I cook at a nursing home and I PROMISE none of my food looks like this. That sucks
AverageInfamous7050@reddit
That ticket is a complete lie.
ohnodamo@reddit
"Grilled Ham & Cheese?" That bread was nowhere near heat. I'd believe "thawed" but not grilled.
Drikkink@reddit
Seriously. There's no tater tots instead they get a pitiful scoop of (clearly instant) mashed potatoes. If the bread on that sandwich didn't come already baked in the bag, I'm not sure they would've even baked the dough with how ungrilled that "grilled ham and cheese" is. Didn't even bother with a garbage substitute for the coleslaw. I'll assume the milk and tea are there and then there's a single lone cookie in a plastic baggie.
I know not every place is staffed by people who care about food but GENERALLY you'll have people in a kitchen that want to make the best food they are capable of. Even if the people running the place were buying the shittiest Sysco garbage out of the back of some dude's car, I'd be doing everything I can to at least TRY to give the people who I'm feeding something semi-edible.
iheartgeekz@reddit
It could be that the resident has to have their food textures modified due to difficulty swallowing or lack of teeth. Not saying it's not a lie, but working with the elderly often involves substitutes for textures that can be disappointing.
AverageInfamous7050@reddit
The ticket does not reflect anything that suggests that. The plate is despicable.

I work at a nursing home. Last week, all our cooks quit on the spot. WE had to make the food. I'm talking, all the available nurses we had, hr, laundry, housekeeping, AND social services. All of us had to go in the kitchen we've never worked in before and make food. Pretty sure we violated like 500 laws. But we called corporate and they were literally like "figure it out" so either we let 80 old people starve or we make SOMETHING. I got nervous that this post was about our facility 💀💀
Cheeky_Puffs@reddit
Very thankful none of my grandparents had to go to nursing homes and the one still alive will never go to one either. This is disrespectful and sad.

Run by the mob? I worked at a place in indiana like this that was funded by the Chicago mob. They were so obvious when they came to view what their money was being spent on in the mental health industry, with several more hospitals opening nationwide that they were also finding. It was a shithole full of abuse, neglect, and deaths that were caused by medical mistakes and resulted in several lawsuits and families being paid under the table while the county prosecutor was also being paid off to turn the other cheek. Sickening
m3t4lf0x@reddit
Can you share the name of the place? I feel like this needs more way more attention
GIJne69@reddit
The Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Indianapolis. They have several across states in told now. One of the owners was an MD, the other a non-practicing clinical psychologist who left his wife to marry a nurses aide they're that he was sleeping with. She was also a stripper. Well, he married her and made her the CEO and her other nurses aide friend/ stripper the marketing me Mgr or something like that. He soon discovered his new wife was cheating with the Maintenance man and died him. The guy filed an NAACP complaint and they paid him off - just like they paid off one of my patient's family members after she died when a nurse mistakenly administers insulin to her. 😠 They're were SAs of the geriatric population, nurses abusing patient's, you name it and I complained endlessly to no avail. Also no security until several staff were seriously attacked.
m3t4lf0x@reddit
Whoa, you weren’t kidding… this place is insane and I can’t believe there is such an extensive pedigree of transgressions without anything resembling justice.
I think mental institutions are particularly ripe for the type of fraud detailed in the article, especially when your victims have literally no recourse even if they had to the resources to do so. Truly despicable.
GIJne69@reddit
Oh, and this isn't the particular one that I was referring to, but they ended up owning this place as well. They shut their doors at the location you referred to. It used to be Valle Vista in Greenwood, IN. The one in referring to was in Indpls, but there are several. I also know they were opening several out-of-state. Nothing but illegal and unethical business practices! Forget about nursing homes as well, because they would all send their patients to these places if they deemed their patients unruly, if they refused meds, or if they needed their medication adjusted. In the beginning, what was a regular 72- hour hold ended up laying for several months for patients at these private pay facilities. The Nigerian psychiatrist "worked" at every one of their Indiana facilities to write patient notes, prescribe meds, etc. without ever having seen or met the patients outside of the one location he worked out of. There was no teleheath whatsoever. Can you say illegal?! Patients locked with nothing but their mattress in an emptied out janitor's closet for days without a doctor's orders, and then told that they couldn't tell their group home about what happened, and bribed with toys and new clothes in return to keep quiet.
violetkiwii@reddit
Holy fk. I use to drive by valle often. I had no idea this was a thing
GIJne69@reddit
Exactly this! I tried for so long to stick it out for my patients, but the owners and staff were terrible to them and no changes to improve were being made. It was literally a bigger shit show everyday to put it lightly! I can say so much more about that place. I've worked in mental health for many years and have seen some bad places, but THIS one was literal Hell on earth because of how the patients were treated! I hope everyone that abused or turned a blind eye to it gets their karma
h0ldplay@reddit
A local journalist or newspaper would probably be interested in talking to you, if you reached out. It's no guarantee, but the more upset people you have, the more likely something is to change. Best of luck.

Look at the Economy now. Some boomers had their savings wiped away due to medical debt. My grandma was put in a skilled nursing facility while she recovered from a bad fall. Idc how you feel about generations or politics or money most of those facilities are horrible living conditions and understaffed. People deserve better. You’re gross for this comment.

malowu97@reddit
My dad just passed away after living his last year in a religious not-for-profit nursing home. It’s the same thing. Ice cold food every day. The folks who didn’t go home on Christmas Day got a boxed lunch and a juice box for dinner. We brought him outside food every single day.
Phoenixpizzaiolo21@reddit
I unfortunately have experienced prison food and have had better looking meals than this!
ObscureReferenceFace@reddit
We’ve also had much worse 2 years and 4 months Big House and 8 months of county receiving) But yeah they need to treat these people better. One of my first jobs that didn’t involve farming was working in a kitchen of a nursing home (not a great one but better than most in US). I was ~18 and this was about 1994 in Illinois. Honestly, the food was pretty decent. Some are in very restrictive diets and get meals that look really sad, but there is a reason behind it. A lot of residents don’t eat very much and I’d say more than 33% is in the garbage after. It was a very sad place to work. Honestly the food is the easy thing to get right and when perspective clients come around to pick a place for their parent, if the food is pretty decent it’s a huge selling point. The “children” can’t really assess the nursing care etc but they can see if the place is clean and if the food is pretty good. The devil is in the details though. The nurses were pretty mean sometimes. I didn’t see any if the physical care but I always assumed it was bad based on how the nurses acted
r15km4tr1x@reddit
They also have to eat the food at family dinners when everyone treks to see them
rm79@reddit
75% of nursing homes in the US are for-profit. I spent 6 weeks in a rehab/nursing facility for an injury and the food was pretty close to this. Not as bad, but it was close. Thankfully I was able to have all my meals delivered or brought by family.
The hospital was fantastic though. They really put effort into the food. And the chef and dining coordinators would come by the rooms to ask for feedback and make sure everyone was enjoying their meals.
WinterSector8317@reddit
Honestly, for how much it costs to stay in a hospital per night, they should have Gordon Ramsey serving the food

My Dad was at, what is now "Noble Senior Living" on Mobile Hwy. Then, the director was a flashy dude with a Cadillac with a gold grill(on the Caddy). He was obviously skimming. But everyone was taken care of. He and his staff got caught and they all got replaced.
New staff was cold and uncaring. Everyone smelt off piss and the patrons weren't being cared for. All my Dads belongings came up missing and later he had developed bruises. You couldn't find any staff to talk with them. That place turned into a shithole.
They should've let that original director keep his hustle. Everyone was happy. And the food did not look like this.

I honestly never did either until I worked for the company previously mentioned. They took every opportunity to take advantage of this population, simply because I believe it was easy for them to do. Unfortunately, we live in a society where mental health concerns are still very much taboo or largely improperly treated. Indiana is also one of the states that lacks adequate mental health funding and resources, so altogether, this population is often disregarded. Some believe is better to place them in these facilities, as they're out if sight and it if mind. Afterall, they're receiving what many believe is helpful treatment, but it's money over first - especially in private pay facilities like this. People get desperate for help when they have no one and very little resources. This place was so bad I quit seeing patients in Indiana altogether when nothing was done to reprimand these facilities after continuous reporting.

I worked at a “luxury” for-profit retirement home for a few years right after I turned 18. I was the dining room manager and had a lot of beef with our “executive chef,” this fat, greasy, middle-aged asshole that insisted we all call him “chef.” I eventually ended up getting fired after going to HR about “chef” sexually harassing the underaged girls that worked as servers, but the thing I hated the most about this pompous asshole was how he would feed the residents there- mind you, they were paying thousands of dollars a month to live and enjoy the amenities of a LUXURY home.
I don’t know if there was a distribution error or if this wannabe-Rordan-Gamsey was wholly off his rocker or what, but I came in for a shift one night where one of the featured meals (there were usually 2-3 to choose from every lunch/dinner and then we had special buffet days) was “homemade pepperoni calzones” and I walked in the BOH to see “chef” throwing PEPPERONI HOT POCKETS into the oven. One of my favorite residents, a little old Italian lady from Brooklyn who bonded with me over Park Slope, put her ticket in for one of the “homemade calzones” and I personally walked her out a different meal and told her what was up. She was just as furious as I was. I’m not surprised by this sad ass meal, at all, and it’s incredibly saddening to think this is how most home’s treat (and feed) residents.

Ive worked in multiple nursing homes and independent living facilities and this is sadly the norm! Residents will complain about their food, or simply not eat but their families are too busy to be bothered with their elderly to care. Complaints can be made, but the issue probably wont be resolved for a while. Imagine the building’s infrastructure. Usually thibgs like this come with multiple issues. Im sure that building has black mold and maintenance issues.
Only throw your old folks in a home if you hate em

OPs post though genuinely depressing. I worked at a retirement home and I literally had to quit because I was always fighting with the management over the god awful treatment towards the residents.
