one. I can’t explain why, but I’m actually a little bummed about it.
smooshie-mooshie@reddit
I keep anyone in the 'reunion planner group' blocked.
I'm not going...
redditeatsitsownass2@reddit
ha no. I did go to one to show them what reading a fucking book and not being a tool can do for you.
clockwallbox@reddit
It depends how much you want to go. I would pay that if it meant meeting up with some people I actually wanted to see again
cloudydays2021@reddit
My HS has never organized one; I’m still in touch, via social media, with some of the people I went to HS with. I went to a very liberal high school in the middle of NYC and it was honestly a pretty cool experience, and the vast majority of my former classmates are out there doing great stuff, living interesting lives and hold similar political views as I do.
Sk if they held a reunion and it was $75 a head, I would consider going. That’s not much money for a night out, especially here in NYC.
So
bshr49@reddit
golfdk@reddit
No. I haven't gone to any of mine. High school wasn't a bad experience by any stretch, but I'm not very social and I haven't kept up with anybody from back then. Again, nothing bad, just no interest.
ArenSteele@reddit
Mine was $750 (included multiple meals and sleeping in our old dorm rooms)
I said He’ll no to that price
I would have paid $75 in a heartbeat and got my own hotel room or something
mindsunwound@reddit
Fuck those assholes, and fuck that school.
Bland_Boring_Jessica@reddit
You would have to pay me 75 dollars to go. I take that back you would have to pay me double that.
Fellwuckly@reddit
Mine was $45, and only a quarter of our class attended
Papfan1@reddit
I never went to one reunion. I have no interest in keeping in touch with people who I barely spoke to when I was in school. Nor am I one for inauthentic small talk. I could care less.
NPC261939@reddit
No. I didn't like any of you then, and nothing has changed.
ChristyLovesGuitars@reddit
I can’t imagine going to a HS reunion, let alone paying money to do so.
jahmill@reddit
$75, that's it?! My 30th reunion is coming up this summer and they're charging $250 pp (and an additional $150 for your spouse/ partner/+1) but it is including a reception hour on Friday, brunch and day party on Saturday, and cookout / BBQ on Sunday. Plus we have a group rate for hotel rooms for those of us coming in from our of town. I attended an average working class high school in the south, but my school once upon a time was the only black high school in the county. The school actually hosts a all class reunion every year on the same weekend but the benchmark years (years that end in 5 or 0) do extra.
fakesaucisse@reddit
I remember when my high school 5 year reunion was coming up and the classmate who arranged it said it was $50 per person. She effectively made it into a wedding reception with renting a hotel ballroom, dance floor, DJ, photographer, and buffet. Nobody wanted that for a 5 year reunion, and most of us couldn't afford it at that point anyways.
So no, I absolutely would not pay $75 for a 20-something year reunion. Just get together at a bar and call it a day, classmates.
AppropriateDream2903@reddit
I did exactly this because all my friends said they were attending. I bought the tickets and none of my friends went. I spent the evening feeling like it was lunch time at school and my friends were home sick. It was so lame
Wise-Living-850@reddit
I still hate all those people
GothLillith@reddit
My friends and I went to our tenyear, stayed for less than 15 minutes, then went and got dinner elsewhere. A twenty year wasn't even organized.
No way in hell would I pay $75 to go to one.
effitalll@reddit
You’d have to pay me a lot more than $75 to go to a high school reunion.
queenofcaffeine76@reddit
Lmao for my husband's 20th, they wanted like $100 and the activities were the beach, the park, and softball. All free. All outside. In August. In Florida.
FancyThought7696@reddit (OP)
Just don't pay it and show up anyways lol. Are they going to hire goons to toss you out?
No-Assignment6685@reddit
I mean, is it open bar? Cause I would have to drink 3x that just to make it tolerable, but I ain't spending $300 on a reunion.
AYearInOaxaca@reddit
My willingness to attend a class reunion would directly correlate with:
1) How much weight have I lost since high school?
2) How much weight has everyone else gained since high school?
3) Have I had some sort of major success recently
3a) If I have, am I willing to play the odds that my degree of success meets and/or exceeds the success had by people I haven't liked enough to keep in touch with for the past 23 years?
4) Have I had a major head injury recently from which I have not recovered? (I would need to have had a major head injury to consider attending.)
DenvahGothMom@reddit

We took a donation for the organizer because she did it herself for us.
FancyThought7696@reddit (OP)
IMHO, that is much, much preferable than forking over tons of money for overpriced food.
Funkopedia@reddit
I don't even remember any of these people lol, but that's just me personally. I think if one were to go at all, $75 is not unreasonable to contribute to the cost of hosting.
thunderlips36@reddit
Why would I even want to go talk to people that used to make fun of me but now would need to apologize to me for it as they've grown as a person?
I mean, probably not. I wouldn't need to reconnect with anyone I hadn't already
Left_Maize816@reddit
I only went to my 10th reunion. All my friends and their SOs went and I thought I might be able to connect with someone from my HS days. Tickets were $92 like 20 years ago. It sucked. It was literally wasted time and money as the only people I wound up wanting to talk to were the same people I still saw regularly. Food was bad, pay bar. Never went again.
FancyThought7696@reddit (OP)
I really don't get the fancy schmancy hyper-expensive plates for such an event. Picnic at the park would be most I would ever consider doing.
PetuniaPicklePepper@reddit
Ah, what are the perks? Dinner? Dancing? Bar?
modsguzzlehivekum@reddit
Not only would I pay but I’d pay for a select few others that can’t afford it because they turned out to be failures. It’s funny when the ones that wouldn’t give you the time of day end up in your dms
babe_ruthless3@reddit
No thanks. The majority of the friends I had in high school, I still see several times a year. Playing golf, kids birthday parties, random BBQ. We have had a group text going for 10 years now. Everyone else, I dont care.
FearMeIAmRoot@reddit
The people I want to talk to, I already talk to. I'm not paying $75 for shitty food, and to go dick measure against a bunch of people I didn't care about 20 years ago.
Northern_Lights_2@reddit
I wouldn’t go for anything less than a million dollars.
TeekTheReddit@reddit
I suppose it's kind of a moot point as my class would never organize anything more elaborate than maybe reserving a table at the local bar/restaurant.
I suppose if it were an event large enough to warrant a large venue and catering and music and all that then chipping in for expenses wouldn't be out of line. But I find it hard to believe an event with that many people would need $75 per person.
esocharis@reddit
Considering it would also require me to drive 1100 miles to get there, no lol
Like, I'll still try and go to my 30th next year, but mostly to see a small handful of people I wouldn't need to be at the actual reunion to see. An extra charge just to be in the presence of people that didn't give a crap about me then and even less of a crap about me now would be a hard pass.
OllieFromCairo@reddit
I didn't like those assholes in high school. Why would I pay to see them again?
chari_de_kita@reddit
Haven't been back since I left and don't plan to anytime soon. Was put on a mailing list by a former classmate that I never spoke to back then and promptly unsubscribed shortly after. No plans to send my kids there either so I'm not really concerned about who the new headmaster is or whatever else is going on in the "community."
AdPutrid5162@reddit
30 year anniversary for me. Geez, just typing that feels weird
CokBlockinWinger@reddit
I went to three different high schools. The first and last one I attended I made a handful of lifelong friends.
That being said, I owned a large warehouse I converted into band and art studios, and we wound up getting everyone in our group, (a large group as I bridged friends from both high schools over the years) together there. We made it a potluck, had one of my friends DJ, and just hung out. It was awesome! Everyone considered that our reunion.
paintedwoodpile@reddit
Who is going to be there? Anyone I care about seeing? The trip would be 4 hours each way with probably and overnight stay at a similarly priced hotel in the area. I've wasted my time and money on worse things.
Moxie_Stardust@reddit
What am I getting for this $75?
literanch@reddit
I have zero interest in HS reunions, now or in the past. I can count the number of people I went to high school with that I care if I ever see again on one hand.
Philly_3D@reddit
I went to my 10 year and it was really fun! There were over 200 of us that attended! We had a serious party!! We were 28 years old...
When 20 came around, I just wasn't interested. Idk, I just feel like I'm still in touch with the people I really care to be in touch with and that life was just so long ago at this point that I don't feel like it's relevant anymore.
I didn't go and heard later than there were roughly 20 people there out of over 350 we graduated with. I think most of us have just moved on to a different time in our lives.

They're offering you $75? I didn't even get an invite
