Hi - currently looking to leave apartment life for a house. What is the best way to locate available homes?

Realtor.com or the app has a section for rent. Lots of homes available for rent listed.

We rent long term and we drove around and saw a for rent sign, called and we have the chillest landlord ever.

I recommend driving around to look at yard signs but for the purposes of getting to know some of the Project Management companies that support the areas you are wanting to move. Then watch their websites for new inventory. Redfine, Zillow, Homes.com type sites are obvious mainstays - thats how Ive found all of my house rentals in Dallas.
Trying to find an independent owner on Nextdoor vs working with a PM company is a mixed bag - they can often be worse with professional boundaries and the business partnership - and thats what it is.
I know this wasnt part of the question but also really think about the extra costs that come with a house vs an apartment - are you responsible for lawn care or is the owner? Do you have to soak the foundation at your own cost? Is there a washer drying provided or do you have to buy those? Some rental houses don't even come with fridges.

We went through Ebby Halliday with pretty good luck - fairly reasonably priced house, we take care of lawn and misc. maintenance, they take care of the big stuff (with alright response times). We don’t pay any fees, just the rent that was advertised

Drive around neighborhoods where you want to live and look for rental signs. You want to try and find property that’s owned and managed by an individual and not a management company. You can often find rental property well below market rate this way.

Good luck. Even a good portion (most?) individuals use management companies to do background checks, applications, maintenance, etc driving up rental cost significantly.
Not trying to poo poo your input, but just saying it's a challenge.
