Are you able to name every European country just by looking at a map?
Posted by bammab0890@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 149 comments
I assume its a similar ask of you as it is for an American to be able to name every state the same way.
Pizzagoessplat@reddit
Yes, including the micro states.
I must have travelled to over thirty of them
heimdallofasgard@reddit
Yep, anything east of Italy in the med I get confused though, apart from Greece. Sometimes bulkans are difficult too
Original-Activity575@reddit
If I were looking at a map, sure. That’s kinda the purpose of a map
AccomplishedMove3149@reddit
Yes
nonsequitur__@reddit
Nope
flummuxedsloth@reddit
Yes. I regularly quiz myself on it because that's the kind of fun guy I am.
https://www.geoguessr.com/vgp/3007
VegetableWeekend6886@reddit
That was fun thanks for the link
MacaroonSad8860@reddit
88% but I would have gotten one less wrong had I not accidentally clicked on San Marino for Italy. I always confuse Latvia and Lithuania.
Historical_Heron4801@reddit
Pro tip: They're alphabetical Est, Lat, Lit
Greedy_Morning_2141@reddit
Fuck yeah! This is exactly why I have leisure time 👍
cymruaj@reddit
100% in 1.47, would have been faster on a computer rather than a phone due to having to zoom in for the micro nations.
You'd probably enjoy these quizzes I do daily - all have follow up questions after the main aim, but I'll put the main aim by the name and links below
Worldle - guess the country from its shadow outline with nothing around it Flagle - guess the country from its flag WhereTaken - guess the country from a photo taken somewhere within its borders Travle - find the quickest route by country from two random countries
https://worldle.teuteuf.fr/ https://www.flagle.io/ https://wheretaken.teuteuf.fr/ https://travle.earth/
sjplep@reddit
Ever tried https://www.geogridgame.com/ ?
cymruaj@reddit
Have done but not for ages!
Happy_Ad_3918@reddit
Ah, that’s great. Got one wrong … put Montenegro where Bosnia should’ve been, got it right second time round.
bammab0890@reddit (OP)
I was just doing that exact quiz lol. It's the reason why I asked.
Those eastern European countries are tough for me.
MillicentColdstone@reddit
Jet punk has many similar quizzes too!
gnufan@reddit
No, leave it to the Geoguessers.
Lot of people saying yes, but I didn't even know San Marino existed till recently (and Would have labelled the other little ones correctly (Andorra, Luxembourg, Monaco, Vatican, Malta etc).
Heck I'm not mot even confident on the status of bits I think count as the UK; such as Isle of Man, Gibraltar, the Channel Islands (although I can label them on a map), let alone microstates like Sealand.
Missdebj@reddit
I don’t think I could do it with or without looking at a map. The Eastern European countries would be my downfall. Probably a similar story with American states
Plodil@reddit
I would struggle with a couple of the nations who were former USSR states to the East but apart from that yeah I could name them all.
MINKIN2@reddit
Yeah, the Balkans get a bit fuzzy.
Pleasant-Put5305@reddit
We are taught geography at school and take foreign holidays a lot.
GnaphaliumUliginosum@reddit
I'm fine with most of the USSR states, but the Balkans remain fixed in my mind as Albania and Yugoslavia, as they were in my school atlas. I can probably name most of the new countries, but wouldn't be very confident.
I would probably get around half the US states with confidence - coastal states outside the crowded NE are straightforward, the four corner states and parts of the SE are good to, but the midwest and NE are a bit blurry.
National_Back_1658@reddit
I probably could get to the high 30s but the map isn't going to help much. When it comes to the map, I am very bad at pinpointing any country on it in Eastern Europe.
bammab0890@reddit (OP)
I get so confused when I try. I can't pinpoint countries like Moldova for the life of me.
MojoMomma76@reddit
It’s the little crescent-y one to the right of Romania
caiaphas8@reddit
Yeah the key to placing all the countries is to know something about the country too, in Moldova they speak Romanian and used to be part of the USSR, if you know those two facts it becomes very easy to place the country in a map
farraigemeansthesea@reddit
Travel helps. Visualising that route on a map puts in in your long-term memory somehow.
Alternatively, my 11 yo, who hasn't travelled that much yet, watches endless YouTube geo videos and can name every single country in the world, including capital and leader.
BabyClyde@reddit
I can do both.
Beneficial-Code8026@reddit
I can do the whole world map with territories too
_gothick@reddit
No, not a chance. I’d probably get about the same percentage as if I tried the US states.
New_Line4049@reddit
Id say most of them, yes. Theres a few more towards Eastern Europe, probably former soviet block countries I might struggle with, but most Id be alright with
SwordTaster@reddit
I'm never gonna get half of the stuff easy of Germany. Alas, I don't know the former USSR and Slavic nations very well
sigmastarmer@reddit
Yeah I could do it pretty easily
laconicwheeze@reddit
No
pineapplewin@reddit
As others have said the equivalent would be naming all the 48 counties.
I can babe all, and the 50 US states, but I can't babe more than a handful of counties/parishes in any US state
Illustrious-Mango605@reddit
Pretty much. I struggle with the Balkans nations.
Kickkickkarl@reddit
I could name every European country on the map but might get the positions of Slovakia and Slovenia mixed up.
KonkeyDongPrime@reddit
That is not only quite the faux pas, but also really difficult to do with only the most basic bit of knowledge about those countries.
Blue1994a@reddit
Yes. Been to all but a couple.
bammab0890@reddit (OP)
It's so interesting to me that you guys have access to so many cultures in a relatively convenient way.
I traveled over 2,000 miles west last summer (around 3,200 km I think) and I was still in the same damn country.
KonkeyDongPrime@reddit
Doug Stanhope did a sketch about this. America is the greatest country on earth. You have loads of space and loads of different landscapes to go on holiday. This opportunity without leaving the country or the culture does not discourage you from being a bit stupid, because you can get away with it.
hrfr5858@reddit
That's nearly the diameter of the moon.
bammab0890@reddit (OP)
Is it really? I honestly didn't realize the moon was THAT small.
hrfr5858@reddit
3474km, according to Google. Less wide than Australia!
Some_Ad6507@reddit
My husbands favourite fact
KonkeyDongPrime@reddit
No that’s a false equivalence. Similar ask would be UK or English counties
OblivionWithBells101@reddit
Yeah I reckon I could…tbh I’ve done my hours on sporcle across the years…
JinxThePetRock@reddit
That's why I can name them all, and their capitals. And pretty much everywhere else in the world, and their capitals. Though I get a little mixed up on which Oceanic countries are which, and which caribbean islands are which.
I like going to pub quizzes and Sporcle is the best training tool.
sjplep@reddit
I can yes.
The closest UK equivalent to an American being able to name every state would be being able to name every county (traditional/modern). Otoh the US American equivalent to a Brit being able to name every European country would be being able to name every country in the Americas imho.
(I do a lot of geography quizzes - I struggle a bit with the Caribbean and some Pacific islands - but I can name every European country, every US state, and every English county).
Party-Werewolf-4888@reddit
I can name about 90% of them, as. European. Funnily enough i can name 100% of US States 🥹
chiefgareth@reddit
Western Europe yes, easily. Eastern Europe gets a bit tougher.
DLNN_DanGamer@reddit
I would be able to name them all without looking at a map. I named all 197 UN recognised countries in 17 minutes and 38 seconds without looking at a map. How? Me and my friend spent many hours memorising every country and every flag back in A-Level Geography classes. Don't ask if that's what we were supposed to be doing. 😭
Ask me how to say a sentence in French on the other hand.. 😰
JohnnyOneLung@reddit
I can name them all, but the Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia split ups mean I won’t necessarily match them correctly to the outlines on the map.
Would probably be able to do the US states though.
MarmosetRevolution@reddit
Only if it was a map of Europe.
BrutalOnTheKnees@reddit
I couldn't name every European country even by looking at a map with the names of every European country on it.
Even_Video7549@reddit
Aye if the name of the country is on the map as well 🤷♀️🤣🤣
JohnCasey3306@reddit
Western and Central Europe without a doubt
East of Poland and South of Hungary I'm probably gonna hit 25% correct at best.
Miserable-Rub-4053@reddit
I might struggle to get some of the Eastern European nations in the right order but I reckon I’d get a good 90% right.
IntrepidMaybe8579@reddit
All but the akistan’s and anian’s
llynllydaw_999@reddit
I got the quiz geoguesser quiz that someone else linked to 100% correct, so yes. The only ones I wasn't 100% sure about were getting Latvia and Lithuania the right way round.
dualdee@reddit
Not all, west and north are easy but some of the southeast gets hazy for me, I could probably remember the names but not match them to the right positions.
I tried filling in the state names on a blank map a couple of months ago and got 48 right (switched Minnesota and Wisconsin) so I'm actually better at that than at Europe!
ManInGarage28@reddit
Yes.
captainsittingduck@reddit
Yes
SpringLow_@reddit
yeah, if it has the names on
BlackJackKetchum@reddit
Well yes, can’t you?
prustage@reddit
Yes. And I can name every US State.
Its one of those things you learn as a bored teenager because you think it might impress people.
It doesn't.
bammab0890@reddit (OP)
Most Americans can't name every US state from a map alone so it is actually kind of impressive.
Dangerous-Safe-4336@reddit
You used to need to know all the states to pass the fifth grade.
torhysornottorhys@reddit
Memorising things long enough to pass a test and then forgetting everything you learned is very common though
bammab0890@reddit (OP)
That's definitely not in the curriculum here.
I couldn't name hardly any eastern European countries until I started studying them on my own.
Dangerous-Safe-4336@reddit
I didn't learn Eastern Europe in school because it was the 1970s. It was all a huge pink blob labeled USSR.
TheWolfsMoon133@reddit
I definitely couldn’t get them all but bet my sister could. Though she went to a better school and is wayyy more travelled than me so….
Ok-Bad-7189@reddit
Na, could probably get two thirds but I definitely can't place the balkan and baltic countries. I know which ones are which but other than "in that area" I'd struggle.
Scandinavia, western and central Europe should be straightforward since I've visited most of them.
mearnsgeek@reddit
I can name them, but might need a couple of guesses to distinguish which of the Balkan states is which are, but other than that, yes.
evelynsmee@reddit
Actually it is similar to asking you to name every country in North and South America. Because Europe isn't a country.
And no, I probably couldn't mark all 44/50 on the map. I suspect I would get places like Lithuania and Latvia mixed up, and forget where Bulgaria is. I'm confident in a list of all the countries in the world I would identify all the European ones and recognise them all, but completely from scratch and getting the geography 100% correct I wouldn't be so vain to think I'd be error free
Funny-Salamander4691@reddit
Yes, I'm not American.
Nervous_Tourist_8699@reddit
Yep. I doubt if the average American could find their own state on a map, they think Alaska is an island next to Hawaii after all
bananabastard@reddit
I could name most countries in the world by looking at a map.
Ok_Corner5873@reddit
Yes and no, given a blank map and asking to name them all, not a chance, given it with a list of the countries and I'd be fairly confident of placing most right.
CPD1960@reddit
Yep!
shadow-season@reddit
God no.
Greatgrowler@reddit
Most but not all of them, but a list of the country names would be a great help. I’m sure my son could do them all without the list, and probably describe the flags of the top of his head too.
Ok_Veterinarian2715@reddit
Europe? All but one.
UK counties? Errrm yeah. Not good.
HufflepuffHarry@reddit
Think I'd get 80% but definitely but get to ones like Slovenia and Slovakia and guess which is which
SneakyCroc@reddit
Yes. I play a lot of Hearts of Iron, which helps, lol.
JukeboxTears@reddit
Yes I think so but may make a few mistakes with the Balkans. I can do the 50 states too.
Prior-Syrup3406@reddit
I was very aware that I was a bit geographically challenged a couple of years ago, so I my husband and I spent many nights just before going to bed quizzing to get me up to snuff. The odd few are a little wonky, but I can do Europe and the most of the rest of the world. I am weirdly proud 🥲 Starting on Capital Cities for 2026
Cheezy_Cheddarz@reddit
A decent amount yeah, ex-soviet od struggle with but anything west of those i know
GarageFlower14@reddit
Yes.
lawrekat63@reddit
Yes. I can name every country in the world on a map. It’s my superpower 🦸♀️
ramapyjamadingdong@reddit
Yes, I can sporkle .
I can do most of the continents but get lost in the carribean and central Africa.
HistoryCat92@reddit
Yes
Johnny_Vernacular@reddit
If the map has the names of the countries on, probably.
browsib@reddit
I can, but from intentionally learning it, rather than incidentally picking it up. The average person could probably get the obvious ones, guess at others correctly, but not be able to point out where, like, Montenegro is. Football fans might do better than others
Princes_Slayer@reddit
Pretty much. Might be the odd one I’m not sure on, but I reckon I’d get most
amBrollachan@reddit
All of Western Europe. I could get a lot of Eastern Europe but not confident around some of the smaller states that have appeared at some point since the fall of the wall.
Aggravating_Cloud657@reddit
I've played Sporcle a lot, I could get all on a good day, most of them otherwise.
Dangerous-Safe-4336@reddit
Unfortunately, when I learned the European countries it was the 1970s and nobody thought we should study Eastern Europe. So I'm still a bit fuzzy on those. I think I know the Western European countries that are big enough to show on the map. The tiny countries, maybe.
Orange_Codex@reddit
Easily.
I can name a vast majority of African and Asian ones too. It's the Pacific Island nations and a few in southern Africa that spoil it.
DogtasticLife@reddit
In theory yes but nowadays I seem to have forgotten at least half of all the things I did know so no probably not
Bob_Leves@reddit
Yes apart from it being 50:50 which way around Latvia and Lithuania are. Though I'm pretty sure Lithuania is bigger.
Alternative_Bit_7306@reddit
Yes
PM-me-your-cuppa-tea@reddit
Yes*, but last week the answer would have been no. I learnt them last week as I thought it was a bit embarrassing I didn't know the Balkans.
I suspect most Brits would say yes and then potentially forget Vatican, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Monaco, and then potentially forget a Malta, Cyprus, or even Iceland as they're focusing on mainland.
And then I suspect North Macedonia would call through the cracks, potentially along with a few other Balkan states,
*I do really struggle with getting Moldova and Montenegro the right way round.
Swansboy@reddit
I would say a lot of them, but not all of them.
becka-uk@reddit
Yes and 98% of the rest of the world and states as well as being pretty good with English counties.
bammab0890@reddit (OP)
Even the square US states? That trips up most Americans.
becka-uk@reddit
Pretty much. I got pretty obsessed with the Sporcle geography quizs a few years ago, the no outlines, get it right first time ones
SmashedWorm64@reddit
Fairly confident I can. Might struggle with the small ones (Vatican, North Macedonia, etc)
Vivid_Employment8635@reddit
Yes. The one where I wouldn’t be sure is our counties, particularly the ones in Scotland and Wales and some of the English midland ones.
Foreskin_Ad9356@reddit
yes but sometimes i forget a couple ex yugoslav countries
scottishsilversurfer@reddit
They're all foreigners to me
PaleozoicQueen@reddit
Yes.
TurbulentEffect99@reddit
Most of them, yes. Might struggle with a couple on the Eastern edge.
Bubbly_Safety8791@reddit
A big difference for Europeans remembering European countries vs US states is that European countries generally have very distinct languages and nationalities and international sports teams and historical and cultural rivalries associated with them so you have a lot more mental cues to go off when recalling which country is which. Sweden isn’t just ‘one of the countries up north’, it’s where they speak Swedish and where people with Swedish names come from. In comparison, Colorado and Wyoming are practically indistinguishable on a map except through memorizing what order they go in.
scottishsilversurfer@reddit
Yes
Time-Mode-9@reddit
No, I don't know which is Lithuania and which is Latvia.
Internet-Dick-Joke@reddit
I can never remember which way around Czechia, Slovakia, and Hungary go (and sometimes Austria and Romania trip me up too), and I'd struggle with some of the Balkans, so I think I'd say about 50/50.
PM-me-your-cuppa-tea@reddit
Austria has the penis that extends under Germany and tickles Switzerland. In terms of shape.
Romania is the very big one (for Eastern Europe) to the east that isn't Russia (absolutely fuck off massive), Ukraine (massive), Belarus (very big above Ukraine) and Poland (massive at the north next to Germany)
Then you just got to remember that Czechia and Slovakia are next to each other and they're alphabetical (Czechia is further north and further west than Slovakia) and Hungary is under them and next to Austria with its reaching penis.
Idk if that helps
Special-Nebula299@reddit
Pretty much. I often get Lithuania and Latvia mixed up but I think that's it.
Skuhtulhu@reddit
They’re in alphabetical order top to bottom - that’s how I remember at least
Bubbly_Safety8791@reddit
Central America, I use the same trick for the countries that span the isthmus between Mexico and Panama - north to south you have Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, (Costa) Rica in alphabetical order (okay I have to cheat a bit on Costa Rica but it works for me). Then you just need to remember El Salvador is the little country on the pacific coast and Belize the one on the Caribbean.
SoggyWotsits@reddit
I’ll be honest, no. A large number of them I’d get right, some I’d get mixed up. The ones that would trip me up usually end in ‘ia’, so Serbia, Slovenia, Latvia etc. They’re just not places I look at on a map very often.
Critical-Lettuce-503@reddit
I wouldn't need to look at a map.
With a map I reckon I could get at least 180 of the countries of the world. Mostly going to struggle with bits of Africa and the micro-nations.
Codlemagne@reddit
Not a chance.
tannercolin@reddit
Somewhere around 95%
jimmybiggles@reddit
yes, i can probably do it blindfolded/in order - probably for 99% of countries in the world not just europe tbh
Demostravius4@reddit
Yes. And most Capitals but I still struggle with a handful, particularly around the Balkans
PassiveTheme@reddit
I could. But I don't think it's true for most Brits. I specifically learnt the countries of Europe
Powerful-Adagio6446@reddit
Yep.
LaraH39@reddit
Most of them, the black sea states fuck me up a bit but yeah.
Liam030201@reddit
Yes. Also every other country in the world and all the US states
Deepfriedcyanid3@reddit
I could probably name a lot of them and most if not all of the US states
bammab0890@reddit (OP)
That's impressive. Do you enjoy studying geography? Most Americans can't name every state from a map alone.
Deepfriedcyanid3@reddit
I got a lil hyperfixated for a while. Learned all the states, then learned them alphabetically, and then learned their location. I'm trying to learn state capitals now. I'm just autistic and like memorising things
N64Andysaurus92@reddit
As a fan of the Eurovision song contest, I can point out the vast majority, probably not all of them though
_Cridders_@reddit
Yeah I could, I learned every country in the world once via a game, for reasons of presumably mild autism
But prior to that, and i guess for the average person, I reckon no. I had no clue a about Andorra, can't imagine the average person does.
Balthierlives@reddit
EU countries thst have had static borders for the last 50 years or so yes
All the countries out of that have changed their borders and names in thst time, probably not.
HotNeon@reddit
Sure. Provided said map was labelled with the countries
Unable_Obligation_73@reddit
Yes
Dear_Tangerine444@reddit
I want to say, ‘Yes, obviously’ but I’m bound to get confused by one of two. So realistically, probably not.
Kratuu_II@reddit
Yes, as long as it's a map with the names of countries on.
MojoMomma76@reddit
Yes
jabertsohn@reddit
Yes.
Livewire____@reddit
I could probably do it in less than two minutes, yes
Chopsticks_Charlie@reddit
Might get a few baltic countries wrong but yes fairly easily tbf
spinningdice@reddit
I'd be able to get a bunch, but not all of them, some are tiny
notacanuckskibum@reddit
No. West of Austria, yes. The Baltics, maybe. The Balkans, including the ex-Yugoslavia, absolutely not.
stupidlyboredtho@reddit
it’ll take me a few minutes but yeah i’ll get most of them if not all
qualityvote2@reddit
