And this shit sucks! Going back over the road soon!
oasuke@reddit
I did it for a few weeks as temp work, and I hated it because it was so damn boring. The yard I was at was so slow I would often sit for 4+ hours. Basically 90% of the work was done at the start of the shift and towards the end, and I could knock all those trailers out within 30 minutes. Time feels like it moves slower when you're sitting in the same spot all day. Felt like I was wasting my life away. I think it'd be the perfect job if you're close to retirement though.
JavyBarrera25@reddit
Been a yard dog 2 and 1/2 years now… I’m only around because we aren’t supervised, I’m off by 1pm, and we have hours of downtime and it’s just me and another guy who likes to work and not ever call off. My site is a hidden gem
potodev@reddit
Man, that sounds pretty nice. I would ride that out to retirement if I were you.
mute_salamander@reddit
What aspects of being a yard dog do you like and don’t like?
OwnSea3297@reddit (OP)
Being a yard dog itself isn’t that bad but the company I’m doing it for is hectic.. the micromanaging, 7 day 12 hour work weeks, not being able to communicate with the warehouse ppl or other drivers bcuz they don’t speak English
bentstrider83@reddit
Wonder if the warehouse workers work those same hours. I'm mentally getting to that point where 12 hours is unmanageable. Warehouse work seems cool. But if it's some crazy shifts like those I get trucking, nope.
Riyeko@reddit
Ah that's a warehouse issue, not a yard dogging issue.
I've been a yard dog for 6months and I love it. I talk to damn near everyone all the time and everyone is bilingual.
Also, if you can't speak to the people on the docks because there's a language barrier, how are you understanding where the trailers go? Doors, parking spaces, etc.
You have to be able to communicate with traffic so you don't put a trailer in the wrong spot.
OwnSea3297@reddit (OP)
My coworker translates for me
Pakman____@reddit
Translater app on your phone costs absolutely nothing.
OwnSea3297@reddit (OP)
Yeah that’s just not practical
Pakman____@reddit
Besides for being practical it's quick and efficient. But go on and continue having your coworkers translate for you lmfao.
Riyeko@reddit
Oh no dude.... No no no.
Go find another yard dog job man.theres better pay and a better environment out there. Holy shit.
Horus_Whistler@reddit
Wouldn't be a bad idea to learn the other language. It's a great way, not only to communicate with more people, but keeping that brain active learning new things. I'm halfway done with a third language and starting a fourth soon. It's good for you.
FWD_to_twin_turbo@reddit
Bilingual person here, it should never be necessary to learn another language to work and communicate in your own country, only in someone else's.
If i was back home and i had to learn another language just to work and understand my coworkers i'd be fucking pissed, but i moved to the USA and i spent years learning english to assimilate. That's just how it is.
3PoundsOfFlax@reddit
It's a free country and a free market. Corporations are free to hire whoever the fuck they want at whatever language skill they want. If you don't like it, start your own company and hire only fluent English speakers.
You don't have to "assimilate" to fucking anything or anyone in the United States of America. We are a free country.
FWD_to_twin_turbo@reddit
You prove why people think truckers are dumber than 2 sacks of shit trying to make friction in winter.
Many sectors such as trucking, CSRs, legal, HR and healthcare are required to speak english because it's mandated. If you've ever worked in a corporate landscape, doubt you have given your mental disposition, you'll also find pretty much anyone over middle manager being fluent in english as well. Assimilation isnt just for the comfort of the people living around you, you genuinely wont get far without it.
If you don't like it, go back to your own country, and if America is your country self deport to somewhere else so that the IQ median has a chance at ascending.
__The-1__@reddit
I taught the most successful trucker ive ever met how to actually read and write at age 60+. Man was Born in America, made millions and owned lots of land and ran his own peterbilt hauling cattle for 40+ years... idk how but he did it. Now he's saying this same bs lol
__The-1__@reddit
Oh americans love freedom, until it's someone else's freedom ofc.
Horus_Whistler@reddit
Didn't say it was necessary my guy. But you can't deny it helps.
Ayyeee_justin@reddit
Lmao thats gotta be hell
december151791@reddit
When you come across drivers who don't speak English, call your states commercial vehicle enforcement over there. Be part of the solution.
GreyGhost878@reddit
I don't think he means outside drivers. It sounds like he's talking about other employees at his warehouse.
Exciting_Argument529@reddit
I do it twice a week at the post office . Pay is good 39 an hour and maybe do 40 moves a day
olenamerikkalainen@reddit
Bruh, sweet gig
Responsible_Web5514@reddit
I'm switching back to driving too. They keep adding more and more on my plate. I work nonstop for hours and now they want me to clean the yard on my down time. Fuck off
ID_Poobaru@reddit
I’ve found Amazon yard dog work is a pretty healthy balance of OTR and jockey work.
Just wish Amazon would bump the pay a little
DonBoy30@reddit
I would’ve stayed on TOM indefinitely if not for Amazon being…Amazon. In my time there the hardest working people were pushed out for better pay or got fired for non-consequential and usually arbitrary safety violations. That left all the lazy people, because you have to actually work to break one of their bazillion policies.
ID_Poobaru@reddit
Yep. The policies just keep getting more restrictive and contradictory. They keep flip flopping on enforcement, but thankfully I have a good TAM that goes after the lazy ones first and will fight just about everything on Netradyne.
Once my wife finishes school for her BSN, I might consider looking for local work. Lot of the LTL guys that come through seem to enjoy their jobs.
Jonas_Venture_Sr@reddit
Benefits versus pay. Amazon has the benefits, other places have the pay. If you can actually show up to work on time, only take off when your sick, and like working OT, then I'd suggest taking your talents elsewhere.
A lot of people can't do that though, so Amazon is a good place for them.
ID_Poobaru@reddit
Yeah that’s where I’m at. The benefits are just too good to give up especially for how cheap it is to cover my wife and I on everything
Jonas_Venture_Sr@reddit
Yea, while my opinion of Amazon isn't super high, I think TOM is one of the best in the ops departments. People in TOM, for the most part, want to be there.
ProfoundOverlord42@reddit
I mean Amazon paid me to get a CDL on their dime, Okie paid for a college degree. That company is a great launching point. It is what you make it. Got a union job and they were stoked I had a CDL already
ohhrangejuice@reddit
Get a union in there
SlothyTendecies@reddit
Yard dog jobs seem to be hit or miss. The guys I talked to at well managed warehouses wouldn’t give their job up for anything.
Adventurous_Shock338@reddit
Omg it's Tico! My boy looks scary, especially at night. TJ is cuteee!
SeaRow556@reddit
So its not a 9-5? 7 days on 12 hour shifts, and let me guess you get paid cents per mile.... jk
I'd probably do it, but I'm thinking about moving to some place in PA and do final mile box truck or van work in a specific city/town i just love how everything seems to be made for walking and its just so, peaceful and inviting to me. Not Philadelphia though.
If you can tell me what its like on a pay scale i might do that instead but by the sounds of it i wont like it.
Currently otr floater so and I'm getting sick of it after so many years
SpaceTruckin6969@reddit
Who let the dogs outttttttttt?
decaboniized@reddit
I liked being a yard dog simply because it taught me really well how to back up prior to driving.
dj91867@reddit
Agreed, give me a hole for a trailer and I can get it in regardless if in day cab or sleeper!!!
N7-Eschaton@reddit
Those Tico's are great though.
Other-Title-6879@reddit
Are there yard dog positions for CDL b ? Just asking cuz I don’t know but that would be better than chasing peoples schedule like charter buses.
HowlingWolven@reddit
You don’t need a CDL to drive a shunt on someone’s property.
Other-Title-6879@reddit
Thank you. All the position I see have CDL A as requirement. I’ll keep checking
ParticularArrival111@reddit
That's more of an insurance or company qualification. Legally you don't even need a driver's license to move trucks on private property.
stripperjnasty@reddit
Nobody noticed he said 7 12s?!!!
HowlingWolven@reddit
I see the problem, you’re in a piece of shit Tico. Get yaself a Kalmar Ottawa T2.
heramoth@reddit
I work in LTL I split my shifts doing dock work and yard hostling. It works for me. All of my assignments come through a tablet so I keep interaction down to a minimum with zero supervision as long as the work gets done
Pitiful_Yogurt_5276@reddit
I’m a newbie and cannot for the life of me find a local job that will hire me. It’s so unfair that hostler doesn’t count as experience driving tractors.
adore_alphi@reddit
people hate on megas but if u can get on a local dedicated account with them it’s actually not that bad
firemarshalbill316@reddit
This is true. New drivers listen to all the bad things about megas and never apply. Everyone's situation will be different and it depends on you and how well you communicate your desires. If they match up with a company's your good.
Pay isn't so good but there aren't many megas closing their doors and leaving drivers stranded.
Choose your own pain mate.
Ayyeee_justin@reddit
Terminal you based out of and what account
Pitiful_Yogurt_5276@reddit
I’m trying :(
I had an interview for Schnieder and they filled it that morning.
Kkalemauser@reddit
Some LTL companies will let you run a forklift or a yard dog after your shift.
Kkalemauser@reddit
Fonda an LTL company. Some companies will let you do a run then let you run a yard dog for a few hours, or run a forklift.
fartspatula@reddit
Your post summoned the dogs!
SubzeroWins1-0@reddit
Unpopular opinion but I enjoyed my time being a yard dog. Work unsupervised most of the time. Did 4 hours work in a 8/10 hour shift cause I was good at it. If only it paid a bit more I’d stick around
soldierside55@reddit
Loved being a yard dog but between capping hrs and not great pay I had to leave
Marmatus@reddit
I thought yard jockeying was fun for like the first 6 months, and mind numbing after that. lol
CannibalAnus@reddit
I done it for intermodal, it was great but people fucked it up. If we didnt have a train coming for the day, we could sleep if a driver didnt need help swapping or finding a trailer
Jermaphobe456@reddit
Not everyone can do it, and that's okay.
justhereforthefunnyZ@reddit
I enjoyed being a jockey just didn’t like the pay.
OldManSeamus@reddit
Understandable. Those Tico trucks suck.
