Foxes dig holes like that in my lawn. I've sometimes caught them red-handed (red-pawed). I think they're looking for grubs and get a bit carried away.

A donkey with a pickaxe

And I show you how deep the rabit hole goes
Ok_Corner5873@reddit
If it's a mole, then just bury it alive.
elvisonaZ1@reddit
If there's another one somewhere nearby then it's a rat, they always have another to use as an escape.
siybon@reddit
So is it two holes or one long one?
Mediocre_Scratch_367@reddit (OP)
Just one long hole
ComfortableArt3534@reddit
In other words, a tunnel

Rabbits
snarkmaiden5@reddit
Probably rat. If there's no rabbit dropping in the area unlikely to be rabbits

Agreed!
sunheadeddeity@reddit
How big is it? Difficult to judge. But ratholes in my garden were always about 2 inches across.
Mediocre_Scratch_367@reddit (OP)
Check it out: too big for a rat, maybe? That can has more than 5in of diameter
sunheadeddeity@reddit
Oh that's quite big. I don't know then...could be a fox.
nonoanddefinitelyno@reddit
Big holes are usually badgers in my experience
Jealous-Shallot-3071@reddit
Does your "experience" include never having seen any kind of badger activity ever?
T0urnad0@reddit
Far too clean and small to be a badger. Badger setts will have excavated earth at the opening. They are also often on slopes near the edge of woodlands.
Fun-Concert7086@reddit
Do you honestly think this is a badger hole????????????

Mole or badger.
Fun-Concert7086@reddit
A badger - are you mentally challenged?
idris_elbows@reddit
There's no mash potato around the edge or anything!
oscarx-ray@reddit
Distinctly. Don't they burrow?
Fun-Concert7086@reddit
Oh I am so sorry for your loss relatives
idris_elbows@reddit
Be careful with holes like that. Once there was this girl who got curious, and tried to climb down it. She got stuck in this wonderland of sorts, fucking mental.
Not_Alpha_Centaurian@reddit
I reckon a large owl could do it, but not easily

The things it could be are moles, foxes, badgers, rabbits or rats**. Maybe water voles if you are very close to a river. None of them are anything to worry about for now; even a rat in your garden isn't something to panic about - they are about even if you don't see them.
You might want to get a camera to see what is going on. My friend got one of these https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8765024 which is surprisingly good for the price. Only thing is it's for indoors, and the night vision won't work through glass. But the days are about to get stupidly long, so you will like see some wildlife action in daylight/twilight.
**people more expert than me will correct me in ways like "rabbits would never dig a burrow like that". They are probably right.
Mediocre_Scratch_367@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the recommendation, I'll definetly get a camera!
ProfPMJ-123@reddit
I’ve a few like that left by rabbits.
The dog sits just at the edge of them and uses it as a vending machine.
Mediocre_Scratch_367@reddit (OP)
Seems like it's time for me to adopt a dog then
ArmouredFlump@reddit
Bit hard to say without scale, but I would guess rabbit. Badger holes tend to be wider and rabbit holes taller. I'd also expect to see signs of scraping out as badgers are fastidious at clearing old bedding.
If it was fox it would smell 'musky' and you'd probably find scat in predominant places as they use it to mark territory.
The only other option is rat. If there's one rat hole you'll find more.
ArmouredFlump@reddit
Just to add if it is rat, keep the grass cut short. Makes them visible to predators.
Mediocre_Scratch_367@reddit (OP)
Thank you! Will take care of the grass next weekend, not that the weather is cooperating
GrabbedByTheGhost@reddit
Rabbits.
Some will say badgers. But they are a mythical beast - I have never seen one so I don't believe in them.
siybon@reddit
Orca. Definitely orca.
Mediocre_Scratch_367@reddit (OP)
Added a can (\~13cm / \~5.2 in diameter) for scale

Too big for a rat. Hard to see clearly but it looks like rabbit droppings just inside.
