Asking as a no-knowledge visitor here - why is the lid up on take-off? (I guess it's a canopy but still wondering why it's open). How does the speed not snap it off? Appreciate your expertise!
As the other guy said, that’s the lift fan intake. But to add to that, it’s not snapping off because the aircraft’s forwards velocity is “practically nothing”.

That’s the lift fan intake. You really think a fighter would take off with the canopy open?? 😆
altitude-adjusted@reddit
I clearly don't which is why I asked?
Jazzlike_Climate4189@reddit
Look up the F-35B and you’ll see how it has a lift fan to land vertically.

Ah, thank you for the explanation. Not knowing the part is one thing but knowing the forward velocity is minimal is most helpful.
signitr_sideways@reddit
It’s not the canopy, it’s the lift fan door that provides the vertical thrust. It’s where the air is sucked in for that lift.

Its droid spot is empty… where is R2D2??

Is that hot exhaust or reheat coming out the tailpipe? It looks like afterburner but seems excessive for horizontal/vertical takeoff and landings.
CptnHamburgers@reddit
I'm guessing IR fuckery makes it look like afterburner, but it isn't.

No A/B used on carrier takeoff.

I hate the F35.
But fuck that's beautiful
CPT-DED-PUUL@reddit (OP)
Oooo let’s talks lol. Why do you hate it?
TurboThibaut@reddit
Stupid reasons. I'm french. I think the Rafale is the best plane ever made.
Do I have arguments? No
Can you change my mind? No
But fuck. F35 operations have aesthetics. And I hate it
CPT-DED-PUUL@reddit (OP)
Hahahah ok I understand and respect that and I wasn’t gonna try to change your mind cause I know how plane nerds are. I was genuinely just curious.

Agree. It’s growing on me though.
