Ebike recommendation.

I am looking for a recommendation for an ebike purchase. I am buying for my 13 year old. Ohio laws state a class 2 if under 16. which maxes out at 20 mph. I talked to a local police officer, and If it can be locked out of going the full 28 mph speed, that it would comply as well. So I am looking for something that meets those criteria.
Budget: $700
Aesthetics: Dirt-bike adjacent
BassesNBikes@reddit
It's wild that a police officer would share their ignorance of the law with you as legal advice.
hroaks@reddit
The officer told him the state law correctly. The law is dumb and parents should practice common sense
BassesNBikes@reddit
False
hroaks@reddit
True. State law limits on Ohio are for class 3 ebikes. There are no age limits for class 1 or 2.
BassesNBikes@reddit
False. There is no magic switch that converts a class 3 eBIke into a class 1 or 2 eBIke on the fly.
hroaks@reddit
Here you go. Magic.
BassesNBikes@reddit
Legally, there is no magic switch that converts a class 3 eBIke into a class 1 or 2 eBIke on the fly.
hroaks@reddit
Sure thing buddy
BassesNBikes@reddit
The concession of the ignorant loser.
hroaks@reddit
I concede that you lack both basic reading skills and the ability to admit when you are wrong so I rather not waste my time
BassesNBikes@reddit
https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-revised-code/section-4511.522
(A)(1) On and after January 1, 2020, manufacturers and distributors of electric bicycles shall permanently affix a label, in a prominent location, to each electric bicycle. The label shall specify whether the electric bicycle is a class 1, class 2, or class 3 electric bicycle, the top assisted speed that the electric bicycle is capable of reaching, and the motor wattage of the electric bicycle.
(2) No person shall modify an electric bicycle in a manner that changes the top assisted speed that the electric bicycle is capable of reaching unless the person also modifies the label required under division (A)(1) of this section to reflect the modification.
You were bleating something about illiteracy and being incapable of admitting you're wrong?
hroaks@reddit
Oh wow you're so smart big guy! Have a cookie
BassesNBikes@reddit
Ignorance Fought
You're Welcome!
hroaks@reddit
Can you try rereading that really slow and tell me why the cop is right? It's not that hard
BassesNBikes@reddit
How about you tell me how the 28mph top assisted speed can be "locked out@ so that the user can not re-enable it when out of sight of law enforcement. See all the words about that procedure requiring that the bike be officially reclassified and stickered with its new class and more power? Does your "magic button" do that?
hroaks@reddit
You are pulling words out of your ass that the cop and the law you copied and pasted never said
The cop never said the lock out is to prevent the user from re-enabling it when out of sight of law enforcement. And reclassification isn't this whole complicated procedure you're making it seem
Here's how easy it is to follow the law:
Buy any class 1 or 2 ebike for your 13 year old. IF it has magic button, do not touch magic button.
After turning 16 years of age, you can legally go into the settings and touch magic button to increase max speed from 20 to 28 mph and then slap a class 3 sticker on that bike. This whole process takes 20 seconds.
if pushing a few buttons and putting sticker on a bike seem overly complicated to you, ask a first grader for help.

Looks like the amflow, but this one cant go up to 1000w.

GoTrax F2V2.
I’m waiting on mine to arrive.
You’ll never get a suggestion in this sub because everyone is $1,000 minimum. Not everyone has that kind of money.
Also, no comment on if a child should have an e-bike or not. That’s a preference of parenting style and child maturity.
mattyrain@reddit
Absolutely everyone has that kind of money. This sub is just full of people who don't care about bikes.
o_Divine_o@reddit
Ignore state law, the rules for ebikes are written by people who are incompetent.
I would go full suspension, mid drive, 52v.
Specifically bbshd motor
Hills in pa and what i know of Ohio are too extreme for a hub motor.
Mid drive does mean one needs to down shift at stops. In a car you'll stall staring out in 5th gear, a bike you run the risk of snapping the chain and damaging the gears.
Good learning experience for driving a manual vehicle.
Do Ignore the majority replying here. They're clearly retarded and know nothing about cycling and should never procreate. It's a parent's job to help a child learn, grow, have experiences, and given the tolls to find themselves. The simpleton fuck faces responding think a person 3 years away from driving a multiple ton vehicle on the road should have no experience before reaching 16. That is the mentality of a retarded person that should be getting a disability check for their sub 70 iq.
I don't know any child that's waited that long to drive anything powered by gas. Think I was 9ish when I rode my first dirtbike (125 & 250) also rode quads that easily did 80 mph..
The longer you keep a child from knowledge and experience, the dumber that child will be. That's just unequivocal fact. If you'd prefer to raise a dumb fuck like the majority of the replies here, ignore my reply.
Knight_Watch@reddit
And the people spewing your side of the story all sound like you. I’ll let the OP decide who she is more similar to.
o_Divine_o@reddit
I'm borderline genius, psych evaluation this year.
I'm happy there are others out there, as the dumb vastly outnumber us.
Sincerely, a racist against willfully being incompetent.
Edgewyse@reddit (OP)
Absolutely wild statement to make. Announcing yourself as a genius and racist in the same sentence while trying to convince somebody of your pov takes a special level of social detachment. Im glad you are getting a psych eval, I would be interested in reading the results.
o_Divine_o@reddit
Borderline depending on amount of sleep I'm able to get the days before testing and if I remember to take my adhd medicine.
If one is self aware and honest, we all have racist aspects. racism is a form of intolerance, specifically defined as an unwillingness to accept or respect individuals for xyz reason.
You see it everywhere and the easiest example is * american democrats and republicans, (not all but many) * older generations VS younger, the amount of shit talking i hear as a genx about millennials is absurd.
I understand why you would say it's a wild statement. People generally use their feelings with words like racist, rather than the multiple definitions and use cases.
Reddit is the one platform I permit myself to be toxically-absurd. I'm not always abrasive, but incompetence leans me into that mode, and there's a lot of incompetence in the replies.
Edgewyse@reddit (OP)
Race is quite literally a qualifier for the word racist. You have said that you are racist, I don't have to guess what that means. I also don't have to wonder why the 'borderline'.
o_Divine_o@reddit
Perhaps prejudice is a more fitting word these days. Dictionary from the 90s and early '00 listed not only race but religion, groups, etc..
Not that it matters much, context is there defining the particulars.
Separate-Command1993@reddit
Finally some sense here, me and my 10yo are currently ripping up trails on our emotos. Literally about to hop on the bike as I type this
o_Divine_o@reddit
Fantastic! Have yourself a glorious day of fun and bonding.
Separate-Command1993@reddit
Had a great time!
Schemeckles@reddit
Don't buy an ebike for a 13 year old.
/end tread.
Edgewyse@reddit (OP)
I hear what you are saying. We have gone on rides using bikes of this speed, and it has been plenty safe. I don't think it is fair to make that judgement as an outside party without knowing the entire situation, but you're concern is definitely noted.
o_Divine_o@reddit
Pedaling at 20 without a motor is 4th gear on my mtn bike (if I want high reps) or 5th if I want chill rotation. 7th is 30mph however I look like a cartoon holding that speed as it's built for torque not top end.
A 13 year old is 3 fucking years from driving a huge vehicle on the road. Why would you be so dumb as to suggest they don't start leaning now, with a bicycle? Dear god, the stupidity, spewing from that mentality challenged brain of yours. Do not for any reason procreate.
So happy to be a 1980 kid.. if i had someone like you as a parent, I'd likely never learn to be a responsible adult. Throw yourself into the back of a garbage truck, you're too useless as a human to be worth keeping alive.
Edgewyse@reddit (OP)
I'm not sure the hostility is needed. I agree that 20 is not that fast. I cruise at 14 on a road bike and top out over 30 on hills and such. I think responsibilities and safety are things that kids need exposure to.
o_Divine_o@reddit
It's not needed, but i enjoy being absurd to absurdity.
people that think 20 is too fast must not have ridden a bicycle. 5mph takes great effort to maintain balance to stay upright. Slow (under 10mph) is vastly more unsafe than above due to gyroscopic effect.
Schemeckles@reddit
I'm sorry for whatever mental illness you suffer from that triggers you so badly when suggested that parents keep their kids safe.
I hope you find the help you need.
Separate-Command1993@reddit
Ahhh another pro tip from a childless moron

chrispark70@reddit
Why does this 13 year old need an e-bike over a pedal bike?
IMHO, no normally abled 13 year old needs an e-bike and should not be given an e-bike. Not only do they not need electric assistance, they are too immature to deal with the speed and torque of electric assist.
Edgewyse@reddit (OP)
Understandable. Our town doesn't offer busses for school at his age and it's a little outside of walking distance, the school has a public sports facility and gym on the same "campus" which he spends time at for sports and pool. He's not a daredevil, but maybe I should reconsider a slower option.
chrispark70@reddit
If it is just a bit more than walking distance, a pedal bike will do. Another thing to consider here is theft. E-bikes are theft magnets, especially at a school where it will be sitting on a rack or something locked for 6-8 hours a day. Also, inclement weather, unless there is an indoor parking location. Keeping water out of the electronics may be an issue.
But primarily I don't think young people really need an e-bike. 13 year olds have boundless energy.
PreoccupiedParrot@reddit
"A little outside of walking distance" usually means "easily within biking distance". Ebikes can help a lot for longer commutes which would be a struggle or over an hour on a normal push bike, but if we're just talking in the order of a few miles then it's hardly worth it really.
o_Divine_o@reddit
You should consider not having an opinion. 13 is 3 fucking years from driving. throttle response is something one should get to know far before this age.
With all due disrespect. Don't spread your dna further, we have enough dumb fucks like you in the world.
Go be a dipshit locally, don't spread your incompetence online.
PreoccupiedParrot@reddit
Not an ebike for that money. Get an entry level hardtail mountain bike, pretty standard bikes for teenagers and you can have a lot of fun on them. And a decent helmet.
Edgewyse@reddit (OP)
I see many options in that range, you are saying none of them are worth getting at all? Based on what?
Z9Cubing@reddit
The most expensive component is the battery. Always.
When you get a cheap ebike you get a cheap battery, that means more danger when using and charging. I would recommend you get something more expensive so the bike doesnt suck and has a safe battery.
Or better yet, get them an analog bike, like a hardtail mtb.
Also class 2 has a throttle which is more dangerous than class 1. When pedaling your brain is being active so he will pay better attention.
And im saying this honestly, your 13 year old son doesnt need to go 32 kmh, 25 is enough to get him anywhere and it saves battery.
Edgewyse@reddit (OP)
The battery thing makes sense. He already has a nice manual bike, full face helmet and protection gear. I have experienced 20 mph on an electric bike and didn't feel like it was too dangerous. You're saying pedal assist only for 20 mph?
Z9Cubing@reddit
Yes, thats class 1. But if you think your son has the experience then i dont think its a very big issue, just be careful with what you give him.
Knight_Watch@reddit
Don’t.
Head-Owl7100@reddit
Thats the Going price for a pre-owned one on marketplace. Older bikes are 2 times as heavy as new ones
