Station wagons didn't sell 20 years ago and car makers have maddeningly decided to never reassess that despite the huge CUV popularity boom. There's been a shift in consumer preferences but without the option of a wagon under $100,000 the auto makers don't see it.
The US hasn't gotten a manual, rwd 3 series with the big engine since the E46. You could get the auto, AWD with the small engine all day but most enthusiasts aren't going for those, and none enthusiasts will just go for a CUV anyway.
