Hi all, I have a 2006 Ford Taurus with about 147,000 miles on it that is suspected to have a clog in the exhaust system stemming from the catalytic converter. I have gotten an estimate from my mechanic friend who is thinking it could be about $2000 for parts and labor. That's more than the Kelly Blue book value of the car, but could be more than what my usual mechanic quotes.
Now, this is my wife's car that she has had for a long time and it has been a thorn in my side, needs a major repair every few months. I'm really wanting to get rid of it and get her something more reliable. I could really use some advice on what to do with the Taurus. I'm completely new to the whole process of getting rid of a car.
I'm trying to figure out if I should repair it and trade it in, try to sell it as is on Craigslist with disclosure, or some other option. I'd like to get as much out of it as I can to put towards a new one and just am not sure how to approach this.

repairs being more expensive than the value of the car is meaningless. good luck trying to find a decent car for that $2000. it's better to invest that money into the car you already have than to buy a new one that you're not sure if you can trust.

Replacing the cat doesn't fix the actual problem, that is just a side effect of what is really wrong with it.

Clean the cat out and keep going. "New" cars are expensive and questionable.

Forget KBB, you need to look at the market. You can't buy a running driving 2006 car for 2k.
It could be that the car is worth 4k, so it would be worth fixing then selling rather than just scrap

I had an ‘07 Civic Si that ran great but needed a new AC compressor. I had bought the compressor but didn’t want to pay the labor. So I posted the car on OfferUp and listed the disclaimer I had the part that needed to be replaced and I would include the part with the car. Depending on what component of the car needs to be replaced, you may be able to purchase the part and sell it with the car? A lot of times the labor is way more costly than the part, and a DIYer may take on the repair themselves if they can get a good deal on a car.

Your car is worth basically scrap value. No one is giving you more than $1000 for this car.
