GenX, I drank a bottle of wine today. Am I the only one?

Yeah, yeah, yeah I know we have a lot of teetotalers here. I am often one myself. Occasionally maybe once a month every 4-6 weeks, I get fed up and bored of sobriety. Today I drank an entire bottle. Sometimes, not very often, it might be a bottle and half.
My kids are grown. They are doing fine. My parents are aging. I've grown distant from some siblings due to life, many years, it happens. I don't have too many friends. I've moved around a lot. I can get stifled, bored, lonely and just have nights I want to drink and listen to Pink Floyd, REM, or the Grateful Dead. Ya know, relics from the past...
Do any of the rest of you ever just still have a weekend, night where you imbibe a lil too much? You are not an alcoholic. You don't have a problem. You just kinda want a little levity, escape here and there, every now and then.
I drank a bottle. I'd love to hear from those who do that and even better drink two or close to it. You are fine. We just want to cut loose here and there, we are not dead in the grave yet, and that is okay, that's fine.
I can't be the only one? Any imbibers out there who imbibe here and there but still toe the line after all these decades and remain respectable citizens, parents, friends, co workers, persons? Most of the time, we are good boys and girls but sometimes we can cut a little loose. I was raised in a hardline fundamentalist religion and all these years later, that guilt, tsk tsk tsk can still bite me in the ass.
Love to hear your stories, perspectives.
Thanks for any support for this.
Cupcake541@reddit
Yeah. I’m living in a new place, across the country from everyone I know and love, and I get a lil bored of myself on occasion. I might catch a buzz once a month, and have a dance party with my fave music. Don’t really drink other than that, though.
tired-middle-ager@reddit (OP)
That's me! I will drink a whole damn bottle maybe once a month and literally couch dance (snap fingers, clap, raise hands to the music from the couch) for an hour or so to Bob Marley.
Cupcake541@reddit
Yep. Uh huh. That me too! I’m actually snapping my fingers right now!!
Silver_Breakfast7096@reddit
A bottle is only 4 glasses. I’m in WIsconsin. That’s hardly something to write home about.
I no longer drink. Since going through menopause it causes heart palpitations and raises my blood pressure for about a week. So yeah. Now that the kids are gone and I can day drink without guilt? I can’t. 🫤
FeeLost6392@reddit
It’s 5 glasses. 5 servings.
Silver_Breakfast7096@reddit
It’s 5 glasses if you are in a restaurant that is charging by the glass and it’s owned by corporate private equity. ABV alcohol by volume may change the pour size.
FeeLost6392@reddit
It’s 5 glasses at 12%. 5 ounces. Look it up. 5 servings. 5 drinks. Equal to 5 beers or 5 mixed drinks. A strong white will be more. Almost 7 at 15%. The issue is the under count. If everyone who kills a bottle of wine a day thinks it’s 4 when it actually 5 or 6.7, that A LOT of extra drinks you think you are not having each week. It’s like pouring your own mixed drinks by eye instead of using a measuring device. They’re almost always over pours. “I only had two drinks, officer”. Are you sure?
Silver_Breakfast7096@reddit
Used to bartend in the 1990s and early 2000s beverage training was 4.
JenninMiami@reddit
If I use flutes for my prosecco, it’s 5 glasses. A regular stemless wine glass is 4.

Depends on the glass, lol.

I went to AA and call myself a recovered alcoholic. I was drinking like an alcoholic but control is one of my character flaws. My drinking was more about control and secrecy than getting drunk. I kept it hidden from everyone. One day I realized I was perpetuating the cycle of secrets in my family. So I got help. It’s been 6 years. What really helped was to take meds for depression. I don’t like reckless avoidant behavior anymore.
alone_in_crowds@reddit
I'm still able to drink half a 5th and be fine the next day. As long as I don't drink like this frequently. Oh and I have to have eaten and hydrated.
CheesyRomantic@reddit
I have done it. Mostly when my husband is away (once or twice a year) on a Saturday after my kids fal asleep.
I don't have many friends at all. I really have 1 close friend. She is super busy with her kids and on weekends she and her husband and kids actually do fun things together.
So I am lonely and bored. And often angry or frustrated with my husband bc he's become something of a jerk towards me specifically.
So when he goes away once or twice a year for work, I buy a bottle or two of wine and chug it alug. Lol
tired-middle-ager@reddit (OP)
I suggest binging on tater tots to stave off any hangovers. They really work!
CheesyRomantic@reddit
Oooo tater tots 😋
I generally start binging on junk food (chips, popcorn) and Italian curred meats, lol.

I’m such a lightweight now compared to the olden times of college. The next day is ruined from two glasses of wine. But if I could do it, I probably would.
_Losing_Generation_@reddit
At 58, it's lost it's appeal and I really have a hard time the next morning. Not worth it to me anymore. An occasional beer or two maybe and that's about it. And even that is getting less and less
One-Sock7417@reddit
Once in a while (a GOOD while) I’ll drink an entire bottle by myself. I have a wine glass that holds an entire bottle, so I just tell myself “I’ll just have one glass.” 🤭

Working on some wine right now. Easter is a tough day for me, that's my excuse. But every month or two I like to call my sister, pull out my secret pack of cigarettes and get through a bottle of pretty cheap wine. Lol. We have a mostly fine time talking and it just feels good to spend time with her, albeit in the phone, and escape into that bottle. I don't sweat it. I used to be much more abusive so I allow myself this 'luxury' every 2-3 months.
keithrc@reddit
Feel like sharing why Easter is tough for you? I've never been very religious and I don't have family drama, just wondering if it's one of those. Sorry you're feeling that way.
karenlind9@reddit
It was the last time I saw my Dad. He died a few weeks later. And this year, Easter fell on the same exact date - I am pretty sure that was the first time since. Once your mind goes down that road, it tends to stay the course. So I baked a ham - one of his favorites - using a recipe that would have been very similar to his - at 10:30 last night. Lol
Thank you for asking.
keithrc@reddit
Late night baked ham is still baked ham. :) Here's a rando internet stranger hug for you.
karenlind9@reddit
The best kind of hugs! And apparently the best kind of ham too!

I think it’s important to remember that a bottle of wine (assuming it’s a regular old 750mL) is only 4 glasses. You’re good.
Missamoo74@reddit
It's technically 7.5 standard drinks. But I have done it myself and it's not the end of the world until it's regular, like mine was for a bit.
voidchungus@reddit
1 bottle of wine is 5 servings of alcohol, not 7.5.
Missamoo74@reddit
A standard drink is any beverage containing 10 grams of alcohol, regardless of container size or alcohol type. It acts as a unit of measurement for safe consumption, allowing for consistent tracking of alcohol intake. A single standard drink is equivalent to 285 mL of full-strength beer, 100 mL of wine, or a 30 mL nip of spirits.
voidchungus@reddit
Not sure where you're getting your info, but for wine, a standard 750mL bottle contains closest to 5 servings of alcohol. There might be slight variations based on the precise alcohol content of the specific wine in question, but 5 is a pretty good estimate, based on 12% ABV. This is how it's calculated in the US, anyways. Perhaps there's a regional difference in what's considered a serving of alcohol, based on where you live?
Missamoo74@reddit
You have the answer in your reply.
voidchungus@reddit
A glass of wine is typically 150mL, not 100mL.
Missamoo74@reddit
A standard drink is 100ml. A glass of wine could be anything depending on who is pouring. From a booze bus stand point you have best be counting standard drinks. A glass of wine would be 1.5 standard drinks. 2 glasses in an hour would give you a blood alcohol reading of approx .03. Now if you continue to have one glass an hour you are rising in 1.5 increments. So if you have one standard drink in the first hour and one each hour after that you can potentially still drive legally. If however you are drinking 1.5 standard drinks that changes quite dramatically. It would put you over the legal limit quite quickly. The information on the bottle I shared was about standard drinks which is also a health directive as well as a guide for driving.
What is typical and what is standard are two separate things.
Also the world is bigger than the US.
voidchungus@reddit
The world is certainly bigger than the US. Which is why I politely accounted for that in a previous reply.
I don't know what to tell you man. 150mL, or close to 5oz, is the typical pour for a glass of wine, based on standard units of alcohol (again, using 12% ABV as the example, which of course not all wines are).
I see and acknowledge what that particular bottle has printed on it that you showed. It is incorrect.
You will remain convinced that 100mL, or 3.4 ounces, is a standard glass of wine, in terms of units of alcohol. That's incorrect.
I'm not the only person who thinks this; this isn't my personal opinion. Feel free to search for this info, and you'll see it corroborated across multiple reputable sources. Here's just one. I have no personal stakes in you changing your mind or correcting the info you have. I'm sharing what I know to be true. You're welcome to reject that information despite the fact that it's, again, not my opinion, but rather, well-published information.
likeittight_@reddit
That this person needs to undercount should tell you how “good” you are…
BokChoyJr@reddit
The standard is: 5 oz glass of wine (5 glasses in a bottle) = 1.5 oz of liquor (40% alcohol or 80 proof) = 12 fl oz of beer.
30 years of responsible alcohol training has hammered this into my head.
numanoid@reddit
*This formula was created before craft beer was a big thing. One can of 5% Budweiser is not the same as one can of a 12-15% imperial stout.
BadHairDay-1@reddit
Before my husband was diagnosed with diabetes, we sometimes would each have a bottle. Now, he can't drink because of that, and I can't, because of gastric bypass. I sometimes really want a sip of margarita.
StonedGhoster@reddit
Once a month or so my wife and I will have many drinks together while sitting in my office listening to all the music she didn't get to experience (she's younger than me), and I get to regale her with all of my music trivia. Sometimes we will listen to her stuff. It's usually unplanned; better if it happens organically. Neither of us drink very much or often otherwise. But it's good bonding time and does wonders for our mental health. It's a nice reset for us. That's about the only time we indulge in alcohol.
WhoLetsMeAdult@reddit
Wine? No. One glass and I'm tipsy; two and I need a nap.
Whiskey, rum or tequila? I'm in.
Zetavu@reddit
First off, GenX is not a place for teetotalers, that's GenZ.
Secondly, you sound like you have very little experience with alcohol. In fact you sound too young to be GenX.
Lastly, I'll give you the advice Ozzy gave the rest of us. Wine is fine but Whiskey's quicker.
Seriously, no, if you have issues and depression, do not turn to alcohol, you should see someone. Mid life depression is real, and everyone needs a helping hand from time to time.
But yes, if you are going to overdo it, whiskey will get you there quicker and then you puke it up before you crash so the hangover will be less.
I am terrible at giving advice.
darnedgibbon@reddit
I had a 2013 cab in the wine fridge. My 23 yo son only had half a glass. 😋 the rest was delicious but I had a solid headache the next day 😂
nativehuntress_@reddit
I wish I could once in a while but the juice just isn’t worth the squeeze anymore. It disrupts my sleep and I feel like crap for at least 2 days. Good on you that you still can once in a while.
sunqueen73@reddit
Just 2 days? More than a shot or half glass of wine, I'm awake for like 3 days, half of those with an enormous hangover headache. There was a time, I could drink heavy drinkers under the table. I do miss getting the occasional buzz, though
nativehuntress_@reddit
I used to be able to drink like that. I didn’t even know what a hangover felt like until I was almost 30. I too miss the occasional buzz.
Substantial-Chip-102@reddit
I love wine but can’t sleep if I drink more than a glass. Most say it helps them sleep. Glad I am not the only weirdo! Cheers

I have a few gin & tonics on Saturdays. Not all Saturdays, not even every other one. But if it were every single one of them, so be it. On rare occasions I drink more. I really like being responsible and driving home sober. It’s such a far cry from my younger, infinitely dumber days.
No-Attitude1554@reddit
Im 54. In my 20s I would binge drink till I puked. My last official time getting really drunk was in 2013 at a all you can drink company Xmas party. I almost never drink. I hate what it does to me. I feel remorse around it for a good 3 days after. Remorse that I poisoned my body. I had my fair share of alcohol. I know what it is and im done
makeitfunky1@reddit
An all you can drink company Xmas party does NOT sound like a great idea, lol.For so many reasons.
marblemaniac0113@reddit
I have been known from time to time, drink and listen to good music and remember good friends from the past (most of them have moved away, a few have passed on some just lost touch) I have had many fun evenings just like this alone with my memories. I am 50+ so most of my friends are lame and dont want to ever do anything .
repomonkey@reddit
I've been off the booze for six weeks now for the first time in my life. No particular reason why i did it, just fancied stopping for a bit and so I did. Might start again, might not. I usually had two large vodka and cokes every night, sometimes more and it had been that way for many decades ... so this is new to me.
AdnorAdnor@reddit
How’s your sleep? Notice any changes?
repomonkey@reddit
I find I go to sleep earlier now, but there hasn't been a huge improvement on longevity or quality.
AdnorAdnor@reddit
Roger that- turns out my body doesn’t mind 7-8 hours of sleep when I mind the caffeine. My deep sleep is impacted if I imbibe at night. Wouldn’t know unless I tracked it. Good on ya for trying something new 🙌
StalyCelticStu@reddit
Well done, be proud of yourself, that's a tough nut to crack!
repomonkey@reddit
In a weird way it really wasn't for me - not wishing to downplay anyone else's struggles - just my own personal experience.
It was like smoking. When I finally packed it in (14? years ago) it was the simplest decision - I just stopped. Yes, I was grumpy for 3 days, and for a year or two after I missed that post-pub meal drag on a Marlboro Light, but now it's a long distant memory.
Really not sure if I'll drink again. I will say that I haven't missed it, but I think if I rule it out completely that will doom the enterprise.
Few-Pineapple-5632@reddit
I never drink anymore. I drank a lot, way more than a bottle of wine daily until 2013.

My wife and I had a friend over yesterday and we drank a bottle of champagne, a bottle of Pinot noir and then 2/3 of a bottle of wine our friend brought back from a recent Chile trip. So we got almost a bottle per person lol.
Aggravating_Jelly_25@reddit
This is the way. I enjoy my wine with friends and loved ones. All moderation for me. I am not an addict or alcoholic. I can have a glass and sometimes just don’t feel like finishing it. I need to be in the mood, aka happy times.
CaterpillarDry2273@reddit
I have to have wine to sleep. It's really the only thing that manages my sleep anxiety. I know that's bad. But I've had a rough life and lost my son 7 years ago. With friends it's 2-3 drinks when we get together. I have about 2.5 glasses a night. Well most nights. I may skip one. Last week was the anniversary of losing my son and two of the nights last week , I finished a bottle. If I could sleep then I would barely drink. I know people say it disrupts sleep, well yeah it can. It doesn't for me, everyone is different. if I drink a bottle, yes it will wake me up later, but I don't go over 2/2.5 glasses.
Accomplished-Beat779@reddit

I'm not sure how many people know you CAN have non-toxic relationships with alcohol. I drink a glass once a week, maybe but this whole "abstinence / excess" game people play is odd.

It's my damn upbringing. Hardline teetotalers have tipsy shamed me...
ThoughtIknewyouthen@reddit
Having moved overseas (but grew up Baptist in the heart of the bible belt) I can see now with extreme clarity that no nation does teetotal-ling quite like America. And also it seems that no one does "sober alcoholic" as a personality trait quite like America. It's just odd, from an outside perspective.

Pre-child, I used to like to play records and drink a bottle of wine every now and then, maybe a couple times a month to once a month. Then, when I had my kid almost 11 years ago, I completely lost the desire to drink. About a year after I had him, I decided to try drinking a bottle. It made me so sick and I haven't drank wine since. I never really gained back my pre-child desire to drink. I may have one cocktail extremely occasionally, about three times a year, and only when I go out to eat. I also used to really love drinking beer before I had my kid, but I can't tolerate it since having him either. I haven't drank a single beer in 11 years. Oddly enough, I used to really love bread before I was pregnant. And that is another thing that I absolutely can't stand anymore either. The smell of bread when I was pregnant used to make me hurl every single time and ever since then, I can't stand bread which may be why I also hate beer now.

I always get downvoted for this, but I’m going to say it anyway: do what you want, but alcohol is a carcinogen. It causes cancer. There is a warning label on it the same way there is in cigarettes. It even makes peri-menopausal and menopausal symptoms so much worse, and contributes to visceral fat (the belly fat right around the middle). People that say, “It’s ok in moderation” are wrong, as that is what was believed in the past - currently it is not ok in any amount. They used to say the same about cigarettes. But go ahead and downvote.
ennuiismymiddlename@reddit
I was an active alcoholic for about 15 years, up until 2012. I was drinking about a liter of vodka a day, plus beers. Long story short: I got sober, now I’m 46 and was just diagnosed last week with end stage pancreatic cancer. I have about a year left to live, more or less. The doctors told me my past drinking likely had a lot to do with it. Alcohol sucks.

Oh no, that's no fun. Fortunately, I will become a bit grumpy by late afternoon. I'll have to fight a bit to not go to bed too early which means up at 3-4 am, no good.
If I can stay up until 9 pm then I'm good. I will sleep through to 5 am and be back on my deep sleep cycle.
Alovingcynic@reddit
Post menopause, drinking alcohol gives me bad sleep, tinnitus, headaches, dizzy spells. I'd been a long time imbiber, but my body is telling me it's enough already. I've been doing guided hypnosis (Journey with Jayni) on You Tube, and while I was skeptical, it's getting me through any anxious squirrel brain evenings and putting me right into deep slumber. I really loved a dry white wine: it just never liked me.

If I only ever drank with friends I'd never drink. I like the taste of Flor de Cana rum. I like how I feel after drinking a few drinks. Sometimes one drink tastes like more, sometimes not so much. It all depends.
I live on a sailboat in BC and am quite comfortable in my own skin. Always have been. The other night I had a few rums and remembered someone had given me some mushrooms and had a great night. Woke up the next morning feeling right as rain when I shouldn't have because most of the rum was gone.
I love being around people and chatting but don't miss it when I'm not. I guess you could call me a social introvert. I'm good either way so to answer your question, all good. You do you. At our age who gives a fuck. We're Gen X and we're at a point where we don't care, if we ever really did care what other people thought.

mushrooms and drinking a bottle of rum, solo. That's awesome. Also, is BC British Columbia or Baja California? I'm picturing San Felipe, btw

since i started on the wegovy, my desire to drink has gone WAY down, and my ability to consume has as well. I don't think I could fit a bottle of wine without puking anymore. I'd feel so sick. and then the hangover off wine is much worst than anything else.

I rarely drink anymore but at Christmas I get the pleasure of dealing with 4 generations of female in-laws. Most people bring food or gifts to family Christmas gatherings but I bring a bottle of Bourbon. And I try my damndest to finish it. I'll be a lil grumpy by late afternoon due to poorer sleep last night. I'll get in bed early around 8 pm and bide my time reading until 9 then doze off. Tomorrow will feel back to 100% again. Then I just stopped. 826 days ago to be precise… Miss it though - loved an Otago Pinot Noit or a good Rioja… never going to get to drink the 24 bottles of vintage 2000 Grand Bordeaux from various Chateaux that I decided to collect 26 years ago… But that’s ALL ok… I remember it well and with love ❤️

One bottle of wine on a bad night? Not a problem.
One bottle of wine, every single night? Problem.
It sounds like you just wanted to let off some steam, and wine was your drug of choice to do so.
No judgment here - I used to do the same. I don't anymore, because I no longer have the physical tolerance for alcohol (bariatric surgery will do that to you). It's not a bad thing, really - saves me money and it's healthier for me.
But the last time I drank an entire bottle of wine, I did so on a Sunday night, knowing full well I had to go to work in the morning, but foolishly thinking I'd be ok, because I'd never been hung over, no matter how drunk I got the night before. Until that time. I spent a good amount of time in the bathroom at work, unable to keep anything down, and then having to lie to my boss and telling them I had a stomach bug so I could go home and suffer in peace (the truth probably would have gotten me fired). Never again.
D05wtt@reddit
Last year, you could count on 1 hand how many times I had a glass or shot of anything. I’m the kind that gets red, flushed, hot, and I can’t sleep well if I drink. So at my age, I’d rather have a good night of sleep than drink a glass of something.
dontwannaparticpate@reddit
Yeah sleep and health are too important to me at this age as well; there’s also all this science we didn’t have that tell us how awful it is for us. There is a newer one stating that binging in one episode (and by this they mean 4 glasses and up) even every so often causes liver scarring/fatty liver.
D05wtt@reddit
Yeah apparently it’s part of my genetic makeup that I’m “allergic” to alcohol. So I drink a lot less now. From a very early age, whenever I had an upset stomach or stomachache, my father would give me a shot of cognac/brandy and it always worked. To this day, if I have an upset stomach, I do a shot of whatever I have: whiskey, scotch, or brandy. It’s always made my stomach feel better.
The other thing you mentioned…my cousin’s husband died of either cirrhosis of the liver or liver cancer. I can’t remember which. He was a Brit. Drank like a fish. Every single time I saw him, he was drunk. It was a horrible end for him. Even worse for the family he left behind.

On my own, well, I go through periods of complete abstinence to drinking 1 or 2 here and there or have a day of binge drinking. It happens, I know it isn’t good but fuck it, we only live once. Give the liver a good time off and a chance to repair itself.
It often purely depends on my mood and I also find that when we have nice weather, it’s just nice to sip on an ice cold beer.

Not a good idea binge drinking. I cut down then cut out from peak Covid of 3x bottles a week. Just recently started drinking wine again in the last year but drink it over 3/4 nights at eeekend, then a break. Try to have a week without as well. Yes it’s nice to have taste of nice glass of wine especially with a meal, but it’s even better not to have a hangover or impact your liver.

A bottle isn’t very much wine, honestly. It’s only 4 glasses. I’m always surprised by people talking about how crazy it is to finish off a bottle of wine by themselves. A fifth of liquor? Yeah, there’s a decent amount of alcohol to do in one sitting. A bottle of wine? Meh. I guess you can probably tell where I would land on this particular topic/situation. ;-)

Who cares? A bottle of wine in an hour? Maybe a concern. A bottle of wine over the course of a few hours? No big deal. It’s not any different than a few cocktails or beers over the same time period. If it becomes a problem and impacts your health, life or family, then it’s an issue. Cheers!

This year up to now I’ve drank twice: on my 60th birthday in January, and yesterday as it’s Easter and my husband finished work early and the sun was out.
The problem is, I feel it when I have a drink now. The puffy face and feeling s**t reminds me why I don’t.

Also not an alcoholic, or that big of a drinker because perimenopause sucks balls. However mildly depressed and apathetic is kind of an understatement. I will need to replace the bottle immediately so I have bubbly on hand in anticipation of the BBO because that is one of the only joys left.

I’ve noticed that over the decades, “official health advice” shifts all over the place about both food and beverages. Right now, we’re in a period where the official advice is “all alcohol bad.” I just roll my eyes and remember the 80s when all fat supposedly made you fat, but refined sugars and highly processed “fat-free” foods were A-okay.
My philosophy is to know where most of my food comes from (including a large proportion that is organic produce we grow on our place) and what’s in it, but not be too much of a purist. The occasional Hershey bar or Kraft mac & cheese is fun and highly unlikely to kill you. And if I want to have wine with dinner? I will.

I get drunk on vacation. I enjoy all inclusives, and get to know the bartender by the pool intimately, they see me come, they know to get ready for my drink. I like to change it up. I even taught a young bartender how to make and old fashioned. He put it up on the list of cocktails they have. I was just sitting drinking rum and cokes (hard to screw up) and I noticed, hey, they have a random "cheap rye heavy whiskey" of dubious origins, Sugar, bitters.. lets frickin go. ask him, he didn't know right away, so I (drunkenly) give him the recipe, and he makes up one for me. was awesome. Now normally, I don't drink to get drunk. one or two is usually enough, get a starting out buzz, nothing serious. I usually will make myself an old fashioned, or drink it neat if i'm lazy. I've been experimenting with a few other whiskys and whiskeys. and i've often found cheap rye based whiskey is great for old fashioned. I do enjoy a wine, I tend to prefer reds over whites, but I tend to choose wines based on the name... There was a good blended south african wine I had a while ago. it was a blended red wine. that stuff was evil man, it was called Honey Badger. and really after a bottle of that, like the Honey Badger you didn't give a shit ;) and it went down smoothly. Sadly it's not available here anymore ...

I shoot on a pool league on Mondays, I'll usually drink a bucket and a shot or two. Once the weather breaks around now, I'll have another beer and maybe two more shots, out on my deck when I get home. This is over the course of about 7 hours. On the deck I listen to the local radio station, which has a program called Monday Night Metal. Mondays have become the highlight of my week the last few years. I'm 56, keep my weight right and eat well, I just like to party.
I generally run 5 miles on Tuesdays, that way I have to ask myself if it was worth it. Thus far, the answer keeps coming back "wouldn't have it any other way."
AdnorAdnor@reddit
Refreshing to hear “I just like to party” yes, man, that’s my jam. It’s not about raising hell (well, not anymore), but throw a little Overkill Bat Shit Crazy and it’s a party happily with myself. Guilty pleasure is bourbon neat with a dash of walnut bitters and G.W.A.R.

I go away with different women-only friendship groups twice a year. So in these 4 different groups it’s usually 6-8 long weekend trips per year. On those weekend trips I over indulge in both food and drink and I’m completely care free.
Sadly, the last two trips have been followed by major gastric ‘attacks’ - so I’m going to be easing back until I get a proper diagnosis. In the tests so far, it’s been discovered I’ve excessively high blood calcium levels (potential overactive parathyroid gland), I have something wrong with my liver (potential NAFLD) and I’m severely deficient in Vitamin D. They also haven’t really identified the true source of the gastric episodes either!
So sadly I’m going tee-total until medically things are resolved. I’m on two new medications now, as I wait for a DEXA scan to see what’s happening to my bones…

Nope, I just finished a bottle over 2 days and recently drank one in a night. It isn’t hard to do over the span of an evening. I used to easily finish the equivalent of a bottle or more (2-3 bottles shared) with my love in a night but we have scaled down quite a bit since then. I am a member of three wine clubs so i have a good selection to choose from. Nothing like a good glass of wine/bottle of wine to unwind!

From 2006-2011 I lived in Seattle. Didn’t realize the Washington State was the 2nd highest producing wine state. So I set about on an adventure to explore all different wines. I focused mostly on reds. But on average, I would drink at least a bottle a night. Moved to Australia, and set out to explore all the Australian wine regions. Would drink at least a bottle a night. Then Covid hit, and I wasn’t travelling for work any more, and I switched to Vodka (as the amount of red wine was making my gums hurt and serious stains on the teeth). Ironically, I lost 20 pounds from shedding the red wine. One bottle of red wine is basically half your caloric intake for the day. Now I just drink a galley full of Vodka. Enough to make a Russian be impressed.

Once every few months, I'll buy a bottle of red (usually Cab Sav) and drink a glass or two. Any more than that and I feel absolutely fantastic in the moment, but the next morning is going to be slow/laggy.
I used to drink a bit in my late teens (19, Europe) to my early twenties (23) and quickly found that it didn't bring out the best in me, so I just completely quit.
During covid, I took up making cocktails. It was fun but the problem was... I just don't drink much and the only thing that doesn't leave me with a headache is red wine- the drier the better.
So, a couple of glasses every couple of months works. I don't judge anyone who drinks and doesn't make the rest of the world miserable for it. Casual drinking and listening to music/chilling/hanging with friends is good stuff. :- )

Depends on the day. I run a marathon D&D campaign, with 8-10 hour sessions. I’ll generally kill a bottle or two while I’m behind the screen. Occasionally I’ll crack open a bottle on a lazy afternoon and knock it down over 4-5 hours. But we’re talking a time or two a month, not daily.
The definitions of heavy drinking seem to shift all the time. As long as it isn’t becoming a frequent habit, I’m not worrying about it. I grew up with 3/4 grandparents alcoholic, and the other likely would have been if she hadn’t been institutionalized due to schizophrenia. I know what problem drinking looks like, and it’s an entirely different level than what I consume.
HaikuDaiv@reddit
Both of my parents were alcoholics. At least one of my brother's is (and sober).
I will drink a large bottle of mead with my dinner, tonight. And that is all.
But I am very conscious about it, you know? I have seen how it can be a problem, was a problem. Especially for and with my Dad. So, I have a beer or cider or glass of wine most nights. Sometimes more. But I do it from desire, not need. And as long as that is the case, I allow myself to drink.
The day I need it, I hope i will have the self awareness to put it all away, and never touch it again.

I stopped loving even occasional drinks I stopped loving but about six months ago I rekindled my relationship with legal cannabis after thirty odd years apart and it’s been really lovely.

Since I was a teen, I’ve been addicted to food and liked alcohol on occasion. I got on Ozempic to lose weight and found that it kills my ability to drink while only somewhat subduing my cravings for food. I lost weight and got off the Ozempic. Now I’ve regained more than half the weight but still can barely drink alcohol. I guess we all have our crutches.
No_Associate_4878@reddit
Ozempic has made it so I barely feel the effects of alcohol and can wind up drinking too much without noticing. I also have ADHD, so I can literally not notice how many times I've refilled my wine glass at a party.
TallStarsMuse@reddit
From being on the GLP-1 diet subs, people have such different responses to these meds! And the way that it affects their desire and tolerance for alcohol is just all over the place. I’ve seen other people say they are less affected by alcohol, but I’ve gone from a lightweight drinker to a super lightweight! I thought the effects would wear off once I was off the Ozempic but they’re still there.

High functioning drunk checking in. I smoke weed daily and drink at least 5-6 times a week. I can easily do a bottle of wine a day.
I don't miss work. I'm active. I'm generally happy with my life. I don't drive intoxicated. I see no reason to change my habits.
This is obviously toned down over the years when I did weed, liquor (shots, beer, vodka) on the daily in much higher quantities than I do today. Still made it to work the next day.
I type this just having got home from work. I have a glass of Malbec and a full bowl.
PitoChueco@reddit
I would never drink again if I could smoke weed. Unfortunately my state and employer prohibits that.
Hope to retire in 5 years and be California sober.
finny_d420@reddit
I'm in Vegas so 24/7 access to both. I wouldn't mind Cali sober life. Like when I quit cigarettes a few years ago my body and brain came to alignment and I quit. The fact that I'm down to wine only is an indicator to me that I'll probably feel that way one day. It's just not today.

More than 4 drinks in a day is a screening tool for alcoholism. That is, if you've never done that, you aren't at risk for alcoholism. If you have, then it's possible/likely.

spookydookie@reddit
That’s just the initial question to see if they need to dig further, then they find out your average weekly drinking. And if that’s high then it goes through a checklist where you need 3 other positive symptoms before you have “mild alcohol use disorder”. That’s a long way from saying drinking 4 drinks one time makes it likely that you are an alcoholic.

drinking a bottle of wine is one of life’s greatest pleasures
Majestic-Strength-74@reddit
I mean, today is Easter, so I feel like this is bait.
I have no idea how much wine/champagne I drank today. We started this morning at the early, early church service (8 am - honestly, I think the 9:30 service is early, but there were plans with the family), so barely a sip there for communion. Get home, take care of the pups & get my sides & baskets ready to go. Then we head to the 2nd daughter’s house (originally I was territorial about hosting the holidays because, parental units do that. Letting it go has been amazing! I do 1 holiday - Thanksgiving or Christmas - & the rest I show up with what I’ve been asked to bring. It is AWESOME). Arrive around 11 & there are Mimosas while the littles hunt for eggs & spread basket confetti everywhere. (There were also Bloody Mary’s, but my body doesn’t like hard liquor any more). Lunch is served along with wine - fun, visiting, more wine…
Come home, weed my raised beds because my trees think that is an amazing place to spawn new treelets, train the puppy, do a load of laundry (sheets - I hate sheet day), then make Chicken enchiladas with sour cream sauce for dinner - at least 2 glasses were consumed while cooking - grabbed another to take into the bath (Dr. Teal has a new scent of epsom salt - gardenia grace 5 stars)…just changed into my nightgown & contemplating if I want to get up to grab another glass.
Ask me on a normal day. I’d probably Telly you unless you’re drinking a bottle a night & hiding the evidence, you’re okay. On a holiday, I think you’re just being ridiculous.
curiousme123456@reddit
Hell yeah. Mine isn’t wine or beer it’s liquor. Might have 2 drinks with dinner out …get and u know how the bartender pour at home can happen. I have said to myself sometimes….”oh f it just finish the bottle” and the last drink is a 4 finger pour. So yeah I know it n
For you traveling that much and city to city ….especially true. Shit how many times have we have we walked in solo sober and stumbled out. Gets later someone is Butkus a drink vice versa …..
TheGriff71@reddit
You're not the only one. It happens now and then. A bottle of wine is not uncommon. Sometimes I don't finish it and have it the next day. Sometimes it's a bottle to two bottles. I used to do a 6 pack. Went to wine as it did better. I have a shelf of whiskeys, scotches, rum and vodka that I get into as well. This is usually on Friday or Saturday. Other days occasionally. I always go into work when needed.
Never think that you're the only one doing this. There are plenty.
Donut_Bat_Artist@reddit

My husband and I moved to FL when the kids moved out. We purposely wanted to be Disney adults. It was great, we'd go to a park one day a week, get some fast passes and have a great day. Then 2020 came and it's now the payment lighting lanes and we will not pay for something that should be free.
So, now we basically go to Epcot one day a week and have a great time drinking and people watching. We trade off each week as to who's "drinking day" it is. So we can always get home safely, while still having a great day drinking and maybe doing a ride or two. Second favorite is Hollywood Studios, the brown derby bar makes a great martini flight!

As long as you can maintain and keep your shit straight, there’s nothing wrong with catching a buzz. I was never a fan of alcohol, even back in school. I drank some, but my choice was always weed, and would be now if I didn’t get drug tested at work. I know sentiment towards weed is changing, but there’s certain fields of work that I doubt it will ever be accepted. It just pisses me off that some people I work with drink pretty much every day and I can’t really ever kick back with a doobie and relax. Because the time I do, I know would be the Monday I walk in with a person wanting a cup of pee.

If you're counting standard drinks, like one 1.5 ounce shot of 80 proof alcohol, then a 750 ml bottle of 12% wine has 5 standard drinks. My alcoholic mom would pour from a magnum into a 16oz wine glass, almost to the top, and call that a glass of wine, so I may be a little sensitive about how many drinks a bottle of wine contains. No judgement, though
hazysummersky@reddit

We're both people heavily invested in hobbies that look a lot like work on paper. At 9pm we knock off and watch streaming TV. My wife will sometimes have a glass or two of wine, I have 4 or 5 vodka and sparkling water. I should probably drink less but the world should probably not be falling apart around us. We've moved around a lot since Covid. We're very happy where we are, but however nice it is, it's still the suburbs. I spent most of my adult life living in cities and towns, the suburbs feel like a barracks for workers / consumers or we're being warehoused here. We both work from home with all the hypnotic routine that comes with that life. I'm glad I managed to get my drinking down from what it was during Covid, so there's that at least.
Ordinary-Practice812@reddit
For some reason I love you description of the suburbs. Live in one myself bc I still have teenagers. I hope to go somewhere different once they’re out, I work remote. But like you said, where?
Oh and yes, I do drink still. Mostly wine, not every night. Occasionally I drink a bottle when my kids are at their dads and I talk to my 1-2 best friends on the phone. I’ve done it. I don’t do it anymore. My best friend died from alcohol abuse at 53. It lost its luster. I’ll have one drink. I may have 2 over an evening. But nothing good happens after 3.
But it’s ok - the world don’t end because you drank wine. No one got hurt, nothing got broken. I’ve had occasions when I’ve hit it hard and felt awful the next day. Said stuff I regret. That’s why I did t really do it.
Alcohol abuse is not black and white - it’s a spectrum. Fact is, it’s not good for me. Kills my gut bacteria. Ruins my sleep. Is a waste of $. Makes me depressed Causes me to make bad decisions. Makes me act like an asshole at times when I think I’m witty. I used it to cover social anxiety as I’m autistic and have ADHD. But now I’m just dealing with the anxiety, I tell people if I’m anxious socially and 99% of the time they say “same here”.
If you want some wine every now and then go for it. No one is a saint. Just take care of yourself ❤️

I wish I could just enjoy a whole glass of wine once in a while. But I'm on Xanax and so I can't. Maybe a few sips on special occasions, but that's it. It just hits too hard. 🙁 Anyway, every once in a while it's okay to overindulge in something. It's human.

Two years ago, I drank so much the night my adopted dad died and said a lot of things the kids told me later really hurt their feelings. I'm scared of what I will say that will hurt them again, so I don't drink at all, but I think about it daily. I wish I could drink a bottle but I don't think I would stop.

My favorite is a glass of tequila. A glass of wine is great too. However, I’m an herbal enthusiast. So I do that most of the time. It’s my party.

I occasionally drink 2 glasses, but I’m small and have low tolerance and 2 glasses for me could EASILY be equivalent to probably most guys drinking a bottle.

Once in a while, but usually just a glass or two or a cocktail or two here and there. I still imbibe but not a lot at any one sitting or every day. Unless im on vacation. Then i enjoy my drinks.
Suspicious-One-1905@reddit
I drink adult beverages 😄 on Friday and Saturday evening and sometimes on Sunday evening, usually playing cards against hubby. Monday to Thursday is for coffee and water. Drinking a bottle of wine in one night is ok. We all need to relax and decompress and alcohol is the historical option of choice. Don’t stress about your consumption. You should be aware that black outs from alcohol can occur without any warning or awareness. Please be careful as things can happen, especially if you are drinking alone
Embarrassed-Ad-1432@reddit
Not a wine guy. I'm a homebrewer and involved in the local homebrew and craft beer scenes. There's A LOT of beer in my house. I don't drink to excess (never really did, tbh) but most days will have one or two. Occasionally more, or a higher ABV sipper in the colder darker months. My intake is definitely down since COVID lockup... Plus am 5 years older. Everything in moderation, including moderation, right?
trashboatfourtwenty@reddit
Drank most of my life, turns out alcohol and me aren't great. Use is progressive and can creep on you, but everyone has to figure out what is right for them. Objectively the substance is bad for you, but the real issue is the social preasure to accept unhealthy levels of use in my mind. If you feel ok ask your doctor, but if you have doubts I'd suggest going without for a while and seeing how you feel. Based on my experience anyway, take care
spartygw@reddit
Nobody’s life ever improved because of alcohol.
No_Associate_4878@reddit
I don't agree. Many, many, many lives have been ruined by alcohol and many more have been damaged. But for people who are not prone to addiction, dependency, binge drinking or frequent enough use to cause significant health problems, alcohol can be a great joy and social lubricant. Experts have declared there are no physical benefits of any type of alcohol and quite a few ways it can harm you, but for some there are emotional, social and psychological benefits. A love of Scotch or wine or craft beer can lead to a healthy-enough hobby that keeps one engaged intellectually and socially with those who share your interest. A reasonable amount of alcohol can make one feel more comfortable in social situations. It can help friends bond as their inhibitions are lowered. Many parts of the world have rich traditions making wine, spirits or beer.
Refined sugar is awful for you, yet few would argue that there are no social or cultural benefits to our many rituals involving food with sugar.
trashboatfourtwenty@reddit
Simply put, totally. I should say even as a way to pass the time it is a bad thing, it becomes a de facto hobby that is worse than wasting time, and here with OP it sounds like a replacement for boredom or something which is not good. I used it to deal with strong emotions and anxiety which is worse, but none of it works with booze haha
Particular-Safe-5557@reddit

Last summer I had a (very slight) elevation in some liver levels. Nothing anywhere close to something to really worry about, just a possible trend. Since then I’ve really lessened what I drink, but I realized probably nobody would notice bc that just means I don’t drink at home much anymore. I still drink when I’m out with friends at dinner. But I feel you! I do tend to plan nights to have a few drinks now. Watch a movie, have a couple of glasses of wine. Which yeah, might become the whole bottle if I watch a second movie.

I have alcohol of all sorts in the house but I’ll go months without drinking any of it. I do go out and socialize with friends every couple of months and we go crazy, singing karaoke, getting stupid, and closing the bars down. Or do a concert or comedy show. Sometimes. Not often, but sometimes.
In the past 10-15 years, my body has changed to the point where if am drinking alone, one beer can be enough to give me a headache. And these days a hangover very often leads to a migraine, so it's very much something to avoid. Interestingly enough, if I am out drinking with friends or at a drinking party (which is a common work thing in Japan where I live), I rarely get a headache. Go figure. An example of the different hormones at work when we are in social settings vs alone, maybe.
Despite the risk, sometimes the mood is such that it just needs a drink and vegging out to some old music.
(but only one. That migraine risk is always hanging over my head)

I like to have wine fairly often but I don’t go for the whole bottle any more, mostly because it completely fucks up my sleep! I do live a glass of dry red wine, one or two and I sleep like a baby. I say, as long as you feel in control then you’re good. If you start to feel out of control then that’s another thing to deal with.
Dirty_Wookie1971@reddit
I will drink wine with my dinner tonight, haven’t imbibed since new years, it’s my annual thing. New Years to Easter.
Signal_Contract_3592@reddit
Girl, please.
Wise-Lab-2321@reddit
No. The state of the world is extremely upsetting and my job is awful and stressful. Alcohol gives me an escape, but only sometimes because I do have little kids and a husband and responsibilities. I try to limit myself to no more than two drinks in a sitting, and only on the weekends, but sometimes it becomes 3/4 or all of a bottle. I stay away from hard liquor for the most part. But nothing makes me feel better/ less stressed than alcohol does. I wish i still had friends to do happy hour with (long story as to why I don't, mostly involves people moving away, having kids and my workplace going remote).
Shoehorse13@reddit
I'm someone that has drank more than recommended since my teens and at times have had a problem with it but have cut back significantly in my 50s. I am certainly not above polishing off a bottle on my own on occasion, and will also go without any drinks for weeks on end. I'm also quite successful, quite physically active, and have a very fulfilling life.
All things in moderation, including moderation.

Teetotaler here for the past 17 yrs or so. However, over the past 2 yrs, I’ve gotten into weed. I’ve gotta be honest: it’s weird to have youngsters at the dispensary educating me abt the benefits of this ___ vs ___.
blankdreamer@reddit
Smashed some vodka and chips and hit the tunes last night. It was a good night.
NecessaryStaff9544@reddit
You smashed vodka and chips together? Is that some new viral food? And you hit the tunes? This all sounds very violent. :)
cosmoboy@reddit
I would, but I live with an SO who is very sweet and generous but barely gives me room to breathe.
Friendly_Nobody_8264@reddit
Can’t drink that much anymore. If I go out with friends I’ll have a martini
PipEmmieHarvey@reddit
I’m definitely more partial than I should be to a glass or two a day. Need to cut that back a bit. My father-in-law used to own a vineyard so it was a permissive environment!
orangedrinkmcdonalds@reddit
Hell yeah. If I’m in the groove for some wine and great music I’m going to indulge. That’s the beauty of perspective.
Not every night, not never, just when the feeling hits deep.

We aren't in the grave yet!
orangedrinkmcdonalds@reddit
Nope.
I took it too far to the health-conscious side and was miserable. Now I drink my wine, smoke the occasional cig and just worry less. Swear I’m happier
adelec123@reddit
I had a beer. I'm not a big drinker, but I do like a cocktail or beer every now and again.
No_Can2570@reddit
I drank half a bottle and about 4 beers. Maybe I'm an over achiever or an alcoholic.
Dont_Care_Meh@reddit
Meh, you're fine. I do that every once in awhile. But honestly, my age is what is making it far less often. It now always messes up my sleep, and I reliwbly get a pounding headache the next morning, too, so I always think, "that 30 minutes of buzz is just not worth it, ugh."
And that convinces me to nope out until something stresses me out or I overthink a situation, and don't remember the not-so-good aftereffects and pick up a bottle of Costco's finest.
flyfishfem@reddit
I see no problem here. You’ve found the line but haven’t crossed it
lasiv@reddit
2 bottles of ed cabernet for me. I'm with you. 0 fucks left.

Didn’t drink a bottle of wine, but I’ve had some whiskey.
AsparagusOverall8454@reddit
Had several drinks yesterday. Feel okay today, except I’m tired.
martinfendertaylor@reddit
You are not the only one. Work is stressful. I'll be good for a week or two... Maybe a month and then get a mid bottle of wine and drink. Don't really get drunk, just warm and chatty. With all the things going on in the US and the world, it's almost required I think. Whatever.
tired-middle-ager@reddit (OP)
Thank you, thank you.
AdultinginCali@reddit
He he! A bottle and a half on Friday. It was ridiculously yummy and I watched a bunch of horror movies while sipping on wine.
RockabillyHog@reddit
I drank one last night.
douyaslaten@reddit
I go out once a week and shoot pool with my partner. We day drink and sometimes keep drinking after dinner. It's a great midweek escape from the real world.
tired-middle-ager@reddit (OP)
No harm, no foul...
serizzzzle@reddit
Hell yeah.
Civil-Philosophy1210@reddit
A bottle is not that much 🤷♀️. I don’t drink most weeks but when I do I usually finish the bottle. My drink of choice is Prosecco and it doesn’t keep well. Cheers! 🥂
Affectionate_Dot9101@reddit
Yup, last night had too many beers playing my atari 2600. Spoke in cursive and dont remember going to bed. Double ipas got me. I don't do this often but it feels like a reset after the hangover pisses off
Infinite-Lychee-182@reddit
Just stay away from Thunderbird, Wild Irish Rose, and wines that come in a box.

Yes sir will do.
Mammoth_Ad_483@reddit
I had a fifth of Mad Dog 20/20 and a 6 pack of Zima

Downed a bottle of whiskey this weekend.

Had some cava today to ‘celebrate’. (Isn’t bubbly a traditional easter drink?) hubs and I split a bottle. Now we’re about half done with a bottle of red… feeling kinda good but need to clean up the kitchen!
sravll@reddit
Nope. Not today, but on Friday I had 8 coolers.
Junior_Statement_262@reddit
Uh cheers?
IAmDaBadMan@reddit
I do enjoy an afternoon lunch of salmon nigiri and nigori sake on occasion.
tacogratis2@reddit
I drank a bottle last Wednesday. For religious reasons.
quipit-real@reddit
Some of us do a whole bottle on a Tuesday night. As long as you’re not harming anyone else and are true to yourself keeping your sht together I would not be concerned. Some folks let it go to be a problem but legal, financial and community issues aside give yourself some latitude here.
Just_a_girl_in_NJ@reddit
You're good. Just moderate.

Yes. I still like to get drunk now and then. It's as fun as it always has been, especially with other people. And in my 50s I drink better alchohol, and am (usually) smarter about keeping hydrated during, so hangovers are nearly non-existent.
Most weeks? I have maybe 2 drinks, on average.
On vacation? A cruise, the beach, Vegas -- where I don't have to drive, don't have to get up for work in the morning? I happily drink all day. No regrets.
pepepippy@reddit
I drank 6 whiteclaws and smoked a whole pack of cigarettes. Won’t happen again until the next family holiday. Probably won’t even drink in between.
