Tuesday randomness trying to download a driver and saw Windows 12 on FF's driver list
dirtrunner21@reddit
I was there when MS said Windows 10 was supposed to be the last version of Windows
NoPossibility4178@reddit
Gotta love how Microslop bots all come out of the woodwork to defend how "Microsoft never said that" when someone mentions that.
kirashi3@reddit
Because Microsoft didn't? If I recall correctly, it was a single engineer in a blog post. I do not recall there ever being an official announcement from Microsoft PR teams though.
Now, if you can find a source that says otherwise, I will happily eat my hat over this. Feel free to link it in a comment reply when you find it. 🙂
NoPossibility4178@reddit
Microsoft let that guy speak and give interviews to major publications and let word spread around without denying it because it was good PR, until eventually that didn't really fit the narrative anymore and it's "it was some random guy that said it". You can't have your cake and eat it too.
kirashi3@reddit
Isn't this what our mass media news outlets do? And heck, the government does this all the time. Ultimately, it is and always will be up to you, the individual human being, to verify the authenticity of everything you read or hear. Whether or not you wish to spend time doing this is entirely up to you. 🤷
Cyhawk@reddit
Nope, a Microsoft employee did say it.
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/shows/ignite-2015/brk2352
Around 15 min mark, it was also repeated by other Microsoft employees around the same time and for a few years it was Microsoft's mantra.
nexustrimean@reddit
Windows 11's Version numbers are all still 10.xxxxxxxx So they aren't wrong yet.
5panks@reddit
Me trying to explain why going from 10 to 11 isn't as big of a deal as going from 7 to 10 because 10 and 11 are the same kernel.
TheSmJ@reddit
But you can't put the taskbar on the left, right or top of the screen so it's the end of the fucking world.
The_Wkwied@reddit
You also can't pin folders on the taskbar anymore, too... Functionality that's been there since 95.. ffs.
hurkwurk@reddit
"ExplorerPatcher" its one of the many taskbar replacements. and it works extremely well. I personally missed being able to have a side bar instead of bottom, and they have a windows 10 (explorerpatcher) emulation mode that should let you do everything you want as far as pinning. That said, i think you need to pin the shortcuts to folders, not the open folder, since thats just a explorer shortcut.
rayoje@reddit
You actually can but it's unnecessarily complicated (tested last week): https://www.groovypost.com/howto/pin-files-folders-or-drives-to-windows-11-taskbar/
NoPossibility4178@reddit
TheSmJ@reddit
It's a feature that's totally worth throwing a little hissy fit over because now you can't do your job! Luckily for you, there's a couple other grown adults here who you can cry with and I'm sure I got another binky for you to suckle somewhere.
MajStealth@reddit
i got an insider notification this weekend, that *drumwhirl* taskbar on left, right and top are coming BACK!
General_NakedButt@reddit
You had users get pissed about this too lol?
ARandomGuy_OnTheWeb@reddit
Nevermind the users, I'm still annoyed at that too
verkohlt@reddit
They mentioned in a blog post a few weeks ago that it's going to be enabled again:
thelunk@reddit
The problem is why would they think that removing functionality is a good idea? do you want to gate it behind an advanced panel or something? okay fine. read but don't remove usefulness
simask234@reddit
Remember when the RTM release was missing the ability to have taskbar labels, and they only brought it back after 2 years?
jordansrowles@reddit
They didn't remove any functionality. They rebuilt it in WinUI3, and just didn't port that functionality over.
throwawayPzaFm@reddit
And they still can't get taskbar thumbnails to show consistently...
jordansrowles@reddit
🙌 you'll get no love for modern Windows from me... or for WinUI3 at all
5redie8@reddit
C suites hadn't gotten humbled enough yet
junkhacker@reddit
Give people things that are big and obvious to complain about and they will put all their energy into complaining about it. Then you easily fix it, and you don't hear them complain anymore, even about the much more serious problems.
ZipTheZipper@reddit
They're supposedly bringing that back soon.
dathar@reddit
Y'all pissed at that but I'm more pissed that we lost the ability to throw folders on our taskbars. The fun sub-Start menu folders where you can load up your portable apps and shortcuts and put it next to the system clock. Used to have one for different tools and files. LDAP/AD, certain scripts and shortcuts, memes...
nroach44@reddit
I remember early versions of W10 had a version number of 6.4.
I've even turned on machines that I thought had 8/8.1 on them, but nope it was early 10.
Iteration is a killer
simask234@reddit
Those must have been prereleases/betas.
But yeah. 6.0 was Vista, 6.1 was 7, 6.2 was 8, 6.3 was 8.1
AmiDeplorabilis@reddit
That's just... wrong.
renegadecanuck@reddit
The newest versions of Microsoft Office are still technically version 16.x.
BlackV@reddit
so its windows 12 ;)
MyUshanka@reddit
Just pulling a Mac and stalling on 10 for... 15 years. By my math, they've got about 4-5 left?
theEvilQuesadilla@reddit
r/AngryUpvote
Stickus@reddit
A single engineer said it and was talking about Windows 10/kernel. Windows still on kernel v10.x and that ain't changing yet
pdp10@reddit
Microsoft never contradicted the printed statements of someone who was authorized to talk to media -- until it was time to sell some new hardware with new OEM licenses.
TheJesusGuy@reddit
No, you weren't.
Tireseas@reddit
You mean when one Windows exec said they didn't have another one in the pipeline. People heard "last" and forgot it has more than one meaning.
MajStealth@reddit
he hear and understand what we want to hear -
ArmyCommander6948@reddit
they never said that though...
Cyhawk@reddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/windows/comments/1cbnqjg/what_happened_to_that_story_of_windows_10_will_be/l10qb5a/
Heres a link to the source. They did. You are incorrect.
dustojnikhummer@reddit
Wasn't that said by one random Windows dev on Twitter?
MartianMH_@reddit
If i recall correctly the person saying this meant Windows 10 is the latest they are working on when saying its the last Windows Version. As in the last released version
funkwizard4000@reddit
They never actually said that.
Capta-nomen-usoris@reddit
Show me where they never said that.
Entegy@reddit
It was an enthusiastic developer at a conference. The tech press ran wild with it.
Microsoft publishes their product lifecycle. It was very expected that Windows 10 would have a 10 year lifecycle.
ArborlyWhale@reddit
Not correcting something so wide spread, literally said by one of your employees, is implicitly agreeing with it lol. So yes, they did say something with their silence.
SeanFrank@reddit
It wasn't one of their employees. It was a random developer who makes software for windows.
MSFT never said that.
NoPossibility4178@reddit
Jerry Nixon worked at Microsoft.
syslurk@reddit
It was all over the marketing at the time when they were offering free upgrades from Windows 7. Windows 10 was sold as the last Windows you ever need.
braytag@reddit
Yeah they did. Even the downloads went to "windows server" instead of the usual "windows server 20xx"
PatHeist@reddit
They absolutely did, watched everyone make a big fuss about it, didn't make any attempt at correction, didn't refute it when reached out to for comments by journalists, then years later they decided it wasn't true and tried to gaslight everyone about it.
If it was false all along they should have cleared it up years earlier.
newbieITguy2@reddit
I remember it like this
LeoTheBigCat@reddit
I was there, 3000 years ago. They really did say that.
Ryokurin@reddit
Jerry Nixon said it. And Microsoft never corrected the statement. The press ran with it as official.
Askey308@reddit (OP)
Statement by Jerry Nixon in 2015 but MS later changed the idea of Windows as a Service.
HotPieFactory@reddit
But you sure didn't listen, did you?
Plane_Garbage@reddit
I mean, who gives a rats about an operating system nowadays.
I click on the taskbar and move a window, open file explorer. That's about the extent of my interaction with an OS.
Drywesi@reddit
Those of us who want a responsive computer that doesn't gunk up everything with crap, that's who.
my_name_isnt_clever@reddit
You're a sysadmin and you never interact with your OS? Is everything you do in the cloud or something?
No_Dog9530@reddit
Honestly speaking MS should give up on Win 11, it’s got enough bad press already and go full steam ahead with Win 12 with all the improvements they have been promising last few weeks.
admalledd@reddit
But that means they'll have to create yet another control panel/settings app replacement!
No_Dog9530@reddit
Honestly I prefer control panel over the settings app. Even a phone settings have more customization option rather than the crap available in Win 11
admalledd@reddit
The list of users preferring Settings App is vanishingly small IMO. No one likes the new settings app.
intense_username@reddit
Oh dear. I can only assume that would come with some new baseline hardware requirement, thereby contributing to more nonsensical e-waste such as what Windows 11 oh-so-eloquently held the line with.
linoleumknife@reddit
Windows 12: only compatible with ARM, RISC-V, and PowerPC.
simask234@reddit
There did actually exist a PPC (and certain other RISC platforms, like DEC Alpha) port of Windows NT 4. But unlike modern Windows on ARM, there was no way to run x86 programs. Later SPs dropped support for anything other than i386 and Alpha, and Windows 2000 only supported x86. They tried again with XP and Intel's Itanium architecture, but it was also discontinued once x86-64 began gaining popularity in the workstation market.
pdp10@reddit
NT has run on: i860, MIPS 3000, x86, Alpha, little-endian PowerPC, Itanium, x86_64, 32-bit ARM, 64-bit ARMv8. WinCE additionally supported SuperH.
simask234@reddit
Yeah, I think this was definitely the right move from MS...
accidentlife@reddit
Yes please.
X86 needs to die a fiery death.
orion3311@reddit
And the version number: 10.12
pdp10@reddit
I think Apple trademarked that one.
couldhietoGallifrey@reddit
Worse than that - 10.0.2601.12345
Windows 11 is still actually 10.0.
RainStormLou@reddit
with hundreds of links back to control panel items still.
I will never quit bitching about how damn stupid it was for them to do that on windows server. it's a server. it doesn't need to be user friendly and simplified. it needs to be admin accessible and highly functional.
pdp10@reddit
If marketing is going to deliver on its promise of needing fewer and cheaper personnel, it does. Touchscreen tile server admin for everyone.
cool_slowbro@reddit
And leave it half finished with most of the useful functions still exclusively found on the old one.
5panks@reddit
I just want to be able to have multiple windows or tabs open please!
DonL314@reddit
Not "Windows 12", that's too easy.
They should change to a new branding scheme (as they have done before) so you absolutely cannot figure out the version history just by looking at the names.
I suggest "Windows BX", "Windows Uranium", "Windows Townhall" or something like that.
pdp10@reddit
Windows Pro, Windows Max, Windows Pro Max, Windows Ultimate, Windows Pro Ultimate, Windows Air. Easy.
labalag@reddit

Copilot 360 OS
japanfrog@reddit
no they don't. There is no official release and even in the OEM program there is not a single mention about Windows 12. This is probably just a FujiFilm website dev being silly or they used AI to code their website and it made stuff up.
Askey308@reddit (OP)
I'm thinking AI as "vibe coding" is becoming more popular. 😂
RainStormLou@reddit
they teach classes on it at real schools. I had a candidate recently that I thought was fucking with me during the interview until I pulled up their credentials and found the vibe coding cert. it's not anything reputable as far as industry certs go, but it was a accredited school "conferring" that certificate out to poor kids who are going to have to explain that shit awkwardly when a disgruntled admin hears about it lol.
Askey308@reddit (OP)
Oh no, please tell me you're kidding?
RainStormLou@reddit
I wish I was but all the crap I keep making dumb jokes about keeps becoming real, and worse, everyone around me is seemingly excited about it.
I'm not that old but I'm starting to feel like an old man because back in my day we would freak out if we found out Microsoft was snooping our chat data and now it seems like most organizational leadership can't give it to Microsoft fast enough.
pdp10@reddit
The same ones are planning for computers to drive their car, too. But not without them in the driver's seat, which would at least make sense.
RevLoveJoy@reddit
That's why all my dumb jokes these days have some phrase or clause in them were I get filthy rich and vanish.
ImScaredofCats@reddit
I teach programming and next year thanks to the qualification we teach being changed, an assessed task involves how well they can prompt AI to make code for specific task.
TotallyInOverMyHead@reddit
Please tell me you teach coding / scripting the classical way still, and Ai Prompting is just a small part of your programing / scripting course
ImScaredofCats@reddit
Yes I do it the classic way absolutely and the results speak for themselves, I'm really reluctant to teach them 'vibe coding'.
TotallyInOverMyHead@reddit
i mean i DO get it. I myself use Claude to write/rewrite some powershell scripts of mine. But then i do give very specific instructions and test them beforehand on the testing environment.
Its just easier than looking up all the script commands manually. But doing whole programms or open-web facing sites ? ... i'm not sure thats such a good idea, especially when some person decides to automate it.
ImScaredofCats@reddit
That's my misgivings on the task, I find usually the more you ask it to make a whole program, the worse the ouput becomes and the less it actually listens/makes changes.
Chrostiph@reddit
to be fair: there prolly will be a new brand name, they will use "Windows 11" and at a certain technology milestone have to come up with a fresh marketing name. "Windows Cloud" - I don't think they will use "12", or as other mentioned Windows "Future", "Windows 2030", "Windows Copilot"
rfc2549-withQOS@reddit
It's Windows 12 (new) copilot (new) edition

AHrubik@reddit
Yeah... no. Microsoft doesn't release an OS without extensive Alpha and Beta testing. Maybe a "beta" is on the horizon but I highly doubt they would have been able to keep the existence of an "alpha" build secret.
ratshack@reddit
Omg thanks, I needed that laugh.
Iseeapool@reddit
... you are the bêta tester.
Ryokurin@reddit
It was well rumored that 25H2 had a lot of contention on if it should be named Windows 12, or if they should wait until they have something more substantial to offer, like AI capabilities and such. Someone at FujiFilm just made an assumption so they wouldn't have to add it later.
ApertureNext@reddit
Windows 11 is supposed to get much bigger changes than we've seen so far, at least if Microsoft still have those plans that were talked about around the launch of 11.
berryer@reddit
Honestly for several major versions it seems like the only reason they cut a new one is to push out new anti-features and then cut support for the versions without those anti-features. I haven't seen anything terrible enough since W11's launch to justify a new major version just yet.

admalledd@reddit
My hearing was more "if (big if) W12 anytime soon, earliest would be for a Q4/Q1 announcement for a summer release". IE: If there was going to be a W12 soon, we'd expect official teaser blogs/etc for ~six ish months before the proper release. Similar has been done since at least Vista.
ParticularDonut7555@reddit
It’s not just a glitch; it’s a sign that the next major OS cycle is starting behind the scenes.
The "Hudson Valley" Leak: Internal Microsoft projects have been circulating among OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) like FujiFilm for months. These companies are required to have "Windows 12 Ready" drivers months before the OS actually hits the public.
phpfiction@reddit
Will be funny if the min requirements are Intel 12th or above, 32gb ram ddr5 min and a dedicated graphic card 3050, just in the shortage.
I mean if windows 11 was forced programed obsolescence with Spyware.
