The men who wore skants in season 1 might now be an important legal precedent for your right to wear them in Ohio?

Ohio's new anti-drag law could arguably require fan conventions, etc., to be licensed as a cabaret?
Per the Ohio Capitol Journal:
The bill would prohibit an adult cabaret performance from taking place outside an adult cabaret.
It also broadens the definition of adult cabaret performances to include “performers or entertainers who exhibit a gender identity that is different from the performer’s or entertainer’s gender assigned at birth using clothing, makeup, prosthetic or imitation genitals or breasts, or other physical markers.”
The bill lumps drag performers in with topless dancers, go-go dancers, strippers, and exotic dancers.
It has a specific carve-out to say that it wouldn’t “prohibit or restrict a bona fide film, theatrical, or other artistic endeavor or performance that is not obscene or harmful to juveniles.”
Also, thanks to Riker for giving me the right to wear sparkly harem jammies without such a license?

Ohio is also where the recent Afroman trial occurred. The judge was clearly biased against Afroman expressing his free speech rights because it offended the feelings of the cops who raided his house without cause. The judge reportedly questioned the jurors on how they came to the “wrong” verdict. That state clearly has issues with personal freedoms.
ZappBranigan79@reddit
Yeah Ohio has turned into quite the 💩hole. Hopefully we can fix it and get enough Democrats in state legislation to fix the gerrymandered maps.
nebelmorineko@reddit
Every now and then I encounter someone encouraging young people to move to Ohio because of the cheap cost of living. They'll point out all the cool stuff in major cities, the nature and all the advantages and the thing is...there are a lot of good things in Ohio? As in physical things. The problem is who is in charge of Ohio. That is what is keeping it undesirable. Bad government can destroy any advantage an area has, while conversely good government can take an area with little in the way of natural advantages and make it at least tolerable.
Darmok47@reddit
A friend of mine is from Akron and went to Harvard Law, so could have done very well in SF or DC or NY. But he ended up coming back to Akron and ran for City Council and is now Mayor. So there's some people who are doing what they can.
nebelmorineko@reddit
I'm not going to knock people who try. And the affordability isn't anything to sneeze at.
Honestly, a lot of the housing issues we have is not that we don't have houses (everywhere in the United States) but rather that the houses aren't near the jobs. That's what is hard for people to understand. When you see a 'desirable' place with high vacancy rates, it's usually summer or winter vacation homes, because there's not another economy there to support full time residents.
We've been trying to bring the houses to the jobs (with little success) but if we could bring the jobs to the low income/high vacancy housing areas that would also help, the problem is that we can't just decree that to happen. But making places into places that high income earners will want to live will attract more jobs. Companies have learned that they can't dump in-demand employees into cheaper places and have them be happy without giving them the amenities and social atmosphere they want.

Any benefit you could get from moving to Ohio you could get from Michigan, and at least Michigan is TRYING to do good things.
BeckyW77@reddit
I live just 20 miles south of the Michigan state line in Ohio. I like that Michigan is trying, but I'm old and don't want MORE winter. (If I could handle winter, Michigan and Minnesota would be choices for moving to.)
Seriously, though, the Repubs are in charge and the Ohio Democratic Party keeps putting up candidates who flop. Strickland ran for the Senate like he would win, so didn't need to try hard.

They’re exaggerating a bit. That judge was an asshole and I agree clearly biased but he didn’t call it the “wrong” verdict. He was visibly displeased at the verdict and did grill the jury on what they “got hung up on” though.

dont_thr0w_me_away_@reddit
the tartan pattern has no relation to where you're from, who you're related to, or anything else. Specific tartans were invented as basically tourist fodder by the Victorians, and they gave clan names to the patterns. In reality, anyone could wear any pattern, and they were often (not always) woven to reflect the colours of the locality. In Scotland today, people wear whatever tartan suits their fancy. *SOME* tartans are copyrighted by the organisation that commissions their design, but most tartans (the ones with clan names) you can wear whatever you like.

Yup, and that shit should be tangled up in the courts until they overturn it.
The only reasonable actions we have left is to abuse the laws they enacted to hopefully force an overturning of these pathetic violations of our God given rights. (God in this context is the same natural God of the Constitution and not the Christian or any sects opinions).
FaeTheWanderer@reddit
Well, as a trans woman in Ohio who's cute blouses and bras are about to be illegal to wear. I guess I'll just have to go around topless! I mean, even though my transition began over a decade ago and I have fully formed female breasts, it would be illegal for me to use a covering like a bra, or a camisole. However, since they insist I am a man, my bare chest is absolutely legal and completely appropriate in public!
That is what the law says!
Peripateticdreamer84@reddit
The states next door are more decent. Pennsylvania has some friendly areas in Pittsburgh and Philly.
Also, on a practical note, wear sunscreen while maliciously complying with stupid laws. You don’t want to know what sunburned nipples feel like.
Significant_Quit_674@reddit
Meanwhile I as a cis woman who is working in a blue collar job would likely also have issues because most PPE is "mens size fits all".
This is so ridiculous
Significant_Donut967@reddit
I'm sorry for the shit you're going through. A couple of my friends from the army transitioned and they've left the state too.
I'm here shouting with yall though. You're my fellow Americans and have as much right to be as any of us.
As Guthrie said "this land was made for you and me".
FaeTheWanderer@reddit
Thank you. I'm trying desperately to figure out how to get myself and my disabled trans wife out of here so we can live in peace!
Neither of us asked for any of this. We just want to live quiet lives and maybe open an animal rescue and rehabilitation center given our shared skill set.
I grew up on a farm, and my parents ran Warren County Wildlife Rescue back in the 90's so I grew up aying nurse to sick and injured animals. And Lupa, my wife, went to school to become a vet and worked as a horse trainer and rehabilitation expert before her degenerative spinal condition forced her to quit.
She even has videos of her walking a horse through a giant circular pool thing for physical therapy! Its kinda cool to watch!
But yeah, we are just normal women! We dont go around screaming about our pronouns or trying to convert folks (that would be horrible and give cis folks the kinds of dysphoria that we worked so hard to escape from!). This culture war crap has been so destructive to our lives, and the worst part is that there was nothing we could have done, other than continue living with crippling depression and self hatred!
Significant_Donut967@reddit
Yeah, my friends are also both disabled veterans with myself.
That's all they wanted to, was to just live a nice quiet life outside of overland. It's not fair to yall. You're not criminals, you're not hurting people, you're just trying to live your life and not feel like shit in your own body.
I'm a proponent of gun ownership, and if you're comfortable and knowledgeable about them, I suggest looking into a simple shotgun or small rifle.
Be safe out there you two, you're valid and you're wanted in this world. Don't give up.
FaeTheWanderer@reddit
Thanks! I dont keep guns around as before my transition i had a history of suicide attempts. My parents sent me to a gay conversion "summer camp" and my mental health spiraled horribly from the experience.
I dont know what all you have heard about conversion therapy, but as a survivor, I can tell you that it is pure torture, and I was maybe 10 when it happened!

rianbrolly@reddit
What an odd response. Your circular logic spells massive identity issues and controlling behaviors. Listen young one, culture aids in programming idenity. Identity is shaped by culture. Completely detached cultures through out all of human history crafted their own gender concepts which interestingly enough all had a lot in common. The nature of the general perception of gender through the whole world and all cultures happened naturally. Even your arguments and disagreements are part of the nature of humanity and its growing and evolving change… but in general, using a TNG sub to draw a context between the natural growth and evolution of our people and what happened in TNG is a sandbox conversation at best and irrelevant. Have more respect for your own causes and only base things in reality without drawing logic or resources from a fantasy reality.
What is completely odd behavior, screams identity issues is when people pretend or argue that behaviors and esthetics and cosmetic applications do not have a pattern within genders and genders tied to sex. It’s such an odd form of self righteous denial. But anyways you can talk to your therapist about all this and go be angry or struggle in life whatever lol.

The Ohio law is against adult cabaret style performances done in public.
It’s not against men wearing clothes associated with women. Most people who wear clothes in this manner, such as the crew member in the slant, are able to do so without doing an exaggerated sexualized performance.

Tough_Friendship9469@reddit
It makes it freely enforced under random opinions of those enforcing. Arrests and convictions can be made based on vague views and the manipulations of people driven by hate.
Sturville@reddit
Exactly, just like Florida Rep. Kat Kammack who said that terminating her ectopic pregnancy "wasn't an abortion", even though the six week ban on the books in Florida didn't define an "abortion" and the medical parlance considered the drug she was given to terminate the pregnancy as an "abortion".
Tough_Friendship9469@reddit

If they don't define "abortion" or what clothing "exhibit[s] a gender identity that is different from the performer’s" then they get to decide that politicians with an [R] next to their name, or their donors, etc... can have all the "not abortions" they want and wear whatever they want; while people they don't like (or people who aid them) can be at threat of prosecution under the vaguely defined laws.

theadamabrams@reddit
I don’t personally understand the appeal of drag, as a performer or viewer, but my understanding is that the intent is extremely different.
Blackface, for example in minstrel shows, was done to mock and belittle actual black people. Drag, on the other hand, is mocking the rigid gender norms of society, not mocking people. It can also be expressing an esthetic that the performer genuinely feels comfortable in.

Doc_Blox@reddit
Right, and if that weren't specified within the "text" (shown in an episode) that wouldn't be canon, and so it could be argued that men hadn't historically worn them, so claims to their being unisex would be tenuous by comparison. Since precedent has been established here, that weakens any potential challenge to their acceptability as a garment for males, considering the new law.
