Movie soundtracks - I miss those tapes
Posted by adoryable12@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 74 comments
When I was a teen, movie soundtracks were a constant source of driving music - they were SO good. You had retro ones like Stand By Me and The Big Chill and then news ones like Some Kind of Wonderful. Maybe their are good ones now, but it’s not the same - songs that were the acoustic background of a story. I still have muscle memory of leaning over into the passenger footwell to grab a tape to pop it in.
What is a movie soundtrack you loved?

Iron Eagle, UHF, The Mask, Batman and Robin, Mortal Kombat, The Mask of Zorro, and several others. There's a whole Queen album in there that was the soundtrack to Highlander.
I'm counting freshman year of college in there because I was still buying soundtracks at that point.

My wife and I watched Singles for the first time last night, and the soundtrack is the best part of that movie.

Top Gun.
Tim-no@reddit
I liked the movie, but I loved the soundtrack!
phillymjs@reddit
The first album I ever bought was the Ghostbusters soundtrack, on cassette. I still have it.
The two volumes of the Dazed & Confused soundtrack are pretty great, but they're basically a Time-Life "Rock Hits of the 70s" compilation.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High had some bangers that made it into my default playlist. So did Go, Strange Days, and Hackers.

I had Top Gun and my parents had The Big Chill. They were played until they quit working or were lost. My Mom may have actually upgraded hers to CD...it was a great soundtrack even if it is boomer music.

Love Theme, Tears in Rain and from Blade Runner are pretty good. End title is quintessential Vangelis sci fi.
Vangelis sure had a string of great instrumentals in the 80's.

Heavy Metal and Blues Brothers soundtracks probably the best around.

So I married an Axe Murderer. I got the tape for free from a radio station that was hosting something at a gas station, where you could possibly win a free tank of gas. I did not get the gas, but was given the tape.

Two I haven’t seen mentioned yet:
Forrest Gump has an amazing soundtrack. Fried Green Tomatoes’ soundtrack is a fun one.
Honestly I have always loved soundtracks, sometimes as much as the movies themselves.

When I was maybe 13 or 14, I had The Lost Boys on repeat on my Walkman.

Pulp Fiction Soundtrack. Of course Singles as previously mentioned. I also remember Friday Soundtrack being huge, but it wasn't my cuppa joe.

Whether you like him as an individual or a filmmaker or not, Quentin Tarantino has a great ability to put together some great soundtracks. Pulp Fiction, Death Proof, and Kill Bill (pt.1) are good examples IMO.
dkstr419@reddit
My parents (and grandparents) had movie soundtracks in their record collection, so I grew up listening to Lawrence of Arabia and El Cid. I still love them. I still collect soundtracks. In some cases, the soundtrack was better than the movie. There’s a college radio station in California that has a regularly scheduled show dedicated to movie soundtracks Norman Bates Memorial Soundtrack Show
