Why has this anti-Balkan sentiment grown so much lately, to the point that so many users in this sub are in a constant competition about who is ”less Balkan”? Not a single day goes by without seeing comments like these - something that was very unusual before. What caused this rapid shift?

Because people are stupid.
Here's the Balkan Peninsula:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balkans#Balkan_Peninsula
Everyone in it is Balkan.
JRJenss@reddit
Well that's complete BS too because thinking of Slavonia as not Balkan just because it's north of Sava, while thinking of Rijeka, Kvarner, Istria or southwestern Slovenia as the Balkans, is beyond stupid.
FatefulDonkey@reddit
Indeed. We're all poop
rintzscar@reddit
I didn't say that. The "Balkan people bad" idea is idiotic.
FatefulDonkey@reddit
They're stuck in the stone ages though and mentally backward, so maybe it's not inaccurate
Valahul77@reddit
You have to define what you mean by "Balkans".For many across the ocean, this term is just another nickname for the former Yugoslavia(sometimes this also includes Albania as well). In the geographical sense thd Balkans are much more diverse. They include Bulgaria, continental Greece, a small part ofTurkey, partially Romania and sometimes even Hungary(BTW Hungary had quite a few things in common with the Balkans throughout its history, including almost 150 years when it was part of the Ottoman empire)
HeyVeddy@reddit
Imo she's right Greece isn't Balkan, but it is middle eastern lmao
Odd-Organization-740@reddit
I mean, the girl basically equates Balkans with former Yugoslavia, which is American level ignorance.
Reality is, this sub is growing. When every sub grows big enough and less dedicated people come in, the horse shit gets unloaded.

ZhiveBeIarus@reddit
Hahahahaha, did this girl really just say Croatia is more "eastern" than Cyprus culturally🤣💀?
Even Greece is much less western than Croatia, let alone Cyprus, insecure people love using communism as an way to determine a country's culture but 70 years simply can't undo 1000's of years of history, as delusional as Croats are (claiming to be identical to Austria, etc) they're by far the most western influenced country in the Balkans historically and it's not even close, that said their attitude is extremely Balkan and they seem to act no different than the Serbs they dislike.
Apart-Temperature329@reddit
No-one in Cyprus do care even a bit about if Cyprus or Croatia is more Western.
ZhiveBeIarus@reddit
Nice, doesn't change the fact that Croatia is much more western than Cyprus.
JazzlikeAsk8039@reddit
I have been in both Croatia (Dubrovnik, Zagreb), and Cyprus (Limassol, Nicosia, Ayia Napa) and he is LYING here to promote his agendas. PLEASE don't listen to this delusional retard.
lupi64@reddit
Interesting. So many Brits, Russians, Israelis in Cyprus. How can you all compare anything Balkan to an island? Are you all meaning Western, or "European" for Croatia?
Apart-Temperature329@reddit
I'm not sure what you even define as 'Western', as that's not something you can measure really. If you mean more Central European influenced Balkan country rather than a somewhat British-influenced Mediterranean country, then surely - but again, who cares?
No-Lawfulness-699@reddit
As a CRO myself, I can tell you are correct for the most part.
However, I've never ever ever EVER heard anyone in Croatia say that we are Austrian.
Quite the contrary. We will happily host their tourists every year, but I've literally never heard a single Croatian, let alone a Croatian politician say that we are Austrian, NEVER.
ZhiveBeIarus@reddit
It's most likely not a widespread belief irl, just something that Croatian Redditors seem to believe.
Dovaskarr@reddit
No one believes that. Legit no one

SuperConcert8949@reddit
Croats post shitty things online too.
Dovaskarr@reddit
Yes they do. Not even close to serbian stuff. They are all around our portal, our news outlets, on reddit, on facebook, on youtube. You cant find a single thing about croatian history without serbians commenting their lies. Go to serbian history stuff, I did, you could not find the same comments against the serbs.
Obvious-Desk4573@reddit
Are we being for real? Any discussion involving Balkan history will have keyboard warriors on both/all sides battling in comment sections.
FloppyDiskDrives@reddit
Interesting how a simple joke triggered you to backfire with stereotypes. I guess it shows your true colours. Keep arguing with yourself.
No-Lawfulness-699@reddit
Exactly
No-Lawfulness-699@reddit
That could be true, but honestly I'm on Reddit relatively often, and I've never read that either.
If anything I would say 99.999% of people would hate hearing that, as we were unfortunately throughout our history been under the influences of other powers, Austrians being one of them obviously.
But I understand, you not being a Croatian and not living here how you could perhaps make that assumption by reading few Reddit posts.
Cheers
Dovaskarr@reddit
Thar is just cope. We hate austrians. Not hate, but dislike. Not to mention how they are rude to us, all the fricking time
Sc0tts_tot@reddit
No we don't. Why would you even say something like that? Biggest percentage of hate goes to Serbia, and you know that.
Hour-Promotion-2496@reddit
We don't hate Austrians lol.
But then again it's crazy for any Croatian to say "we", as the regions are wildly different.
But where are you from?
Dovaskarr@reddit
Trogir
Hour-Promotion-2496@reddit
Oh because of tourism then?
We do business with them in the north and they're pretty chill.
Dovaskarr@reddit
Yeah. I mean, there are normal ones but I have personal experience and a lot of people that had dealings with them that had any issues, it went bad and they went full karen.
For me, I was working for a german dude and was taking in his guests in his high end apartments. 2 out of 3 austrians wanted us to make room for their excess stuff, bitched a lot about not having a garage which was never even in the deal, one left a turd in the toilet etc. This is just last year. They are always bitching for no reason, wants more and always complain how expensive it is. And yet we all know how expensive is to go to austria for skiing. You have dealings in business, I in my current job have a couple as well. They are all very nice, never misses to pay (since it is a monthly service) but as soon as they are on vacation, they become economy terrorists. Like the whole world has to bend for them. And I have to say, it is not all, hell maybe I had bad luck with them and people around me but those bad people leave a bad taste for everyone else. I look at austrians differerent when they need something as tourists and I walk on eggshells no matter how many good experiences I have with them. But maybe austrians for me are italians, or french, or hungarians for the rest. I have all good experiences with all three nations, but others do not
No-Lawfulness-699@reddit
They also come a LOT as tourists to Kvarner and Istria and they are mostly fine.
No-Lawfulness-699@reddit
I don't dislike anyone, and I would definitely not say that most Croatians dislike Austrians. Especially not us from the coast. They are generally very cultured and very polite guests, generally speaking of course , here's assholes everywhere.
But yes, politically speaking, we absolutely hate when somebody says we're Austrian ,or are part of Austria or anything like that, you could include Hungarians in there as well, I'm not even gonna go into Serbians.
Dovaskarr@reddit
We had a ton of austrians acting like asses here. A lot are normal, but when an austrian decides he will be an ass, it is always nuclear. Brits are drunk, ukrainians (rich ones) are acting like above others, italians and french are less and less assholes but tend to be, germans normal. But when threre is a big problem, its an austrian. And it is always because they are being a karen.
JazzlikeAsk8039@reddit
Bro your whole agenda is calling Greece an eastern European or a balkan country I remember seeing your posts 2 years ago doing the same thing, and you keep doing it. Of course Cyprus and greece are objectively more western than ex communist Croatia, are we literally out of our minds right now?
Neutrinomind@reddit
Catholic Croatia, part of either Hungary, Austria or Venice for 800 years Croatia? Western Enlightenment classicism messed with all your brains, thinking the culture that literally defined what was “the east” during roman times and beyond belongs now to western europe.
JazzlikeAsk8039@reddit
Catholic doesn't mean western. If you go by this logic then even albania is western
ZhiveBeIarus@reddit
1) I have never called Greece an Eastern European country
2) No, Cyprus is absolutely not more western than Croatia just because of communism (or well, lack thereof), Croatia is a Catholic country with at least some historical ties to Venice and Austria-Hungary, Cyprus is a Christian West Asian nation, right next to the Levant, ruled by the Ottomans and significantly Islamic historically speaking (although I suppose this doesn't really affect the culture of the Christian inhabitants, anyways, goes to show you how eastern the island has been historically).
Substratas@reddit (OP)
You just described Albanians.
I’ve noticed many of my compatriots are obsessed with overestimating the cultural proximity to Italy & underestimating the cultural proximity to Serbia. I’m like 🙄

merdeauxfraises@reddit
Greece, despite being small, has big differences between the north and the south. The south was liberated from the Turks 100 years before the north. The influence this occupation had to the north is therefore greater and closer to Balkan culture. The south does have indeed fewer Balkan attributes and the southerners often feel disconnected culturally.
That said, many Greek sin general also deny being Balkan due to the association of many regions with the soviet state/communism, so you 'll hardly ever hear a right-oriented person admit they are Balkan. Along with this of course, comes the delusion that Greece isn't poor, corrupted and filled with organized crime, which is often associated with the Balkans (at least in the. minds of Greek people).
ChannelEffective6114@reddit
That's just Greeks, most of them are delusional that their country is something culturally so unique that they are incomparable to anyone else. So they don't like to be called "Balkan", "European" etc. They sometimes like to be called "Mediterranean" because they are proud of eating olive oil and cheese the same way other Mediterranian cultures do, but some of them don't even like to be called that. It's similar to how Americans think they are the only ones who have "freedom".
In reality, they are a 100% Balkan country for many reasons, but mostly for the obvious fact of being located on the Balkan peninsula, and for the Ottoman influence on their culture, which is what makes all the Balkan countries "Balkan" in the opinion of many experts.
OkHoneydew1599@reddit
It is. Not to anyone, but to most countries. Trying to downgrade the significance of the Greek civilization throughout the centuries, just because we've evolved into an economically irrelevant country, is quite frankly dumb
Not saying we're not also Balkan btw. But still I don't think we're in the club in the same way other countries are. You can't possibly tell me that there aren't more differences between Greek and X Balkan country than between Serbia and Croatia or Montenegro and Bosnia or (any combination of your liking)
ChannelEffective6114@reddit
I'm not downgrading the signifficance. Every culture is signifficant and equally worthy. I am just saying that all countries have things that make them unique, and also things that make them similar to others. Greece is similar in many elements to other Balkan countries, but it doesn't want to be grouped there because it overemphasizes the differences, while neglecting the similarities.
Sadly, the reason for neglecting the similarities and common characteristics is based on their false sense of cultural superiority - thinking that their culture is better than other cultures, and that this is the reason why they can't be grouped with other countries. They also harbor disgusting stereotypes about the rest of the Balkans, which is ridiculous, because there are rarely lesser civilized people on the Balkans than Greeks (talking over each other, eating with their hands, screaming on the streat like goats, throwing trash everywhere, polluting their environment, dressing tackilly, talking nonsense without shame, being rude for no reason, being petty, gossiping and scheming for the thrill of it, driving like crazy, being the most corrupt country with the least media freedoms in the EU).
Still, living and behaving proposterously in this trash hole, Greeks always have something to say about how Balkans are bad and they don't belong there because of some silly reasons. I'm not saying other Balkaners are better that Greeks, but for sure they are not worse.
Ok, Greece had great Ancient times, but for instance had 0 renaissance compared to some other Balkan countries, or was very behind scientifically and academically throughout 20th and especially 21st century. Everyone has strenghts and weaknesses. But Greeks don't want to see it that way, they look at the rest of the Balkans with snobbery while some of the Balkan countries a much better place to live than Greece for an average citizen.
Also, you can't say just "Greece" when you compare it to other Balkan countries. For instance, Northern Greece is so similar in everything to Serbia, Bulgaria or N. Macedonia, some areas are very similar to coastal areas of Croatia or Montenegro (to a much bigger extent than let's say coastal parts of Croatia or Montenegro would ever be similar to Romania etc).
Just to conclude, I actually do love Greece and Greeks, I think it's a wonderful country with many good things, people are overall kind and warm, very generous and helpful, the food is great, the music is amazing, and I am rooting for Greece to stop being economically abused by the West and to do good again. But having experienced the Greek racism towards other Balkan nations, having lived with Greeks for 7 years, this assumption that "Greek culture is better than other cultures" and other cultures are lesser worthy, that is so prevalent here and so wrong - absolutely no. I'm allergic to it. It's wrong and you guys are lying to yourselves. Stop living in the past. Not everyone cares for some stuff from thousands of years ago. Other cultures value other stuff, and everyone is equally valuable.
Rundas77@reddit
These 7 years really traumatized you, huh? The generalizations you are making about Greek people... damn... Not every Greek is like that, and you should've known it since you "love" us so much. Ultra nationalists can be found in every nation, especially in the Balkan peninsula...
ChannelEffective6114@reddit
I'm not traumatized, I'm quite happy. Just I feel pity for every person who deludes themselves thinking they are culturally superior to their neighbors while sitting in a corrupted, filthy rat cage. And statistically, this delusion is very prevalent in Greece.
According to a 2018 Pew Research Center analysis, 89% of people in Greece agreed that their culture is superior to others. This figure was the highest among all nations surveyed at the time. In the world. You are the most culturally narcissist nation in the world. At this point, what I wrote is not a generalization, it's a statistically proven fact.
I'm sorry if the statistically objective truth traumatized you. Go read Platon and jerk of how other nations don't have Platon, so you are totally not Balkan.
Rundas77@reddit
Admit you have an issue with Greece/Greeks and let it go… A “filthy rat cage”… the hatred in this statement?
Of course I am proud about my country’s history, but that doesn’t make me feel superior to anyone else. And wherever did I say that Greece is not balkan?
ChannelEffective6114@reddit
Admit that Athens and Thessaloniki are filthy and more suitable for rats than for humans and let it go...
I'm glad you are proud of your country's history, it's ok to be proud. It's not ok to be racist to the rest of the Balkans and feel culturally superior to the point of deluding yourself you are not a Balkan country yourself.
I know how you speak of Albanians, of Bulgarians, of Macedonians, of Romanians. You guys are full on racist to the rest of the Balkans, full of hate and prejudice and the moment someone dishes it out back to you, you cry and feel offended.
BlackberryHoliday734@reddit
Lmao. But we are special and unique. Always have been. That's why we called all non Greeks barbarians. Duh.
ChannelEffective6114@reddit
This is exactly what I'm talking about. They will find some silly little trait that they think is specifically theirs, such as "having a different name for "us" and for "not us" back in Ancient times", not knowingly that the other cultures had that too, and feel how they are special.
Mostly, they will focus on things that happened thousands of years ago, such as "we had theories about the world, art, and architecture", because sadly they peaked in their Before Christ era and they have little to be proud of today.
Basically, Greek national right-wing myth is like an old waiter serving you and telling you how he was smarter than you in elementary school.
BlackberryHoliday734@reddit
Lighten up.
Fred_Neecheh@reddit
As a Serb I am Orthodox Croat-Turk, therefore not Balkan at all.
In all seriousness, claiming "civilizational superiority" is just chauvinism. Speaka more of the speaker, than of the object of their chauvinism.
Also, Maria Todorova wrote of balkanism as a cousin to orientalism, brilliant book, Imagining the Balkans
Significant-Yam9843@reddit
I love the Balkans, but as a matter of fact, I learned here that Greece, Turkey and Romênia are "part of the Balkans" too (or am I incorrect? 😭😂😬😬😒), but I never thought about it as something bad but rather as a geographical/cultural region.
This discussion reminded me of a similar phenomenon regarding "being western", we, Latin Americans, see ourselves as "western" since we're literally in the Western Hemisphere of the globe - besides speaking european languages and being vastly catholics. I kid you not, every single time foreigners say otherwise we have kinda a hard time to get what they really mean when they say "western".
cosmico11@reddit
Also, we're taught in Latin-America that America is one continent divided into three subcontinents (the rest of the world disagrees), so in that regard we're fighting tooth and nail to not be part of the so-called Global South XD
Significant-Yam9843@reddit
Balkanism as a prejudice and dismissiveness towards the Balkans? That's interesting.
In Latin America, we kinda feel that too when outsiders lecture us about "being western" - which isn't something that is good or bad for us (we learn that we're in the western hemisphere at schools, therefore we are part of the west, not part of the east); then we travel abroad and learn about the ongoing propaganda, the post cold war binary thing and the "rich countries club" which obviously doesnt include Latin America, but includes Australia which is literally the South and in the East.
Nowadays, after facing so much contempt and working hard on decolonialism, we're proudly looking inwards more and towards the East too and it has been an amazing ride. Global South is already a widely accepted concept here.
Stormrage44@reddit
Very interesting. Will check this out
Fred_Neecheh@reddit
Its really interesting. First or second chapter is very jargon-y, but rest of it reads like a breeze. Definitely do. Basically the Balkans is constructed as the European Other/Orient. Still Europe unlike Middle East but "oriental" and therefore subordinate. Near East (which existed in English as a separate term from Middle East or Far East). Note that in most European languages tjat distinction is now lost, near east == middle east
Stormrage44@reddit
Yeah the west centric terms are also another thing...
I think there are even older relations between nothern caspian (eastern slavs) and "oriental" asian cultures.
But for Balkans it should be more constructible, history trade and everything. It will be interesting how a local derives these from their perspective.
Zekieb@reddit
I also loved how she dissected all Balkan Nationalisms and their desire to be viewed as "Western" or "European" and dissociate themselves from "the Balkans" as much as possible.
Funnily enough I've seen some of these "anti-Balkan" arguments, that Todorova discussed in her book, almost word for word replicated on this sub lmao.
Fred_Neecheh@reddit
Yes, absolutely! On other subs too.
Roufianos255@reddit
Living in the UK, I do think people perceived Greece as a Mediterranean country, and what's more I do think Balkan isn't really a term people use much abroad.
That said, Greece is definitely Balkan as a geographic fact. I would also say obviously culturally too as there's so much of Greek culture which would be alien to other Mediterranean countries but familiar to an Albanian or someone from North Macedonia.
Funny thing about that argument is probably that Croatia seems less Balkan to me than Greece. They lack the Ottoman and Orthodox culture that a lot of us share.
FeelTheKetasy@reddit
I find it funny because for me Croatia is the most similar to us in terms of having both Balkan and Mediterranean traits 💀
Roufianos255@reddit
Oh really? I feel like we have the least in common with Croatia and I always see them say the same. I've never been though so my opinion is worthless aha.
CamelAmbitious7425@reddit
Depends on the Region of Croatia. Northern Croatia is indeed very different to Greece and culturally Greece and Croatian arent very similiar overall, but Landscape, mentality, climate and Lifestyle of Dalmatia and Greece are probably the most similiar in the Balkans. I think the average Greek would feel more at home in Dalmatia than in North Macedonia or Serbia despite the cultural gap.
ZhiveBeIarus@reddit
No way, Dalmatia is very different from Greece.
CamelAmbitious7425@reddit
How? What makes Dalmatia so different?
ZhiveBeIarus@reddit
I was exaggerating a little bit, Dalmatia is not shockingly foreign the way a Middle Eastern country or Finland would be, but it's definitely the least similar Balkan region to Greece culturally speaking, together with the rest of Croatia, parts of Romania and (maybe?) Bosnia (i haven't been there).
Roufianos255@reddit
Interesting, thanks for sharing. I definitely need to go one day.
FeelTheKetasy@reddit
Oh I think we are different culturally for sure but I was moreso saying that both our countries are the Balkan countries who are also Mediterranean that for one way or another have tried to “Westernise” themselves more than any other Balkan country (unless you count Slovenia ofc)
Both countries also tend to be more liberal compared to our fellow Balkan countries and are very tourism heavy
Melodic_Interview210@reddit
In France the term is used a lot and applies indiscriminately to all people of the, well, Balkan peninsula.
pinelogr@reddit
They probably think of the islands as Greece.
P-l-Staker@reddit
Those islands being Rhodes, Corfu, Crete, Mykonos and Santorini. No other islands exist by the way!
SpiritLama@reddit
Balkan- people from mountain.
el_salinho@reddit
I never understood this, you can be culturally “west” but geographical location is just a fact. Greece is balkan, as deep as it can be. Croatia is balkan. Everything south of sava-danube is balkan. It’s a geographical fact, not a feeling.
Prisma1986@reddit
Balkan means trouble most people that are posting here they do it to turn some people against others. Nobody cares about this kind of Balkans. We have moved on 100 years ago. Btw geopolitical Balkan countries are not relevant anymore. Focus is on Middle East.
skviki@reddit
Because apart from some expats from Balkan and some low effort/low ambition denizens of Balkan people know that balkanism is precisely one of the things holding them back.
Expats with low self-reflection abilities and high emotional instability emotionally idealize the cultural territory - from which they or their parents moved out. Not that balkanism is the only factor of course - different socio-political systems contributed heavily to the decisions to move out to somewhere more normal.
Sure, coming from countries where you can live and prosper normally even if you are low qualified workforce and getting “home” to Balkans you absorb everything positive. The easygoing atmosphere, you are on your paid vacation there, you reminisce “the old days” and “happy childhood”, you see they don’t give a duck about anything, proudlt declare their (idiotic) beliefs like they have any weight, etc etc. Then you sit back into you car worth twice as much as the average balkan car and druve back into a society that works. Unreflected you can think how “right, as it should be” it was in the past week visiting “home”. You bough all sorts of medicine, saw a “wise woman” who cured you with her “energy”, saw an ancient pyramid that a local “scientist” discovered and invented a story about it. It really was magical with all the magical thinking you “bought” there. And then you are returning, afer spending two thirds of what you’d spend at home back to grey reality of a job.
Then some decide this is “the thing” and move back. If they do it after reaching western pension they can live well. But often stumble into madness of local sociaties and institutions not working. Used to basic stuff being in order that comes as a shock often. I know people that moved back to france, germany, austria.
Balkanism is fine for a holiday, it’s exotic, it can be an experience, it can even be marketed as one for tourism. A sort of safari but not with animals. But your question is answered by all the feet that voted with leaving the general area in past decades.
FrozenDihh@reddit
In Greek and I also consider myself Balkan, but she does not speak for us Greeks. Φανατική σκύλα και η μάνα της.
Low_qualitie@reddit
It’s probably because of the disrespectful, argumentative, and xenophobic nature of a very large portion of Balkan people, which those arguing about “not being Balkan” don’t realize are carrying within themselves and proving when arguing.
Royal_Association750@reddit
I mean if ur Slavic ur by default less Balkan it’s not really that wrong to say. Not denying anyone’s existence tho but it’s like Europeans are Americans they are part of the land now but not the way native Americans are or white Australians or white South Africans.
Parking-Code-4159@reddit
So, are only Neanderthals true Balkan people?
Royal_Association750@reddit
More like Albanians and Greeks
Parking-Code-4159@reddit
No, the Neanderthals were the first, so they are the true Balkans. The later waves of early hunter-gatherers from africa, the ancient north eurasians, the anatolian farmers and the steppe pastoralists, which all are the ancestors of the Greeks and the Slavs came after the Neanderthals, so they are all less Balkan than the original Balkan people, the Neanderthals

Royal_Association750@reddit
You try to make it into a laughing matter cause it’s a typical cope from ur Easter European kind. It’s okay my Russian guy tell urself what u want
ZhiveBeIarus@reddit
Albanians have Slavic ancestry too.
Royal_Association750@reddit
Very low and everyone in the world is mixed it’s not just about genetics but also about language and other attributes up to history of existence
ZhiveBeIarus@reddit
It's not very low for every Albanian, it is very low in specific areas like Mirdita, the highlands of Shkoder, Lezhe and SW Albania, Korcars, Kosovars and Montenegrin Albanians are heavily Slavic admixed.
Royal_Association750@reddit
Thanks to the Albanian expert for teaching me about my people but even as I mentioned this isn’t the only criteria I go by. It’s like the Gypsie population they are also here for 800 or more years they still seen as Indian migrant sub group. This is what yall are for me just in Easter European way.
ZhiveBeIarus@reddit
The difference is that Albanians are not part Indian while you are part Slavic, your analogy would make sense if you had a Gypsy grandparent yourself, but I am assuming that's not the case.
Antique_Birthday6380@reddit
We are not part slavic and that’s something that every person here in Albania agrees.
Royal_Association750@reddit
I just mentioned that dna isn’t the only thing that matters everyone is mixed you may have Albanian dna or any other dna as well but ur entire culture and ur entire being to me is just a sub Russian Slavic Eastern European group that isn’t Balkan to me. To me Slavs are from the Balkans the same way Turks in Berlin are German. No matter what u say it doesn’t change my opinion. I consider u less Balkan the same way I do with gypsies or any other sub group. No reason to argue with me. No hate tho <3
ZhiveBeIarus@reddit
Your personal opinions influenced by a massive superiority complex don't really matter.
CamelAmbitious7425@reddit
Balkan Slavs are already about 1500 years in the Balkans and are genetically heavily mixed with Paleo Balkanites. Comparing Balkan Slavs to white Americans or Australians is laughable.
Royal_Association750@reddit
Eastern European cope
CamelAmbitious7425@reddit
Albanians, Romanians and Greeks all have Slavic genes and vice versa, without Slavs there is no Balkans
Royal_Association750@reddit
It’s also about culture and language please stop overrating ur existence here. The Balkans existed without Slavs 1000s of years ain’t nothing special about u. Ur balkan to me the same way ur German to Germans ;)
CamelAmbitious7425@reddit
How Long do you have to live somewhere till you are considered native? The Balkans existed before the Slavs but it also existed before the Illyrians, Thracians etc. And what culture are you talking about? Albanian, Romanian or modern Greek culture have nothing in common with the cultures of ancient Balkanites. The Slavs but also the Ottomans, the Romans the Huns and Avars all changed the cultures and genetics of the Balkans. Modern Albanians and Romanians are not more Balkan than modern Serbs or Bulgarians

Many Greeks delude themselves into thinking they aren’t Balkan (because they associate the Balkans with cultural or even ethnic inferiority) but that they are Western, and thus constituting the “easternmost part of Western Europe”. It’s a silly way to look at things but it’s a form of self-hating orientalism, like considering local traditions, influenced by and influencing Balkan and Eastern traditions themselves, as totally backwards.

The only “fact” you can say about this topic is that since most of Greece is in the Balkan Peninsula, it is mostly Balkan, and people just accept or reject this. Nice buzzwords you found online btw.

If Balkans is an ulcer, Greece is the pimple on it oozing out puss.
Greek people in 2026AD thinking they are the same as Greek people in 2026BC is laughable... The same as modern Italians having a hard-on for anything SPQR...

For me, among other Greeks, when we hear the word balkan we think of villages, corruption, uncivilised etc, I still think Greece is more of its own thing to an extend.
Sempra@reddit
”villages, corruption, uncivilized” is definitely spot on for most parts of greece.
PONT05@reddit
Yeah I guess, any city besides Athens and Thessaloniki are considered villages and “more” corrupted.
Sempra@reddit
They are. And the way Greek people communicate, and co-exist, would be seen as uncivilized by many western countries.

For the most part (even though you can find examples of the opposite) most of Croatians and Slovenians do not like to be put in that category, mostly due to "Balkans" incredibly simplistic, tribal mentality.
Both of us are westernmost parts of EX-YU, both in the European Union, and by far the most democratic, well organised societies as a whole, of course not without it's flaws. While we do have a dominant religion, religion does not lead the politics or the mentality as a whole either, nor do we identify with other nations through that religion blindly. Like I said, neither are without its flaws, but there is in a single country I would live in other than Croatia or Slovenia.
Seeing what's happening in the neighboring countries around us, both politically and societally, makes me want to be as far as possible from that.
ZhiveBeIarus@reddit
Croatia is not the same as Slovenia, your country is much larger and much more diverse than theirs, Central European influence is nearly nonexistent in places like Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar or Shibenik, all fully Balkan towns.
iammymaster28@reddit
Then what are you doing here? I am not trying to be mean, even if the question sounds acute, just asking. There are subreddits for Central Europe, you know that, right?

Greece is more Balkan than any Ex-Yugoslav country could ever be. From Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Serbia, every of these was heavily influenced by Austria and the Germanic world at some point.
Greece was the longest under Ottoman influence too.
Sure, some parts are more like southern Italy for example, but that makes them WILDER, not more like Western europe.
ZhiveBeIarus@reddit
Montenegro, Bosnia and Macedonia are not Austrian influenced at all, and in Serbia such influence can only be found in the north mostly in the form of old buildings, what are you even talking about?
PreWiBa@reddit
Of course they are, the western coast of Montenegro was under Austria, Bosnia was Austrian für 60 years, practically every big Bosnian city has an Austrian old city quarter.
And in Serbia it's not only in the form of old buildings lmao
Melodic_Interview210@reddit
Tbf Austrian influence was downplayed a lot in Serbian school curiculums so a lot of people aren't that aware of it and summarize our relation to the AH empire with WW1

It's Croatia's and Greece's wet dream to be not considered Balkan- Central Europe and South Europe respectively. 😄😄
petrop36@reddit
IMO that is because of the politicians and the people who run the countries, the source of the problem lies with the fact that nobody in the Balkans wants to resolve their own problems without foreign help. However when the bill from those who helped comes then we complain.

Couldn’t agree more, not to mirror the comments from my fellow Greeks that the OP is justified for being frustrated with. This is all a modern take and the idea of lumping Greece in with a country like Croatia as a homogeneous culture is kinda wild. If you look at Scandinavia where the OP lives the cultures and even people share more similarities in language dna and history vs the Balkans. Albanians have overlap with Greece due to the proximity to our modern borders and migration. It’s undeniable that Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Montenegro are the most similar to each other. Even to a lesser extent Bulgaria and North Macedonia are closer to each other than Greece. This is all up for debate and maybe that’s what is the most “Balkan” thing we all share our strong opinions
Names-Are-Confusing@reddit
This is such a false take on so many levels. Croatia and homogenous culture? Seriously? Croatia has Central European culture in the North incl. Zagreb, Mediterranean culture on the coast and Balkan culture in Slavonia and the Dalmatian Hinterland. It’s very diverse, be it culturally, genetically, or linguistically(parts of the country speak more similarly to Slovenia, others to Bosnia/Serbia). I speak Croatian and yet I speak more similarly to a Slovene than a Serbian. I’m genetically the closest to Hungarians, Czechs and Slovenes - not Serbs or Bosnians and culturally speaking I have little overlap with Bosnian/Serbian culture(partly due to the fact my area was never under Ottomans so it has no Ottoman influence/legacy). Stop spreading false information.

I mean, its about geography and culture..So, imo if someone relates to it on both or either of those accounts, they can identify themselves as from Balkan, or if they dont, they dont have to. But i think it shouldnt be generalized onto entire country/all regions and all people of a said country. Now, it kinda appears a bit dumb to say "I'm Balkan" as this isnt a nationality or ethnicity, so they can only be from Balkan..yet again, idc, people can say/do whatever they want.
True-Blacksmith4235@reddit

Dry-Property-9722@reddit
Greece is better cause we were Balkaners before all this filth moved here next to us. 💪💪💪💪
SoulEkko@reddit
Frankly I've seen few Greeks do that. I think it's more about what's in people's heads: if in their perception the concept of Balkans = bad, they will try to dissociate themselves from the label as hard as they can, even though there's plenty of things around the Balkans that are common in each country.
I've seen a few Romanians state "Romania is not Balkan" without actually bringing any arguments to the table except the geography thing (a little part of it is geographically in the Balkans).
I could make a case for Transylvania since they had other influences throughout history. But Wallachia? It's full blown Balkanville Turbomax Championship Edition Deluxe.
casual_philosopher02@reddit
yeah the thing is we should destigmatise being balkan and embrace it!! their type of mentality turns into chauvinism real quick
SoulEkko@reddit
The psychology is the same as making a big deal out of something: if (for the sake of example) someone makes fun of some pimples on your skin, but you simply aren't bothered by it, they'll usually drop it quickly because you don't care about it. If you do act bothered by it, odds are they'll poke and prod like little kids to annoy you.
So the path of least resistance is just embrace your inner Balkan.
Economy-Pen-2271@reddit
Wallchia had other influences too. Hungarian for example . Yes it's pretty Balkan but it's wrong to say it doesn't have any other influences
True-Blacksmith4235@reddit
I think Greece is especially difficult to pinpoint and classify as just one thing, so the discussion is futile.
casual_philosopher02@reddit
Us Greeks overestimate how Mediterannean we are honestly, most of us have ancestors from the mountains that drunk tsipuro(mainland name for raki) and danced to tsamiko/syrto. My grandparents didn't see the sea, or drink ouzo till they came to work in the city
True-Blacksmith4235@reddit
I think it’s definitely a Mediterranean country, but with the perception of people being cheerful, good hosts, traditional and not stuck up.
So you get best of both worlds. The good side of Balkan, without the stigma of wars, or poverty.
casual_philosopher02@reddit
eeeeeeehh people have short term memory, my grandparents were so poor they were getting beat up for picking fruit off of their garden's trees, ate meat 4 times a year if lucky. My dad saw an inside bathroom in the 80s🤣
ZhiveBeIarus@reddit
You're not wrong about the whole "Mediterranean" nonsense but fruit brandy is hardly a uniquely Balkan thing, similar drinks can be found in at least half of Europe.
casual_philosopher02@reddit
every single version if said brandy has it's own twist that differentiates it. The point is that the ottoman rule shaped our cuisine and culture in a more Balkan unified way. It was in the mid 20th century that Greece tried to be westernised, suddenly drinking tsipuro and listening to klarina became a bad village thing, now we should dance sirtaki and drink ouzo!!!
holyrs90@reddit

Specifically for greece, since the screenshot shows the debate from that pov:
Greeks are super racists (individually, not systemically) and suffer from a severe case of inferiority complex and delusions of (past) grandeur. Many (if not most) despise being compared to other balkan peoples, as they view them as inferior and less developed...while greece being an absolute shame of a state. They hide behind the whole "We GaVe YoU cIvIliZaTiOn" while acting in the most uncivilized way possible, such as throw their garbage everywhere and then act surprised when there a floods due to all the garbage blocking the drainage system (that we all know is shit). So to all the sane balkans out there: greece is a balkan country, both in regards of geography and cultural similarities, but many greeks are just in denial due to severe stupidity and racism.

Because you keep talking nonsense that the Balkans are just ethnic cleansing, wars, and genocide? Slovenia has practically had no wars in its history, Bosnia has had one, Croatia two, Serbia three or four. Look at all Western countries, for example France (which has had around 100 wars). Do they have Germans as a national minority? Do they have Italians, Spaniards, etc. as minorities? No because they were ethnically cleansed.
And the fact that they are rich, and not even that much richer, is because they are in debt. It’s enough to say that little Belgium has 2,000 billion in debt. Give us 1,000 billion and we will be also rich

I guess in the end, it makes a Greek, Croat or Slovene feel a bit better about having cucked out half of their country and soul to Aldi and Lidl because Daddy Germany, Austria or UK paid them attention for a second.
