I have a serious question.
I love my suppressor but shooting 300BLK subsonic has been a serious financial burden for me. After half a mag, I could’ve shot an entire box of pistol ammo, hundreds of 22s, or even a few mags of cheap .223.
Is it worth it to get into reloading for just 1 caliber? What would the actual cost be? Or better phrased - what would the cost savings be, assuming these $0.19 bullets? Case, primer, powder costs?
firm_hand-shakes@reddit
I pick up range brass. Mostly 5.56 and cut it down for 300. 19 bullet+6 primer + 9 for powder is 34cpr for 300blk subs for me.
Now I do have quite a bit into my reloading setup but I enjoy it so that’s a wash as far as money.
Ambitious_Box_96@reddit
If you have your own brass with these 20 cent bullets your looking at like 40 cents all in to reload per round. After you buy the equipment of course. Do what you want with that info. I just got into reloading 308 and 5.56 and after a buddy hooked me up with some equipment and I ordered a bit online I was able to get a nice setup for 400 bucks.
Ambitious_Box_96@reddit
I'll worn you though labor is involved. It takes like 5-6 hours of work to turn once fired rifle brass into ready to go ammo for 200 rounds.
LostPrimer@reddit
200 rds? Thats like an hour of actual work. You don't have to sit and watch the cases tumble.
Ambitious_Box_96@reddit
Would love to see you do it in an hour lolol, 200 charges from a fancy trickler takes about an hour alone and that's one of 7 steps, keep in mind this if for precision .308 with nearly 50 grains of powder not 9mm
LostPrimer@reddit
Post is about 300BLK subs, which is \~10gr of 1680. With a Lee auto-disk the kerchunk chunk takes 15 mins to charge 100 cases.
Yes if you spend time picking out only the grains of powder with the same diameter and length in order to chase 9s, it will take quite a bit longer.
Some of us like to magdump into trash quietly
HannibalWrecktor@reddit
I was going to post a photo of a rough itemized estimate i did a few weeks ago of my cost of 9mm and 300 blk.
It was using berrys plated, but I also bought a few thousand of these campro rounds and that lowered cost even more.
Cant post it though, dont think this sub allows photos?
evasive-manuever@reddit
Damn. If you wouldn’t mind sharing it, I would appreciate it!
HannibalWrecktor@reddit
How can I post in this sub? If not Ill send in DM.
hellzraven7@reddit
Yes, reloading 300 black can save you alot of money in the long run...once again the long run. You must dedicate time for this and build up your loads. Price depends on you.. if done right, you can reload less that .40 cent a round.
TheoreticalLulz@reddit
This is especially true with subsonic loads, which place less stress on the brass and use less powder, in general. It can be VERY economical.
evasive-manuever@reddit
Thank you both.
Any recommendations on a starter friendly guide anywhere? Recommended gear list? Etc?
YeaIDontEvenKnow@reddit
A Lee press kit and Lee die set will likely be the most economical equipment to start with. These 2 might set you back about 200 or so. Powder, bullets, primers, and brass can vary in price. I don't look to achieve supreme accuracy with my hand loads, so it ends up costing me ~35 cents per round. I convert 556 brass, so brass is almost free for me. This vendor sells bullets at a great price. I buy powder and primer at a local gun store. If you're looking to make subsonic bullets, I'd recommend a chronograph. I use an Athlon myself, but that can cost another 350. If I didn't reload, I wouldn't have gotten into 300blk. The time and effort is something you'll have to determine yourself if it's worth.

I’m not sure if there’s a friendly guide to follow, but these days, I’d get load data from Hogdon’s site since it’s free. It will give you bullet selections, recommended powder amounts, and overall cartridge length.
For equipment, I just started with a basic Lee kit. It’s comparatively inexpensive, and will work for quite some time. Mine still works well, though I would absolutely get a digital scale instead of what they ship with by default.
THEDOCTORxF15@reddit
Currently loading 300 blk at 41 cpr. Accurate 1680, range brass, berrys 200gr, and cci #41. Very consistent and accurate loads compared to what I was buying online before. Was paying 63 cpr and would constantly have rounds break the sound barrier.
Triggerz777@reddit
It averages around 0.35$ and I have bought from these guys before and they're very quiet with their load data they include
Gecko23@reddit
I reload 300 subs.
My kit consists of a Lee Breech Lock Hand Press ($75), a set of 300 blk dies ($40), a simple beam scale ($35) and then components (empty cases (can save what you shoot from commercial ammo), primers, powder, bullets) I can sit at my desk, watch Netflix and crank out a hundred rounds an hour with this setup.
Right now, with the components I have in stock, it works out to $0.30/round.
Primer and powder prices have been quite high for years at this point, so it's worth watching for sales, free hazmat shipping, local options, etc, but it's still hugely cheaper than commercial ammo for this application.
kopsis@reddit
Cost will typically be $0.40 - $0.50 per round depending on how you get your brass and how many times you reuse it. But that assumes your time is worth nothing and that you're not trying to amortize the equipment costs.
Reloading isn't hard but it is time consuming. Cleaning brass, lubing, decapping/sizing, cleaning again, priming, charging, seating/crimping, testing. You can spend money to speed it up, but that eats into your savings. If you're not getting into it as a hobby and just want to shoot suppressed for cheap, get a PCC and blast away for $0.25 per round.
ohaimike@reddit
300blk is one of those cartridges you WANT to reload and that'll actually save money on. I started reloading because of it
Factory subs are what? 70cpr? I'm loading them for around half that or less, depending on when I bought the materials
And the best thing of all, 300blk and 223/556 share the same case, so you can convert 223/556 by just cutting it down, and since it's a super common caliber, brass is pretty much free just like 9MM
SadFinger3453@reddit
I got the cheapest setup purely for 300blk. I also bought these exact bullets from this vendor and am completely satisfied. Reloading 300blk is very easy
Kookaburra2@reddit
I always caution people against reloading for the sole reason to save money. Honestly unless you have a lot of self control what you'll end up doing is shooting the same amount of $ each range trip, but shoot way more and with higher quality ammo.
Treat reloading as another hobby that you'll have on the side that is adjacent to shooting. It's extremely fun and rewarding, but you can also fall down the rabbit hole and end up dropping $2-3k on reloading equipment.
Also factor in your time when you are reloading. Sure you can get 100 of these out in an hour with a single stage, but could that time be better used elsewhere in your life?
Interesting-Win6219@reddit
I reload 300 black subs for like 44 CPR. Do the math
Eternal_Glizzy_777@reddit
Can anybody vouch for these guys? I generally don’t shoot reloads but this seems like a good deal. It’s for me intrigued.
LostPrimer@reddit
These are bullets only. You will get a bag of bullets, not ammunition. You will need the equipment to reload these bullets into cases with primer/powder.
Eternal_Glizzy_777@reddit
I don’t reload, but I have a friend who does. I normally don’t shoot reloads, but at this price it’s affordable to pick these up and then toss him some loot. I still come out ahead.
DrNuclear14@reddit
