1989 was such a great year for music

I was watching a video on YouTube about Paul's Boutique by Beastie Boys and I thought of all the awesome albums that came out that year. Aside from Paul's Boutique there's Pretty Hate Machine by Nine Inch Nails, Bleach by Nirvana, The Real Thing by Faith No More, Louder Than Love by Soundgarden, 3 Feet High and Rising by De La Soul, Disintegration by The Cure, Doolittle by the Pixies, Stone Roses self titled, and Technique by New Order.

Had to scroll this far to get a hip hop grooo other than beastie boys😂
MrNinoBrown1906@reddit
Most of the people in this sub either were not exposed to any hip hop with Black people pl e or they try to pretend I didnt exist.
DreadedFistNW@reddit
Interesting tidbit about Paul's Boutique.
Was estimated I dunno like a decade ago that if it was even possible to clear them all, the cost of licensing the samples on that album would exceed 25 million.
It was made before the Vanilla Ice/Queen lawsuit. A lot of people think Golden Age of hip hop just means late 80s/early 90s stuff. What it really means is hip hop made before samples were only available to those who could pay $$ for them.
medisamurai@reddit
Realistically you could say that about every year of the 70s80s90s for me.
89 was very good to a young hip hop fan though.

Paul’s Boutique was a masterwork. Loved it at the time & was baffled it wasn’t huge.
BMisterGenX@reddit
I could understand why it wasn't huge. The world wasn't ready
BMisterGenX@reddit
I almost feel like musically 1989 and 1990 were like one long year. Stuff was getting weirder, alternative was more accepted REM was no longer just for college radio but it wasn't grunge yet.
x86_64_@reddit
1989 was pretty good but I don't think any year comes close to 1987:
U2, Whitney, Guns N Roses, Whitesnake, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Pink Floyd, George Michael, Prince, Aerosmith, Metallica's first EP with Jason, Michael Jackson's Bad... It was an insane year in music
Jellybeans74@reddit
REM’s Green album also (late 1988 release)

1989 the number another summer (get down).
While Public Enemy didn't release an album in 1989 they did release a powerful single called Fight the Power for Spike Lee's movie Do the Right Thing.
effugium1@reddit
I thought about listing that but didn’t since as you said the album didn’t come out until 1990. Of course the version from do the right thing is slightly different.
correct_eye_is@reddit
Yea I just mentioned it because as soon as I saw 1989 those lyrics popped in my head.
effugium1@reddit
Mine too when I saw the post.

Dinosaur Jr "Bug" was a game changer for me.........was like heavy metal crossed with the melodic sense of neil young and the cure......

1989 was a really great year especially for industrial music. Within a month period we had
Pretty Hate Machine by NIN The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste by Ministry Rabies by Skinny Puppy
Arguably some of the most influential albums of their era.
rtduvall@reddit
It was the beginning of the end. 88 had a different vibe, though we didn’t call it that back then. Brittany Spears popped on the scene and changed music forever. The end of perennial great music. (Sounds weird when I say that out loud. Hope you understand what I’m trying to say. )

Counterpoint: 1989 was one of the worst years for music.
HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
Accept my upvote. It was the start of my "Fuddy Duddy Old Lady" period.
noscrubphilsfans@reddit
I mean, Milli Vanilli alone puts that year in the bottom half of the decade. Add in Fine Young Cannibals 🤮 and all that hair metal desperately clinging to relevance and it's not hard to see why 1989 is tied with 1981 for the worst year for music in the '80s.
HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
LOL. Fine Young Cannibals. Oh hell no. I never, ever liked them. BOO HISS to them!
effugium1@reddit
Agreed. Some of my faves:

Louder Than Love and The Real Thing were huge for me. I was 14 at the time. Appetite really got me into rock and away from pop music, but those two albums really set up my lifelong musical taste. Along with And Justice for All and South of Heaven, which came both out in the 2nd half of 88.
NoYOUGrowUp@reddit
I worked at Sam Goody from 1988 to 1993. Thank god for the employee discount.
Ignignokt73@reddit
For those of us that “partook” in butt rock/hair metal/cheese metal, there was a large sum of that too (almost too much some would say):
Motley Crüe - Dr. Feelgood, Skid Row - S/T, Warrant - Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich, Testament- Practice What You Preach, Tesla - The Great Radio Controversy, Aerosmith - P.U.M.P, Faster Pussycat - Wake Me When It’s Over, Savatage - Gutter Ballet, Blue Murder - S/T, Enuff Z’Nuff - S/T, Great White - Twice Shy.
squid-hands@reddit
I revisited the Blue Murder album recently and it still holds up REALLY well. Especially Valley of the Kings and Ptolemy. Rest In Power John Sykes
Downtown_Map_2482@reddit
Almost too much?
battlesong1972@reddit
You’re speaking my language. I was 17 in 89 and wasn’t listening (and still don’t listen) to almost anything in OP’s post
BearPorto@reddit
It was good, but it wasn't 1984 good:
Maniac - MIchael Sambello All Night Long - Lionel Richie Every Breath You Take - Police What A Feeling - Irene Carra
And to top it all, THRILLER - MJ

I guess the question is how poppy you like your music.
dogfaced_baby@reddit
That was 1983.
sigurrosco@reddit
1989 beats that easily.

You and I have very similar music tastes because I love every album you mentioned. Others from that year that I love are Fugazi - 13 Songs, No Control - Bad Religion, The The - Mind Bomb, Spacemen 3 - Playing With Fire, Ministry - The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste.

This was a time when record labels signed artists to be artists. It was about making an album, not a single so much. It produced some incredible music, but also produced lots of duds which forced record companies to scale back production on artist led albums. If you think about it, iconic bands like Fishbone wouldn’t be able to make albums with the backing of their company in today’s music industry. Paul’s was a revolutionary album, but they would have probably been dumped today because it didn’t replicate the success of License. Something like Grand Royal doesn’t happen anymore unless the artist finances it themselves.

‘87 -> ‘98 are my golden years. In ‘87 my older sister gave me some cassettes for Christmas, and it was my first real experience in figuring out what I liked and didn’t like. Then I discovered The Stone Roses, which led to an insane obsession with BritPop in the early nineties until that faded out. To this day, I still go back to all my favourite BritPop bands. The early 90s were such a great time to be coming of age in the UK.

Nobody's mentioned Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever.

Can we agree to disagree? I feel more mid 80's. 84/85. I switched to country music about 89
Five_String_Serenade@reddit
Tears for Fears “The Seeds of Love” was massive that year. The year before, came Edie; and the year after, The Black Crowes blew our doors away. SO good.
hydrocrust@reddit
And holy smokes, Freedom by Neil Young and Rock N Roll by the Mekons. Heck of a year.
51line_baccer@reddit
Best album of 89 was still Metallica Justice that came out in 88.
FrowningMonotone@reddit
Unfortunately, all of this great music was negated by New Kids On The Block.

So many good albums that year! I loved Paul's Boutique right away and had many friends who were disappointed, thinking it was going to be Liscened to Ill 2.0 but years later they supposedly all "loved it right away". I always dug the red cassette tape too

Black Candy - Beat Happening

Me and Mr. Ray - Miracle Legion

Yep. All of those are good albums. Also Nothing's Shocking (late 1988), Mudhoney EP, RHCP Mother's Milk, Ministry The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste, The Cult Sonic Temple, Nitzer Ebb Belief, and Xymox Twist of Shadows.
I still listen to all of these to this day.
