How far away was your high school growing up?

And did you take the bus, car, walk, bike, etc?
Was the commute a challenge with academics and other activities?
FireflyEvie@reddit
I drove the 10 miles in spring and fall. In the winter I would take my snowmobile across the frozen lake and that cut it down to about 5 miles. I did take my sled dog team one day just to be extra weird.
EastTXJosh@reddit
High school was 2 miles exactly from house. I drove my car. I don't know anyone that walked to school. There was even a few folks that lived right across the street from the school, and some behind, and they all drove their cars.
pir8salt@reddit
I was a mile and a half, could count how many times I walked on one hand, biked on both. But yeah, there was a guy who lived 2 doors down, and drove to school. Always thought that was odd, cause he would walk home for breaks/before sports

This sub is turning into Facebook with all these engagement traps.
ihatecatboys@reddit
I loved this sub but lately I'm hitting a wall with it alongside all of Reddit really. Between the polls, the "hey remember this massive cultural moment that everyone experienced but I'm going to act like it didn't" and the endless reposts of the same jokes and nostalgia bullshit littered across social media I just think I'm getting to old and grumpy to enjoy it anymore. That and I'm tired of Zoomers farming our memories for content creation, which is half of the posts on this sub now. I'll go back to yelling from my lawn now.
Verbull710@reddit
Fine fine but have you had your colonoscopy
ihatecatboys@reddit
Don't worry I'll be fine. Goonies never say die when drinking from the water hose while my back hurts and I don't watch space shuttle launches. Also do you remember this little thing called Nintendo? What a memory unlock!
Verbull710@reddit
Literally right now in our hotel
ihatecatboys@reddit
Lol, classic.
Corkwell@reddit
I just came looking for the classic “up hill both ways barefoot in the snow and rain…” comment. Didn’t find one so this shits wack.
Twoslot@reddit
It seems all of reddit. At least I just started noticing. What's the shtick? What does reddit engagement get you? Can you make money asking people about a more obscure Ghostbusters quote than "this man has no dick" ?
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
It was 5 miles, and yes I walked there and back sometimes. 😂
Apprehensive_Map64@reddit
60 miles away. The bus took an hour and a half each way. It was NW Ontario so in winter we got on and off the bus in darkness.
RanklesTheOtter@reddit
Walking distance but still like a mile up a big ass hill so I took the bus to get to school in the morning, but walked home. 😂
buckut@reddit
like half a mile maybe. i rode my bike errday, less the weather sucked then my dad would drive me and the bike to school n id just hope it was nice out for the ride home lol. i rode home for lunch too, less it was raining.
EIO_tripletmom@reddit
Almost 6 miles away and impossible to walk from my area, so mostly I rode the bus. So stupid that a couple of years after I graduated they built a larger high school even further south instead of building a north high school for the county. The kids who don’t live in one of the independent city districts in the north part of the county are even further away than I was. I specifically moved to one of those independent districts when I had kids.
mstermind@reddit
I either walked or, when I felt lazy, took the tram one stop.
zoobernut@reddit
My highschool was 28 miles away. I drove with my dad every day since he owned a restaurant near the high school then later drove myself as soon as I turned 16.
AnonymousIdentityMan@reddit
1 mile.
Global-Jury8810@reddit
The house I was living in did initially have access to a bus route for school, but when we moved to another town, they simply allowed me to finish, even though the move would have had me transferred to another school, they decided that since I only had one year left that I could finish up where I started.
Architorture_66@reddit
5 miles away. Walked. Couldn't afford a car with my single mom poor family, and people on the bus treated me like crap. It was just easier to take an hour and a half each way and walk to and from school.
genesimmonstongue415@reddit
3-5 miles away. Took the bus for 2 years, drove / got a ride for 2.
mattchewy43@reddit
Same but more than 5 miles.
dmaul17@reddit
13 miles, took school bus. Was a long ride with lots of stops including the middle school and an elementary school. So I had the same bus route K-12 that just got longer at middle and then high school.
Traditional_Entry183@reddit
Heck, my gradeschool was more than 5 miles away, lol. My HS was about 15 miles. 30 minute bus ride.
teriKatty@reddit
It was maybe 6 and 1/2 miles and for most of it I road the bus.
chithrowaway123@reddit
20 miles - Bus until I could drive
Prestigious_Rip_289@reddit
20 miles away, and the bus could get me as close as 2 miles from my doorstep since it didn't go down dirt roads that weren't county maintained. I was a farm kid.
I usually drove, once I rode my horse, another time I drove a tractor. Both of the weird ones were part of a bid to win the election for FFA chapter president. (I did, and was the first girl to win, but thankfully not the last)
Cromasters@reddit
Ten miles away and I took the bus all four years.
ManiacRichX@reddit
Nunya business
no_clever_name_yet@reddit
6 miles away. Rode the bus 9-11, drove 12.
MotherofaPickle@reddit
7.2 miles, according to Google Maps. Catholic High School, no bussing available. If you left 10 minutes early, you’d get there before they unlocked the doors. If you left 5 minutes late, you’d be 20 minutes late.
Spirited_Storage3956@reddit
5 miles. Took a bus until I bought a car. Bus took forever, drive was 15-20 minutes
SchucksAndMucks@reddit
11 miles. Bus until I could drive. I truly think it’s why I’m a morning and punctual person b/c come 9yr old I had to wake up on my own, feed myself, watch Inspector Gadget, then get to the bus on time. I never missed the bus.
TeekTheReddit@reddit
My high school was a 25 minute drive to a different county.
Custos-7013@reddit
My school was a 25 minute walk maybe... 🤔
Sharessa84@reddit
Took the bus through most of school though I realized way too late in high school that I was close enough that it was an easy bike ride and not too long to walk (about 2-3 miles). I had always been at the last stop to school so that should have been a clue.
drwebb@reddit
3-5 miles and biked
bgva@reddit
According to Google, four miles by car. So definitely took the bus or rode with friends/drove once I got my license.
jaywinner@reddit
3 miles. Took the school bus. On the off chance that wasn't possible, public transit.
HillBillyMadman@reddit
Just over 5 miles. Took the bus.
Tiny-Reading5982@reddit
1.6m and I was able to ride the bus but I walked a lot because I'd get there way before thr bus ever did
Gewitwel@reddit
More then 9 miles (15km), Bicycle.
TransportationOk657@reddit
Less than a mile from my house. Junior high was probably a bit under 2 miles away, so well within walking distance.
Similar_Tie3291@reddit
Mile and a half. Uphill both ways.
Daped01@reddit
2 miles rode bus until I got my license
emptybeetoo@reddit
A little over 2 miles, but I usually got a ride. I walked sometimes, but there were no sidewalks for maybe a mile of it so walking was sketchy.
stealthyliz@reddit
3-5 miles, walked.
callsignmario@reddit
Yeah, "walking distance" is a pretty subjective option. For me, Midwest, miles was also walking distance some years. Mom dropped me off most of the elementary years and would walk to her work after school. Bussed to middle and high school but some of those I chose to walk instead of dealing with some of the shit I experienced on the bus.
UbiquitousBot@reddit
8 miles from house. My school was newly built in the mid 90s and as such they built it way outside of town, down a highway then up on a hill. You could not walk there. Everyone was bussed unless you paid the school to park of which there were 2k students and only like 200 parking places. I'm not sure how anyone did activities.
FatReverend@reddit
bout 3 miles but often walked instead of taking the bus.
beeurd@reddit
I went to a Catholic school so it was about 12 miles away, but there was a school bus chartered (not very common in the UK).
BananasPineapple05@reddit
Well over 5 miles away. Had to switch from one school bus (which stopped at the elementary school) to the other to get to it.
Swansong80@reddit
Boarding school hell. We never got to leave school, every minute of the day was scheduled. It was the worst 4 years of my life.
SummonerMiku75@reddit
0.9 miles was the threshold in my southern Connecticut town for bus eligibility.
batastronaut@reddit
I basically didn't do afterschool activities because there wasn't a reliable way to get home after.
