Have you been put off by fast food lately?
Posted by sillwuka@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 136 comments
I've started going back to the gym with more of a focus on healthier meals and I had a KFC today. It tasted horrific (from someone who used to consume fast food every other day previously)
I think I'll just stick to cooking home cooked meals for the foreseeable.
Trippy_V@reddit
I've been put off by the price. Fast food would be cheap, quick and accessible if you were tired after work or wanted a little treat. Now £20+ for dinner for two.
glasgowgeg@reddit
Cheap is relative, what would a proper sit down meal for 2 cost you? It would likely be £20+ per person.
Also, 2 large meals Big Mac meals at McDonalds is only £13.38 if I check my local, so not £20+.
Independent_Coast758@reddit
Eat all your meals at home……make from scratch… truly cook and not box food from grocery and you can feed 2 people for a fraction of that. Way too many people don’t know how to truly cook/bake.
glasgowgeg@reddit
Sure, but that's not what's being discussed, we're talking about the cost of fast food.
Independent_Coast758@reddit
True…….but fast food is the problem. Seems to be a conversation that misses the root of the problem.
glasgowgeg@reddit
Fast food isn't the problem in this instance, it's simply a discussion about the cost of fast food.
Cooking at home is irrelevant because it's not what's being discussed.
Trippy_V@reddit
A Fillet Tower Box meal at my local KFC is £11.49. A Fillet Tower Meal is £9.49. So yes...£20. Going out for a proper sit down meal is not comparable to going to a Fast Food place.
glasgowgeg@reddit
When evaluating something as "cheap", being cheap is relative.
If it costs you £40 for a fast casual meal in a sit down place, then the £20 fast food is comparatively cheap.
donalmacc@reddit
10 years ago my weeks groceries was £50 for two of us, and minimum wage was £7.25. My weekly shop for the same two people this week was £110 and minimum wage is £12.71.
KFC is likely cheaper now relatively than it was in 2016!
glasgowgeg@reddit
£7.20, not £7.25, so 10 years ago, minimum wage was 14.4% of your weekly shop.
Now minimum wage is 11.5% of your weekly shop, so yeah cheaper now.
Not_A_Toaster_0000@reddit
Need to factor in income tax and NI before we can say for sure
sillwuka@reddit (OP)
Yeah it's not cheap these days, it's not even 'fast' anymore.
domambrose96@reddit
McDonald’s by ours has you park up for EVERYTHING. Justeat/Deliveroo have killed “fast food” off at Maccies/KFC etc.
Unlucky-Public-2947@reddit
Used to be able to stroll into McDonald’s on Oxford st in a morning and leave with a McMuffin 30 seconds later. Now it’s 5-7 minutes.
sillwuka@reddit (OP)
The hilarious thing is on Justeat, Maccies give you a discount if the order takes too long. Probably should be focusing on drive thru customers but they aren't a priority anymore.
gotmunchiez@reddit
Some of it is barely food either
Most-Island-7043@reddit
After eating proper food for a good while and going back to fast food/ heavily processed shite you realise how over salty and over sugared a lot of convenience food is and it tastes disgusting.
Independent_Coast758@reddit
I haven’t eaten fast food in 3 years. Making all my food at home from scratch. Much healthier. Fast food tastes terrible honestly.
Independent_Coast758@reddit
Also…..I’m a US citizen who has lived in UK for 2 years so far. The US fast food restaurants here are the ones no one in US eat at anymore. Honestly. Burger King back home is almost totally closed everywhere. UK doesn’t have the actual good fast food from US (not that any US ones are truly great……but the top ones in US aren’t here (Culver’s restaurant crushes McDonald and Burger King but it’s a mid west, central part of US and not international). But it will all make you fat. I lost 3 stones living here…..not eating fast food and feel like a new man.
SparkOfLife1@reddit
As someone who works at a KFC, I can wholeheartedly say that, if I didn't (and thus, didn't get free lunches when I have breaks,) I would probably only ever go into a KFC for food maybe... once every two or three months, minimum... cause just seeing how ridiculous the prices are compared to what you actually get is... so painful to me.
PKblaze@reddit
No, but fast food for me is a once every couple of weeks - a month situation. I do enjoy when I have it BUT we make better food at home. If I wan egg fried rice for example, my partner makes it better than any local takeout.
BrewtallyCozy@reddit
It just doesn’t taste the same anymore. I’d rather my cheat meal be a sausage roll from the shops or a large chocolate bar!
Krakshotz@reddit
Price has gone up but quality has either stayed relatively the same or gotten worse.
missuseme@reddit
Every single Tuesday I would go into my local subway and order the sub of the day, chicken tikka. Then one day I walked in and asked for the sub of the day and they told me they don't do sub of the day anymore.
That was probably like 8 years ago and I've had subway maybe 3 times since. Lost me as a once a week customer to maybe 5 time a decade customer.
Krakshotz@reddit
I remember a few years ago they changed their strategy and the subs came with a set of toppings already and you couldn’t make any changes (maybe remove things but no replacements). Workers seemed to ignore that rule to the point they ditched it
sir_are_a_Baboon_too@reddit
And your analogy is muti-faceted to boot. The food costs more, and the portions and sizes are shrinking. Less food for your money by volume. THEN! There is less "food" in your food, as corners are being cut to save even more money. Things like Soy being put in (and high fructose corn syrup if you're American), plus some other less nutrient dense alternatives.
The economics of it all really piss me off. Pay more, get less, get lower quality, profits go up, but profits aren't cut into when an external factor puts the price up. As they just keep putting up the price to match the cost increases. It's vicious.
PennyBunPudding@reddit
Sub of the day £2 RIP
MCfru1tbasket@reddit
This is nothing more than a flex. Flsirplay for getting healthy.
nightfire_83@reddit
It's a false economy. Mum treated me to a McDonald's yesterday. £18 for 2 meals. I was hungry 3 hours later. Wasn't even that good. Can get a weeks worth of meat for that. I remember when they were £5 a meal
sillwuka@reddit (OP)
I still remember them at £4.50 a meal and you look at the actual prices, shocker.
glasgowgeg@reddit
As I replied to someone else, they're comparatively cheaper now.
The £5 meal they refer to was 2018, where it represented 63.7% of an hours minimum wage work.
At my local McDonalds, a meal is 52.6% of an hours minimum wage work, and even if I go out of my way to cherrypick the most expensive McDonalds in a 5 mile radius, that's still only 59.7% of an hours wage.
They're comparatively cheaper now, you've just cemented a bunch of prices from when you were younger in your head, and you've decided that anything ever being higher is bad and more expensive, despite it not being the case.
nightfire_83@reddit
It's madness for wank food.
glasgowgeg@reddit
What was minimum wage at the time compared to now?
In 2018, a large big mac meal was £4.99, and minimum wage was £7.83/hour for those aged 25+, so about 63.7% of an hours work.
A large big mac meal at my local mcdonalds is currently £6.69, and minimum wage is £12.71 for those aged 21+, so 52.6% of an hours work.
It's comparatively cheaper now than it was when they were £5 for a meal.
R-TTK@reddit
I moved to a more rural place out the way from take out food. I find these days my body suffers like a hang over if I eat it which is enough to put me off for the most part. Will still have Chinese very rarely maybe twice a year tops and even then I suffer for it hahah
OMG-BITCHTITS@reddit
Used to like it, but quality went down prices went up. Cook at home it’s fun, add what you want. Cheaper just a fucker cleaning up afterwards
thickwhiteduck@reddit
Once you learn how to cook, most fast food tastes shit.
This_Suit8791@reddit
Home cooked is so much better. I use to have a McDonald every now and then and some times a kfc but it’s bad these days.
I was never a big pasta eater but I decided to try my own chicken in white wine and cream pasta and its so good, even my son who didn’t really like pasta much says it’s his favourite meal by far.
Over the last few years I’ve changed to mostly eating freshly prepared meals and it’s been a life changer.
LilKittenAngel@reddit
I’ve been on a better diet and calorie deficit since 9 Feb. I have gone off all fast food EXCEPT kfc. KFC is my beloved
sillwuka@reddit (OP)
What do you normally get?
LilKittenAngel@reddit
The mighty bucket for one meal (2 pc chicken, 2 pc tenders) and a gravy. The kfc I get it from cooks it well though, so thats why it’s so yummy to me lol. Ive had badly cooked kfc in the past and yeah not for me
CoffeeandaTwix@reddit
My gym doesn't serve food so going to get better meals wouldn't help me...
...but in general, no... Never been a fan of KFC... I always wanted it as a kid and thought it would be the pinnacle of chicken but it is somehow worse than any backstreet chicken shop ever.
In any case, I don't see fast food as unhealthy; it doesn't have to be... It is just simple food cooked quickly. My favourite takeaway place does pretty decent food and I don't use it very much but when I have, I get a pretty good meal out of it (tasty and healthy) I normally get a chicken sizzler which is barbecued chicken with onions, peppers, salad and rice.
TimboJimbo81@reddit
What a paradox of an opening sentence
sillwuka@reddit (OP)
Haha I should have mentioned it was a cheat meal
General-End4503@reddit
doesn't even have to be a "cheat meal" if you take into account caloric intake. And your diet / workout goals. Fast food doesn't inherently mean it will ruin your diet.
sillwuka@reddit (OP)
Agree, this meal still did fit within my daily calorie intake. Felt like cheating as I havent had fried food or fries for months.
General-End4503@reddit
Cheating is a terrible way to look at it, as long as it fits into calorie intake no harm no foul
General-End4503@reddit
Plenty of times me and my mates would go gym and maccies after got easy calories lol
BowlerImmediate7005@reddit

haha didn't actually look at how long it had been there... my bad 🤭
Chunky_Monkey4491@reddit
I quit fast food and other junk for Lent. On my birthday I decided to get a Chinese and I discovered what used to be a £20 succulent Chinese meal is now easily £30. I just can't justify the cost of it.
captainfishpie@reddit
yes, 100%.
me and my husband would eat it every other day because, well, out of laziness.
now we cook everything, eat properly and snack better.
not only have I lost 3 stone, we are obviously doing better with money and we both feel less sluggish.
takeaway is just shit, now its just about finding the least shit one you can find as opposed to the best one.
Paradroid808@reddit
Same experience recently. Bit into a piece of KFC chicken and a giant stream of hot oil shot out.. probably half a shot glass if not more, no joke.
The chicken tasted like crap. Didn't even finish the piece, it made me feel so sick.
flippertyflip@reddit
I'm hugely disappointed everytime I have big chain fast food. Dry shit with the only spice being pepper.
Yet everytime I have an independent 'bossman' kebab I enjoy it.
Captaincadet@reddit
What’s put me off is the price and everything’s now around just eat et al.
Last takeaway I had turned up 6 hours late. Just eat said that was an acceptable delay and denied any refund
Amex luckily disagreed
hide_in_plain_sight_@reddit
I was semi put off recently then I tried the below the other day and it was bloody delicious! Pickles everywhere 🥒
I think with fast food as they are franchises it’s very hit and miss. Gotta find the good ones.

Since we got our kids ( 10 years ago) we dont eat fast food anymore , we where showing the kids the Jeamie Oliver Videos how they do burgers n chicken nuggets for McDonalds & BK , they find it discusting and dont want to eat that shit , never asking to. We do Burgers n Nuggest at home from scratch or buying nuggets made from file only ...
sillwuka@reddit (OP)
I think it's great if they've grown up without it, they won't yearn for it if there's quality food at home.
Dazz316@reddit
KFC is always a risk, it can be the best and worst food. They have nobody doing checks of the restaurants. McDonalds used to be concise but now it's the same, I was never a fan of the burgers but their chips were always fresh and tender, but now many places give me cold soggy chips.
For me it's the price. Everywhere has gone up but the gap between Fast Food and places that give you similar but better food is a lot smaller than it once was. I can go to Burger King or McDonalds and get a fairly shitty burger for what's a bit expensive now or go somewhere else and get a big fat juicy tasty burger.
YoghurtFlan@reddit
KFC was a lot better about 20 years ago when it had a spicier taste (even the chips had it).
It's quite bland now, except for the mayo having a bit of a tang still.
sillwuka@reddit (OP)
I can't remember the last time I got hot fries at any of these places.
Alarmed-Cheetah-1221@reddit
I got some yesterday which was a pleasant surprise
Mapleess@reddit
Best time to go is when it's busy since new batches will be made.
Subsyxx@reddit
I used to eat and love fast food.
About 10 years ago, I went veggie and was forced to quit fast food. I then became pescatarian and now eat everything again, but I can't stand the taste or smell of fast food, especially friend chicken.
It just tastes so bad! I'd rather batter my own chicken.
eat-my-rice@reddit
Fried chicken shops in east London are great
Uniquorn527@reddit
The size, taste, quality and value of the chicken from my local fried chicken shop is at least ten times better than anything I've had at KFC. I really don't see the appeal in KFC specifically when any random chicken place seems to do it better. Maybe I focus more on the meat than the coating and that's what people go for?
eat-my-rice@reddit
I think KFC had to reduce salt and Saturated fats due to government pressure that’s why it taste bland
sillwuka@reddit (OP)
I think my local chicken shops have surpassed KFC in quality now too.
Ashamed_Housing7489@reddit

I've never been big on fast food. I stayed with a friend the other weekend, he ordered takeout and I had abit and it just didn't taste all that good. Too greasy, much prefer home cooked food
Maleficent-Bag-9916@reddit
I think the quality of fast food has also gone down in general, when I was younger it used to taste like heaven, now sometimes I think “why did I bother” 🥲
Flat_Development6659@reddit

I had my first Chinese takeaway since December yesterday and, whilst it was deliciously unhealthy and tasty, it was probably about 2500 calories. I do regret it as I felt like shit for the rest of the evening and definitely didn't need anything else to eat.
I stopped drinking alcohol and it never tastes the same without a beer or cider.

Yeah, always been put off. Health wise it’s the worst, and now considering the price…
Connect-Bug9988@reddit
Had a Papa John last week and it was terrible, from the store in Banstead I used to order from a few years ago.
It was always perfect back then, but this recent one turned up stone cold, had next to no toppings, cheese or sauce, and literally just tasted like dough.
Straight in the bin!
DarrenTheDrunk@reddit
Papa John had got to be the worst of the Pizza places.
Low-Cauliflower-5686@reddit
Where I stay ,a few papa John's have closed. Not sure what happened. I know they are like franchises
Connect-Bug9988@reddit
Been seeing lots of people saying that prices have shot up, and quality has gone through the floor.
Decided to risk it, as I'd already called around a few places and nowhere was delivering late.
Won't be making that mistake again when I want a late night munch 🤣

It makes my acid reflux worse and I feel like crap after it. I make sure to have pre-cooked food (like chicken breast or salmon) for when I get hungry.
bannanawaffle13@reddit
Yea, I took a break from fast food for a good few months, it now just taste awful way too salty, like drinking salt water, awful taste and weirdly at the same time bland. I know treat myself to boogie supermarket meals if I want a treat, m and s vegan pizza and vegan garlic bread are amazing and about the same price as a pizza from my local shop.
sillwuka@reddit (OP)
I've been doing similar, treating myself to higher quality ingredients. Bank balance is a bit lighter but I guess I'm saving from all the fast food nonsense.
bannanawaffle13@reddit
Yeah, I am still better off though because I only treat myself maybe 4 or 5 times a year instead of 4 or 5 times a month.
JusSumYungGuy@reddit
I haven’t had KFC in a few years but from what I’ve heard it’s just gotten shittier and shittier, like most “fast food”. Also maybe you’ve adapted to liking the healthy meals so the junk just doesn’t seem as nice anymore
WastelandOfConfusion@reddit
Anyone with an ounce of intelligence understands the importance of cooking your own healthy food. Almost everything out there is absolute dogschitt with a massive price tag. It’s fun if you’re a teenager.
sarcic93@reddit
I used to love fast food and eat it a couple times a week. I then decided to get healthy and cook healthy meals at home and start working out. I have now lost all desire for fast food, and when I had a maccies (which I used to love) a couple weeks ago it was disgusting.
All this to say, it is a good thing that it no longer appeals to you!
sillwuka@reddit (OP)
Similar discovery to me
andycwb1@reddit
I’ve gradually got more and more disappointed with fast food. I can cook a better burger in the time it takes me to get a takeaway. I can make better wings than KFC. About the only takeaway I order these days is pizza and even that is a bit of a last resort. The closest I come to fast food most months is Honest Burgers - I meet a group of friends in Reading every month and Honest Burgers is my favourite quick meal before meeting.
makiiholic@reddit
So true with home meals now are better than most fast food, both in price, time, and quality. Share your KFC wings recipe! Still trying to replicate.
Old_Man_Benny@reddit
Can I have your wing recipe please
andycwb1@reddit
It’s not a recipe as such…. Whatever spice rub I have handy mixed with a bit of cornflour to make it crisp. 9 minutes a side on a hot (gas) BBQ with some wood chips, squirt with whatever bottle of Sauce Shop’s latest BBQ sauce is. You can do them under the grill if you don’t have have a BBQ.
MixAway@reddit
The cost of KFC is ridiculous now, and the size of the burger fillets has shrunk significantly - they’re so thin. Have stopped going there.
The only thing I can’t resist is a Big Mac!
sillwuka@reddit (OP)
I remember everyone kicking off lately on them reducing the size of the Big Tasty, loved that burger previously.
AdQuick708@reddit
McDonald's has become so overpriced, KFC also. It gets to the point where I might as well go sit down somewhere when im paying their prices.
BearAmazing6284@reddit
So much litter you see on the street and at the side of the road will be fast food packaging. Kinda makes me hate it by association.
griffaliff@reddit
KFC is rubbish imo, I absolutely love indulging in a McDonald's once a month or so however the fast food place that gets me spending the most money is Greggs. I probably eat there once a week.
Smart-Fondant9015@reddit
Try McDonald or Burger King. Gave up with McDonald months ago - its mot eatable now. Got Burger King last week on airport. My favorite from decade ago - Steakhouse Whooper. Never again. Everything was same consistency, everything taste artificial, manged to eat chips but bin half of my burger. I was feel it few hours after - my body was like fighting out what I put inside me. Never again US fast foods for me.
Enshitification. You can see clearly how big coroporations from US delivering worse and worse product just more expensive every year. Their fastfood are not better.
Ldiablohhhh@reddit
I love a takeaway. It's a end of week treat for me, there's a Wendys that has opened locally and it's amazing. I've never and won't even have it more than once a week though.
No wonder you got sick of it though if you were eating it every other day though.
AWDanzeyB@reddit
I tend to have one or two over the weekend, otherwise try and cook from scratch through the week. Definitely not been put off by it, nice way to relax at the weekend. Had a burger King today that hit the spot.
'Every couple of days' is crazy work though. Must have cost a fortune, and it would probably just make me feel like shit. I think you may just have overdone it.
sillwuka@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I was overdoing it massively. I went through a period of laziness where I'd ordered on ubereats but I deleted the app now. Burger King was probably a much better shout than deep fried chicken.
Cannot beat a home cooked meal with fresh ingredients.
AWDanzeyB@reddit
Just depends, home cooked is often best. Especially for cost / nutrition reasons.
But occasionally you'll just crave something unhealthy. (Especially if like me you're dealing with a hangover). Nothing wrong with it, as long as it's in moderation.
PinkyPeach1_2@reddit
I just hate how it barely fills me up yet it costs so much money for really bad quality food. I’d much prefer to make my own versions of maccies or KFC than eat their overpriced rubbish
Thomas5020@reddit
No.
I go to the gym these days and eat extremely well, but fast food is largely for the times where I can't cook at home. Like, I don't have a kitchen in my car.
yoy78@reddit
I now prefer making fakeaways. They taste better and I can avoid the restless legs and heartburn.
But sometimes I just can’t be bothered cooking so then I order too much and feel rubbish for it (it’s a work in progress)

PolarLocalCallingSvc@reddit
It's not prevalent where I live anyway.
Other than that, I went off it years ago. Don't get me wrong, there's a guilty pleasure in an Italian-insulting pizza or a KFC, but I've never really found them that satiating, so they're best reserved for those nights I want to eat then just fall asleep!
PNWest01@reddit
No, it’s not you - KFC has gone to shit. Soggy, greasy chicken, flavorless coleslaw. It’s just bad.
g0ldcd@reddit
It's been like that for many many years.
Everybody thinks they like KFC, it's just their local one is shit.. and then we talk and we collectively realise..
Spaceraider22@reddit
I’ve found the quality has increased in recent years, probably contrary to popular belief. KFC and Burger King in particular, I remember them being overly greasy and lacking in real flavour but the last couple times I’ve went it was marginally better. Maybe because of the expansion of other chains in recent years I.e Popeyes, Wingstop etc have put them on their toes.
Oohoureli@reddit
I had KFC once, about thirty years ago. That was enough.
I can’t really see how one can reconcile trying to get healthy with ANY kind of fast or ready meal type food tbh.
Abject_Sir_5728@reddit
It all depends on what you’re having and broader lifestyle.
If you’re having the McDonald’s lunch wrap with grilled chicken breast and skipping the chips, that’s much more balanced than having the full MCD or other fast food meal on a more than 1x weekly basis
sillwuka@reddit (OP)
I agree if it was more for convenience I'd probably get that from Maccies. Still fairly in protein, low cals and nothing fried.
MoominMai@reddit
May as well go grab a meal deal at least it’s capped at approx a fiver and a lot of the supermarkets have fairly high protein focussed range as well 🙂

Yes, but. When consuming every day you get used to it, all the grease and the impact it has on your body.
If you've been off it a bit and you go back, you just notice how terrible these places are.
These days as well as an almost across the board quality reduction, prices have rocketed meaning that especially if you want a delivery, it just doesn't make so much sense anymore.
