lookimg for recommendations for quiet coastal towns in the south of England.
I'm not hearing good things about Hastings or Eastbourne.
have all Coastal towns become rowdy ??
when_music_hits@reddit
Eastbourne is a hectic mess of elderly in summer. Avoid. Hastings is similar but more younger people. Lewes and newhaven is better
petrujenac@reddit
Why did nobody mention Weymouth?
Infundibulus@reddit
Dungeness.
MINKIN2@reddit
Can't go wrong with any in Dorset or Cornwall.
stevedavies12@reddit
Dorset? There's just been a 48 hour rave in the county and a murder outside a bar in Bournemouth
Successful_Repair393@reddit
Bournemouth is one part of Dorset but the rest is gorgeous safe and tranquil. Swanage and all the coastline towards lulworth is some of the most beautiful coastline in the world in my opinion.
elementarydrw@reddit
I'd love to hear about a 48 hour rave in Lulworth... where would it be held? That one tiny cafe next to the beach? The museum? Halfway up the walk between the cove and Durdle Door?
Pencil_Queen@reddit

Apparently on one of the MoD firing ranges

Nice try, someone who clearly lives in Devon..
GnaphaliumUliginosum@reddit
North Devon too and much of S Devon outside of Torbay and Plymouth
mingwraig@reddit
What's wrong with Torbay?
king_ofbhutan@reddit
i find brixham to be a lovely place, unfairly lumped in with the rest of torbay.
further up youve got budleigh and sidmouth, both of which are fairly nice as well
redandbluebadness@reddit
Go west Sir
WinkyNurdo@reddit
I used to live on the Dorset coast. Try Swanage, or keep going further west along the coast. It’s a beautiful part of the world.
Fanoflif21@reddit
Christchurch...
Shhhh tell no one
I_ALWAYS_UPVOTE_CATS@reddit
Lymington, Dorset or Woodbridge, Suffolk. The latter is on an estuary rather than the coast itself.
prustage@reddit
Last time I was in Worthing it was pretty quiet,
Petrichor_ness@reddit
My in-laws are Worthing based and I'd call it anything but quiet!
The poor town hasn't got a chance, it's got the sea on one side, the South Downs above and towns on either side so it's like a plant trying to grow in a pot too small for it. Add three train crossings and cars parked all along most residential streets, it's a nightmare to drive in.
According to Google, it's got a population of over 100k which is more than twice my nearest city!
Amazing-Jury-6886@reddit (OP)
St Ives does look like a good bet.
truckosaurus_UK@reddit
The problem with coastal towns of any size (having grown up in one) is that there is an odd combination of high property prices and lack of decent jobs. Also a fair bit of minor anti-social behaviour due to lots of pubs and tourists, and as mentioned, people down of their luck heading to the end of the train line, or picking somewhere scenic and warm to rough sleep.
If you want somewhere properly tranquil and quite you need places that are more villages (and full of second homes).
My vote for somewhere suitable is St Ives.
sgst@reddit
Lymington and Swanage are pretty nice.
Amazing-Jury-6886@reddit (OP)
Had a terrible experience on a school trip to swanage , haven't been back since.
Independent-Ad-3385@reddit
Did your mate punch a fish?
Amazing-Jury-6886@reddit (OP)
I'm not sure if that is a euphemism, but no. My school had a high ratio of non white kids. The locals did like them being in swanage. We got in a huge fight on the sea front, which was broken up by one guy who was fishing there. Thanks to him, nobody got stabbed.
Independent-Ad-3385@reddit
That sounds pretty horrible.
I was referencing the Inbetweeners (sorry)
Amazing-Jury-6886@reddit (OP)
Not sure why I don't get the reference , I loved that programme. Will have to watch them again.
cupidstunt01@reddit
Swanage is indeed a lovely seaside town!
Big_Pool4238@reddit
Look at Hythe, Rye, Winchelsea, Lewes, Sandwich, Whitstable, Selsey - all lovely places
Independent-Ad-3385@reddit
Hythe is quiet in the sense of, there's not much to do except visit Waitrose.
FreyaAndMe@reddit
You’re so right lol, I was there for 2 months. But honestly I liked the peacefulness, and Southampton is easy enough to get to from there.
ThePodd222@reddit
Lewes is lovely but it's not coastal. Selsey is a bit isolated and not much going on by way of jobs.
jasilucy@reddit
Lyndhurst, new Milton, Christchurch.. the new forest area.
Independent-Ad-3385@reddit
Lyndhurst isn't coastal, did you mean Lymington?
jasilucy@reddit
Sorry I meant that sort of area. Barton on sea is beautiful
MorugaMike@reddit
Hayling island
Amazing-Jury-6886@reddit (OP)
30 years ago it was very quiet there. Not anymore
Melonpan78@reddit
Southsea, but not Portsmouth.
Slyspy006@reddit
Got to go through one to get to the other!
Melonpan78@reddit
The key is not to stop until you see the sea. 😉
SnooDonuts6494@reddit
The South Coast is about 300-odd miles; there's a huge difference between Margate and Cornwall. Which bit are you more interested in? I think the quietest are more towards the West, in general. Like Mousehole or something.
when_music_hits@reddit
Eastbourne is quieter than Hastings...until the buses turn up in summer for people of an age....I like both areas to be honest, lives in south harbour Eastbourne for a bit and still visit friends over by the feringerola (wrong name?) In Hastings every few months
Amazing-Jury-6886@reddit (OP)
Explains what I've heard from several people about seaside towns in uk. So need to stick to those in the middle of a rail route. Good call
barrybreslau@reddit
Eastbourne is much nicer than Hastings, but it's a big town not a quaint fishing village. I liked it. The countryside in East Sussex is lovely.
when_music_hits@reddit
South downs are almost worth the rage of people driving exceptionally slowly. But! Peace heaven(newhaven?) By cinque ports...has a special trick up its sleeve, and it's called susmans
when_music_hits@reddit
That's just my own experience, of that side of England, lived in Southend, and Margate too amongst many other places and noticed a similar dynamic. Though Yarmouth and further on seemed much less scummy
hanningsbee@reddit
As a South East Londoner at the time I was genuinely alarmed at the amount of anti-social behaviour in Margate and surprised at the biggest demographic of people engaging in it (literally people my parents’ age).
when_music_hits@reddit
Yes! Some if those seaside towns were quite eye opening(stayed well away for the last 15 or so). Deptford myself for a fair few years.
Rowmyownboat@reddit
Eastbourne is not rowdy. If you want really quiet, try Seaford on the other side of the Seven Sisters.
DoIKnowYouHuman@reddit
And railway or ww2 nerds love the area, only station on the network with inbuilt pillbox is a stop before
Stained_concrete@reddit
Seaford is quiet to a fault - there's f-all going on there if that's what you're after. What it does have is the amazing walking trail over the Seven Sisters cliffs including beachy head. If you make it all the way to Eastbourne you'll deserve a pint.
Spiritual_Edge_1831@reddit
A lot of drugs, from experience.
Stained_concrete@reddit
Blimey, all I've seen there are old biddies (which doesn't rule out drugs, I suppose.)
EmberizaHortulana@reddit
This, also very accessible via branch line from Lewes.
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
Anywhere south Devon. Dartmouth, perhaps?
Particular-Bid-1640@reddit
I used to live in Falmouth, Cornwall and I miss it greatly
anabsentfriend@reddit
Seaford? Midway between Brighton and Eastbourne, with Lewes just up the road. Decent transport links and railway station.
Superb-Act-3201@reddit
I like Mersea Island and Sheringham. Prefer the south west but I've always enjoyed my visits there.
OutrageousAnything72@reddit
I really enjoyed Rye and broadstairs
Gary_Garibaldi@reddit
St Leonards
Amazing-Jury-6886@reddit (OP)
I'm hearing it's got issues with youngsters on mopeds these days.
OutrageousAnything72@reddit
You’re going to hear bad things about every town if that’s what you look for
HotNeon@reddit
Worthing is nice
364LS@reddit
The Isle of Wight
Amazing-Jury-6886@reddit (OP)
You know what, not been there since primary school trip. Might just have to go check it out. Thanks
-thisname-@reddit
Cornwall is great this time of year before the tourist season really kicks off in summer.
Business_Advance_569@reddit
Sidmouth in East Devon is lovely. And quiet!
AlanBennettIsAGod@reddit
Bexhill.
Angelf1shing@reddit
Shaldon
Jeopardise91@reddit
Rustington, Goring in West Sussex
Antique_Caramel_5525@reddit
Hythe near Folkestone. Lovely little town.
Realistic_Beyond_903@reddit
Selsey
Haunting_Being@reddit
Go for the South West rather than South East; nice beaches, clean water, plenty of nice towns.
