Aid groups warn Iran war is hindering food and medicine from reaching millions

Aid groups are warning that the war in the Middle East has upended their ability to get food and medicine to millions of people around the world in need, and that the suffering will deepen if the violence continues.
Not only has the conflict cut off vital shipping routes, creating a global energy crisis, it’s also disrupting supply chains for aid groups, forcing them to use costlier, more time-consuming routes.
Key pathways such as the Strait of Hormuz have been effectively shuttered and routes from strategic hubs such as Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi have also been impacted. Transport costs have spiked with higher fuel and insurance rates, meaning less supplies can be delivered with the same amount of money.
The World Food Program says it has tens of thousands of metric tons of food heavily delayed in transit. The International Rescue Committee has $130,000 worth of pharmaceuticals intended for war-torn Sudan stranded in Dubai and nearly 670 boxes of therapeutic food meant for severely malnourished children in Somalia stuck in India. The U.N. Population Fund says it’s delayed sending equipment to 16 countries.
Steep U.S. cuts to foreign aid already had hobbled many aid groups, who say the war is exacerbating the problem.
The United Nations says this is the most significant supply chain disruption since COVID, with up to a 20% cost increase on shipments and delays as goods are rerouted. And the war is creating new emergencies, such as in Iran, and also in Lebanon where at least one million people have been displaced.

Iran didn't start this war. Not sure how it is their fault beyond the fact that they are defending themselves from IsraelUS the best way they can.
Best_Change4155@reddit
they kinda did

Yeah crazy they havent become a secular democracy.
Oh wait they did but we couped it and installed a bloodthirsty despot in the Shah, and after they revolted against him weve been enemies ever since. Crazy!

???
Mosaddegh wasn't Democratic.
Valensre@reddit
...Yeah, he was.
Best_Change4155@reddit
He refused to seat his political opponents by stopping the count, had his allies give him dictatorial powers, and then dissolved parliament. What part of that is democratic?
Valensre@reddit
Yeah, why did he do that?
Best_Change4155@reddit
As he started to do more and more dictatorial actions and became more and more unpopular, he was constitutionally dismissed by the Shah.

'Have anything to do with the Brits and Americans buying a bunch of politicians off and deadlocking the government?'
Are you denying this part?
SpontaneousFlame@reddit
You know that the US and Israel have admitted funding regime change inside Iran for decades, right? Is this one of those special rules that one side gets to break but the other shouldn’t?

Lol cool cool

The title could be better but I don't think there are many people who would read this title/article and start blaming Iran for the fallout.
Melded1@reddit
Then you do not understand how consent is manufactured and how the language of conflict is used to influence people's opinions. There is a large body of research on this. Media framing shapes interpretation, emotion, and blame. It’s not about people consciously deciding to blame Iran, it’s about how the wording removes clarity around who did what.
The headline talks about an “Iran war” and focuses on aid being disrupted, but it doesn’t clearly explain the chain of events or who caused the situation. It focuses on food shortages, medicine, and millions affected and when you strip out the context around it, people are left with a simple association: Iran is named, and negative consequences follow.
So even if no one explicitly says “Iran is to blame,” the framing still nudges people that way by leaving out cause and focusing only on the fallout. That’s how this kind of wording works, it shapes the takeaway without stating it outright. This is everywhere, in every show you watch and article you read.

While I agree that the tone and language of the title can create a problematic framing in this case, you have to also consider the wider context. The AP is still part of the western media ecosystem so it's subject to their biases to some degree. But it is also one of the most independent journalist organisations and has consistently been able to deliver some of the most scathing critiques of Israeli/US military adventurism the past few years. To completely disown it because of some slightly problematic use of language in their titles is throwing the baby with the bathwater.

A Study of Bias in the Associated Press. I am not completely throwing out everything they do, i am pointing to the language they are using and how they are using it on this article. There are many other examples in the above article. That does not mean everything they do is bad, it does mean that they have a bias that you should be aware of and that that bias serves to obfuscate the truth at times.
reflexive-polytope@reddit
Just this minor change would improve the title significantly. Replace "Iran war" with "war on Iran".

US/Israel isn't forcing Iran to close the strait, it's something they've done willingly. So yeah it is their fault if they close it off to all traffic, including food and medicine.
mostard_seed@reddit
Yeah they should really just roll over and not try to apply any pressure they could.
Firecracker048@reddit
So now we're admitting cutting off aid and humanitarian supplies is a legit tactic to apply pressure. I'm glad you agreed with Israel in cutting off aid into the Gaza strip. Logic applies both ways not just one
Melded1@reddit
You're using logical fallacies here. You're either doing it intentionally or you just don't understand; either way, you're wrong.
mostard_seed@reddit
Really not at all what I said here but you do you.

I’m currently being bombed by Iran. Fucking hate that regime.
But you’re as smart as a bag of rocks. This is their only lever. Of course they’re going to pull it.
That was clear to anyone who knew anything about the Gulf. they’ve done it before.
Trump got led down the path by bibi and many more people are going to die the longer this goes on. Guess that’s why he fired all the generals telling him so.
Remind me the objectives of the war again? Destroy the nuclear capability they destroyed last July? Open the strait that was open before?
Fuzzy9770@reddit
They are forcing Iran to fight for its existence. Whatever Iran does is a consequence of this. Which was very much expected by most of the world I guess.
Let's imagine that you are from Iran, would you just give up to be invaded shortly after?
yo_soy_soja@reddit
Shame on the US and Israel.
Iran should use every means to pressure the US, Israel, and their allies to end this nonsensical war.
MelodiusRA@reddit
Why weren’t the aid groups complaining that the lack of Internet and roaming militia forces were preventing them from administering aid to civilians?
Sounds like they aren’t actually interested in the civilians. Just being a mouthpiece for regime apologists.
DerCatrix@reddit
Iran becoming another Palestine? I wonder who could’ve predicted that
Naurgul@reddit (OP)
Not what the article is saying. It says that because of the closed routes, including the strait of Hormuz, humanitarian organisations are having trouble reaching people in need.
DerCatrix@reddit
I said becoming because it’s not as bad as Gaza is yet but the same people have the same intent as Gaza
Apprehensive_Emu9240@reddit
Not really. Gaza got destroyed and invaded. Iran will only really get destroyed, except may be a few tiny islands at some point.
DerCatrix@reddit
Hegseth fired 12 generals that were resisting a ground assault while Israeli talk show hosts are saying we need to drop a nuke on them.
Trump wants a long and brutal war to satisfy his religious terrorist base and to supply a cover for stopping the midterms.
Apprehensive_Emu9240@reddit
Trump is sounding more and more like Hitler, who famously screwed up the Battle of Britain by stopping his generals from bombing military targets and focused on civilian targets. Politics and military strategy really don't belong together
DerCatrix@reddit
I have no doubt that Trump will lose in the end. Whether it’s this war or his administration’s treasonous ambition domestically.
I am terrified about the loss of life between now and then. Iranian, Israeli, American, Lebanese, I don’t care.
