what is a small luxury you’ve had to give up due to the cost of living?

i’m sure we all know the toll that the cost of living has taken on us. people are suffering and struggling to afford the bare minimum. but beyond the necessities, what is a small luxury you’ve found that you can’t afford no longer?
for me, it’s cafe visits. i’m not big on fast food but i love cafes. i used to treat myself to a coffee and toastie out every friday, walk to grab a coffee on the weekends and constantly meet friends over coffee
i don’t really do that anymore, it’s too expensive. my lunches out have become a thing i indulge in on payday only and i meet my friends for homemade coffee at mine or there’s. i will still get a coffee occasionally to drink whilst walking around and admiring the scenery but but rather than taking in the view around me i’m instead kicking myself for spending the £6 and not bringing coffee from home in a flask
Agnesperdita@reddit
We used to eat out at our local pub every Friday. It was our little luxury: a nice way to end the week, relax, catch up with each other without having to cook, and plan the weekend. It cost £35 tops for a main and a drink apiece, and less if you went for one of the less expensive options e.g pie or pasta instead of steak.
We go once a month or six weeks now, if at all, and we never order things like steak unless we have a money-off voucher. You can easily spend £60-£65 now on what used to cost £35, and the quality has declined. I know it’s because they’re struggling with increased costs and we still want to support them, but a single glass of wine is £9 now and a small sirloin that used to cost £14.95 is £10 more expensive but a sparser portion on the plate. This is in a modest chain eatery in an unremarkable Northern town. It’s too expensive now to be more than an occasional treat.
Inner_Relationship28@reddit
We've basically all had a pay cut with how fast things have gone up
Friendly_Yak_2713@reddit
Wages have risen faster than inflation though so this isn't true. On average we are better off but just obsessed with complaining about it.
aqueousinnocence@reddit
I haven’t had a pay rise this year… I call BS
Friendly_Yak_2713@reddit
You could save the government billions of pounds per year because rather than have ONS survey thousands of data points we could clearly just use your singular experience and extrapolate from that instead.
High level thinking - I'm completely stumped as to how such a person didn't get a pay rise.
aqueousinnocence@reddit
I haven’t had a pay rise this year either. Our department is paid more than the others as we are the main producers on site, the departments on minimum wage have been given a pay rise, but not us. Make it make sense
Inner_Relationship28@reddit
Perhaps minimum wage has gone up and they have to
aqueousinnocence@reddit
It has, but how is it fair giving a pay rise to the other departments and not ours. We have th east glamorous and most dangerous jobs in the mill hence why we are paid more. It’s going to be even across the site soon.
Inner_Relationship28@reddit
Because they have to by law, do you have a union?
aqueousinnocence@reddit
Sadly we don’t have a union, at least as far as I’m aware.
VixenRoss@reddit
My partner has a reward app, so he uses that to get discounts etc. (or so he tells me!)
JimBobMcFantaPants@reddit
I just met with a friend for a drink and two large glasses of wine and 2 packets of crisps cost £21 🤯🤯🤯 and I’m in a village in Devon!
Current_Fly9337@reddit
We went to a cafe on Saturday. Coffee, apple juice, scone and lemon tart - £24 😭 I’m in Newcastle where wine tends to go from £6-£14 a glass depending on where you’re at. I’d pay it for wine but coffee and juice!
Sussurator@reddit
You can do all of that on a park bench. Would recommend 👌
Amazing-Heron-105@reddit
Both have their perks but sometimes you just want the charm of the pub
tmr89@reddit
Should have bought a bottle for better value
tmr89@reddit
Yup. Unfortunately pubs have gotten greedy. Not satisfied with the large margins on drinks, therr trying to gouge on the food, too. Lower quality, smaller portions, higher prices, but still moaning
bill_end@reddit
Pubs run primarily on minimum wage labour which has got considerably more expensive, plus they have to pay commercial rates for leccy and gas which are way higher than the capped domestic rates.
Sure, some may be price gouging but I bet most are just trying to keep their head above water. Pubs are still closing at a massive rate, partly due to a changing society but also because they just can't turn a profit, even charging 6.50 a pint
Known-Nature6056@reddit
Fish and chips. Had it every Friday night as a kid, it was a cheap meal, now it’s horrendously expensive.
AFCHighbury@reddit
It is so depressing that a coffee out is now £6.
Maleficent_Day_3869@reddit (OP)
and that’s without any additions like syrup or an extra shot. massive tub of nescafé’s instant costs me the same😬
Purple-Toe-645@reddit
1) you’d be supporting nestle
2) instant coffee shouldn’t even be classed as the same drink
aqueousinnocence@reddit
What’s wrong with Neslé?
dinobug77@reddit
That’s mental. Where is a coffee £6? An excellent artisan coffee shop in central London that I like is less than £5…
No_Preference9093@reddit
In like Costa or Starbucks b or Nero. It’s a bit under £4 in most independents but people do love their chain coffee.
ChefGrouchy8538@reddit
I work at costa and I approve this message, price band 6 (most franchise stores) are OVER £4 for a small.
dinobug77@reddit
I personally don’t understand it when there are much better places out there that are independent so supporting local businesses and they’re cheaper!
No_Preference9093@reddit
Me neither but there’s a reason they’re so successful.
dinobug77@reddit
I’m sure there is but I can’t think why it is’ They’re expensive, noisy and their coffee is not great. Oh wait - I do like a frappe sometimes when it’s really hot.
ChanceBranch1146@reddit
I bet it will be some sweet pisswater from Starbucks.
CraftBeerFomo@reddit
Extra large strawberry matcha oat Latte with an extra shot, extra syrup, marshmallows and cream or some other nonsense no doubt.
ChanceBranch1146@reddit
Definately. The sort of piss for people who don't actually like coffee!
Maleficent_Day_3869@reddit (OP)
i do like coffee, i drink it black at home. however i figure if i’m going to spend the money and buy coffee out as a treat i may as well make it nice and sweet with cream and syrup and all the fancy additions 🤷♀️ i’m paying all that money anyway
ChanceBranch1146@reddit
Well of course if its full of crap its going to be expensive.
Maleficent_Day_3869@reddit (OP)
even a plain latte is £5 though. the difference really isn’t huge
ChanceBranch1146@reddit
In a chain maybe. Even in the best independents you don't pay that unless you're choosing a specific type of bean.
Maleficent_Day_3869@reddit (OP)
my favourite independent cafe charges £5.20 for a latte with no additions🤷♀️
CraftBeerFomo@reddit
Ordering coffee flavoured dessert drinks rather than actual coffee from independent high quality coffee shops should be illegal tbh.
Maleficent_Day_3869@reddit (OP)
‘coffee flavoured dessert’ still has actual coffee in it… if i’m forking out coffee shop prices i’m at least going to make my drink fancy
CraftBeerFomo@reddit
People who order those drinks don't actually like coffee.
Maleficent_Day_3869@reddit (OP)
wrong. i drink black coffee at home and don’t put any sugar in it. i get fancy sugar laden coffees when i’m out though because it is a treat
CraftBeerFomo@reddit
But all that shit doubles the price so you're not saving money by adding it just giving yourself a higher expense and diabetes.
Maleficent_Day_3869@reddit (OP)
not really, it adds maybe £2 onto a drink that’s already £5. coffee shop drinks are a treat for me so if i’m spending the money on treating myself, i’m going to get a nice drink. it’s not like it’s an everyday thing 🤷♀️ i think you’re assuming it’s a regular thing. most of my coffee consumption is black coffee i make at home. but if i’m going out for it i’m going all out
CraftBeerFomo@reddit
Those drinks are bloody disgusting though, its not even coffee at that point.
dippedinmercury@reddit
Just get filter from Pret. 99p 🤷♀️
CraftBeerFomo@reddit
Or 49p when you subscribe to their App for a fiver a month. I'm in Pret daily and spend less than £20 per month, which is allegedly what some people in this thread pay for a single coffee these days.
dippedinmercury@reddit
Yep, that works as well.
I go very rarely as I don't really like eating/drinking on the go, but it has happened on bad train days when I've rushed out without breakfast to avoid getting in late. Quick croissant and filter coffee can really save those mornings.
As black filter is my preferred coffee, I just keep filters and a filter holder plus whatever coffee is on special offer this week in my drawer. Easy peasy. Same expense as if I was having coffee at home.
CraftBeerFomo@reddit
49p for a black filter coffee from a cafe is an expense I'm willing to spend.
Friendly_Yak_2713@reddit
It's not though is it. That's just a total exaggeration.
AFCHighbury@reddit
The area I’m located - Windsor / Sunningdale / Virginia Water - £5+ is becoming pretty standard for a hot drink (coffee, hot chocolate).
AFCHighbury@reddit
Clearly you don’t live or frequent the South. There are so many places that are £5+
LFCRedAnt@reddit
Actually is though,it's about 20 quid for the 4 drinks alone. Around a fiver for a cappuccino for instance
Friendly_Yak_2713@reddit
Where are you paying that? At an airport? That's mental - four quid is maximum I would see in London for basically highest quality coffee you can get
LFCRedAnt@reddit
They're usually at big brands,Starbucks,Costa etc cafe Nero doesn't seem as bad there's very little small cafes by where I live they're all big brands mainly, there's a few but they're breakfast places too and usually quite full just to go and sit in with a coffee
indyreds24@reddit
Yeah a coffee is like 4 quid in London from independent places, don’t know where they’re getting 6 from…
VixenRoss@reddit
I took my kid out for a Costa at the hospital with my partner. I couldn’t eat anything because of the test I had.
It cost me £16 and I had to go back to an and e with my daughter because something in the food /drink made her face swell up!
CraftBeerFomo@reddit
Its not though is it.
Rabbit-1989@reddit
Went to Costa the other day for 4 coffees/hot chocs and 3 sweet treats (one each for the kids and husband and I shared) and it cost well over £30 🙃
Phinbart@reddit
I bought a frappe from Costa a few weeks ago and was stunned it was just under £5. I used to not even consider the price when purchasing one, but a combination of leaving uni and the time that has passed without a branch nearby since has shocked me back to reality. And don't even get me started on the cost of the food...
Chunswae22@reddit
Yes, especially as that's my go to social activity with friends as I dont drink. I've picked up a Nespresso cheap on marketplace so will have coffee at home instead now. It makes really nice lattes and fancy drinks so not too bad.
aqueousinnocence@reddit
I had to sell my camera equipment to cover my council tax 😭😭
cbaotl@reddit
Lunch at work. If I don’t bring lunch from home I eat the emergency work cereal I keep in the office. I would rather give up lunch in work than lunch at the weekend with my husband or friends
First-Act-8752@reddit
I can afford to buy my lunches at work but still refuse to go along with these ridiculous prices nowadays out of sheer principle.
My breakfast and lunch needs will typically cost me around £3-£4 if I prep and bring my own, vs £15-£20 at work for equivalent meals and snacks.
NoEntertainer3191@reddit
Agree- I feel so angry at myself when I don't make a packed lunch. I see how cheap I can get lunch so i don't waste money on an unenjoyable experience. Usually a £1 Greggs with o2 Priority!
Meal deals are so expensive and not inspiring. And then anywhere good is going on £20 for eating in or £10 takeaway!
SpaceCatSociety@reddit
Used to always intentionally support the small businesses near my office for lunches and coffees as there’s many. I’m sure it’s not my fault alone but many of the great cafes have closed down or are struggling. It’s a shame
Chernobyl_Coleslaw@reddit
I agree with this so much. I just prioritise lunches with good company, if I’m rushing to eat between meetings, a homemade lunch is great. Save the money & calories for socialising

CherryRoutine9397@reddit
For me it was small stuff that didn’t feel like much at the time but adds up fast. Things like grabbing a coffee out, random snacks, little convenience purchases. None of it felt expensive individually, but over a month it was way more than I realised.
Also eating out without thinking twice. Not even fancy places, just doing it often. Once you actually track it, you realise how quickly it stacks.
I didn’t cut everything out, just became more intentional. If I’m spending on something now, it’s because I actually want it, not just habit or convenience.
Funny thing is you don’t really miss most of it once you stop. I think about this kind of stuff a lot, just trying to get smarter with money without feeling like you’re cutting everything out.
Internal_Tip3975@reddit

emilicia@reddit
My brother is vegan, stopped drinking oat milk a long time ago unless it’s a seriously good deal. It just keeps going up and up. He’ll just drink soy instead but I just think it’s kinda sad he already had to give up dairy and now he can’t have a plant milk he actually enjoys
J0intAccount@reddit
Oat milk is one of the easiest things you can make!
If you've got the odd 30 minutes a week you can easily get a few litres stocked up.
emilicia@reddit
This is good to know! I’ll have to look into it

Sushi I love but now so expensive you get half what u did 2 years ago
aregularky@reddit
Yo Sushi do a too good to go bag in some places.
Jill4ChrisRed@reddit
I can attest to this, I work in a Yo Sushi at a Tesco and our TGTG bags are £7 and you will get at minimum £15-20 of food. Because we make fresh sushi daily and the company puts 24hrs on all sushi products to sell, you're guaranteed something decent.
Bigowl@reddit
Tonight’s dinner, £6.75 on too good to go (sushi daily inside Waitrose)
Jill4ChrisRed@reddit
Sushi daily are one of Yo!'s sister companies 🥰 same for Panku and whatever one Sainsbury's deals with. They're all under the same umbrella funnily enough.
Bigowl@reddit
Ahh!
Antique_Luck2633@reddit
i love sushi but I can't eat fish:( do you know if TGTG offers vegetarian?
WhatsThePlanPhil95@reddit
Vegetarian sushi?
Antique_Luck2633@reddit
same thing but with cucumber/avo/tofu instead of the fish
Better-Economist-432@reddit
yes, "sushi" refers to the rice
juulpo@reddit
On TGTG some places offer a vegetarian bag but if its not advertised then i wouldn’t count on it.
Jill4ChrisRed@reddit
It depends on the place, as it's usually a random grab bag, our branches usually let people choose because the whole point of TGTG is to reduce waste. We do veggie rolls, crunchy veggie rolls, a veggie bento called Plant Power, as well as serve Inaris, Seaweed Salad, Edamame and avocado hosumaki and cucumber hosumakis.
If you can eat chicken I'd say 50% if what we sell is chicken based, then 40% fish then 10% veggie options.
Some branches will have pumpkin katsu curry bowls aswell :)
I_SHAG_REDHEADS@reddit
I used to live with some Polish lads (Multi occupancy house) who all worked together at Yo Sushi, that would bring back heaps every night. I'm glad too good to go wasn't around back then lol.

Have you thought about making it yourself? I love sushi and just made it for myself for the first time yesterday. I was pretty shit at rolling it but it was super tasty. Much cheaper and you can make way more!
KaleidoscopeHot9265@reddit

thepeoplesfood@reddit

Cakeo@reddit
Sushi grade is a marketing term and not regulated, it doesn't legally mean anything.
Effective-Cobbler333@reddit

samdug123@reddit
sushi is super cheap and easy to make. it seems inaccessible but really its very simple ingredients. the rice is easy and cheap to make, then filling is up to you.
Sussurator@reddit
Yep, the filing is cheap too, all you need is a string, a line and a handful of worms.
WhatsThePlanPhil95@reddit
You also need the bamboo roller thing
samdug123@reddit
kinda but clingfilm will work. and they are cheap at charity shops
twiggymarron@reddit
Yeah we used to get sushi a lot but we have 4 children and my partner only orders sashimi for himself so not doable for all of us now!

I'd rather starve than give up real butter.
Difficult_Tea6136@reddit
Real butter isn’t mad expensive. I use less than the spreads and it’s much much much tastier
Mr_Bruce_Duce@reddit
Just so hard to spread - unless I’m missing out on a trick to do it easier.
condosovarios@reddit
Butter dish out of the fridge.
Mevaboo@reddit
I do this but my house is too damn cold and it still won’t spread
Special_Artichoke@reddit
Same rules as basil, pop it on a sunny window ledge!
Difficult_Tea6136@reddit
Personally, I wouldn't leave a butter dish in direct sunlight for very long. You just increase the risk of it going rancid.
smalbluething@reddit
I have this problem too, a butter dish has helped but I've got quite used to work sandwiches with clumps of butter
UsuallyWhirlwind@reddit
Give it a quick 10s blast in the microwave OR heat up the knife by running under hot water or hold over the gas burner for a few seconds, helps spread the butter
bsnimunf@reddit
If you don't want to do this just slice it very thinly with a sharp knife. Put the thin slice where you want it. If its toast spread it straight away. Anything else you can spread it in 60 seconds
Difficult_Tea6136@reddit
Exactly. Cut enough for the week, put it in the dish, use it in a day on mash, repeat
Dnny10bns@reddit
Warm a knife on the hob. Instant warm butter. Just don't go mad. 😂
Mr_Bruce_Duce@reddit
This is what I was after! Great idea!!
Dnny10bns@reddit
My house is too cold most of the year. This method is the best I've found. It's great down to the last of it then I'll buy a new block and use what's left for frying eggs or bread for sandwiches.

bill_end@reddit
Leave it on the side, not in the fridge. It should last over a week unless it's really hot weather.
If it's still too hard, you can blast it in the microwave, just a few seconds at a time because it does go rapidly from too hard to too melted
thekittysays@reddit
Leave it out of the fridge
OneWeirdTrick@reddit
Salted butter can be out of the fridge without going off for ~2 weeks. My parents always put it back in the fridge for some reason.
Former-Let-2855@reddit
I went on holiday for 10 days and managed to over zealously switch the fridge off as I was switching off appliances and the only thing that survived unscathed was the butter and cheese! (and it was a hot hot London summer, but they were in the fridge so stayed a little cool at least)
BamberGasgroin@reddit
Cupboard butter doesn't go off outside of the fridge until you notice it's gone off.
OneWeirdTrick@reddit
Legally it's still usable exactly 1 time after you notice
Amazing-Heron-105@reddit

anyone who buys brand name butter in the UK is an idiot. It's all the same stuff
Amazing-Heron-105@reddit
I think real butter is healthier too
bill_end@reddit
Indeed. All the bollocks of the 80s/90s where fat was victimised resulted in so many ultra processed low fat foods full of sugar and other additives.
A reasonable amount of natural fat is important for a healthy diet. Plus, alongside protein it makes you satiated so you're less likely to overeat.

Olive oil, on the other hand, it was either give it or learn how to live on small amounts of olive oil
Dnny10bns@reddit
I know what you mean. When we had those price hikes a while back it was a nightmare. I'm a fan. I use it in curries because of inflammation. So much better, but it's still 150ml per curry.
Purple_Original_4578@reddit
Oh does it help? Coconut oil for curry, for me... It's inflation vs inflammation huh! Turmeric for inflammation though ❤️ that stuff must be way cheaper than its value still. I am conflicted between paying what things are worth, which I can't afford, and wanting to be able to afford the cheap spoils of global markets 😭
Dnny10bns@reddit
It's certainly easier on the joints. I know what you mean. Somethings, you just have to bite the bullet. Also constantly watching the pennies.

Going out for meals with my partner. Its not that we can't afford to, but with the quality of restaurant food going down it just doesn't feel like its worth to get an average plate of food and pay £15-£20 for it. We'd rather sit in our garden, cook or BBQ some food that we know we like and have it cost a third of the restaurants bill.

No_Doubt_About_That@reddit
You often get better ingredients in supermarket own brand stuff anyway.
Fish being one example compared to Birds Eye.

The only brand I get these days is Branston Pickles and that's mainly because the 720g jars turn up on special offer at ~£2.35 a few times a year and the jars keep well.

Most of it is no better than the supermarket / cheaper brands anyway, things like Heinz baked beans are actually the worst beans even compared to the cheapest supermarket ones I think.

£54 for my wife and I
Large Popcorn, Drink and Ticket each.
Great film, but not worth £54 quid. £8.99 for a large Popcorn.
No_Doubt_About_That@reddit
Take your own popcorn in - nobody cares as long as you’re still quiet with it and not rustling the bag.
A supermarket bag of even the fanciest popcorn like Joe and Seph’s is still significantly cheaper.
Baby8227@reddit
We have an Astoria cinema nearby and it’s fab. Cheap entry and reasonable snacks. Can take 2 kids and 2 adults with snacks for £40.
Friendly_Yak_2713@reddit
Choosing literally the most expensive way to visit a cinema then complaining about cost is mental.
Almost as bad as the guy below pretending coffee is £6.
The only reason "luxe" versions of cinemas now exist is because people will regularly choose to spend more than a regular ticket costs. Not very cost of livingy....
Lebowski85@reddit
The fact Is that is what the cinema charges. It's too expensive.
There are of course hacks but those are literally the prices the cinema charges
Friendly_Yak_2713@reddit
How is that a fact? The way you tell something is too expensive is people don't pay the price.
In this case people regularly to choose this option over a very similar cheaper substitute (regular cinema/seats and bringing own snacks)
bomchikawowow@reddit
Holy shit. Why aren't you sneaking in your own snacks??
Lebowski85@reddit
We usually would but didn't on this occasion.
The point is these are the prices the cinema actually charges
bomchikawowow@reddit
Just because they charge that doesn't mean anyone's obligated to pay. You can also buy a £200 bottle of wine in a restaurant or a £99 steak, you *chose* to pay £54.
Lebowski85@reddit
Isn't this the whole point of the thread?
"What luxury is too expensive now?"
The only 'extra' we paid would be the £4 to upgrade our seats. Otherwise we paid the standard price for everything.
As stated multiple times on this thread, I'm fully aware there are cost saving measures but on this occasion it was an impulsive decision to go and that is what it cost, which is ludicrous

That's crazy! I went to see the same film and used 2 tickets on my picturehouse membership, took leftover cake in and bought discounted coffee. Total £11 with parking. We often use the free sky tickets too for vue.
BoysenberryTiny8138@reddit
Just buy a big af cheap Chinese TV, go to goojara and watch whatever you want, at some point you are enabling all these crappy companies to keep the price that way because it’s you that enable it.
Friendly_Yak_2713@reddit
Why are cinemas crappy companies? It's not like they are monopolistic or goujing on prices of essential items. Margins are pretty thin on a corporate level. Their costs have gone up (wages, electricity etc) while people are showing demand for more premium product (luxury seats, smaller showings, food brought to seat).
Not sure what you think the companies are doing that is bad....
Ok-Humor-5672@reddit
That is mental, but the cinema doesn't have to be that expensive. You can find offers all the time for tickets and just bring your own snacks. I go by myself a few times a year to see the films I want to see and I usually get the ticket for less than £10 and bring in some treats and a drink from the shop. Like £12 all in.
My work benefits actually does £8 tickets Sunday to Thursday, saw bone temple and just took a pop from the fridge. £50+ isn't the price the cinema has to be, that's the "I just couldn't be fucked to do it cheaper and wanted to go to the cinema" price. It's like dominoes pizza.
fire-wannabe@reddit
Get a club Lloyds account.
Each month pay £2000 in and £2000 back to.your main account. That gets you 6 tickets a year.
Partner can do the same
Ok-Humor-5672@reddit
Yeah I have one, I just get my salary paid in, use it for Disney + for this kids.
Lebowski85@reddit
Oh yeah I know all the tricks. On this occasion it was an impromptu trip and I didn't mind splashing out as we get out like once a year. We did get premium luxe seats etc and got large snacks and drinks each. Shouldn't ever cost £54 though, madness
Amazing-Heron-105@reddit
I think the better seats and screen (if it's available) is worth paying for. It's only a few quid. The drinks and snacks can get fucked tho.
KELVALL@reddit
Always take your own food and drinks! Popcorn is £1 a bag.
guareber@reddit
Absolutely worth £54 quid. Paid that much to see it at the BFI IMAX, no snacks.
jacquetpotato@reddit
I don’t book tickets for anything nowadays without first scouring the internet for deals and voucher codes (usually they don’t apply at weekends though so you were trapped). £54 is crazy but I hope you enjoyed your child free afternoon!
Lebowski85@reddit
It was lovely thanks. Very enjoyable film. Very much a throwback to those slightly cheesy family blockbusters from the 90s. I'd recommend it in the cinema as some of the visuals are first class

Amazing-Heron-105@reddit
Yep I went to the cinema recently for the first time in a very long time and I foolishly bought a drink at the cinema. It was £6! for a Coke. I will take my own drink with me next time cuz I was able to take my backpack in without any fuss.
mangocheezecakee@reddit
Whaaaaat! It's £4.99 per ticket at my local vue. Odeon is more expensive but a monthly pass is only £17 which is worth it if you go weekly. I just bring in my own food and drink

MandelbrotFace@reddit
By my maths, taking the approx wholesale price of popcorn (and excluding flavouring and preparing), that's 56 times more expensive than buying yourself. Factoring the other costs in they're easily making 3,500% markup on popcorn. That's crazy
OptionalQuality789@reddit
My partner and I saw it for £12 for both of us. Meerkat Tuesdays.
craftyorca135@reddit
Really? I get 3 tickets for £12 each, then £6 for a popcorn and £2 for a drink. If I was proper being frugal I'd buy things in advance as well.
haaiiychii@reddit
That's crazy, I get a work discount and get 2 tickets for about 12 quid. Take in my own £1 popcorn from Tesco and my own drink, and go to the Odeon recliner screens, somehow works on the cheap ticket vouchers.
Altruistic-Wing-2715@reddit
We don’t watch a film without meerkat movies and avoid snacks altogether. First world problems eh…
mistakenforzen@reddit
It's crazy how many people still think they are breaking the rules by bringing in their own snacks. This used to be the case years ago, but nearly all major cinema chains now have it explicitly in their terms that bringing in your own (cold) snacks and (non alcoholic) drinks is fine.
Of course, cinemas are struggling, so if you think you can afford their popcorn and coke, you should buy it. But otherwise, they're just happy to have you there.

Takeaway pizzas; with four of us it was getting silly now there are more like four full portions to buy. I have upped my home ‘Za game now and the expense can’t be justified.
zwifter11@reddit
Not only has my favourite pizza takeaway put up their prices (2 or 3 times) but they have changed the ingredients in the dough. The pizza base now tastes terrible, it literally tastes cheap.
It’s a false economy for them. They’ve gone from my favourite takeaway that I regularly visited to a place I’ve gave up on.
Careless_Soup_109@reddit
Re cost of takeaway pizzas , it's more that the cost of being lazy has heavily increased.
zwifter11@reddit
I now look at the price of crisps and chocolate bars in the shops and think “No, they’re not worth that price”.
The worst was a packet of peanuts that must have contained 10 nuts. I’m not willing to pay that much for shrinkflation.
Smart-Isopod9263@reddit
Honestly the feeling of safety and comfort is something I feel like I have to give up regularly due to the cost of living crisis. I have PTSD, have a stress induced chest condition and am neurodivergent. Often I really rely on being able to access things like an uber here and there and easy food/spaces to rest to prevent my mobility being affected or my mental health to really spiral. It’s one of the things that allows me to work every day. To be actively social. To function like a human being - yet PIP says because I can walk I don’t need any help and support. It’s why so many people in a situation like mine turn to all sorts of unhealthy coping mechanisms. I don’t know if I would count this as a “luxury” necessarily, but damn it does feel like that sometimes

3 meals a day, down to two now
Garden-Rose-8380@reddit
You may want to look at the Olio app or Too Good to Go both are about minimising commercial food waste to landfill.
rusticus_autisticus@reddit
Olio used to really help with the horrors of supermarket food becoming unaffordable, but i can't remember the last time i checked it and it wasn't just stale bread.
It used to be good for toiletries or the odd lamp / blender / kettle etc if a household item broke, but sin ce Olio introduced the 'for sale' section, people are trying to sell their half used nivea tub for a fiver, or a lamp with no bulb and a broken plug for £20.
CraftBeerFomo@reddit
And then you just end up eating a bag of leftover cakes from Greggs everynight for dinner, lovely.
UuusernameWith4Us@reddit
If you're really hard up you're better off learning to cook and using cheap ingredients. The apps mostly have processed stuff on reduction so still not cheap.
KingKhram@reddit

Sorry you're struggling. I never managed 3 meals a day myself in terms of feeling too full if I did, but it sucks to see your living standards decline. Our community also collects food about to go off from supermarkets, there's always collections in our area for stuff like that. As much as I hate Facebook, I stay on it for the local groups for stuff like that. And all the drama is entertaining too!
Maleficent_Day_3869@reddit (OP)
i get lunch for free at work and skip breakfast so i really only pay for one meal a day. i’m incredibly blessed, i know
bars_and_plates@reddit
I haven't had to give up anything because I've always lived far below my means.
Having said that there are lots of things that I have either given up or significantly reduced simply because they feel like rip-offs now.
It's hard to put my finger on, but essentially, it used to feel like most prices in shops were competitive. They might be high or low but it was correlated to the actual production cost of the item somewhat.
Now it feels as if there's a lot of clever stuff going on, like the supermarkets have worked out that you can just make every impulse buy "a few quid" because that's the threshold that most people use.
EmilyWallArtwork@reddit

Takeways and eating out at restaurants, even the cheap pub chains now im spending 40 quid for two meals and two drinks.
Not given up but ive learned to be more savvy about my choices for meats, we used to buy just pork loin steaks and similar things, im not buying big joints of meat and cutting them in half and freezing them, cooking one half and then we have prepared meats for the next few days.
I dont get lunches very often while im out working, I cant justify a £10 meal when I have frozen meals at home that cost £2 each.
Ive also given up smoking and started vaping instead a 50g pouch that lasted me a week and a bit was costing roughly £42
I got a decent vape for £30 and I buy 2x 100ml liquid bottles for £20 and they last me nearly 2 months.
But ive now found out they are massively increasing duty/tax on liquids in october. So guess im just gonna start rolling up the hay from my guinea pigs feed and start smoking that.

Cold drink from the office vending machine. I used to treat myself to a cold bottle of Pepsi Max twice, maybe three times a week at the office vending machine in the break room. LegitimatePieMonster@reddit
Try either Veet hot wax that you put in the microwave. I use the end of a pair or tweezers for accuracy on eyebrows.
Or...
The Flawless Brows hair remover which is like a mini shaver. £15 from Boots.
For eyelash and eyebrow dye, I use Refectocil which is what many of the salons use. You can't buy it retail but there's plenty of online salon suppliers you can get it from. For those of you with blonde eyebrows definitely don't go for anything more than light brown as a starting point as colour tends to take well on blonde hair. For eyelashes do one at a time and use baseline and a pad under your eye to prevent running. Usual caveat - do a patch test.
On salon waxes, the last time I got my tash done I ended up with a rash that only went away with antibiotics. It occurred to me that they're using the same pot for lots of people and I might have picked it up there. So for me the DIY Veet hot wax is more hygienic.

If you've set up your life around not driving (live with good public transport, can walk/bus/train commute) there's not a massive benefit. i’m lucky that public transport is decent where i live, i can pretty much get anywhere. i just hate how long it takes sometimes because of all the extra stops. recently i visited a friend who just moved away and the bus ride was an hour and a half. she dropped me home on the way back and the drive was only 25 minutes. an hour just gone like that
plus there’s the minor annoyances like the general public, having to stand after a long day, buses being late when the weather is shit and missing the bus. not to mention having to get ubers if i need to travel at night because buses don’t feel safe past a certain time

My husband's aunt has a small yard in the middle of the countryside and yesterday, when I was helping her feed her horses, she kept commenting how quiet the road was "for an Easter Sunday". I told her that all the people who would be driving home from Sunday lunch, or going on their countryside afternoon drive, simply don't have the cash to support those activities any longer.

Takeaway has completely gone from my budget. Everyday I get emails from deliveroo and ubereats. Can't afford it anymore though, too expensive.
CraftBeerFomo@reddit
I think about getting one every couple of weeks, and often go online and start looking at what I might want, until I see what its going to cost and then I change my mind.
Most of the time even just the food seems too expensive but even when that seems reasonable the service fees, delivery charges, and all these extra charges that never used to exist like places adding "small order fees" and the like now take the total price to the point where I just couldn't bring myself to buy it.
Psychological-Bag272@reddit
Same. I can kind of accept the food cost but all the extra fees have pissed me off so much.
Friendly_Yak_2713@reddit
You know you can pick the food up yourself?
CraftBeerFomo@reddit
No, no one knew that. We all thought it was mandatory to get it delivered.
There are lots of situations though where someone might not want or be able to pick it up...they don't drive, the takeaway is too far away, they've had a long day and don't want to go back out, they are busy, they are tired and trying to just relax etc etc etc.
ConnectPreference166@reddit

I used to go to the hairdresser every six to twelve months or so. Even well before the CoLC I found it infuriating to have to spend that much money on something I don't even enjoy. Thankfully I realised that the best cut on me is a fairly straightforward bob which is easily sorted at home with the kitchen scissors. This was pushed partly by the CoLC but also my general stubbornness, of course. I'm never going back to the hairdresser at this point, I don't like spending either time or money on it and frankly I am getting more compliments now than I ever did before.
Apart from that we haven't changed much, but that is because I have always baked bread, cooked my meals from scratch, made my own lunches to bring, rarely buy food on the go, don't have any subscriptions, no club or gym memberships, no frivolous self care habits or otherwise. My most outrageous hobbies are making clothes which, whilst expensive, also kind of pays off in the end.
I grew up poor, I am poor now, and I don't expect that to change. So I just do what I've always done as that's all I know to do. As long as I'm not hungry and in a cardboard box on the street, I'll probably be fine.
The worst part about these conversations is that people don't generally understand the concept of not being able to cut back on anything because you never lived in a way that allowed excesses in the first place. How do you cut back on holidays when you never had one? 🙃

A small luxury I had to give up due to the cost of living crisis is getting the bus home from work. I now walk it home from my job Which takes me a hour to do just under 2 mile walk. I struggle at times because I have heart disease but £1.75 x 5 = £8.75 savings which I then use at a market afternoon on a Saturday as the fruit and veg bowls are cheaper due to the closure on the weekends. Or I'll buy loads of yellow sticker food to freeze to take to work.
FormalLeadership2109@reddit
I do this to save £12. 50 a week as the bus is £2.50 a pop. but it takes me just over 1 hour to do 3.7 miles 😅. I will also start cycling it once I've fixed my bike.

Restaurant meals. Not just the cost of living, but I’m recently separated from my husband and have sole custody of our daughter, so it’s just not viable at the moment. We ate at prezzo recently but that’s because I had a £20 gift card from my car insurance renewal and a 2 for 1 coupon. Even when we were living as a family, we really noticed the increase in the cost of a basic 2 course restaurant meal for 3. Easily 1/3 higher than it was pre-covid and I’m a vegetarian so the cost of my food is often lower than their’s anyway.

FormalLeadership2109@reddit
Back when I used to do my nails around 2018 it was £24 for a fresh acrylic set and £16 for infill. It's now £38 for fresh set and £28 for infill 🥹. I only do normal polish at home or stick ons now, can't imagine paying those prices.
Strange_Pumpkin9225@reddit
But that's because salons have running costs that have increased crazily too so we have no choice but to increase prices.
Maleficent_Day_3869@reddit (OP)
i completely understand that. i’m not blaming the salon, you guys are struggling like the rest of us. i’m blaming the people that are responsible for making wages stagnant while making the cost of everything go insane
Streathamite@reddit
Tbf, part of the reason for the salon increase is because minimum wage has been far from stagnant for a few years. It’s increased significantly as has employers NI costs which is a large part of the reason that what were previously small luxuries for those on middle incomes are now unaffordable
Maleficent_Day_3869@reddit (OP)
i don’t think that’s fair. i’m on just a bit more than minimum wage and it’s nowhere near enough. it may have increased but it’s still nothing compared to the income needed to survive. the only reason i was ever able to afford those little luxuries was because i lived at home then
milscl@reddit

I'm being very careful about where I go for meals out. Recently sat down at a restaurant, saw the menu was small plates and likely to cost like £30pp plus service and we walked out.
Went to Wahaca a few weeks ago and had 3 tapas that cost £25 and they were all veggie, including a "new" butternut squash dish which consisted of literally a chunk of squash with a bit of grilling sitting in a pool of sauce. Haven't been to Wahaca for years. I couldn't believe it, I felt so ripped off.
I don't mind paying a bit more occasionally for a meal out, but the quantity and quality seems to have gone down. A few years ago you could get a meal for £20. I was on a lower salary and it didn't feel as bad. Even the chains are ridiculous prices now.

Haircuts are nuts now, even as a bloke. A (slightly dodgy) skinfade could be had for about £15 2 or 3 years back, could just about afford to get a trim every 3 weeks or so. At my regular barbers its now pushing £25. Limiting myself to 1 cut a month now.
nerddddd42@reddit
I've been doing my own for a few years now, clippers aren't too expensive, takes some practice to do a nice skin fade on yourself, but pretty easy to take it short on the sides and blend in to the top.
Strange_Pumpkin9225@reddit
Yeah, our running costs have gone right up so unfortunately that means increasing prices.
cellardooorr@reddit
I never liked spending money on things I could do without, so I just keep on budgeting and saving. I buy clothes and books/jigsaw puzzles/tools second hand/on ebay. I mend my clothes/socks instead of binning them. I grow veg and fruits, bake bread, make ice-cream etc. Never liked going out so that's not a problem, I'd rather make myself a proper meal from scratch and watch movies on my computer. I painted my walls and tiled my bathroom (not perfect but hey, it's done). I unblock drains and clean the gutters.
I think being a xennial from ex soviet block prepared me for any crisis 🤷🏻♀️

My comedy budget has pretty much dried up. I used to go two or three times a week, sometimes more particularly in the run up to Edinburgh, to above-a-pub gigs, new material nights, and the occasional proper show but I've cut back to doing so maybe once every month or two. £5+ a pop for a ticket plus transport adds up and now gets spent on more important things like household bills.

Days out have suffered most. Looked up a local farm that we used to go to semi regularly. It probably used to cost £25 for a family of 4; it was close to £80 today. Not including any sort of food, drinks, etc
Same for meals. Just too expensive.
Upbeat-Marzipan1122@reddit
We went to a farm local to us before we had my little girl and it used to be under £10 including the carrot for the animals. Once we had my little girl it went up a little bit to just over £10. It’s one of my favourite things to do and it was always cheaper in comparison to other places. We went a few weeks back and it was closer to £40. My little girl is only 2 so it’s gone up so much in such a short space of time. We won’t be going back again.

You know cost of living is fucked if richy rich over here can’t get a yacht charter when they fancy it anymore.
I’m poor but hired a personal speedboat for myself and my partner whilst in Greece for the day several years ago as a treat, and the cost of fuel was more than the boat! With today’s fuel prices I couldn’t imagine how costly hiring a boat would be.
GeoAnchoa@reddit
Well yes. Everyone’s small luxuries they have to give up on will differ person to person.
GrahamGreed@reddit
Same with hiring a private jet. It's much more economical to just fly business class or even first class than hiring a smaller plane that can't fly as far. 😉
GeoAnchoa@reddit
The difference is private jet pricing has always been absurd, business and first class aeroplane tickets have become a bit expensive nowadays.

Chocolate and bags of sweets in general.
Given how rubbish chocolate is now becoming I can't justify spending my money on it, I did end up with 6 easter eggs via family/friends that I'll try and make last though, then we have just sweets like Jelly Babies and the like, there are so few in the bags now I just don't bother.
Guess cost of living is inadvertently making me healthier? Lol.

I am now starting to think twice about driving somewhere, 6 weeks ago I did not give a shit. I would jump in the car and do a 70 mile round trip without much though except for the time.
But right now I’m questioning if I want to spend that fuel, I’m not up against it financially just life has hit a really nice balance in the last 12 months. Savings are good, affording all the things we want to do etc just the cost of fuel can fuck off. The most annoying thing being there is nothing anyone can do about it except for the moron who caused the fuel shock.

Spontaneous teas out.
We first moved to the area we now live in around 7 years ago. Until maybe 2022 a local pub did 2 courses (carvery and dessert) for £12 as an early bird (before 7pm) deal. It's now £24.
Likewise in a similar time frame the Italian that did three courses off a set menu Monday to Friday for £14 has gone upto £27.
Before the increase we'd eat out because we didn't fancy what was in at home, or just wanted a random treat tea. Now it just tends to be much rarer occasions we'll eat out.
There's an Indian we like which is poppadoms with sauces, starter, main with either chips/nan/rice. It's still very good value at £14 per person. Always busy in the week and rammed weekends. To be honest I think it's that price to get people in the door, as I reckon most of their takings and profits is made off customer's bar bills (£6.50 pint of lager, £4.50 pint of Coke).

To be honest, nothing really. But that’s simply because we’ve always lived below our means, we just don’t save as much as we used to. My wife was talking about not getting her nails done, but that’s literally the only “extravagant” thing she regularly spends money on so I told her not to be daft. Most of our hobbies revolve around the garden and the outdoors which both cost very little. Having an EV helps a lot, we can drive pretty much wherever we want without thinking about it.
