When did we exactly stop that?
JuJu_Wirehead@reddit
Never did. That was some preppie shit.
MorningBrewNumberTwo@reddit
Still do!
Watermelon_Sugar44@reddit
I was a chubby kid. I never tucked my tee shirt.
Confirmationbias10@reddit
I will only tuck an undershirt if I'm layering in the winter and nothing else ever.
wesweslaco@reddit
This was one of many reasons I did not enjoy Boys State. They made us tuck in our T-shirts all week.
kevininthefoothills@reddit
I never stopped
Fudloe@reddit
Still do. And my jeans come up past my navel. (When my weight allows). Boot cut, Campus boots and big belt buckles.
It may be 2026 out there. In my house, it's 1975.
Chankla_Rocket@reddit
I love the boot cut!
Fudloe@reddit
I only wear boots (with occasional Chucks and Vans). I gotta have 'em.
L_wanderlust@reddit
Boot cut is back in sort of. Either that or wideleg. Apparently skinny jeans are what is out 🤪
Fudloe@reddit
I found a stash of 70's flared Wrangler's and Levi's. So...
itgoesineasy@reddit
In the 80’s we all tucked in our t-shirts.
brumac44@reddit
In Canada, we'd do the "Gretzky" tuck, one side tucked, one side free.
Accurate_Weather_211@reddit
Never tucked a t-shirt, neither did any of my friends. Southwest kids.
itgoesineasy@reddit
We were Midwest
HighBiased@reddit
No we didn't
WokeAssMessiah@reddit
What? No.
theblisters@reddit
French tuck 4life!!!
Mr_Stike@reddit
That's one I absolutely do not get.
theblisters@reddit
Full tuck looks goofy
No tuck is for fat guys
French tuck is the ever so slightly fashion in between
go_west_til_you_cant@reddit
Same!
Duran518@reddit
Yep! Then we would loosen outwards to make it look”cool”.
OldNorthBridge@reddit
You had to get “the tuck” just right!
Duran518@reddit
Oh for sure, because if not you would literally take for ever, to get it just right.
OldNorthBridge@reddit
Happy cake day, Broseph!
L_wanderlust@reddit
Haha yes!
GelatinousGoober@reddit
Nope. Never
drewcorleone@reddit
I did this in HS. Cringe.
Kryceks-Revenge@reddit
No. I didn’t want to look like a shacklee salesman or youth pastor.
niff007@reddit
No. You must be a NARC
Acrobatic_Ocelot_461@reddit
Or a dork.
5um-n3m0@reddit
I never did.
But peg-rolling my jeans/pants...definitely
Not_High_Maintenance@reddit
Who tucked in their t-shirts?
L_wanderlust@reddit
Preppies - tuck it and then pull out just a bit to make it sort of “flop” over the top of your pants. Not untucking it in that manner and just going full tuck was nerdy 😆
Mr-Snarky@reddit
Or, if you had an Italian grandmother who carried a wooden spoon in her purse....
Mr-Snarky@reddit
"Dressed up" is still defined in my head by having your shirt tucked in. Doesn't matter the shirt; doesn't matter the occasion. Must. Be. Tucked. In.
Grafakos@reddit
I don't recall ever doing this.
IntelligentNovel1967@reddit
Nope, never.
The_Fugue@reddit
Never have.
oldrpger@reddit
Ditto
drtythmbfarmer@reddit
used to not, now I do.
I usually wear a button up shirt over a t-shirt anyway.
Rhapdodic_Wax11235@reddit
Still do. Only fat people leave their shirts untucked.
prayingforrain2525@reddit
And rightly so.
viking12344@reddit
I have noticed this....
prayingforrain2525@reddit
When it proved uncomfortable for a lot of people or didn't have to be formal.
_53-@reddit
Still do.
SunfishB@reddit
Why was everything so much more formal? Tucked Ts, no swearing, etc etc. nowadays the President dropping F-bombs on Easter. Wild.
L_wanderlust@reddit
Does it matter if he says fuck today instead of tomorrow? It’s just a word and today is just another day 😂
Chankla_Rocket@reddit
There's a recent pic floating around the interwebs of Harrison Ford in a tucked black t and jeans, beard and sunglasses. He looked pretty badass to me. I think it all depends on what kind of shape you're in and how many fucks you have to give.
viking12344@reddit
Yeah pretty much. Imagine basing how cool you think you are by how you wear a T-shirt lol.
HighBiased@reddit
Nope. First generation not to do have to tuck in everything.
Careless_Bar_5920@reddit
I still french-tuck my long baggy ones.
Big_Parfait6268@reddit
Always tucked them, partly because they were usually oversized, but mostly because my mom insisted (and still does), that it makes you look “uneducated” to have an untucked shirt. Pretty sure it was about my first day away from home that I untucked my shirt and have never tucked one in again.
2outhits@reddit
Nope. Always remember not tucking in my t-shirt because all the olds wanted me to. That was gen x, doing the opposite of what our parents wanted.
MirkatteWorld@reddit
My Silent Gen dad was constantly complaining about young people with their "shirt tails hanging out."
2outhits@reddit
Exactly! My grandpa used to say the same.
Correct-Condition-99@reddit
Never. My parents actually tried to make me wear only collared shirts "out in public." Tucked in, of course. That didn't work out, and I've only ever tucked my shirt in when it was specifically required (jacket and tie, employment, etc,,)
TheNolaCatLady@reddit
Nope! Tshirts are very casual attire. I would never tuck in a tshirt. About the only people I see walking around with tshirts tucked in are fat guys. It looks like they are transporting a baby hippo in a hammock attached to their waist.
KittiesRule1968@reddit
No
WileyCoyote7@reddit
Nope. Had to do (tshirt tucked underneath outer shirt) it in the military when in uniform so any chance I got ofherwise I was, and still am, untucked.
mrepa1369@reddit
We definitely tucked our t's in the 90's. Gap jeans, Jeans belt,Doc's, white t-shirt. Chef's kiss.
Perle1234@reddit
I still tuck my tshirt lol. Not around the house but if I go to the store or smth. Lol old habits die hard and I don’t like to look too schleppy.
keirmeister@reddit
Hell, I still sport the popped collar because 80’s douchebag chick is making a real comeback!
ghjm@reddit
We were supposed to stop?
Defiant_Network_3069@reddit
I never did.
fuzzyedges1974@reddit
Nope. Never tucked in a t-shirt. I had a friend in high school who did, and I gave him no end of shit for it. Looked like a dork. Well, he was a dork. We were all dorks, tbh. But at least I didn’t tuck in my t-shirts. Like a dork.
noise_generator1979@reddit
Fellow dork. Gotta take a victory wherever you can get it! I was pretty anti tuck myself.
EducationalOutcome26@reddit
you mean when did you stop... ME never, I would no more walk around in an untucked shirt than I would with my fly open. there are exceptions, a tennis shirt, a hawaiian shirt or anything made to be worn loosely. but if if is see a grown ass man walking round with a shirt not tucked in neatly I automatically put him in the sloppy MF'er who doesn't have his act together category and any interaction with such people is viewed thru that lens. . its 4 decades of school, military, police and business training that doesn't go away.
Mr_Stike@reddit
"there are exceptions, a tennis shirt, a hawaiian shirt or anything made to be worn loosely. "
Like a T-shirt?
Reebatnaw@reddit
Guess I’m a sloppy mf
EducationalOutcome26@reddit
if you want to be perceived that way thats your buisness.
Reebatnaw@reddit
I really don’t care what people think. I had to look professional at work. I’m retired now and enjoying it. I haven’t tucked in a shirt, got a haircut or shaved since my last day at work. I dress for comfort not for other people’s approval
Mofiremofire@reddit
Where I live you’re definitely being judged if you walk around with a polo or button down untucked.
Moody_GenX@reddit
I haven't tucked a shirt in since my father's funeral in 2018. Where I live it's hot and humid but the locals judge you if you wear flip flops or sandals if you're a man.
Mofiremofire@reddit
I grew up in Florida on the coast and you wore flip flops or sperrys 99% of the year. Only shirts I wouldn’t tuck in were t shirts or linen button downs.
It’s hot and humid where I live now, thank god for the newer nice looking athletic polos cause in summer the cotton polos stick to me like glue when I sweat.
Total_Employment_146@reddit
I stopped when I realized how bad it looks on my high waisted torso ... pry in my early 20's. Now I work in corporate land with a bunch of dudes (I'm F) and they are obsessed with tucked in shirts as being "professional", and yeah I guess that's the standard for business attire. I know it's different for women, but it totally lives rent free in my head. 😳
PahzTakesPhotos@reddit
My husband still tucks in his t-shirts.
I never thought it was a Gen-X thing, I thought it was the military thing.
Silly-Shoulder-6257@reddit
I thought it was the fashion. I used to wear a belt and tucked in my shirt and stopped when I gained weight. And then everyone started half tucking. Now I have no clue what’s in style!
Mr_Stike@reddit
Fuck the tuck.
crs1904@reddit
How are ya now?
Mr_Stike@reddit
Good n you?
crs1904@reddit
Oh, not s'bad.
LevelPerception4@reddit
On the rare occasions I tucked in any kind of shirt, I always bloused it out to cover part of my ass, and usually put a jacket on over it. Mid-hip tops were the sweet spot: covered part of my ass yet not long enough to cling to it and inadvertently highlight it in its full glory.
Even though my ass is now the preferred shape and size, I still reflexively check every outfit “to see if it makes my ass look big.” Scars from the 80s body ideal run deep.
fumbs@reddit
I stopped when shirts got long enough to cover my body. I have a long torso and the shirts used to be a lot shorter. Unfortunately we are going back to short shirts, so I will probably start again.
Ninja187@reddit
Probably went nice with tight rolled jeans
bigwomby@reddit
I’m 55 and can honestly say I haven’t tucked in any shirt for a while - not that I don’t want to, it’s just… hard.
Jay4usc@reddit
Untucked shirts started with GenXers
spavolka@reddit
Not this one. Nerds did.
UrsaMajor7th@reddit
Only when wearing a suit, and not always then.
MutedAdvisor9414@reddit
If I mean business, it is tucked in. I wear a belt. Never tucked without a belt, I am not LD
teatabletea@reddit
LD?
MutedAdvisor9414@reddit
Learning Disabled, is how the kids' classes with special needs were called in elementary school, 1980s
teatabletea@reddit
Thanks.
MutedAdvisor9414@reddit
"Tucking in a shirt, without a belt, is r****ded behavior," was basically common sense when I was a kid. US Air Force town. When I first started school, they still used the R slur in school. They stopped using it long before it was banned. The classes were called LD, so I used the euphemism for my joking recollection of what it was like to be me as a boy.
fattfreddy1@reddit
I’m 54. I haven’t tucked in a t-shirt for at least 44 years.
TapeFlip187@reddit
lol no, do you?\ 🤣
general-illness@reddit
Left side only
Hefty_Principle700@reddit
The Gretzky
jingowatt@reddit
French tuck!
EnoughEstate7483@reddit
Never tucked a t-shirt in.
Roosevelt2000@reddit
When our jeans got skinny.
We used to wear pants that had pleats in the front, and we tucked in our shirts and wore a belt. Then we went to tight fitting, lower rise jeans that we wore a longer shirt over.
RobActionTributeBand@reddit
Hell the fuck no.
Real-Emu507@reddit
No. Never
RolandSnowdust@reddit
I know exactly when the untucked shirt phase began - fall of 2005. I had just separated from my wife and was crashing at my cousin's place. He was an aspiring comedian. We went bar hopping and he created a character called "Untucked Shirt Guy". Wasn't really funny, but it was a commentary on a trend.
NeverEverMaybe0_0@reddit
😒
Why-did-i-reas-this@reddit
I remember some guys at my work did the untucked shirt thing back in 2002 in Calgary. So it was definitely around in the fashion forward areas before that.
Proper_Hedgehog3579@reddit
My t shirt is tucked in right now😛
therealgookachu@reddit
My husband still does.
BrilliantWeb@reddit
After reading this thread I'm trying it tucked in, and it just looks stupid. I'm now the guy in the progressive insurance Dr Rick commercials. I. Just. Can't.
Proud-Zebra9487@reddit
NEVER!!!
jenorama_CA@reddit
Oh my goodness, in HS there was a girl that used to tuck in sweatshirts and then later I worked with a guy that did the same thing. Weird as hell.
Throw8976m@reddit
it accentuated the boobs lol Paired it with rolled short sleeves...
refuz04@reddit
I don’t know but my kids a shirt tucker and I hate it.
escargotini@reddit
Practically_Hip@reddit
So many embarrassing photos from that era, along with the rolled jeans.
flyboy_za@reddit
Depends on the occasion and the shirt.
T-shirt tucked in just seems nerdy 19 times out of 20.
PabloDabscovar@reddit
No. I never tucked. It’s lame then and now.
tbodillia@reddit
Shirts are tucked in with long pants, untucked with shorts.
More_Pineapple3585@reddit
even then, only when a belt is worn
AtomicGrendel@reddit
For me, it depends on the layering. If the T shirt is the top layer, untucked. If the T shirt is the bottom layer, even if the top shirt is worn open or unbuttoned, I tuck I the T shirt.
aduirne@reddit
I remember tucking my oversized Forenza t shirts into my Jams and the blushing them out a bit. Spent a ridiculous amount of time doing it too.
GunnCelt@reddit
Since I got out of the Army, the only time I tuck in a shirt is when I wear a kilt, funeral or wedding. Sometimes on the gun rang, depending on what holster I’m wearing.
cleg74@reddit
I still do if I am wearing jeans or pants, not if I am wearing shorts and until right this second, I had never thought about that or why.
Hedonistic_Yinzer@reddit
I think this is shirt dependent. All my shirts are a tall or a 36/37. If I wear a normal button down dress shirt untucked the tails hang down past my crotch. It looks like an apron. So those get tucked in and buttoned up, but not to the top unless wearing a tie.
I have several flannel shirts that do not have tails, but are square cut on the bottom. These, as well as Hawaiian shirts, do not get tucked and are only buttoned the first button or two.
T-Shirts are almost always tucked in, going to the gym being the exception. I have taken lately to wearing a sport coat over a t-shirt and the better half likes the look.
Of special note... A white wife beater is always tucked into cut off jean shorts with white New Balance tennis shoes.
Senior_Reaction2974@reddit
Maybe when the pants started sagging
worstpartyever@reddit
Before I had Gerda the Gut, I tucked regularly
wcm48@reddit
I remember in 5th or 6th grade it became a thing to button all the buttons on a polo shirt.
My dad short circuited. “But, but… don’t button the top button, that’s what the nerds do”
JoyDVeeve@reddit
My husband still does
Guidance-Still@reddit
Still do
Waffuru@reddit
Depending on the job we have, we still do.
ZombieButch@reddit
lol, never did that. Only tucked in any shirt when I absolutely had to.
Phobos1982@reddit
I still do, depending on the specifics.
diedforyourzyns@reddit
Never did. The biggest douche in my HS did that and I did not want to be associated with him.
DaddyOhMy@reddit
trUth_b0mbs@reddit
never; I still tuck my shirts into my underwear lol
New-Sheepherder2239@reddit (OP)
Ha! I’m an over the drawers guy though
Mom2Dos@reddit
Yep, tucked it into my shorts and pulled some back out to achieve the perfect drape overhang.
LikesPez@reddit
You blouse your tshirts too.
Mom2Dos@reddit
Yes! Couldn’t think of the right term!
JohnZombie666@reddit
Nope
JamesTheMannequin@reddit
I remember every morning.
AeroQuest1@reddit
I guess I'm the oddball. I'm sure it has something to do with 20 years in the military, but I'm in my mid 50s, definitely overweight, and I tuck my t-shirts in. Not a fan of showing off my ass crack.
snuffy_smith_@reddit
I have been asked more times than I can count if I am/was in the military…when I finally asked someone why they thought that about me? The answer “you always wear your shirt tucked in”
New-Sheepherder2239@reddit (OP)
I tuck all my polos and button downs. Even when I’ve tried “untuckits” I felt like a slob. I don’t wear a lot of t-shirts anymore except with athletic shorts/exercise
AeroQuest1@reddit
I wear t-shirts all the time. At work, we have to either wear hi-viz shirts or wear a a safety vest over what we wear, so I opt for just the shirt.
you_know_who_7199@reddit
When you get fat, that's when
KinkMountainMoney@reddit
Yeah. Otherwise you risk the dreaded People of Walmart look.
origsketch@reddit
Never
Hilsam_Adent@reddit
"If you're wearing a belt, the shirt gets tucked in." This is the rule I live by.
sdavids5670@reddit
A lot of people are too bulky around the midsection to tuck.
FormerLaugh3780@reddit
For most of us, when we became fat fucks and realized that we could leave them untucked to hide our fat.
Status_Iron_3706@reddit
No and never will be, unless it is an undershirt.
CountHonorius@reddit
My t-shirts tucked in right now. Always will be.
elliotsilvestri@reddit
Still do. Helps keep my pants up.
mjh8212@reddit
I never did. My dad would tell me to tuck my shirt in and I would and as soon as I was out of the house I untucked it. I usually forgot to tuck it back in when I got home. He’d just say I looked sloppy. I wore a size small to medium but most of my shirts were xl.
GrayBeardBoardGamer@reddit
I was never told to, but also never tucked. I thought tucking looked childish.
Thirty_Helens_Agree@reddit
And the silly 90210 sleeve-roll. Paired with a braided leather belt.
tanhauser_gates_@reddit
People still do that. Its not a genx thing. Its a vibe thing. Tucking through tshirt with a belt is next level.
Habeas-Opus@reddit
Wait, we stopped tucking?
disobedientavocado45@reddit
I tuck just to avoid plumber crack. It's an epidemic at my work place.
Carefree_Highway@reddit
Only with the obligatory thin woven leather belt w the extra hanging down
SciotoSlim@reddit
Never did by choice. Fuck them shirttuckers.
FreeThinkerFran@reddit
I wore oversized t-shirts. Not only did I tuck them in, I rolled the sleeves and put shoulder pads in them. Yep.
Wasatchbl@reddit
Never, the parking lot crew never tucked shirts
Fartina69@reddit
No. I refused to do that. I drew the line at pegging my jeans.
SirIll1219@reddit
To this day, I hate tucking in my shirt. It's constrictive and uuncomfortable.
Stereo_Jungle_Child@reddit
When we stopped looking good doing that. :)
Tired_o_Mods_BS@reddit
I've always hated tucking in my shirt. So I don't.
blueblocker2000@reddit
Never could. Ongoing side effect of being fat.
The_Man_in_Black_19@reddit
For me, age 19 when I lost my washboard abs in college.
