I didn't appreciate this until I found out my biological father was a straight up white-white green-eyed Cypriot. I've always looked 'Mediterranean'. And I realised 'white' wasn't a racial category but a purity test when I noticed that nobody would ever correct me if I called myself Turkish, Middle-Eastern, West Asian, Mediterranean, literally anything, because half of me is - but if I call myself 'white' the eyebrows immediately raise.
