What’s the last “retro” game you last played on its original console?

Mine was Mario Kart 64 ON the N64
TCGHexenwahn@reddit
Playing Earthbound at the moment.

Heroes of Might and Magic III - on PC, which is technically the original 'console.' For everything SNES (eg Chrono Trigger), I just emulate it.
ChefGreyBeard@reddit
I have a snes and nes in boxes where they are safe. I play their games on an emulator my son bought a few years ago

StarFox on SNES

Fantasy Zone 2 for the Sega Master System
I also attempted to play Daytona USA on the Sega Saturn but none of the polygons load anymore.
Zesty-B230F@reddit
"14% of Americans..." is a weird way to categorize this. The headline should be from the perspective of Reteo Gaming as a hobby or interest. Should just say something like:"45 million Americans have interest in Retro Gaming"
Electronic-Plan2736@reddit
Jurassic Park on my Nomad
GarciaWolf@reddit
I still play Ultima Online it’s PC but from 96-97
MaToMaStEr@reddit
I guess it would depend on what you consider "retro". I still play on the original consoles I own so I would say Chrono Cross for the PSX (started playing it again last month). What a game ...
Capt_Rons_Lost_Eye@reddit
Probably wwf wrestlemania 2000 or wcw/nwo revenge for the n64 last year.
B_Williams_4010@reddit
I still fire up the SNES for Donkey Kong Country once in a while.
IndistinctMuttering@reddit
Yes! And SuperMario Bros and Bubsy
B_Williams_4010@reddit
Oh, yeah; haven't played Bubsy in forever.

I spent Saturday afternoon playing Super Mario Bros 3 on an original NES.
bascule@reddit
SMB3 was literally the only game I could get to work on my vintage NES when I decided to bust it out after the recent 40th anniversary, and believe me it wasn’t for lack of trying to meticulously scrub the contacts (on both sides) clean with specially made cleaning pads and alcohol.
Still beat it though! Though took the Switch and save states to beat it with Sledgehammer Mario.
LouisTheGreatDane22@reddit
You gotta blow into the cartridge.

jjmawaken@reddit
Pretty sure my sister still has our SNES we grew up with (her husband bought it while he was her boyfriend).
Traditional_Entry183@reddit
The oldest console I've played a game on in the last ten years would be the PS3. In the last fifteen years, the Gamecube.
Growing up, as soon as a console got obsoleted, I was done with it. Atari to NES, NES to SNES, SNES to Playstation, PS1 to PS2, and PS2 to PS3, never looked back.
Holiday-Eggplant230@reddit
Currently playing Chrono Trigger on the SNES

Earthbound, Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire 2.

6. Rage quit when the game sucks
My kids were gifted a PS5 and both me and them are completely infuriated by the poor experience. They never want to play it because everything takes so damn long and is so fucking complicated.

Megaman 2, NES!

Streets of Rage 2.
The tower of power is connected to my office television; though it now has some wireless controllers and an upscaler.
Typically my retrogaming is done with rereleases, through the Steamdeck.
GarblingCumfarts@reddit
I'm generally a handheld guy these days with the Retroid. However, the NES/SNES/Genesis Mini's have been my go-to when I want to play on a television. All my systems are now boxed up as collecting for them is no longer fun.
green_tory@reddit
I have a bunch of systems in storage; I should just sell them to a retro game store, they're doing no one any good just sitting in boxes.
GarblingCumfarts@reddit
Yea I definitely can't sell mine, as they were my systems growing up and games I got from birthdays and Christmas.
I'll never forget when I was 20 and would buy up all the Saturn games for $5 a piece and the guy said "Why do you want all this junk?" and now they're worth hundreds. I still can't part with anything, as it was a part of my life.
TraditionalTackle1@reddit
I wanted a Sega Saturn so bad just to play Panzer Dragoon, its one of the only systems I didnt have.
GarblingCumfarts@reddit
Panzer Dragoon was the sole reason I bought it. I don't think I got mine till '99 as I was a PC gamer, but by that time everything was so cheap I basically got most of the whole library.
Lucky_Louch@reddit
Squish em Sam on my original ColecoVision. Had it since the early 80's and it still works just had to get an updated RF adapter to play on modern TV.
Then_Increase7445@reddit
I played MLB Featuring Ken Griffey Jr. on my original 64 today. Going to do it again later tonight.

SanchoPliskin@reddit
The SNES is hooked up in the bedroom. It gets used frequently. It was also the last new console I had until PS3. Which I have hooked up in another room. Hooked up to a CRT tv for playing ps1 and ps2 titles on. The snes was also hooked up in there but my wife was sick and wanted to play Donkey Kong Country in bed. It like I said I got out of the console market for several years and was a purely PC gamer. And I still play a bunch of games from the 90s on that too!!
SilverAsparagus2985@reddit
The last one was Spyro the Dragon on the original PS. The most played was Megaman X on SNES.

jmac11281@reddit
I don't think you can go wrong with any of the NHL Hockey games from the original '92 version all the way to '97.
Quiltface@reddit
I was always a "96 is better" guy So i replayed all of them for snes at least (nhlpa 93 - 98) I came to the conclusion personally that 98 was the best one.
Also in mallrats they played "nhl all star hockey"
No-Dig-4408@reddit
'94 gets most of the love because it was the pioneer, but yeah, 95\~97 had full some gameplay refinements that felt better and the improved Season mode that made me like those much more. I'm with ya on that.

Broke out the SNES at my sister's for Thanksgiving and played some Donkey Kong Country with nieces and nephews.
It was pretty funny because they were struggling to beat levels without dying multiple times and I was just flying through them off muscle memory. Felt good to know I still got it when it comes to the old school platformers.

My son turned 8 a couple weeks back and he wanted to have his first sleepover, so we pulled out all of my old consoles. He and his friends played NES/SNES/N64/Gamecube all night. It was great!
Since they were all set up, I had to play some Super Mario World
Epicardiectomist@reddit
my OG SNES is currently hooked up to my TV. I've been going through and beating all the Super Mario All Stars games.
Let's be real folks, Super Mario 2 just isn't good. It probably would have been fun as Doki Doki Panic, but our nostalgia for it is definitely through fireplant-colored glasses. 1, 3, World, Lost Levels, even Land for Gameboy are all awesome in their own unique-but-familiar way, but 2 doesn't hold up the way I wanted it to.
spicybisonwings@reddit
A few weeks ago I bought Super Empire Strikes Back and Super Return of the Jedi for my SNES. What’s great is I never played them as a kid, so they are new to m. I am really enjoying all the trial and error, compared to games where muscle memory does all the work.

Still have the same one in 20" I bought new in 2002 for my first year of college. That beast has survived college, multiple moves, a decade+ of sitting unused at my dad's, and being dropped but still works as good as new. Currently has a PS1, Dreamcast, N64, and GameCube piped into the S video and a PS2 with a hard drive on the component input. Sound goes through a Sony LBT-ZX9 I also bought new when I finally finished college circa 2007. The tape decks on the stereo have been surprisingly handy to have.

I used to work in retail in the late '90s-early '00s, when I was in college. It was around the time when the Sony Trinitrol line was huge. I always wanted one, but the TV weighed about 60 pounds more than I did and I had an upstairs apartment.
Beautiful sets with the best picture I'd ever seen, but good God they were heavy.

Still feel like SNES was peak video game. Plenty of buttons but still simple and some solid graphics. I remember I stopped playing Metroid on game cube because you had switch between so many masks and weapons and items and it was exhausting- like just let me play!
Ta_mere6969@reddit
Not original console (I've never owned my own console, not really into games).
My kid has a Switch. He's on the retro games all.the.time. He likes NES Baseball and one of the football games.
At a school event the other night, he and another kid were passing back and forth this little hand-held brushed-gold Nintendo device, playing Mario! The screen was incredibly bright and clear, I'm 99% certain it's a newer device with an OLED screen.
ExpressReveal2480@reddit
I don't even know what the last vintage game I played was but I'm totally on board with the whole whining about modern games thing.
Games were way better before online accounts, advertising, rent to play/monthly fees, constant massive load times, having to update the game the first time you put the disc in, downloading gigabytes of data, waiting for patches to arrive to fix broken games, etc..
NES/SNES/PS1/PS2/Sega all just worked and were honest fun. Realistically NES was the one I had the most fun on as a kid just cause we had it at the right age.
DarwinGoneWild@reddit
Gunnm Martian Memory on PS1.

I don’t own the original consoles anymore, but I regularly play classic games via Nintendo Switch Online. I even got the controllers for the SNES, N64, and GameCube. Graphics and live interactive multiplayer have clearly changed gaming, but while the beauty of the games and ability to connect with more people are great, there is just something about the raw 8-16-32-64 bit games that makes the classics hold up. No matter the advances, gameplay has always predominated.
IMO, Goldeneye and Doom are where video games of the past are where the genetic mutation happened allowing gaming to expand in the future.
But, if they ever remake Paperboy (if they have not already) it will not even compare to the original. May be better spinning on it off into a movie.

On original hardware, SMW2: Yoshi's Island.

How can you tell? My ps2 isnt hooking up to the internet. Im not logging that time.
sober_disposition@reddit
Why is everyone referring to the Sega Genesis?
The PlayStation was released in 1994.
SlinkDogg@reddit
Because the genesis does what the PlayStation don’t
bcentsale@reddit
No, I believe it did what Nintendidn't.
TheDukeofArgyll@reddit
We played a lot of snes in high school well after the 64 and game cube came out. I had memories of playing a broken Super Mario World cartridges that was missing the top half. Still worked, still fun.
bcentsale@reddit
Ratchet and Clank on my hard drive modded PS2. I also still have a Genesis in my basement.
productofyourinviro@reddit
My buddy has me playing Zelda ocarina of time on the N64 because he was obsessed with it when he was young, and I said I never played it because it's for nerds. And some 4 player golden eye with the boys.
Admirable-Pie3869@reddit
I just played Quake for an hour yesterday.
slappy_mcslapenstein@reddit
I recently got wireless controllers for my N64. My wife and I have Mario Kart nights sometimes.
midnight-dour@reddit
The last game I played on an OG NES I believe was Batman.
guyako@reddit
I’ve been playing on emulation long enough that I don’t remember what I last played on an actual console. But statistically, it was probably Streets Of Rage 2 on Genesis…
Playongo@reddit
Chip-chan Kick! on PC-FX.
RoyalPuzzleheaded259@reddit
I played NHL ‘96 on my Sega Genesis last night with my son.
CubeEarthShill@reddit
John Madden Football aka Madden ‘90 on SNES. I still emulate games and have a couple of retro consoles with preloaded games, but that’s probably the last one I played on OG hardware.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
Probably Sonic 3 and Knuckles
ProblemLongjumping12@reddit
Lemmings on my SNES.
Sad_Training_1595@reddit
In my room it's still somewhere around 1992.
Lothonian_Jester@reddit
I think it was super Mario Bros 3 on the NES... Found one that had only been used like twice and put back into its original box and left in a well protected part of a family member's garage like 8 years ago... Then I moved three times and have no idea where it is.
GreenHairyMartian@reddit
I've recently got myself a retro handheld. I just was playing some SNES Super Mario 3.
The retro handheld and emulation world has changed a LOT on the past few years.its pretty awesome what the devices can do
The retro handheld I have is android based and can emulate any game from Atari 2600 up to, and including ps2, including Wii, wii-u, and most switch games. It can also play a lot of steam games, and it can also stream games from my Xbox series x, and my PC. It's a magical device for $250 (retroid pocket 6)

I got one of these things last fall, a Retroid Pocket Mini with this weird ass square screen. I've really put some miles on it. It was part of my plan to ditch my smart phone, it's more fun than doom scrolling.
NedStark1979@reddit
Yep. I have a Nintendo, Super Nintendo, GameBoy, GameBoy Advance, DS and a whole slew of games. As well as a R36S handheld emulator preloaded with 20,000+ games from the 70’s - late 90’s. Never moved on to the modern consoles.
MysticKei@reddit
I have Mario 3 and Zelda on Gameboy Advanced 😅
newhappyrainbow@reddit
I still have my PS2, and occasionally pull it out. I long since got ride of my older consoles. I still play my favorite 90’s games on my PC though.
FourIngredients@reddit
Tetris on NES.
shempaholic@reddit
Rampage on my original Sega Master System a few weeks ago. My first game console and it still works great.
EducatorEducational7@reddit
Last one I played was WCW/nWo Revenge.. but it was sometimes in the 2000s.
VecchioDiM3rd1955@reddit
Never had a console. I have a beige Commodore 64 in somewhat working order, a Commodore 64 Ultimate and a ZX Spectrum Next.
Soo... The way of the exploding fist, I think it's the last one i played, but it could have been Atic Atac or Gyruss...
Substantial-Round188@reddit
Uniracers and D-Force on SNES 3 weeks ago.
lakebistcho@reddit
I played GoldenEye today. Gonna make it an Easter tradition.
SlinkDogg@reddit
Playing through Breath of Fire 2 currently!
AtaraxiaGwen@reddit
Friend had an Atari 2600 and I played Pac-man until I broke the joystick. We’re not friends any more, and they will never beat my high score.
SlinkDogg@reddit
Yes sir
Sempophai@reddit
Depending how far back we're talking, maybe Altered Beast on Sega Megadrive. Pretty sure I still have the console and cartridge.
FaceRockerMD@reddit
I'll give a strange one. I was talking to my buddy about how it's virtually impossible to beat most sega CD FMV games because you have to know the perfect inputs to beat them so we looked up the timings of the traps on night trap, loaded up the sega CD and beat it.
bygtopp@reddit
We play the retro because we are tired of system updates then a game update and each one takes a few hours. And we don’t have that kind of time. Plug and play. And then after the updates the subscription service to play with friends jumps on board.
jRok57@reddit
I fire up the old NES at least once every three months. Contra was the most recent playthrough. Dragon warrior before that
Unanimous_D@reddit
Does MAGFest count?
Obvious_Argument4188@reddit
Currently playing Pokémon Leaf Green on GBA console.
Have the upgraded screen, though. My eyes can’t handle the non-upgraded screen anymore. 😞
GCU_Sleeper_Service@reddit
I recently found my childhood Gameboy and started a new Pokemon Silver save.

8 Eyes a great NES game.

Mario Kart 64

I was playing ncaa 06 "race for the heisman" 2 or 3 years ago when my ps2 finally kicked the bucket. It was in a traveling box of nostalgia and dust for quite some time. Sad day tho.
-threefeetoffun@reddit
Played Shadows of the Empire on my N64 about 2 years ago.
