ULPT: Dispose of small heavy items for free at the airport.
Posted by aspie_electrician@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 120 comments
Buddy and I disposed of 30KG worth of broken dumbbells(plates for dumbbells) by taking them in our carry on suitcases and letting airport security dispose of them for free instead of checking the dumbbells. (Would’ve cost a lot of money to dispose of them in Hong Kong, and can’t really sell the exercise equipment here as my friends dad can’t figure out marketplace and my friend moved to another country.)
Professional-Mud3000@reddit
it’s how i get rid of my hazardous household waste until TSA starts letting liquids through again
IamB_Meister@reddit
At that point just put them in a public trash can
Lil_Shanties@reddit
Keyword here was Hong Kong, dumping in China comes with a drone following you home and some re-education.
Locksmithbloke@reddit
Wish the UK would do that! It's a 20 minute solution to the massive commercial fly tipping!
TimHung931017@reddit
Hong Kong isn't part of China.
Lil_Shanties@reddit
Hmmmm… Google that my friend.
TimHung931017@reddit
Yes it is geographically part of China, but in the case of what you said they operate under their own jurisdiction and laws, so it isn't dumping in China, its dumping in Hong Kong.
Lil_Shanties@reddit
China has zero respect for their agreement of a self governing Hong Kong they own it and act like it, Hong Kong does what it is told to do.
Ok-Sun-8416@reddit
I think you're stuck in 1997 mate, better read up on that
More_Dependent742@reddit
Bro out here living in 1997
Hey-Just-Saying@reddit
r/confidentlyincorrect LOL!
BushWishperer@reddit
Yes it is...
pichael288@reddit
It has been since 1997, it's a little more complicated than that though.
Craigglesofdoom@reddit
HK is not China.
Koshersaltie@reddit
lol. Since 1997.
Craigglesofdoom@reddit
You're right I was thinking Taiwan. Haven't had my coffee yet.
Lil_Shanties@reddit
🤣 all good! I see where you’re coming from though, go get that coffee my friend! ☕️
HouseMusicAndWeed@reddit
Airport workers are better equipped to deal with that than your local municipal employee expecting paper, dogsht, and empties.
IamB_Meister@reddit
The airport workers are going to put it in the trash.
Bob_A_Feets@reddit
At least it’s a dumpster and not a bin that some poor shmuck has to pick up and empty into the truck by hand at that point though.
TheLandOfConfusion@reddit
Then you can also just toss them in a dumpster
unwaveringwish@reddit
Our trucks do this by itself
Harry_Gorilla@reddit
As a former airport worker: this
Historical_Hunt2492@reddit
you think they have access to a portal to a different dimension? just put it in the trash bro
rworne@reddit
The Japanese have that handled already:

coolsellitcheap@reddit
Loval scrapyard would pay cash for dumbells. Then it woulf actually be recycled. Could have been your 1 thing you do. Instead you made some cleaners job harder.
aspie_electrician@reddit (OP)
It’s Hong Kong… what scrap recyclers?
gamamoder@reddit
https://www.shiuwingsteel.com/scrap-yard
this is one that does steel
aspie_electrician@reddit (OP)
My bad if I don’t know the area, just visiting with my friend. He doesn’t know of any scrap recyclers there either. The airport was the easiest method we had.
gamamoder@reddit
no im sorry for not reading
jzee87@reddit
You could have probably brought them to a scrap yard and got paid for them probably only like $5 American but surely it would have been easier then going to an airport
mgm904@reddit
As ridiculous as this may sound…. I have several businesses in my area with large dumpsters I use when needed. I have scouted them out to make sure there’s no cameras and also cover the tag on my truck when I use them just in case.
Anura83@reddit
If you want to get rid of trash then put online "for free". Some people take any trash even if your honest about the condition.
aspie_electrician@reddit (OP)
Looks like I got a update a few marketplace posts then.
The_Failord@reddit
r/unintelligentlifeprotips
Wizzle_Pizzle_420@reddit
That’s not that much weight, seems kind of like too many steps to do a simple thing, even if disposing is expensive. Unless the 30kg is wrong? Also selling exercise equipment, especially weights is really easy, just sell it cheap and boom, more money. And no need to go to the airport.
waitingOnMyletter@reddit
This sounds like the guy who is ordering anvils from Amazon and then just free pick-up returning them the next day without ever opening the box.
I think he’s been doing this for like a year trying to “bankrupt Amazon”. But all he is doing is physically abusing that amazon employee 😂
Malve1@reddit
I think I see the confusion. The U doesn’t stand for “useless”.
OneManGang2001@reddit
I always spend thousands on a flight to get rid of unwanted garbage. Winning.
Few_Ad_7613@reddit
It's a better deal than taking them to the dump and paying those fees.
Historical_Stay_808@reddit
I know some one who did this with his used motor oil
sludge_dragon@reddit
The real ULPT right here. Works well for medical waste as well.
Few_Ad_7613@reddit
What about used kitty litter?
essieecks@reddit
What about biological waste? Asking for a ~~corpse~~ ~~friend~~ person I never met, officer.
macjgreg@reddit
You know they buy those at the scrap yard right?
SjonDon@reddit
I lived in Hong Kong, all three the apartments blocks I lived in, in Midlevels, Ma Wan and DB had huge dumpsters below where it would have been a lot easier to dispose of them than hauling them to the airport haha
aspie_electrician@reddit (OP)
The original plan was to bring them back home to Canada, while trying to avoid paying exorbitant shipping rates.
__thrillho@reddit
So you wanted to bring them with you but ended up getting them thrown out? What is this tip lmao
gamamoder@reddit
im sorry ur just tryna make light of an annoying situation and were being reddit
Praetor72@reddit
This isn’t really unethical it’s just dumb and inconvenient.
ZealousidealCrazy335@reddit
Bringing an extra 30kg of luggage through an airport just to have it disposed of by security sounds absolutely worth it. You should do it every time you fly and fly every day.
Xtay1@reddit
Used motor oil, let them dispose of it in a environmental correct way.
mechmind@reddit
You have to keep buying suitcases but totally worth it to f that janitor's back. Def uneth
MyDogisDaft@reddit
I take about 8 big black bags of household rubbish and pretend to be concerned when they take it off me. Suckers!
eternaldarkness69@reddit
I save up my household garbage and dipose it this way
Ok-Philosophy1958@reddit
This. I like it as a silent form of protest
soihavetosay@reddit
You could probably make a couple of bucks if you took it to medal recycling
Artemus_Hackwell@reddit
You were in Hong Kong the harbor is right there
kretsstdr@reddit
REDDIT LOL
rojoshow13@reddit
Gas station garbage cans are free. And if you're getting gas, you're a customer so you don't have to feel bad.
aspie_electrician@reddit (OP)
I don't drive
YonKro22@reddit
Why didn't you just give them away to somebody that needed or wanted them
gamamoder@reddit
do you not have free scrap dropoff? thats pretty common in the states some metals theyll pay u although for home scrap its not usually much
aspie_electrician@reddit (OP)
Uhh… I don’t live in Hong Kong. Was just with a friend visiting his family, then we went back home to Canada
gamamoder@reddit
ohhhh
aspie_electrician@reddit (OP)
Yeah, he wanted to bring the weights back to Canada with him as cheaply as possible. Hence the carry-on. Decided it was easier to let customs dispose of them.
Fit-Dark-4062@reddit
There has got to be an easier way 🤣
ixamnis@reddit
There is. Most public parks have dumpsters and trash cans. They are available to the public. They aren’t intended for this sort of thing, but you won’t get in trouble disposing of , basically anything using them.
Jacktheforkie@reddit
Just make sure it hasn’t got your address or details on
crazyabe111@reddit
Well the body didn’t have either, but the police are telling me it had my finger prints all over it.
Mother-Pride-Fest@reddit
You forgot to clean it first. Bodies need to be dissolved in hydrofluoric acid to get rid of any identifying marks.
MyDogisDaft@reddit
He’s such an amateur.
jp62315@reddit
Just make sure you do it in a plastic tub and not the bathtub.
Tetracheilostoma@reddit
Fucking Jesse
OwnTurn1146@reddit
The police are lying to you, fingerprints dont show up on bodies bc of their skin. Hold out, admit nothing.
Hey-Just-Saying@reddit
They do if the forensics team gets there fast enough.
NeutralCombatant@reddit
The police won’t get there fast enough. Real world scenario I was involved with recently, forensics took almost three hours to show up to a suicide scene. Medical examiner got there before forensics did.
Jacktheforkie@reddit
I can’t say I’ve handled many of those
skiing123@reddit
Or live in a heavily surveilled like Hong Kong
Is that how you spell that word, surveilled?
Jacktheforkie@reddit
That too
c4pt1n54n0@reddit
Arlo Guthrie taught me that one
Jacktheforkie@reddit
Nice
random-guy-here@reddit
We deposited a decease relatives "toy" in a public park. What else are you going to do with it?
aspie_electrician@reddit (OP)
Sell it on r/usedsextoys
sitheandroid@reddit
Disinfectant is a thing
don3dm@reddit
Maybe just try driving along a dark road and chucking it out the window.
Greentigerdragon@reddit
No scrap-metal merchants around?
gamamoder@reddit
op in hong kong and i think they may charge for disposal for home users. i think were getting a bit environmental autist on op but idk theres usually something u can do with stuff if you have the motivation
Greentigerdragon@reddit
Yeah, I realised as I was hitting 'post' that this is Ulpt, as well.
/shrug/
Briggs281707@reddit
Sell them for scrap
TheRabidBadger@reddit
This is the greatest idea ever. I have like 9 half bottles of old Roundup and similar in my garage, and family who travel a lot. I wish I knew about this when I had to get rid of an old CRT monitor.
aspie_electrician@reddit (OP)
Those CRTs are worth money to collectors nowadays. Should’ve kept and sold it.
gamamoder@reddit
no there not only specific models with the trinitron higher end grill or rgb or component inputs.
small tvs shit with composite only arent worth shit, maybe like $30 at most. you can find crappy crts everywhere on marketplace around me in the the us
svideo stuff is slightly more cuz it doesnt look as dogshit but its still not much more. later monitors with vga that have decent max vertical resolutions or larger tvs with component or rgb scart might be worth a couple hundred
Voyager5555@reddit
This isn't unethical, it's just a waste of fucking time and energy. Just put it on the curb with a "Free" sign like a normal person.
aspie_electrician@reddit (OP)
Dunno if I can do that in Hong Kong. It’s a $5000HKD fine for littering there.
gamamoder@reddit
you could probably dump it in a public recycling bin. they want steel anyways and its pretty small
WhyKissAMasochist@reddit
wireswires@reddit
Sounds like a Viz Top Tip
Dry_Lingonberry1994@reddit
There is no scrap metal buyers in your country?
aspie_electrician@reddit (OP)
I am not a Hong Kong native, and my friends dad can’t wanted to originally bring them with him back to Canada (he moved there a few years ago) but didn’t want to pay shipping prices for 30KG of dumbbells.
MiserableFloor9906@reddit
You had a flight or how?
aspie_electrician@reddit (OP)
Yeah, had a flight back home after vacation and friend visiting family.
Mercury1600@reddit
I might use this method to dispose of my old heavy guns
Background-Solid8481@reddit
In the earlier days of COVID, weights were going around $1 per pound around here. I was at the county landfill/recycling center dumping some stuff & watched a guy unloading hundreds of pounds of iron into the dumpster. I told him he could sell it for $1/lb but he kept dumping. Idiot.
16-Bit_Degenerate@reddit
Just throw them out of a 17th floor inner city window.
ThisismeCody@reddit
Please tell me you don’t vote.
thaneliness@reddit
Noted, I’ll pack my old mattress next time I fly
peggory@reddit
Scrap metal merchant?
beer_bukkake@reddit
This works. I got rid of two bed bug infested mattresses and an old couch from ikea that a roommate left behind after they spilled ranch all over it. 100% would recommend.
s4yum1@reddit
Wtf how is this even a “pro” tip rofl.
JohnHazardWandering@reddit
Let airports enjoy the unattended baggage left behind because people didn't want to pay carry on fees.
ilffej@reddit
Confused until I read Hong Kong, and then it all made sense haha
khizoa@reddit
Awesome. Next time I'm bringing multiple broken tvs on my carry on then
Dizzy_Horse_105@reddit
73 VW bug.
Masala-Dosage@reddit
This works for IKEA wardrobes too. I’ve never got one through security
oportoman@reddit
🤣🤣🤣🤣 utter bullshit
citizin@reddit
I'm in Canada. Just put 2 sets off rims, and 6 tires out to the curb. Didn't even last 4 hours out there. Hopefully Somebody can use them.
NetDork@reddit
There are no metal recycler companies in the area? You'd actually get paid a little bit for that stuff.
Otherwise-Topic-1791@reddit
🤣🤣🤣
