Do you prefer dogs, cats, neither, or love both equally? Which do you currently have and did you grow up with any?

They're equally goofy/stupid in their own unique ways so I love them both.
Tinkerfan57912@reddit
Cats. All our cats have been very chill and cuddly. I don’t need to take them for walks or worry about weather. Dogs are unpredictable, they jump, and bite. Give me cats any day of the week.
ManicPixieDreamHag1@reddit
I’m a life-long cat person, but we recently ended up with a puppy (she was dumped on our street and it was either adopt her or take her to a high kill shelter).
I love her but I can’t say I love having a dog. It’s way more work and expense (though I’m getting more exercise myself now, which is a huge plus). I’m glad we saved her and that my kids will get to grow up with a dog, but when she crosses the rainbow bridge, I don’t think I’ll get another.
Enough-Secretary-996@reddit
Cat person who's afraid of dogs. Grew up with fish and at one point a hamster. Currently have 3 cats.
Powerful-Act3516@reddit
Both can be wonderful! Dogs are a lifestyle, though, and cats require the right personality
Fatbeard2024@reddit
Both
qu33nof5pad35@reddit
I prefer dogs. I grew up with mostly dogs.
Pitiful_Lion7082@reddit
Prefer cats, but I've had both. If I ever got a dog it would be a working dog.
CleverGirlRawr@reddit
I grew up with both, love both, am allergic to both so I have neither as an adult. In my home (allergies aside) I prefer a cat because I don’t like to be followed from room to room or feel like I have to bring my pet places.
Zillajami-Fnaffan2@reddit
I love most animals. Never had a dog or cat though
Spirited-Menu6152@reddit
I grew up with dogs. My parents were divorced and each house had 3-4 dogs. I like them but they have high matience. As an adult I have lived in apartments and found cats. I'm playing fetch with my cat as we speak. Just keep the litter box clean (its the decent thing to do anyway) and give them lots of stuff to climb on and they are happy. Its nice not to worry about my food disappearing or having to hurry home and let the dogs out at least in this point in my life
00death@reddit
I’ve had both my whole life growing up. Cats are far superior and I have 2 now, will probably never own a dog again.
mangoleeart@reddit
i love both but have a bird so i dont have either.
with dogs i really prefer larger dogs over small ones. no hate to small dogs, some are really cute, that's just not what i look for in a pet.
Resident_Bitch@reddit
Cats. My family has always had them. I've never known life without them. I have two currently. I like some individual dogs, but dogs are just too much... everything. I would never want one.
Pleasant_Studio9690@reddit
DOGS are my fave, but grew up with cats and horses, too. To be honest, horses are like big, dumb toddlers with their own personalities. I miss them.
wmp8@reddit
I prefer low needs animals, so it is cats for us. We have 2 short-haired cats that can be left alone for a weekend and barely notice we are gone. Automatic cat feeder and automatic litter box and we are barely needed. My parents have had 2 small dogs (both gone now) plus many cats and my brother has 2 dogs. Both complain/complained frequently about their dogs behavior and constant needs. They can only be gone for several hours at a time and the dogs have ruined many things. It's just not for me. I have met dogs I really like, but I do not want that responsibility.
xannieh666@reddit
Ive had dogs, cars, rabbits, ferrets and even pet rats. I loved each and everyone of them. They each had their own unique challenges but I would own any one of them again if I could. Health issues slow me down and I know it wouldnt be fair to them even if I desperately want a pet.

Chewiedozier567@reddit
I love dogs, I’ll tolerate a cat. As someone who grew up in a rural area, we always had a least one dog growing up, usually a beagle. These little hounds are great companions, easy with children and are quite laid back. As far as cats go, most of the cats we had were usually ones that stayed in the barn, they were primarily used to control mice.
Lovemybee@reddit
I"ve (64f) had both growing up, and I still love and have both!
kerisugi@reddit
I love both. Grew up with dogs, have cats now. I'd like a dog, but I live in a little apartment
poser765@reddit
I love dogs. I hate living with them. Love cats and love living with them.
Altruistic-Mud9413@reddit (OP)
Why do you hate living with dogs? My house feels so empty without one.
Crazy_Raven_Lady@reddit
Every time they hear a car go by, or a knock on the door, or a loud sound on the tv it’s like ten minutes of barking. I have cats and live in a quiet peaceful home with no barking. Also the smell 🤢 dogs fur stinks and their breath stinks. I think dog owners might become nose blind to it but even with regular baths they noticeably smell.
Altruistic-Mud9413@reddit (OP)
Not true at all. I don’t think you’ve been around very many dogs.
Crazy_Raven_Lady@reddit
I grew up with dogs and as someone who has worked as an in home caregiver for over twenty years I have spent most of my entire work days with dogs-for decades. They really do stink. Even if they just had a bath they still stink. And they bark so loud when they hear cars or other noises. It’s not just a few barks. It’s like five to ten minutes of barking. It is a sensory nightmare.
Altruistic-Mud9413@reddit (OP)
Idk what kind of dogs you grew up around but none of the ones I’ve had have ever been barkers or smelled.
Crazy_Raven_Lady@reddit
I’m perfectly happy with my cats, bunny, and chickens.
poser765@reddit
Because with a wife and two kids my house is most definitely not empty, and if there were no wife and kids empty sounds zen, not a problem.
Dogs are loud and overly attached. Walks and car rides. A dog is yet another kid I have to take care of.
mvanpeur@reddit
Yep. I grew up with so many dogs and dozens of barn cats. I loved them all. Now as an adult, we've had two dogs, and both ended up being A LOT of work, to the point that I don't even want to spend time with other people's dogs because I just see them as giant mess makers now. Having dogs as an adult has made me truly dislike dogs unfortunately. But we've had 6 cats (5 currently), and they are wonderful companions with a manageable chore load.
CupBeEmpty@reddit
In the opposite. I grew up around tooons of dogs. All my family had them except us (my little brother had asthma that was set off by dog dander). I love dogs. When I grew up and got my own I loved her even more. I had a couple cousins like you. They grew up in the country or on farms and had dozens of dogs and cats. The cats were all semi feral so we didn’t really get attached to them but the dogs were like family.
Thankfully my brother grew out of the asthma and he has had two dogs. My sisters both have dogs too. I had one until relatively recently. She’s buried out back in the woods. Now my kids have another dog and they love her.
throwRAanons@reddit
I love both and have found that I hate living with both 😭 grew up with lots of dogs and a cat and found out that I love the cleanliness of a pet free house. But I want everyone else to have them so I can visit
poser765@reddit
lol that’s perfectly fair. Cats are definitely messy but it’s just a different mess than dogs, and for some reason I’m more ok with that.
Definitely need friends with dogs.
nsbsalt@reddit
For me it’s the smell, I love all animals but I can tell someone owns a cat the first step into their home.
poser765@reddit
I feel like that’s the same with dogs too, right?
hx87@reddit
Cat cafes fill that missing niche for me
RemotePossibility399@reddit
I'm the opposite. Love cats but hate living with them and love dogs & love living with them.
cc-scheidel-33@reddit
Both....I'm "bipetual" hahahahah
heybud_letsparty@reddit
I'm allergic to cats and also don't like how unpredictable they are. I love dogs a whole lot, always had one growing up. Got my own dog as an adult and they lived a long great life, and I have no interest in getting another. But I like hanging with my friends dogs.
SpaceFroggy1031@reddit

Unfortunately my partner has one lol
AnybodySeeMyKeys@reddit
We had a dog and a cat growing up.
The dog? Not so fun. A dachshund with heart issues. But the cat was awesome.
So I've always had cats. The cat we have now, Ziggy, is the best ever.
MoominRex@reddit
How bad were the dachshund heart problems?
AnybodySeeMyKeys@reddit
Always out of breath. Mind you, it was an older dog when I was a kid and that was before vets were as good as they are today.
Schenectadye@reddit
You should really get Ziggy a stuffed duck.
AnybodySeeMyKeys@reddit
He has a stuffed squirrel that we fill with catnip. We call it the Drug Squirrel. He loves that thing.
Jefffahfffah@reddit
Love dogs. Always had dogs since I was a toddler. Big dogs, specifically. Family members have had cats but ive never lived with them. Dont want to. Only ever met a couple cats that liked people and they still weren't very engaging.
lisagd625@reddit
I'm definitely a dog person. I had a Dalmatian growing up, then my ex and I had a Chow/German Shepherd/Husky mix. In 2017, I adopted an 8-year-old Chow mix. I had her for almost 6 years until she had a major stroke 2 days before Christmas 2022. I still miss her so much and think about her all the time. I'm not emotionally ready to get another dog yet, but I'm sure I will eventually.
ember428@reddit
I love dogs and cats! I had a cat as a child but couldn't have pets as a teenager because my mom wouldn't allow them inside, and we had moved into town, so they couldn't live outside either.
I now have one of each!
lightspinnerss@reddit
Cats. I grew up with a ton. I’ve probably had over 30 in my lifetime (I’m 26)
I’m ok with other people’s dogs but I don’t want my own unless I lived on a farm or something where the dog had a job to do. For example if I got sheep I’d get a sheepdog. If I were a hunter I’d get some type of hunting dog
frisky_husky@reddit
I prefer dogs, and grew up with dogs. I am allergic to cats, but have nothing against them. It's obviously not their fault.
I don't have any issues with cats, and have known and loved some very sweet cats in my life (as itchy as they made me). However, I do have an issue with the fact that it's just considered somewhat acceptable (for some reason) to have a mean and poorly-socialized cat, and to do nothing about it because of the widespread (and false) belief that cats cannot be trained.
I'm pro-responsible pet ownership in general, and I think that attention in that direction is overwhelmingly and unfairly focused on dogs, when there are WAY more negligent and irresponsible cat owners out there.
pumainpurple@reddit
Always have both since adulthood. My father thought the only good animal was on his plate.
Streamjumper@reddit
Prefer cats. I've owned both dogs and cats, and enjoy both greatly, but owning a dog isn't for me anymore.
I will absolutely pet sit for someone's dog though, and play with em when I'm a guest. Hell, one of my friends Huskys knows I'm totally down to bring him for a walk in the woods anytime I show up there.
Number_Fluffy@reddit
I prefer cats. I'm not a dog person. I grew up with dogs. I've been bit by dogs (not my fault). I have a cat.
Valuable_Tomorrow882@reddit
Love both & have both.
Dogs are your extrovert friends who pump you up and are always ready for adventures, and are typically the life of the party.
Cats are your introvert friends who don’t say much, but will show their silly side once they feel comfortable with you, and can be trusted to carry your secrets to their death.
Life is richer with both.
kyliztu@reddit
I prefer cats. I don’t currently have any pets and I grew up not having pets. I like dogs from a distance, would probably not sign up to take care of one. I don’t want to commit to a pet at the moment, but I’m not closed to the idea in the future.
Red_Beard_Rising@reddit
I love both equally. I live with two cats. Dogs require periodic walks to do business. I live alone and am not going to expect a pet to hold it in for 10+ while I'm at work. Cats have a litter box. They also don't slobber, but the adventurous one forces me to look silly walking him a harness on a regular basis. Nobody ever has looked at a man walking a cat and thought: Damn, look at that bad ass walking his cat and shit!
meowmix778@reddit
I'd say I'm pretty 50/50. I like them both.
Dogs are much higher maintenance and need a lot more physical and mental stimulation. So on days when it's cold/rainy or I'm just tired I have to put a lot of energy into them I sometimes just don't have.
Cats are a bit harder to get the same level of affection from but they're also a lot calmer and more chill.
I like living with both but if I had to pick one cats are easier.
Teri-k@reddit
I love cats and I have one now. I grew up with dogs, and we had them when my husband was alive, but for me they're just OK. Too needy for me, too hard to be gone for a couple of days, etc. I'm a cat lady all the way.
CupBeEmpty@reddit
Dogs >>>> cats. I don’t hate cats per se but I’m mildly allergic and I don’t like pets that don’t give a shit about you.
I might risk my life to save a dog but sorry cats you are on your own.
tn00bz@reddit
I like cats, and a good cat is great... but dogs are so much better in every single way.
DankBlunderwood@reddit
I love both equally but will never get a dog again. They are just filthy and much higher maintenance than a cat.
dh1971@reddit
Love both but prefer cats.
Lurkalope@reddit
I really like dogs but I'm partial towards cats. Dogs are great if you want a steadfast companion to give you unconditional love, but I have higher standards with dogs. If a dog isn't well behaved I don't take interest in them, but I automatically want to win over a cat's affection.
witchy12@reddit
Grew up a dog person, got a cat a few years ago and am now solidly a cat person. I still like dogs, but can only spend a few days living with them before I want to bang my head against a wall.
biggcb@reddit
Love both. Have cats now. Had cats part of time growing up.
CelebrationFar1351@reddit
Grew up with dogs in the house and now have a strict no animals in the house policy. They are filthy. No matter how much you clean the house, their filth is everywhere. You have dog hair on all your cloths, and you stink all of the time whether you notice it or not. No to mention stuff in the house getting chewed up and destroyed despite training the animal. You can never have peace because your schedule has to include them no matter what unless you want the pissing and shitting the house. You have to get up early before you go to work, and if no one is home during the day, that creates complications. It’s like keeping a perpetual two-year-old in the house who can fuck up your drywall. I’ve always said that people who keep dogs are usually people who can’t handle the judgement that comes with human companionship and are socially stunted in some way; I have found that this is generally true. If your dog understood your flaws, it probably would want to hang out with you. Dog lovers shriek and go full invasion of the body snatcher mode on you when you declare that you don’t enjoy dogs to the same level that they do. These people are generally insufferable.
-make-it-so-@reddit
I grew up with cats, we had four at one point. Loved them, but I don’t really like cats anymore and will never have one.
I got my first dog as an adult and love dogs. I still have two. Honestly though, not sure I will get more when they are gone, I get so attached and stressed about their health, it’s really bad for my mental health.
standardnormalman@reddit
Love cats, hate dogs. Have neither, as I am allergic to both.
Altruistic-Mud9413@reddit (OP)
How can you hate dogs? Like having a preference is one thing but hate? They’re the most loving beings on eaglets and all they want is l companionship. Dogs are also literally there saving lives every single day.
standardnormalman@reddit
I have many friends and family with dogs and cats. Dogs are messier, needier, louder, and far more chaotic. They run away, they bark at anything and everything, they jump all over you and lick you with that wet tongue, and they stink when they get wet. In my eyes, dogs are toddlers and cats are teenagers. I understand that this is an unpopular opinion.
goblin_hipster@reddit
I grew up with neither. I currently have a cat and I Iove him to death. My parents have had 2 dogs since I moved out, and I love both of them. One day I hope to have a dog of my own.
I would say I love them equally.
Heavy_Bicycle6524@reddit
I’m def a dog person I don’t mind cats. But definitely prefer dogs
HoidsApprentice1121@reddit
I love cats, have cats, and grew up with cats. We also had a dog growing up, but we tolerated him (he was a good boy usually, but he was an accident). I really do not like dogs and prefer not to be around them, if possible.
FreeStateOfPortland@reddit
I love cats, dogs, horses, you name it. At home, I currently have cats, but that’s mainly because I don’t have the time to dedicate to a dog. I love dogs though.
Dr_One_L_1993@reddit
This. Dogs are more work/need more time (especially for walks outside) and being away from my home for 10-11 hours/day during the work week, it's just not practical (or fair) to have a dog. Maybe once I retire. I know the cats do miss me when I'm gone during the day, but they're also mostly sleeping during that time. And I don't have to worry about their bathroom needs since they have plenty of litter boxes.
morganalefaye125@reddit
I love both equally. In fact, I love all animals equally. I've had cats and dogs, both growing up and in adulthood. I've also had rabbits, and currently a bearded dragon, and 3 dogs
sluttypidge@reddit

Growing up, my family had two cats and a small dog. When I met my wife, she already had a small dog, who lived for many years after we were together. After he died, we got one cat, then a second.

Dogs not a fan of cats
No-Tart-1157@reddit
I love them all. I grew up with both cats and dogs among other creatures.
As an adult who’s pretty busy in life at the moment I definitely prefer my cat since she’s self sufficient at home. I don’t see myself having a dog anytime soon and would feel guilty keeping them cooped up inside.
malibuklw@reddit
I prefer cats. Dogs are a lot more work, and while I like many of them, I don’t necessarily want to have one. It is very cold here in the winter and I cannot imagine having to get outside to walk a dog when it’s gross. Dogs need more exercise than many people give them in the winter.
(Although, every time I’m at my friends house I leave wanting a black lab like hers, one that is already trained, and out of the puppy stage)
carmineragu@reddit
Cats. Grew up with both and currently have 4 cats and a dog. Dogs are just so much more work.

Love both, but still have a slight fear of dogs and they wouldn’t work well with my life style.

I've had both growing up. Far more cats though. If we had a pet it was usually a cat. Occasionally we'd add a dog into the mix as well...
At the moment, we're a cat exclusive home. I've been day dreaming (?) about possibly adding a dog into the household as well... But we're probably maxed out at the number of pets at the moment... And I'm not sure how well they'd adapt ... I probably would never see my oldest girl again, she'd be cowering in fear under my dresser...
Only_Presentation758@reddit
I have 2 cats that I inherited through circumstances and I love them, but they can’t compare to dogs. I grew up with and always had dogs, and the funniest, most fun and loving and enthusiastic dog breeds and mixes. It’s not their fault, but the cats are pets to take care of and try to engage with and keep content and keep safe, while the dogs were 100% members of the family.

I love cats. I think it’s hereditary too, on my father’s side. But we are also allergic to cats and never owned any. 😭 So my sister and I befriended every cat in the neighborhood when we were kids.
Later on, when I had my own kids, one daughter expressed that she loved cats as soon she could speak. The other daughter was always pretty ambivalent towards cats. And I just recently learned that my cat-loving daughter has named and friended every cat in the neighborhood.

I grew up with dogs. My whole life. Sometimes we had multiple dogs at a time. 1 Dachshund, 1 small beagle, 2 beagle hounds, one doberman, one springer spaniel. My mom has a thing for taking in strays. She also fed the stray neighborhood cats. One of those stray cats got pregnant when I was a teenager. And I kept one of the babies.
I have had her since she was born 15 years ago. She is much better than the dogs ever were. I have been turned off of having my own dogs, but I could see possibly getting another cat in the future.

Love both and have both, but I am admittedly more of a cat person.
ITrCool@reddit
I like both equally but didn’t grow up with either. 1) due to family allergies, 2) due to very strict laws in my hometown regarding dogs that my parents didn’t want to subject a dog to, 3) finally kid the costs involved. My family didn’t have a lot of money as I was growing up, so vet bills, pet insurance, buying/adopting a pet, any other fees and costs besides, just weren’t in the cards for us.
Patient_Character730@reddit
I love them both, and I've owned both cats and dogs. I am a better cat owner. Dogs need to go on walks daily in all kinds of weather. They need their poop picked up regularly. They are always excited to see you, even if they just saw you. Dogs are amazing, and that's why I feel bad when Im not giving them my 100%. Cats are independent, they come and go as they please. They poop in a box and since I have a robot litter box I don't even have to scoop it, just throw the bag out once a week. They just chill and sleep the majority of the time and they don't require much. Cats are my preferred pet to own.
McBernes@reddit
I grew up in a rural area where most people knew each other. Most everyone would let their cats and dogs run about. But even then "he dont bite" was taken with a huge grain of salt lol. Dogs. They know their place and usually stay in their lane. Cats just do whatever they want and leave you to clean up the mess.
spicyredacted@reddit
I grew up with a family dog. I like dogs but my lifestyle doesn't fit with owning one. I have a cat and she's the first cat I have ever had. Punkinsmom@reddit
Dogs are so loving, loyal and NEEDY. Cats are loving, not loyal, kind of assholes and fluffy. I've had both my entire life. I've always tended more toward cats. Male cats are far more lovey than female cats - but will still throw all the things off of your desk. I have one of each at this point and I adore them both. Not as much as they think I need to - but as much as I can.

Dogs and it’s not even a competition. I grew up with dogs and have always felt connected to them. My neighbor was a crazy cat lady that let her billion cats lose on our streets and they constantly pooped in our yard and got cat hair all over our porch so maybe I’m biased but I’ve never been into cats. They’re fine but I would never have one. My mom currently has one and she’s fine but I don’t feel any connection to her like I do with my sweet pit mix little guy, she’s just…there.

Dogs, because I’m egregiously allergic to cats. Which is too bad, really, because they’re generally cool and low maintenance.

Love and live with cats.
Other people's dogs are cool too.
CraftFamiliar5243@reddit
I'm more of a dog person than a cat person. I've had several of each. I find it harder to feel connected to a cat. They are so independent.
LilMissStormCloud@reddit
Grew up with dogs and presently have both. Found I am much more a cat person. All the loyalty of a dog without the having to take them outside for bathroom breaks in any sort of weather. At least my cats.
SavannahInChicago@reddit
Cats > Dogs. I love dogs, I really do. I would love a pittie and a greyhound. But cats are my soulmates. I have adored them for as long as I can remember. I had them most of my life. I can read cat body language better than people sometimes. I have no idea how to take care of a dog, but it's like second nature for me to take care of a cat.
I have a bonded pair named Olive and Kit. I have photos of them holding one another while they sleep. Right now Kit is swatting at the mice on the TV and Olive finally got the pillow after Kit would not let her up. Olive is only interested because Kit is now using the pillow. If Kit was not Olive would not care. Isn't it amazing how they all have their own personalities?

When I was growing up, we had a menagerie of animals throughout the years. Cats, dogs, rabbits, various birds, fish, gerbils, snakes, etc. But I have always preferred cats. I love dogs, but I can barely walk thanks to a hairline fracture on my hip, so I can’t take them for walks or pick up their feces.
wormbreath@reddit
I like dogs more than cats. We had working dogs and working cats growing up.
I have rabbits now. Never gonna go back to dogs or cats lol
riennempeche@reddit
Grew up with dogs but wanted a cat. As a child, I wanted to BE a cat, lol. Wife had a cat when we met. Had cats only for years until we moved to a house with a back yard. Now we have a dog and two cats. They barely tolerate each other. The 70 lb dog is scared of the 10 lb cat, but still tries to chase it sometimes. He has bled for the cat hating cause.

Individual-Theory307@reddit
I love dogs and I grew up with them. I also grew up with a cat. She was okay but she was distant. She only liked human contact when it was cold and she wanted a warm lap to lay on, or when she was hungry. Otherwise she kept herself hidden. The dogs were constantly around, sleeping at my feet or playing. So I am definitely more of a dog person. I currently don’t have either because I am single and my schedule is such that I could not devote the time needed to have an animal companion.
RsonW@reddit
I grew up with both dogs and cats. Love both but I live in an apartment and I think that having a dog without space for them to run around outside is cruel. Cats are much easier in that sense.

Cats more. I love dogs but there are a lot of entitled owners that have soured the experience for me. I live in a big city, the dog poop is endless, leashes always block the sidewalk, and the dogs that bark or jump as you pass are annoying at best and combative at worst. It’s too much. Not the dog’s fault, but there are too many negligent owners.
Living_Fig_6386@reddit
I like cats and dogs, but the experience is very different. Growing up we had a cat that lived nearly 20 years that was a huge lovable lump. He enjoyed nothing more than snuggling with his family.
As an adult, we’ve had various rescue cats over the years, and two rescue dogs. The cats had very different personalities, some cuddly and some aloof. One was even very playful — a tortoise shell female that was very clumsy. Our first rescue dog really loved me and kind of treated the rest of the family as roommates (she was very maternal toward the kids when they were little). Our second dog was the perfect pet; he was astonishingly smart and communicative, enjoyed spending time with every member of the family, and just a delight in every way.
Sadly, more than 50 years of having pets has meant a lot of sad good byes over the years as well. Our last cat passed about 2 years ago, and our dog passed away about a year ago. We are without pets now, and it’s very weird for me, as I’ve had pets most of my life. My wife particularly misses our last dog.

kowboy42@reddit
We grew up with both, but I always had more affection for cats. When I moved out of my parents house I moved into a condo with no yard so I refused to have a dog in that environment, so always cats. Cats.
I can leave my cat alone for 8 hours and not come home to a fucking disaster. We can go overnight without worrying about them. As long as they're fed and watered and the litter boxes are clean, they're happy.
Storage-Helpful@reddit
I grew up with everything. Cats, dogs, rabbits, horses, chickens. We almost always had at least a couple of cats and a dog. I can't say I prefer cats over dogs, but I choose cats over dogs every time right now because of my lifestyle. I work nights and am away from home for 14 hours a day, 3-4 days a week. My cat never cared as long as she had food and water and I spent time with her when I was home, but I've only seen a handful of dogs in my life would be happy with that kind of lifestyle, and it's not right to bring a new dog into a situation it's not going to thrive in.
I recently lost my last cat, a pretty lady who had been my companion for 17 years. It's the first time I haven't had a pet in more than 25 years, it's been an adjustment. Hopefully the cat distribution system strikes soon.

I grew up in the country with outside animals. The dog was only allowed inside during like hurricanes and freezes (he did have an ac unit and a heater in his large, personalized doghouse). Had one cat and the coyotes got him. Now I have 2 cats and 2 dogs. All were rescued from various situations, only one was bought and he was on sale at the pound. I would like to never ever ever have a litter box in my home again. I hate them. I’ll never go searching for another cat but I feel like one will find me eventually. I’ll always have dogs. I grew up with dogs, prefer dogs, and have a dog. My parents both hated cats so I wasn’t really around cats growing up and even though I have friends who have some very nice cats that I have petted, I still find them slightly unnerving and hard to read. I do get nervous around certain breeds of dogs because I grew up in the country where a lot of people had loose dogs they trained to be aggressive and I was regularly chased by them on my bike. I’ll never be fully comfortable around a Rottweiler, for instance.

We weren’t allowed to have a dog growing up because my father had a dog get hit by a car and the driver left it dead on their porch without calling, so they came home to it (this was 50+ years ago when leaving your dog in the yard wasn’t uncommon). He blamed it on allergies for many years but finally admitted it was why.

Had cats as a kid. Decided in my late teens that I was okay just not liking dogs - they smell, they drool, they poop everywhere, etc. Then, my mom and former stepdad went to Bed, Bath, and Beyond and came home with a rescue dog from an event at the shopping center. That dog made me love dogs and all other animals.
Currently at home with my husband, my sleeping 3 y/o, my dog, my mom’s dog, and my cat, and mourning the recent loss of our beloved dog. Pregnant with our twins.
I think it’s easy to forget how awesome cats are when you don’t have them, but it’s also easy to forget how easy it is to love a great dog.
