You should have seen it glide on a voodoo 3!

I briefly had a Voodoo 3 3000 in my possession late last year/early this year as part of a build I was auctioning off for charity. Even with a PIII-450 as a CPU in a heavily CPU-limited game, UT '99 ran incredibly smoothly with the most consistent framerates I have ever seen.

I'll try it on my Voodoo 3 + 500 MHz Pentium III before too long!

Don’t forget to change the renderer to glide. 😁

The entire Rage line was pretty bad with OpenGL. It fared better with DirectX.
In UT, you can open the console and type "preferences" to open an advanced setup page. In both OpenGL and DirectX, there are some hidden options that allow you to enable some features that usually only work in Glide. Like table fog, texture compression and detail textures.

Oh boy, that intro still sends shivers up and down my spine.
What a fantastic game still today!

I really wanted to play this game as a teenager, but never got to. I only played it at my friend's house once or twice. Incidentally that very friend is the recipient of the ATI Rage 128 in the video.

I played the hell out of it back in the day with everything maxed on a 1.2Ghz athlon and a GeForce2. It was captivating and there were so many community mods. One I remember was like the game "tag", with "it" wearing a halo and everyone else trying to frag them, winner based on highest cumulative time with the halo. Another mod was called tactical ops, a complete reskin into a kind of early 00s terrorist vs special forces, capture/defend the base kind of game.

I still play it. One of the best games ever in my opinion. I have Unreal Tournament 2004 and Unreal Tournament 3 as well. I was really looking forward to Unreal Tournament IV but then Epic killed the entire franchise.

let me guess
OpenGL selected instead of software render on the left?
ZealousidealCake8256@reddit (OP)
I did NOT select software rendering for either. I wanted to see how it fared with the 3D card, no matter how bad it would turn out.

Now put a Voodoo in it..

All 3 of my Voodoos (Voodoo 1, Banshee, and Voodoo 3) are already in my PCs. This was an upgrade for a friend.
