Anyone else tired of purchasing?

total old person yells at cloud post.
I am sick and tired of making transactions. anyone else feel the same?
Shrinkflation, lesser quality, warranties at Walmart, subscription fees.... every place you go is disappointing.
Starbucks used to be a great break during the day. now, the quality has dropped in the dirt and the prices are sky high.
Restaurants all get their food from the same supplier, the prices are insane, and the expectations for tips are going wild- your food gets dropped off and you get forgotten about, and they drop the bill an hour later with a 25% or more suggested tip calculated on the bill, or worse yet, the Restaurant itself adds a fee.
Basically everywhere you go, they want your money, give minimal service, and tell you to fuck off.
We used to compare slimy people to "used car salesmen"... and the used car salesmen of our youth had more scruples than most corporations do now with the bait and switch.
as a kid, if we bought something and it broke, the store stood behind it.
when I bought a guitar or a bike at a shop, they would welcome you back for tips and tune ups and support.
you had a problem and called a company, the people on the phone knew their shit or could at least weird the authority to refund your money.
now, you get a third party call center with no power to troubleshoot and no power to authorize a return or refund.
I am so tired of being viewed as an ATM with legs.
seriously, I am at the point where I choose not to buy things I want because it just isnt worth the hassle.
thanks for reading my rant. I am gonna go shake my fist at the clouds some more.

Cut out the stuff that isn't satisfying anymore. Why pay for mediocre - vote with your wallet.
Do one subscription service at a time, swap em out. Or get rid of em all together. Most libraries have free DVD rentals.
Fire door dash and all that dumb delivery stuff.
It's easy to fire the lazy servers at a restaurant, just get it as take-out...
People are convinced Walmart is the cheapest, but it's not really the cheapest for everything.
Most of everything purchased from Online is not the cheapest....
Do all your errands at once and go in a circle. Save gas.
Go to the most affluent neighborhood in your city and go their "resale shop". Brand new stuff with tags or worn once if that. They buy expensive Clothes that can be gotten for basically cheap.
There's a bunch of stuff that can be done to cut out the middle man and nonsense stuff one doesn't really need.
No_Can_7713@reddit
The thrift stores in the rich part of town are the best! My daughter got an Aritiza hoodie with the damn price tag still on it for $20.
Over_Sand7935@reddit
Nice. Another trick, is to shop out of season. Way more shorts to be found in Winter. Way more coats to found in Summer

On libraries: get Libby for books (works in browsers and as an app on mobile devices) and install Hoopla on your TV to check out movies from the library for free.

The fast food available is horrible. I don’t know how many times I’ll have to “touch a hot stove” before I stop going back. Fast food takes longer than it would take he to make it and costs me more
Oldebookworm@reddit
That doesn’t work as well as it used to. If you replace a Visa card, Visa will update any recurring merchants that request the new number. To get around that, tell the associate you’re talking to remove your card from visas automatic updates (VAU)
triloci@reddit
As accurate as "ATM with legs" is, I've always considered myself more of a "Why don't you just hook the pump to my arm and suck the blood out directly?" kind of guy.

An ATM with legs is how I feel every time I hear a commercial.
1967TinSoldier@reddit
I make such places mad because I pay in cash instead of card and tell them before they can try to put it in the register how much change I get back. "Don't ask for a tip if all you did was take the order." One place said I wasn't welcomed back because of that. To which I said I could cook the same meal with better products at least 15% cheaper. Your loss, not mine.
sas317@reddit
Yes, especially after the great inflation of '21-'22. Transactions pain me.

I sent someone 100 bucks for a puppy. Went to the address to get the dog. It was all fake. That's how stupid, trusting I am. People are rotten.
NoOil535@reddit
They raised prices for one reason or another then they don't come down, we just get used to it. Any increase in never offsets the increase in cost of living. So many expect to get to wage for minimal experience and effort. Wage disparity seems farther apart than ever of what executives to workers make. I just don't know anymore.
Rich_Boston@reddit
I can’t argue. Everywhere you turn someone is trying to pick your pocket. It’s not a nice world any longer. No integrity or honor. Yesterday I received an order for $30 worth of salted nuts i had made online. But i received UNsalted nuts. Their error but they wont pay the $12 return postage. “Why don’t you just eat them and we’ll take 10% off your next order.” It used to be that when it was clear that the company made the error they would bend over backwards to make you happy. In a situation like this, they would tell you to keep the nuts and do what you wanted with them and they immediately shipped you out the correct order. Nope. No more. I have placed over a dozen orders with this company and never had a problem. It’s not like I’m a chronic complainer and it’s clear that the error was on their end. Unfortunately, this is becoming more common. Companies just take the attitude that they don’t care. Go someplace else if you want. Very frustrating.
JD_tubeguy@reddit
I cook a lot and try to spend as little as possible some weeks it works better than others.
bb9116@reddit
This is the way. Once you've cooked long enough, you reach a point where eating out is less attractive, as you can get better food at home.
GypsyDoVe325@reddit
Done this most my life. I could never comprehend paying $30 for a plate of spaghetti when for that price at the time I could've fed a large family with leftovers that tasted way better as well. I grew up with my grandparents so I experienced making homemade bread and rustic farm life. Lived rural most my life and learned to make a lot handmade that lasted a lot longer than store bought. More work and time but much of it I find medatative and the satisfaction in creating something useful & unique is something I enjoy.

Impossible-Race8239@reddit
Yes. Absolutely sick and tired. Feels like the world has been gutted of everything other than the transactional. Even basic social media people who have a fairly small following will inevitably have a patreon, which to me is just a form of begging. Just as onlyfans is prostitution. Not that there’s anything wrong with either of those things but let’s call a spade a spade. Everything is transactional. It’s one of the many, many things that’s making me want to retreat from the world more and more (like politics atm, for example; cost of living, housing crisis, etc)
Grazmahatchi@reddit (OP)
"Feels like the world has been gutted of everything other than the transactional"....
Perfectly said.
From consuming to service and even relationships- everything is transactional.
Everyone wants to "win" in every arena.
Covid made it so much worse- half the population decided courtesy and respect was for weak losers.
Reading back over the arguments against masks is like reading ridiculous fiction.
It seems so insane that people were angry that we were trying to stop breathing our germs all over everyone and keep the hospitals from getting overwhelmed.
People just suck when all they can think of is "winning".
grandma-activities@reddit

UGH. All it takes to be called a "Karen" -- socially acceptable term for bitch, if you ask me -- is to disagree. You don't even have to raise your voice or make an unreasonable demand. I hate it.
I also hate that it makes my cousin Karen uncomfortable to share her name.

I last ate McDonalds about 25 years ago. It's not good, but it close and cheap and as I'm returning from a day of hiking, I thought "why not?" It had been so long prior since I had any fast food, I ate it, having forgotten the poor quality, massive salt and sugar in every bite.
Spin ahead some 15 years and after having experienced a particularly ugly virus, I found myself both recovering and famished. Having decided I was ready for another foray into the fast-food world, I decided to respond to a Wendy's advert for a large lunch. the exact burger I cannot recall, but it did include (small sizes all) of fries, chili, frosty, and a beverage of sorts. The bill tallied almost $15.00.
At that time, I could have trekked across the street to a "Black-eyed Pea" sit-down restaurant and enjoyed a freshly made chicken fried steak, two veggie sides, fresh to order made in the kitchen, and a beverage--they had great iced tea. And every meal came with a basked of homemade cornbread and dinner rolls.
Now I see McDonald's offering a burger for a $10.00-$13.00 depending on the location and toppings.
While groceries have astronomically increased in price over the past year, it remains healthier and less costly to eat at home. Also, if I might say so myself, much better cooking and ingredients.
wingdrummer15@reddit
Yeah man. The world sucks a big dick now. Everyone that's not a rich piece of shit feels this way.
Embarrassed-Bet-4092@reddit
And don’t get me started on QUALITY!! Planned obsolescence. Clothing and shoes are a joke - unless you’re spending big, it’s not lasting long enough to make it to the goodwill. And it’s not natural fiber. Even when you do spend, it’s shite. Can’t trust the food - fillers, artificial crap, about 45 more ingredients than is necessary. Last time I made bread, high fructose corn syrup wasn’t in it. Can’t even buy a TV that last more than 3 years.
mettaCA@reddit
That's fast fashion. There are other options of good quality clothing but it does cost more and it is generally not sold in regular general store (walmart, target, khol's, etc.). It will generally last longer as well.
mettaCA@reddit
I stopped going to restaurants because of my lipids. I have no idea if they have saturated fats in their foods or not. I go once a year to an mom and pop ethiopian restaurant for my birthday. That's it. I have had to spend more on food, not just because of inflation, but also because the foods without saturated fat are harder to find and more costly.
longagofaraway@reddit
everything is shit now. i used to believe in my ability to sort through reports and data and identify the quality products and brands for a given purchase. now it's all shit. the reviews are shit. the products are all bootlegs and knockoffs. the service techs are all kids with no training. every single transaction leaves you feeling like you got scammed.
Grazmahatchi@reddit (OP)
Totally.
I was always a "save for the good stuff and buy it once" guy, but most items dont have a "good stuff" category.
Case in point, vacuums. No matter how much I spend on one, a plastic bit breaks here or there and they just fall apart.
I remember as a kid, my mom had one of those monster canister vacuums... was around longer than I was by about one year.
When I was mid 30s, my mom was too decrepit to pull that thing around anymore and wanted an upright.
She gave the canister vac to a neighbor, and for all I know it still sucks.
longagofaraway@reddit
man. laundry machines. you used to be able to walk into sears and choose between 4 or 5 rock solid machines that'd cost ~$200 and would last 20 years. now it's 3 grand for a glass bubble pos that'll break in 2 years if you're lucky.

My only ask now is to just please screw me over 1 way. Either increase the price or lower quantity or lower quality. Not all 3.
grandma-activities@reddit
Right? I was pissed in 2008 when a 5-lb bag of sugar became a 4-lb bag of sugar for the same price. But it stayed a 4-lb bag, and the price just keeps going up and up and up. I'm surprised the companies haven't shrunk it to a 3-lb bag.

Yes. Welcome to the world of sounding like your grandparents.
We're here.
I grew up with all my great- grandmothers and also my great- great- grandmother until I was 13.
I'm old school and do hearing other people b!+ch and complain about how it was when we grew up...
It's never going to be that way again. We need to realize that these youngster generations aren't going to fit into OUR lifestyle. Respect is gone. It was when technology was born.
My fellow GenXers, when you sadly realize We ARE the last of all of them. I mean those that sat and told stories face to face. Sunday dinners with the family at Grandma's, all the beautiful things we had without technology getting in the middle of our family, causing disrespect, distraction, adultery at the drop of a button, greed is the foundation of everything, you'll live a little better.
We can still get out and make a difference. Have weekly potlucks with board games. Cookie exchanges, fun in our backyards, things with the family, but we have to be the change.
I must tell you, whatever your belief, remember take it day by day and realize this home isn't ours, it's temporary. Heaven is on the other side.
So friends, make it a beautiful 😍 day whatever you do. Find the silver linings And stay blessed.

At the end of the day, we're animals. Just like squirrels, rabbits, dogs, cats.... We need fuel every single day.
We think we're above it all, because we have a bit more intelligence than the rest of the creatures, but each time we have to eat meals and go piss, and take a dump, it reminds us that we aren't in control of any of this shit. We're dirty.... filthy.... animals. Pretending we're civilized, intelligent creatures.
Efficient_Market1234@reddit
FWIW, we have it way easier than anyone else has had it throughout history. It's part of our day now, thinking about where to go for lunch, what to buy the store, whatever. But historically, for most people, your entire day was dedicated to the food supply and/or food preparation in some way. Hunting, gathering, fishing, farming, animal husbandry, butchering, grinding flour, hand-making dough, baking, tending fires, canning/jarring preserves, drying meat, you name it. It was a huge percentage of your day, every day, and took actual real physical labor, just so you could survive to do it again another day and then finally die of something stupid or be bled to death by a "healer." And you were constantly subject to the whims of mother nature and the risk of injury at every turn.
We've still not eliminated the need to "deal with" food and eating, of course, but it's much less time and WAY less physical effort. Hell, I don't even have to go to the store. I could open a tab on my web browser and order it to be brought to me. And hell, I use Cook Unity (speaking of paid services), which delivers 8 meals to me a week on my doorstep. I just have to heat them up.
I think food stands out as annoying in part because it requires more effort and thought than our other needs. Breathing, we just do automatically. Sleep, you just lie down and it sort of "happens." Drinking fluids, that's not too hard to acquire or do. Food (and sex, but that's not a need in the same sense) requires thought and effort and planning, whether it's an insane amount (as it once did) or a little (as we can have now, especially if we want to pay for convenience).
Grazmahatchi@reddit (OP)

There has to be a braking point. Talking to the executive chef the other day, and asked how do we intend to sell a plate of biscuits and gravy for $10? He looks at me and said because the place down the street is already charging $12. To me that doesn't make it right. People only have so much money. At some point they are just going to stop buying shit. Not because they want to but because they can't. I pray for a disruption of some kind. The great common sense reset needs to happen.
CheezyGoodness55@reddit
He's not wrong. As long as people continue to pay the prices, the beatings will continue...I mean, the prices will remain high. Yes, we have to suck it up in some capacity for life's necessities (groceries, gas, utilities), but we all have a lot more room to vote with our wallets than we think we do. Of course, that would have to happen en masse or at significant levels where it starts taking a serious bit out their profits.

There were companies and corporations when I was young back in the 70s and 80s.
They used to provide valuable goods and services that society needed. There was a kind of symbiotic relationship between business and society.
But today, corporations just seem like their business plan is to tear the copper wiring out of the walls of society to extract every tiny possible bit of profit imaginable and leave nothing left.

All about the money these days. Its not just corporations anymore but anyone and everyone seems all out to get theirs.
Prices in supermarkets will go up the moment they detect that people are buying a certain product. I tested this on a certain brand of chocolates and wine. Its the same product with nothing new but suddenly the price will go up for no reason other than people's buying it.
It sometimes seem to me that even selling your soul to pay for something these days won't be enough to satisfy the absolute greed that's infected this world.
The only thing i know that worked for me was to stop buying the item completely. It took 2yrs but the price for the wine i liked finally dropped by about 30%. So i bought a case hahaha.
m00seabuse@reddit
People will pay 25% more for a product on a DoorDash app and be fine with it. Just wait till your grocery store gets dynamic pricing (it's coming). Gonna be a real shit show to figure out when to shop for which item on what day and what time to get the "best" price.

The doe-eyed look I've gotten for 25 years now telling people why I refuse to shop at Walmart. . . and now when I tell them why we should shop local (because it's literally no longer more expensive than the place with the trademark). . . and why people will refuse anything that isn't convenient anymore. . .
The world has forgotten a lot since the last Great Depression. Not sure how a modern one will go, but I can assure you we'll remember a lot about the last Great Depression when it does. The quality of goods and service has definitely dipped across the board as most of what we buy as middle class consumers are made by the same multinational corporations. However the tipping culture is probably unique to the US and Canada.
salazka@reddit
Also I think it is a mistake to call it "tipping culture".
We tip in Europe too.
In US the culture is of exploitation. Here everyone in the service sector is paid fair and decent salaries. They can live their families with that without begging or threatening or swindling customers to get tips.
salazka@reddit
Not in Europe. We have strict criteria. Not that nothing wrong happens, obviously, shit happens in such vast markets with gazillion of products, but it is difficult for someone to sell the shit people consume in US no matter how much they try.

I don't have one anywhere near me, so I don't, but when I'm doing Google searches to find out which grocery store or whatever has the cheapest price on something, Wal-Mart normally does have the cheapest price.
I know people hate Wal-mart for political reasons and all that, but as an individual consumer, I'm not spending more money for any fucking political reason. Fuck the virtue signaling. I'm not rich enough to virtue signal.

That’s not remotely virtue signaling. It’s voting with your wallet. Quality has gone down because of corporations like Walmart pushing out local businesses and then jacking up the price for their cheap junk when there’s no other option. Yeah, I ended up taking a part time job so I only get 1 weekend off a month. It's hard working so much and not having many proper days off to relax, but the one silver lining is I never have to shop at all anymore. I haven't set foot in our Walmart in over a year. I went to Dollar General to buy 12 eggs for myself a few weeks ago. I ship things at Dollar General like once a week but I walk in, drop it off at the counter and walk right out. Oh my wife sent me to Martin's on Easter day to get hashbrowns. I think those two purchases are my only two shopping trips for at least a year. I love this. My part time job is in retail so I get to see all the schmucks out shopping and I guess I'm benefiting from it, but fuck it I need the money.

Kinda sucks we aren’t getting flirted with by corporations anymore but still, I don’t really want a new car. Mine doesn’t have to be replaced for at least another 3-5 years, 6-10 if I stretch it with a rebuilt engine and transmission, and it is paid for.

I work in insurance. I have to call other insurance carriers often in a professional capacity. I know precisely what to ask for and from whom to get the information I need. Sometimes I even have a special phone number usable only for B2B contact.
There are carriers I don’t call because their phone trees are impenetrable. AI has made it simultaneously worse and better. It is not uncommon for me to spend fifteen to twenty minutes to get a human being on the line to get a five word answer to a five word question.
All this so billionaires don’t have to pay human beings to answer the goddam phone.

We used to eat out a lot. It was our thing. Prices started getting higher quality while quality went done. It no longer became enjoyable & more of why are we paying for this when I can make better at home (fairly accomplished home cook). Now these days, going to get grocery store sends me into old man tirades due to the insane over inflated cost of groceries. Just filling the top rack of the small carts comes to $60-$80 of produce, meat, & the occasional canned good (almost no pre-made processed foods) there’s a real issue.
krneki534@reddit

Basic quality ingredients can be cooked in a delicious meal in 30 minutes. Of course depends where you live, but if you are lucky and can cook the Mediterranean diet you will enjoy food and life.

Jenpeg13@reddit
This resonates so much! I feel like I’m a moaning ‘old woman’ but I’m soooo sick of feeling ripped off and under valued. Food in restaurants is awful, no one cares, service is terrible. Food shopping bankrupts you, quality has gone. I have a semi good job and my husband works too but we can’t afford most basic things now never mind holidays or nice meals (if they still exist!) I feel like big corporations have exploited us since Covid and Brexit, using it as an excuse to rip us all off. I’m not extravagant, spend most of my time at home or work. My 9 year old isn’t dressed in expensive clothes etc but we are still struggling. I worry for other families who are in a worse position than us. I feel like as a society we are getting taken advantage of. I feel like everyone in the customer service sector also gives zero f*cks and the customer just isn’t valued anymore…
Glad I got that off my chest and it’s not just me!!!

Reboot-Glitchspark@reddit
My house was built in the 1930s and I thought it has tiny closets. But then I realized most people back then had maybe two sets of regular daily clothes and one set of 'Sunday best' and that was about it. And they had to make them last.
Nowadays I like the idea of "just pick one set of things, have multiple of each piece (shirt, pants, etc.) and wear them like a uniform for life." It's one less thing to think about or make decisions about, when getting dressed and when buying new clothes.
myeggsarebig@reddit
Yep. I have a uniform - skinny cut or harem pants (heavy or thin depending on weather), a tank/camisole, a cardigan, and quality footwear. It makes shopping for clothing so much easier, and I know no matter the variations of my uniform, I will be comfortable!! And if I wanna feel a little cute, I’ll accessorize with belts, scarves, jewelry. It makes packing a lot easier too!
decodogs@reddit
Oh my god yes. I got so sick of it I started cutting my own hair, make my own soap, moisturizer, candles, chapstick, bread. myeggsarebig@reddit

One of the best and worst things to happen to me is losing everything I ever owned from escaping domestic violence. I mean everything. In addition, I had to hide, so no full time job, and I was in a totaling car accident, so I lost my shelter and way to make grocery/gas money with Uber/Door dash.
I learned real quick what is/isnt necessity. I’ve never been a stuff person, never cared to accumulate unnecessary household items. What is necessity - a roof to protect from the elements (a cozy bed), food, a decent working kitchen, quality clothing and footwear, and a way to make an income - transportation. Costs can be cut with donated food, and clothing, but rent and transportation are entirely up to the individual to figure out.
Humans should be able to easily work enough to pay for the bare minimum; 40 hours should be sufficient to sustain life, nothing more; nothing less, just surviving.
I’m currently staying with friends who have been incredibly kind, welcoming, loving, non judgmental and I will forever be indebted so I do not unfavorably think less of them by saying this. They buy wasaaaaay too much STUFF. Amazon must stop by this house 2-3x a day. If they’re not spending 100$ a night to order food, they’re making something extravagant that usually requires a gadget they need to buy, along with expensive ingredients. In 1 month, they’ve spent 5k on concerts alone (flying overseas). They live a comfortable life. And, again, I’m incredibly grateful that they’re helping me out - I do a lot of work around the house - every morning they wake to breakfast, a clean kitchen, trash out, dogs individually walked and fed, and coffee brewing. I give them all my food stamps. I try to stay in my room.
Anyway, I’m really looking forward to when I can purchase some land, with a tiny house, and a small farm with chickens, fruits and veggies - one great step I took after escaping was finding a farm that I could get experience with - I lived for a year, in exchange for food/rent, and I am technically a qualified farm hand. I’m getting ready to go work on another farm and I’ll continue this path until I have the money to do it on my own— and I will!!
We have the power to change the way we spend money. If we boycotted spending just for a day, the billionaires would poop themselves. But we love our stuff and our convenience, and if we tell the truth, we want the government to regulate laws to make our lives less expensive. As long as we keep signaling to them that we’re still going to buy Starbucks, Door Dash, Uber (instead of PT), and all the other BS that will end up in a landfill, they’ll continue to raise prices.
We have the power. I really hope the next generations can take a stand.

Overall expectations for standards of living are way higher than they used to be. Think about when we were growing up (70's and 80's for me). We didn't have cable TV let alone a bunch of streaming services. We rarely went out to eat and when we did McDonald's or Shakee's was a treat. One of our two cars didn't have air conditioning. I shared a bedroom with two brothers.
Now everyone expects a McMansion and a luxury car and goes out to eat weekly and subscribes to a bunch of streaming services.

regarding tipping, a lot of that comes from employees not actually getting a living wage so in some aspects, I get it. Don't blame the employees, blame the corporations that focus on shareholders rather than their employees and customers

and I never said that you had to take care of them. I just gave a reason as to why tips are often being asked for. and if you notice it is part of the payment system, which is something that employees really don't have any control over it.

I notice you didn't mention that those employees shouldn't blame the customers. That's very telling and a huge part of the problem

blaming the customers for what exactly? I just mentioned a reason as to why tips are being asked for...and often it is baked into the payment system, something that the business owners control. not the employees nor the customers.

The business model that allows employees to get paid like that is outdated. It has to go.
People used to joke about french waiters being bad because of them being paid an actual wage and tipping being far less prevalent.

verstohlen@reddit
Man, you said it. When you eat out, probably 20 percent of your money goes to the actual food, and 80 percent of what you pay for is the restaurant's utility bills, the heating/cooling, electrcity/gas/water, the property taxes, insurance, employee's wages, building maintenance, landscaping, and advertising. That's why I cook at home. I don't answer the door for anyone who is selling something. I canceled all unnecessary subscriptions and don't have memberships to Sam's or Costco. I never went to Starbucks, even when it was really popular. I make my coffee at home.
IHadTacosYesterday@reddit
You don't need a membership to buy stuff at Costco. You just need a friend with one. You have them buy you a Costco "Shop" card. You can put any denomination on it. I will give my buddy $200 cash money, and he will give me a Costco "Shop" card with $200 on it. Then, I can go to Costco and get gas, or use the food court, or shop inside, and I can use my Costco "Shop" card and everything is fine. I can go by myself, and I can go to any Costco. My buddy only has to buy the card and then I can use it all by myself from that point until it runs out of funds. The only downside is that when you actually get to the cashier for them to ring you up, they have to get a manager to approve it, so there's a slight delay. But other than that, it's all gravy. I don't think a manager is needed if you're getting gas or eating at the food court.
I live by myself, so actually having a full-blown membership would be a terrible idea. I only go to Costco maybe 3 or 4 times a year. I always buy the Kirkland paper towels and toilet paper and I will always buy their 12 packs of Croissants from their bakery.
There's a few other things I will buy from time to time.
TP_Crisis_2020@reddit
To be fair, a Costco membership pays for itself if you buy enough food. I buy all of my meats in bulk there and it's significantly cheaper than anywhere else if you buy in quantity. I'll buy a 10 pound loaf of 80/20 ground beef that is usually around $6 a pound and section it out into 1 pound vacuum seal bags and freeze them. Also, if you get a Costco Citi card and use that to pay for your groceries there, the rewards you get each year will directly pay for the membership so it's essentially a free membership.

Tipping culture has been out of control for years now. Not even just in restaurants, but almost everywhere you go now other than grocery stores they are always begging for tips. Subway asks for tips now. Even food trucks now are asking for tips. What is sad about this, is that they do it because there is always a group of people who will tip no matter what, and they enable this behavior.
I literally haven't been to a sit down restaurant in years. The value is not there.
IHadTacosYesterday@reddit
Usually these people are SCARED TO DEATH of what strangers might think of them. This is why they tip everywhere. They don't want the cashier or person helping them to god forbit think they might be a cheap bastard.
That's why they have those little tablets that are faced towards the cashier, and then they turn it around to face you for the tipping part. They're literally counting on other people being behind you in line, and you getting anxious that either people behind you in line, or the cashier might think you're a horrible cheap person.
Me? I give no fucks. I will hit the $0.00 option every fucking time. Get bent.

The OG stores when they started were really good, fresh roasted beans, and fresh ground coffee, but not now, they’re shit, just like Dutch Bros.

People with the Dutch Bros stickers on the their cars are people with shit taste in coffee.

But back in the day all we had was gross gas station or Cafe coffee that tasted like hot water with a brown crayon melted in it.
Shitty Starbucks was a huge step up.

What happened to your arms? Did you have to sell them to cover your transaction fee's? ;)
Yeah I get it. Same. Everyone wants a piece of your wallet. Every time I get to thinking about it I always think about Britney's Piece of Me. Not that I'm a fan of her (type) of music (give me Zeppelin!) nor was I ever famous but that song's lyrics absolutely resonate towards this.

Something cost me an arm and a leg- I figured I would be too off balance at that price so I pitched 2 arms and it worked.

I agree with this whole post. My solution is to shop at 2 nd hand stores. This way Im never really that disappointed because I usually find a good deal and my expectations of the product Im purchasing are far lower than if I was to buy it new.
Trillian75@reddit
Even most of those are shit these days where I live. No more fitting rooms, so you have to just guess if it’s going to fit or try on over your clothes. Prices are super high now, and in some cases, higher than new (Goodwill, I’m looking at you). Resellers have already picked the store over and bought up anything good to sell on eBay. There are still a few good shops, but it’s not like it was.
Tim-no@reddit
This is a very good point. I’m in a relatively big city so there are still a few around that have some decent clothing, however, you’re right the options are decreasing at a rapid rate.

I'm tired of being asked to donate to some cause every other store or restaurant i go to. Most of these causes do little for what they claim to support, but rather are devices to make someone rich. They are businesses, not actual charities.
I remember thinking it was weird to see so many toys made in Taiwan or Korea. Now it's weird to see something made in America.
I'm tired of seeing dollar general type stores at each end of small towns and dead local businesses in the middle.
I'm tired of hearing politicians bitch the government won't give "x" program money for those in need, yet do nothing about the billions lost to fraud. If they had prevented the fraud, there would be money for the programs. 30% of my income goes to the government and others, and they want more. They're doing fuck all with it, giving it to people whose work is fake businesses.
I'm tired of being called fascist by fascists.
I miss when you weren't hated for being on a political side, having your own opinion or thoughts.
I miss debating people who weren't reciting things they read on Reddit or watched on tikTok. People who actually knew something, versus knowing what someone else said that made them feel good, true or not.

Omg you hit the nail on the head!! I feel this in every single way! We are currently moving from Alaska to Washington state and everyone everywhere says "just offload your stuff, you can get it all when you get there". Problem for me is I don't want to buy a couch that's made worse and falls apart in a few years, or well, any other items for the same reason. Nothing is made well anymore and I'm super tired of even shopping. Online shopping is just ridiculous, can you just Google the item you need? Not usually. Modern American life is flat our garbage.

Was so mad today - went to a car wash to get my car cleaned. It's one of those automated ones, that you drive up to. Yet they still have some kid out there pushing the buttons and taking my card like I'm incapable of reaching 10 inches out of my window to do it myself. Then the little turd has the audacity to ask if I'd like to leave a tip!
I just sat there dumbfounded for a second and asked why? I could have done all of this myself and avoided the unnecessary social interaction.
Eff you Mister Car Wash. Eff you.

I bought a high end sweatshirt from a low key menswear designer and found it had holes in it just a few months after purchase while the second identical one did not. I told them that a high quality and expensive product like this should last many years and that I wanted them to make it right before I took to social media. I went on their website, chatted with most likely an AI bot and then got an email from them asking for proof of purchase and photos. Once provided they issued me a full refund credit. Sometimes going that route gets you somewhere.

I read your title, and my mind instantly went to the Howie Mandel HBO comedy special. He did a lot of crowd work and asked someone what she did for a living. She said, “I’m in purchasing.” He replied, “So you shop.” Then he mimed walking with a cart saying, “I’m, purchasing.”
Loved those HBO comedy specials.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Everything around you is designed to manipulate you into spending money. Everything. Even the design of stores. They make you walk the entire store to get to the most commonly sold items, on the off chance you'll buy something else as well. It's all a trap for your wallet.

It's amazing how little I can spend when everything is crap. With no debt whatsoever, I can live on less than 70% of what I bring home. I'll probably pick up a 3rd car in a year or so if the economy settles down (I do have enough sense to not take on a new loan right now) but it is nice knowing I could take a substantial pay cut and still be OK.
I don't want your apps, memberships, rewards or bonus products. I'm tired of everything being enshitified. Maye I should be happy, I've found driving and cars to be one thing I enjoy, and there's plenty of spare money to do that now.

My response is to just mostly not spend. Most things are a waste of money. Most shopping is not a pleasurable experience.
I shop at the Goodwill and look for vintage quality J Crew & Banana Republic. I don’t need a lot of new clothes anyway. I mostly use what I have.
I buy good food and at least one night a week we have something super cheap and simple like rice and beans or lentils. Then another day I’ll buy a quality piece of fish or meat.
If I find a local shop or restaurant that’s great, I’m a devoted customer. But I haven’t found many!
I am mostly using what I already own now and have cut out a lot of what used to fun stuff. Not because I can’t afford it, but because it’s all overpriced.
Don’t get me started on airline tickets!
rob-cubed@reddit
Everything's gotten expensive. At the same time it's gotten enshittified because all the 'value add' aspects like good service, product longevity, or warranties have been dropped to maximize short-term profit.
I really can't blame the cashier at my local Burgers 'R' Us not giving a fuck. They aren't making enough to survive off the income from their 35-hour a week job (intentionally kept part-time so their employer can avoid paying for sick days, vacation, overtime, or health insurance).
Unhappy, poorly paid workers have no incentive to try harder.

No joke, this happened to my mom. She was so tight with the UPS guy that he'd bring in her stuff (hsn addiction) and use the restroom and have a coke. One day he found her unconscious! He called 911 and waited until they came. A true lifesaver!
no_id_never@reddit
In my defense, all that household stuff that used to mean 4 trips to the store in a week now lands on my doorstep. I dutifully recycle all that cardboard, but this house doesn't run out of consumables. Even during the great tp debacle in early covid, we were good to go. It may look like Christmas, but the vitamins, and cleaners, and paper goods, and snacks, and pet food, etc that I was going to have to buy either way just shows up. I sort of miss walking the aisles somewhere, but if I went for 10 things, I came home with 20. In a weird way, those boxes on the porch help keep me in check. I try to group things into a single order, but Amazon too-often sends it all in separate pkgs. That part drives me nuts!

On the rare occasions I watch TV with ads in, usually YouTube, I'm struck by how many 'markets' I'm either priced out of or refused to participate in for whatever reason.
That's always been the case with Mercedes commercials and the like but now it's even brand name groceries and mid tier restaurants and even fast food.
Forest_of_Cheem@reddit
You’re not alone. Late stage capitalism is getting frustrating. All they care about is short term profit. They don’t invest in their products or their staff, so enshittification is guaranteed at a minimum. Some of my favorite products and companies aren’t worth it any more and it’s harder and harder to find suitable alternatives.
Stereo_Jungle_Child@reddit
That's because the prevailing sentiment is that there isn't going to BE a "long term". These companies are betting that 'the end of the world as we know it' is right around the corner, and they're just trying to "get theirs" before everything falls apart.
They see human society's future as the end of "Thema and Louise": Running that big ugly Cadillac right off the edge of the cliff with our foot planted firmly on the gas. Going out with a bang.

So, I really like green tea. I find small suppliers and spend a bit more for quality. I then make my own tea. Overall it’s less expensive than buying tea (or coffee), and more satisfying.
I also spend a lot of time making music in my own and with friends. Other than the initial process of an instrument, it’s free.
Maybe try to do more things like that. Find small, quality things you can enjoy.

I think part of it might be that we have moved through the acquisition phase of our lives, have everything we really need, and getting new stuff is losing its appeal. If anything, I want to get rid of stuff.
Every time I see something new I think I want, I try to visualize where it will live in my home, and how it will fit in the flow of my days. If I can’t find a place for it, or if I have something similar that I can use, it doesn’t purchased. Something has to be a clear QOL improvement for me to consider it.
RoninRobot@reddit
My related fatigue is “Line Goes Up.” Used to be there was a product made and it was good and it stayed good because people bought it. Companies made a good profit and settled into a groove. Now the line has to go up regardless. Have a near monopoly and can’t get any more customers? Gradually make things for cheaper with shitty substitute parts / ingredients and sell it for more. Cut staff and wages. Point to the graph to your share holders that line goes up. More. More. Why is it unacceptable to make a good product and have good profits? Why do you have to make ALL the profits by turning the knob to enshitification?
