Give everybody a 10mg pill of Adderall

When people with ADHD take Adderall it produces a calming effect, when people without ADHD take it causes euphoria, high energy, and anxiety. Given these differences, giving everyone 10 mg of Adderall would be an easy way of discovering who has ADHD.
mnimatt@reddit
This is basically a myth, or at the very least a misunderstanding, and spreading it can cause people who may benefit from ADHD treatment to think they don't have it because stimulants don't necessarily 'calm' them.
CrackedP0t@reddit
It can definitely calm me down. Sometimes I wake up, take my Vyvanse, and sleep for 4 more hours because my brain stops spinning lmao. Some people with intense ADHD take low dose Adderall every night to fall asleep!
mnimatt@reddit
I definitely get sleepy when I take it in the morning if I didn't sleep much the night before, but it isn't a guaranteed thing that happens every time, and it doesn't mean you don't have ADHD if it doesn't happen to you.
ponakka@reddit
Also it is insane that estrogen decides how well the oxitocin receptors work, if estrogen is low receptors accept less oxitocin, while on high estrogen, they really boost the intake.
5park2ez@reddit
No because WHY did I not know this?!? This explains so much...
Women's healthcare is a fucking disgrace
ponakka@reddit
I have so many cis woman friends who have had their mind blown about menopausal problems and adhd/estrogen link when i have been going through hrt and being into my special intrest rabbit hole. Even the doctors responsible for my hrt have really insane thought patterns. at least in my country the basic doctor studies spesifically womens diseases only for two days.
mysentancesstart-w-u@reddit
That's really interesting. Sauce so I can read more?
ponakka@reddit
There is internet full of documents, but this is adhd + estrogen + dopamin links. https://www.drlouisenewson.co.uk/knowledge/adhd-and-hormones-in-women
CrackedP0t@reddit
Yeah, it varies a lot and it's definitely not guaranteed! It happens for enough people that I wouldn't call it a "myth" though.
mnimatt@reddit
I threw in the word basically lol. Maybe I shouldn't have said myth at all, but I really don't believe it's good to spread the phenomenon like it's universal, or really all that common place. People talk about it like it's a binary switch, and that stimulants have opposite effects on people depending on if they have ADHD or not. That is essentially a myth.
TechieAD@reddit
yeah I remember getting on Vyvanse for the first time and then 2 hours later passing the fuck out. It's random but damn it makes me sleepy sometimes
pWaveShadowZone@reddit
Thank you!
Own_Alternative_9671@reddit
People with ADHD can tweak the fuck out on stimulants they just have to take a lot more for the same effect. If you gave everybody adderall, people with ADHD who are poor metabolizers or sensitive to adderrall will still get the talkative, euphoric effects. Usually the solution for these people clinically more often than not ends up being a dose reduction until their tolerance climbs and that doesn't happen anymore.
visk0n3@reddit
Lame, give everybody 200ug of lsd and now we're talking.
Prize_Macaroon_2089@reddit
Real lol, specifically politicians, though I wonder if they’d truly feel the weight of their actions or they’re so far up their own posh bubble that it’d reinforce their existing beliefs…

35mg vaporized N,N-DMT for all
happycabinsong@reddit
then everyone can figure out who's real and who's actually a demon trying to steal your face
Confused_AF_Help@reddit
Vietnamese with ADHD here. A double cup of Vietnamese drip robusta coffee does the same as a low dose of Adderall.
finiterabbit@reddit
All caffeine cracks me out and makes me paranoid.
lalaland1210@reddit
I don’t have adhd but when I tried my partner’s pill once, on his imsistence, few years ago, it was so weird.
Too zoned in, not many thoughts, everything was way too slow. Did not like it. But yeah, I guess you could say it had a calming effect on a non ADHD person so this theory doesn’t work.
gsquaredbotics@reddit
Um... are you sure that you don't have ADHD?
lalaland1210@reddit
Uh doesn’t seem so? Like I’ve gotten to know so much about it since a couple of years of being with my partner & there may be one or two things here and there that were similar but that can be .. being human mixed with some childhood stuff?
Idk 🥲
I don’t get too many thoughts flooding me at once in my head at any point. Just very regular amount. With the pill it felt like I was in total freeze mode & I did not like it one bit. Idkkkk
Corandoe@reddit
would also be an easy way to discover who has the addiction gene
Full-Blueberry-6715@reddit
Wouldn't recommend it. They no longer work- sugar pills.
Moblin81@reddit
If it was that simple college students wouldn’t constantly be trying to buy adderall under the table. They would just get a prescription. Most people, ADHD or not will be more focused on adderall so plenty of neurotypical students would happily claim they need it.
RyeOnTheRocksNH@reddit
I saw somewhere that they studied college misuse and did not see any improvements is test scores for those kids tying it under the table.
LysergioXandex@reddit
I don’t believe those studies. I think the tests they run are contrived to reach the “interesting” conclusion they want. And the context of the experiment probably doesn’t really match reality.
RyeOnTheRocksNH@reddit
Reality doesn’t require your belief.
LysergioXandex@reddit
Also, a “study” you “saw somewhere” doesn’t define reality 🙄
Spinner23@reddit
We would have to see what they controlled for in the study.
Also a really REALLY tough study to conduct
It makes sense to start out as skeptic for this
LysergioXandex@reddit
Adding to the crowd of voices telling you this is a myth.
If it worked like that, ADHD would be fast and cheap to diagnose. Give someone 40 mg of amphetamine and if they can sit still, they must have ADHD?
Instead, diagnosing ADHD is one of the most expensive and time consuming of all the common psychiatric disorders.
Playcrackersthesky@reddit
I have ADHD, I still can’t tolerate stimulants. This is a horrendous idea.
PrincessPessimist@reddit
Fun fact, trying adderall in college was how I learned I wasnt ADHD
fuck_peeps_not_sheep@reddit
It just made me feel vaguely sick ill be honest
somecow@reddit
Naaah, that shit made me crazy, to the point of hallucinating. And very much have ADD. Diagnosis by medication is never a good idea.
myusernameblabla@reddit
We would certainly get good data on unexpected drug interactions.
DarkEsotericFeline@reddit
Plenty of people with ADHD who have undiagnosed bipolar, as well as those with treatment resistant bipolar, would fail to be discovered with this experiment. So would many people with ADHD and a co-occurring anxiety disorder that is not the result of untreated ADHD. Would miss a lot of people with ADHD who would do better on non-stimulant medication or from just using non-medication strategies of management.
Learntoshuffle@reddit
Germany tried getting their entire society hooked on amphetamines. It didn’t go well.
Carrieconfetti@reddit
Yeah they made the wrong kind of concentration camps
Charkid17@reddit (OP)
They used it in an addictive way, suggesting that every German should take one every night. My suggestion is a one time, low dosage use.
happycabinsong@reddit
an amphetamine every night? did they not want people to sleep?
RespectableLurker555@reddit
More time to read Mein Kampf
Learntoshuffle@reddit
Even a low dose can get people hooked. This Strat would just cause a spike in addiction, a reduction in emotional intelligence, and an overall shittier experience. Also, people would heart conditions would collapse.
vonarchimboldi@reddit
not really as someone who has adhd, it’s not calming to take amphetamine adhd meds, it just helps you lock down on doing things.
when you have it, it’s still a good feeling and can def be addictive, but it helps you not have massive executive dysfunction
EvieSunKissed@reddit
Congrats, you just created the world's most questionable group project with side effects. People without ADHD don't all react the same either.
fastingslowlee@reddit
I have adhd and adderall still gave me anxiety and ruined my sleep. Stop with the ignorant generalizations.
swayedsuede@reddit
Even the guy who just took enough to end himself -10mg?
Impressive_Ad_1675@reddit
I had a shit ton of papers to go through at home and file them. After years of procrastination I took an adderall I got from a friend and it was a breeze to do the job.
HCdeletedmyemails@reddit
"ADHD" is marketing. It isn't a real thing.
trashpandorasbox@reddit
Giving everyone stimulants is a bad idea. Even in low doses they can be very addictive. However, places whose water supply is naturally higher in lithium (we are talking very small amounts of it nowhere near a clinical dose) have some real health improvements including lower suicide rates, lower crime, and potentially even lower onset of dementia. Lithium supplementation could (note, could a lot more study is needed) have mental health benefits. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32716281/#:~:text=Naturally%20occurring%20lithium%20in%20drinking%20water%20may%20have%20the%20potential,misuse%20and%20risk%20of%20suicide.
warp_wizard@reddit
This is a weird oversimplification that I wish we would stop perpetuating. It was probably created to deter illicit use, or to combat the stigma of amphetamine use for medicated people, but it's not grounded in observable reality.
pluto_pluto_pluto_@reddit
It calms hyperactivity in ADHD, but some people with ADHD don't have much hyperactivity to begin with. Adderall makes everyone, ADHD or not, focus better. And it makes it easier for everyone to get more stuff done. Someone taking Adderall and saying they focused better on it and got more stuff done does not mean they have ADHD.
