Wings of Gold vs wings of silver who between the navy and Air Force squadrons provides more thrills

Blues

I'm a pilot in the AF and i've got friends that have served on the Thunderbirds, so of course I'll say Blue Angels.
Dismal_Job5850@reddit
Do u know Col GT
BealeStAviator@reddit
I’m active Air Force. It’s the Blues.
Also, am I the only one who hates how absolutely ridiculous the Thunderbirds’ narrator for the ‘25 season sounded?
DoubtGroundbreaking@reddit
Thunderbirds are better in every way, everyone dick riding the blue angels for absolutely no reason.
Go birds.
But in all seriousness, I've seen both teams do really well and look like crap. Idk about the navy, but the thunderbirds the pilots are typically only assigned to the squadron for 2 years at a time. Which means every time you see them most of the team will be different. Sometimes they are really tight and fly perfectly, other times you see them a little sloppier. Just depends on who's on the team at the time. I would say same with the blue angels, some times i see them and I am blown away, other times theyre not as tight. And i have seen them both more times than I can count.
JBN2337C@reddit
The Thunderbirds really improved their show during the COVID stand down. Tighter formations (they acknowledged getting sloppy,) faster pace, more in front of crowd rejoins, and extra afterburner passes. I really enjoyed the changes, and admit they’re the 1st to actually give me a headache from the noise.
They alternate w/ the Blues here every year, and I’ve seen both teams easily over 100x. Even with the improvements, I still give the Blue Angels the edge for their sheer aggression, and almost unhinged energy. Seeing them blast below the skyscrapers here is quite a sight!

FChief_24@reddit
It doesn't hurt that the Birds use Hopkins while the Angels still take off from Burke. I don't fault the Thunderbirds from moving to Hopkins, but it does take something away from the show.
JBN2337C@reddit
Yeah, you miss a few minutes at the beginning (and noise!) with the takeoff maneuvers, and #6 tends to bail early at the end due to fuel.
Been fun to just go to Hopkins one of the show days to watch the departures / arrivals, plus seeing the smoke trails over Cleveland from a distance.
Was cool seeing them stage from Burke with the T-38.
Alive_Load_1478@reddit
Blue Angels, hands down. They provide a more exciting show, closer flying, more rumble and panache. They are just cooler.
Messyfingers@reddit
The thunderbird's are impressive, and the F-16 in that livery is beautiful. But there's something more raw ane visceral about the Blue Angels performances that makes the thunderbird's look sterile in the same way the thunderbird's make the snowbirds and European subsonic trainer teams seem anemic.
LeftyLife89@reddit
It's thunderbirds. It's plural. It's not thunderbird's.

Numerous-Match-1713@reddit
Raptor solo sweeps both clean.
timelessblur@reddit
I peronsally like the Blue angles more but it could be because the planes are bigger and easy to track and watch. Both are amazing.
WorldlyOriginal@reddit
The roar of their twin engines is significantly louder, too. That definitely helps with the sensory experience factor.
Half of the appeal of a show for me, is hearing that thunderous, rolling wave of jet noise. Impossible to replicate at home
Late-Application-47@reddit
I haven't seen them since the switch to the Super Bug, but the F-18 design in general is just a better show plane than the Viper. Its exceptional slow speed control and high angle-of-attack make for a more impressive display, especially at show center.
richardelmore@reddit
To start with the F-18s are larger and their livery makes them easier to see, the twin engine roar is amazing and their routines just seem to have a bigger WOW! factor.
I will never forget watching the Angels from the western high-rise of the I-90 floating bridge. You could clearly see the pilots in the cockpit during the low passes.
IncredibleVelocity4@reddit
I used to live at the western portal of the mt baker tunnel, so I would walk up on the ridge. You could practically read the HUD as they crossed the ridge.
GreenMonster34@reddit
The Blues are tops in precision flying.
The T-Birds are tops in inpressing crowds with their noise, maneuvers, and overall in-your-face attitude.
They're both amazing but I lean towards the Blues. If I have to choose between them, Blues every time.
As a Canadian, I just wantgo point out the precision formations flown by the Snowbirds. Go watch their Wednesday show from Airventure 2024. It was one of the tightest displays of flying I've ever seen! Blues and Birds get closer, but damn our boys can fly precisely!!
Late-Application-47@reddit
The Angels. No contest.
Steely_Resolve@reddit
Blue angels a few years ago were better, but the new thunderbird route is better I think.
Roger_Freedman_Phys@reddit
The Snowbirds.
Relent_full@reddit
The sad part is that, at an air show I frequent, people start leaving when the Snowbirds start their routine.
The Snowbirds are fine. But neither their planes, now their maneuvers, "wow" the same way the T-birds and the Blue Angels do. I think Canada needs more modern jets. Heck, if they could cobble up some of their aging CF-188's, they could at least have something like the Blue Angels had (except they would Blue Angels of the yesteryears, because the Blues have been using Super Hornets for a few years now).
balsadust@reddit
Blue Angels fly a tighter formation

Golden Knights!
N2DPSKY@reddit
Well, I agree, but not technically a "flight" demo team. Go Army.
zipper86@reddit
Oh, shoot, you're right. It's been so long that I had to look it up, it was the Silver Eagles I was thinking about. They commonly appeared alongside the Golden Knights.
N2DPSKY@reddit
It's okay. I'm ex-Army so Golden Knights is always a good answer.
tattcat53@reddit
Gotta second the Blue Angels. Fat Albert's da bomb!
Fardn_n_shiddn@reddit
I had an apartment that was really close to the downtown airport, direct line of sight maybe 700 yards from the end of the runway
Took a nap one afternoon after a particularly long Saturday night during air show weekend. Was very rudely awakened by a rocket assisted Fat Albert takeoff.
Haven’t had as big of a “holy shit wtf is going on?!?” moment since
First-Power5534@reddit
Fat Albert is no longer part of the show, it’s being refurbished in England. I also read that all Blue Angels shows at military bases are cancelled.
emf686@reddit
Fat Albert isn't performing just for this year. Once they finish the overhaul it'll be back next year.
Only a couple airshows have been canceled so far, El Centro & Lemoore had their shows canceled. They performed at Luke AFB a couple weeks ago and are scheduled for NAS Kingsville in a couple weeks.
JB Charleston, Cherry Point, Pax River, JBER, Oceana, Miramar, Jacksonville, and Pensacola are still all scheduled and happening at the moment.
First-Power5534@reddit
Yes, I should have specified that it’s not part of the show this year since it’s being refurbished. I hope that they will perform at those other shows, I plan on attending a couple of them. Thanks for the update.
Comprehensive_Cow_13@reddit
It's not the OG fat Albert either - it's an ex RAF herc getting an overhaul and paint job iirc.
emf686@reddit
Fat Albert has been a few different aircraft over the years. It came about in 1970 and up until 2002 I think it was 1 or 2 KC-130Fs were Fat Albert over that timespan. It was the same C-130T (164763) from 2002 until 2019 when they acquired an ex RAF C-130J (ZH885) to replace the T model.
It's been the same bird since 2019 (ZH885/170000), it just needed the center wing box replaced because it was nearing end of life. It's already flown with the Blues for 5 show seasons now, but it's just getting maintenance to stay in service longer, not a whole new aircraft.
Comprehensive_Cow_13@reddit
Ah yeah, apologies, the current one is ex RAF but getting it's new wing box over here. Seems we've been getting rid of our hercs for longer than I thought.
Festivefire@reddit
Well we keep making new models, so all the old ones get thrown out as the new ones come in to service. We've gone from A to J since the plane first started.
coblass@reddit
I assume you’re talking about third row back, first guy on the left. /s
Own-Witness-4263@reddit

syzygialchaos@reddit
I freaking love the Snowbirds, they’re awesome
E_sand80@reddit
I’m a former Squid, and was stationed in El Centro, the winter training base of the Blue Angels, so I am biased towards the Blues. They were still flying Charlie model Legacy Hornets back then. The Angels also have a greater difficulty rating, as they don’t wear g-suits due to Hornet’s center stick design.
Zapatos-Grande@reddit
Blue Angles. However, I thought the recent NetFlix Thunderbirds documentary was better than any Blue Angels documentary I've seen.
ITMORON@reddit
I have had the honor of seeing both. The BA several times since I was a kid.
I saw the AF one time, and it blew every BA show out of the water.
They were practicing, over the beach in Gulfport Mississippi. My buddy and I had just arrived to surprise a friend with a visit from over 1000 miles away, we drove down from Va like bats out of hell. You see, our buddy had cancer and was dying. We had to get a visit in. We all had a nice lunch, and were driving to go back to the house for Dave to rest and hang out. Driving up 10, we hear jet noise, see low fliers and Dave tells us to drive out on this little penninsula, we do so and end up watching the AF do practice runs for an hour.
That is the last time we got to hang out - a friendship of 30 years, topped off by this!
Miss ya Dave, I am crying now of course.
Helluva show.

rhineauto@reddit
By far the worst I’ve ever seen was at my uncle Gary’s farm and him and his buddies were big into rc planes and one year for the fourth of July they decided to do an rc air show except they’d never done something like that before and they ended up crashing a couple planes into each other and they crashed into the ground pretty close to where some kids were playing and then Gary and his buddy Louis got into a fistfight and one of the kids dads was also drunk and got into a fight with them
It was so stupid
YellowT-5R@reddit

BakedCalifornian@reddit
Run on sentences are smart because if you have a lot of information to give and you want to make sure someone keeps on reading everything you have to say it doesn’t allow for any off-ramps where the reader can decide they want to stop reading and do something else like ride a bike through the Amazon rain forest.

I was lucky enough to be in the jump seat for one of the Thunderbirds' practice runs once. So, I guess, them.
publicram@reddit
Never seen blue angels but the f16 demo is insane.
SRM_Thornfoot@reddit
Usually it is the solo pilot in the F22 that comes on before the precision team that gives the best performance .
Moose135A@reddit
Personally, I prefer the Thunderbirds to the Blue Angels, but the Red Arrows put on the best show I've ever seen.
codee66@reddit
I watch both teams multiple times per year - including both teams together in El Centro for winter training. Honestly people really have the old Thunderbirds stuck in their head. For the last ~5 or so years their show is flown tighter, faster, and lower than the Blues outside the Angels sneak pass. The blue angels get a bit tighter by the end of the year but their show is still far slower. Trust me- watching both teams fly back to back the difference is clear. Plus I love afterburner - and the Thunderbirds having 3 different sneak passes throughout the show is amazing.
WLFGHST@reddit
I'm probably going to get fought for this, but Thunderbirds by A LOT
The maneuvers' they perform imo are much more interesting, and a lot more intrequite.
The Blue Angels do have a sneak pass though (the thunderbirds is VERY hard to be surprised by imo)
Ok_Recording81@reddit
The airforce is more restrictive than the Navy is. The Navy puts on a better show.
osuaviator@reddit
Blue Angels and it isn’t close.
Generallynonspecific@reddit
One of the VHS tapes we had as a kid had the Van Halen “Dreams” music video with the Blue Angels in A-4s. Watched it until the tape wore out. Have always preferred Blue Angels
Ziegler517@reddit
My old man was a Blue in 88 and 89. So I'm bias. In the unbiased opinion, the Blue Angel show is better. They are a slower, the planes are bigger, and fly closer together (because of the aforementioned reasons).
All that said, my dad, a former Blue, always said the Thunderturds (lol) could and should have a better show. He often speaks about how AF Brass nerfs the show. They and the aircraft could do so much more, but can't/won't/don't.
Qpac18@reddit (OP)
88 and 89, just as they started flying the hornets
Ziegler517@reddit
That's actually how he was invited to rush the team. He was an instructor at the rag and was one of the instructors that helped them transition.
woodbanger04@reddit
As a proud former Airman in the US Air Force. My personal opinion goes to the Blue Angels. Those squid’s can fly.
Sweatycamel@reddit
Whatever one comes to my local airshow. It’s not often that either team makes an appearance
Last time was the T-Birds
HelloKamesan@reddit
I think the Blue Angels are about precise and graceful aerobatics, while the Thunderbirds are more about sheer power and aerobatic badassery. Their accompanying music tells that story well. I think there's a place for both styles, and I love that we have the best of both worlds.
I like the Blue Angels personally, but they are both really good at what they do.
PavehawkLLC@reddit
Might be biased due to my immense love of the Superhornet and carrier aviation, but Blue Angels. Their surgical low altitude flying never ceases to amaze me.
ScienceMechEng_Lover@reddit
The US Marines need a similar team just so that they can frex the VTOL capabilities of the F-35B and the Harrier jet.
ChevTecGroup@reddit
They have the blue angels.
ScienceMechEng_Lover@reddit
Isn't that the US Navy though?
ChevTecGroup@reddit
The USMC is part of the dept of the Navy. The USMC operates the Blue Angels' support aircraft C-130 "fat albert" that also does flight demos. Also, I believe some of the Blue's pilots come from the USMC as well
Ziegler517@reddit
There is always one USMC pilot in group of 6. Has been tough as they have to go to the rag to learn the super hornet, as they fly the legacy hornet in the USMC fleet still
thegoatisoldngnarly@reddit
The marines are part of the blue angels. It’s a joint squadron. The Fat Albert crew is also all marines.
emf686@reddit
Harriers are being retired later this year and Marines already have solo demos for east/west coast F-35Bs. Plus they already integrate with the Blue Angels with Fat Albert and demo pilots. Slot and opposing solo are both Marine pilots this year.
mondomando@reddit
They only fly the F-35B solo, but they do have a demo team under the Marines. Unfortunately no Harriers either. They do however show off the VTOL capabilities, usually doing a short take off and hover if temperature permits.
Cruel2BEkind12@reddit
When I saw both the thunderbirds and blue angels in one day last month. The thunderbirds blew the blue angels out of the water. The angels must have had an off day, smoke not working, pacing was horrible, not the closest formations because of wind. While the thunderbirds that day were flawless. Perfect formations, solos filling in time while 1-4 prepared for the next pass. It was a good time. A treat to see them both in one show.
Ziegler517@reddit
Still pretty early in the season, but no excuses. We are also hearing reports that the Blues want to cut smoke when they "out of position". Nothing is more of a give away than the smoke off. Most can't tell 2 feet of error, let it ride. As well, in burner there is no smoke, so when they are chasing to catch up or constantly in and out of burner to maintain formation or pace, it looks wonky.
22Planeguy@reddit
Yeah I was going to say, the quality of their performances varies (from great to stunning, but still varies) over the course of the airshow season. In my experience, the thunderbirds are more consistently fantastic, but a top quality blue angels demo is maybe slightly better. The f-18 is just so heavy so the turns aren't quite as impressive imo.
I was surprised to see so many answering blue angels, but I'm USAF, so maybe I'm biased.
Mc_douchebag@reddit
Talking about Luke Days this year? I thought the same. End of year blue angel are next level, as everyone else has said. But this show the thunderbirds definitely outperformed. I’m always nostalgic to the thunderbirds since I grew up watching them in AZ still. Seeing both in the same day was great, regardless of the 110° weather.
chunt75@reddit
Blue Angels more consistently, Thunderbirds seems very dependent on the team members who rotate through.

I don’t have a favorite. I’ve seen both at airshows. To me, it’s an honor and a privilege to see them fly. I envy every one of those pilots.
Radiant-Percentage-8@reddit
It is interesting to me because the Viper Demo is one of the best single aircraft demonstrations I’ve seen. Pure aggression. Somehow 6 of them suck. Their formations seem sloppy, and I just don’t find them as impressive. The BA’s are so much tighter. I think it has to do with the spring loaded flight control system that is impossible on the 16. I think the aircraft is just too jittery.
Imaginary_Ganache_29@reddit
Thunderbirds easily right now. The Blues just haven’t been as good since they went to the Super Hornet to me.
I think the Blues should update their show. The Thunderbirds really worked to make their show flow together and the music works to enhance it. The high bomb burst/reflection pass is incredibly emotional.
But they’re both amazing and it’s a blast to see both. The Snowbirds put on a great show as well. All 3 put on different shows and they’re all amazing pilots and teams. Go support all of them.
EnderLeFrog@reddit
Saw both of them at one airshow at Luke Airforce Base. I liked the Blue Angels more. Mightve been that it was 105 fahrenheit out and the Thunderbirds were the very llast show. No shade no water after waiting like 5 hours.

Snowbirds put on a completely different show. Smaller and slower, they are much more maneuverable and the routines are much more intricate.
Jessie_C_2646@reddit
Exactly. The Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds are all about speed, power and noise. The formation roars past far into the distance where they slowly turn around to roar past again, while the audience watches a large piece of empty sky.
The Snowbirds are able to stay near show centre all the time. They dance in the say rather than tear through it.
GuaranteeUnhappy3342@reddit
My wife and kids saw the Snowbirds do a show at an intersection near Madera California. Said they were great. I got to see them at Pt. Miguel and a few other places. I like the Blues but the Snowbirds are my favorite! Plus I respect doing a show in a straight winged aircraft without an abundance of power.

I finally got to see the Blues again for the first time in like 15 years at Luke a few weeks ago, and the Tbirds flew later that day. What stood out was just how close and crisp the Blues were, how fast and sharp they’d catch up and rejoin.
