Return to Oz

The Mrs. (1979) and I (1981) were watching Wicked 2: Electric Boogaloo tonight and I noticed several mentions of _clock tick_. I thought of Tik-Tok and told the Mrs. we needed to watch Return to Oz, but she said she wasn't familiar with it 👀. She asked who was in it and I told her The Waterboy's girlfriend. I bought a digital copy on Fandango for $5 so we'll see how this goes.

Return to Oz, like they go back to the prison?
Ethel_Marie@reddit
I own it on DVD. That's how much I enjoy it.

Great film. Also, pure nightmare fuel.

A disembodied head in a locker waking up and screaming "DOROTHY GAAAAAAAALE!" is an image I cannot cleanse from my brain.
Kinetic_Silverwolf@reddit
I don't think they've ever confirmed it, but the first time I heard "Hall of Heads" by They Might Be Giants I was convinced they wrote it after seeing that scene.

I used to practice reaching for objects in the back of a cabinet, without knocking anything over, in case I was ever in a similar situation as Dorothy in this scene…

Then all the other heads in the giant hallway of disembodied heads start screaming and the headless body sits bolt upright in bed and marches towards the camera.
Sweet dreams, kids.

This was my favorite movie when I was about five. I had a mint colored dress similar to the one the young princess character had, and I wanted a pet chicken.

The wheelers were so scary!
kristosnikos@reddit
Those things terrified tf outta my sis and I yet we watched Return to Oz religiously.
kittelamour@reddit
Same! It was really quite a dark movie for kids.
PSN-Colinp42@reddit
When we got a Mombi callout in the fist Wicked movie, I was really hoping there would be some Wheelers in March of the Witch Hunters in the second. Ah, well!
kittelamour@reddit
A wheelers revamp would be sick!

We watched Wicked 2 last night too! When Glinda picked up the green bottle I told my husband she needed to yell "OZ!" to bring her back.

That movie totally freaked me out as a kid. I did not like when her head came off.

I wish there was a dark fantasy version of the wizard of oz as well. Maybe it wouldn’t work because return takes place when Dorothy is being treated and it puts her in a darker place. Oz is in ruins because she’s is being tortured. But I still love the aesthetic and it’s probably why I’m obsessed with games featuring dead worlds (dark souls, ico trilogy)

Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but there was a series that ran for a season (before it was sadly cancelled) called Emerald City. All the episodes were directed by Tarsem, so it looks surreal and fantastical. Dorothy is a cop transported to Oz, and the wicked witch runs a brothel and has an opium addiction.Ozma is under a spell that is keeping her hidden as a boy under the care of Mombi. They combine a few characters and introduce some others too. The biggest name in the cast is probably Vincent D'Onofrio who played The Wizard. The show was probably developed because the shows Once Upon a Time and Grimm were fairly popular, but those were winding down so maybe viewers had lost interest in shows like that. I thought it was pretty cool though.

The wheelers 😩
jessek@reddit
That’s Nancy from The Craft.
jackfaire@reddit
She's the worst witch. And I love that that's a pun.

Also made my husband watch that last year. I still absolutely loved it, it was one I watched throughout the year, he did not appreciate it though. Even with Tim Curry.

Fairuza Balk's characters always rank high on the hot / crazy graph.

I wish she got more work as an actor
General_Mousse_861@reddit
She’s also Mildred Hubble from The Worst Witch (which also has Tim Curry).
jessek@reddit
She's also The Worst Witch in The Craft.
stucking__foned@reddit
And Piper Laurie, the mom in Carrie and Catherine Martell in Twin Peaks❤️
Stuffleapugus@reddit
Sarah from The Hustler.
jessek@reddit
She's in a lot of movies and tv, I've noticed over the years.

I didn't think of that, but the Mrs likes Adam Sandler movies... know your audience. 😎

Beat me haha

I just watched it a couple months ago with my husband. It holds up. Mombi’s closet full of heads still intrigues and creeps me out at the same time. And of course I love soft hearted Jack the Pumpkin King!
Sad-Bunch-9937@reddit
I thought that movie was TERRIFYING as a kid. And Superman 2. It’s like, scarred me lol
tracefact@reddit
I wasn’t familiar with it but they covered it in an episode of How Did This Get Made and I was intrigued though still haven’t watched it.
kristosnikos@reddit
Fucking love this movie. It’s well made and is just the right kind of unsettling. I watch it every year around Halloween.
daaaaamntam@reddit
Loved that movie, but the wheelers scared the shit outta me. Don’t even get me started with all those heads
dooley711@reddit
Deadly desert!
Pookie-Stinker413@reddit
Watched it in class in 4th grade with no warning. 😱
HTownGuero666@reddit
Had a similar experience. “Class, we’re going to watch a sequel to The Wizard of Oz!”
Really? Never heard of it! Cool! What’s the Tim Man been up… to… JESUS FUCK WHAT IS THIS?!
Pookie-Stinker413@reddit
Like didn't anyone screen it before they wheeled the TV in?
burnafter3ading@reddit
The age before "trigger warnings."
selftaughtgenius@reddit
I loved that move as a kid and I love it now.

One of my favorite films of all time. Fantastic concept - Dorothy's aunt can't take her yapping on about Oz and takes her to a mental hospital where they give her electroshock therapy. The doctor is the gnome king, the nurse is Mombi, the orderlies that push the gurneys are the wheelers, the shock machine is tick-tock... All things that seep into her electroshock fever dream. The perfect movie for little kids.
nic626@reddit
This is the scariest movie I’ve ever seen. I’ve done rewatches as an adult to make sure it wasn’t just a fever dream. Still unsettling as hell
BusinessYou1657@reddit
It was kinda funny one day at college when someone brought it up and the traumatised four year old in the rest of us realised we weren’t alone and it did exist.
highpriestess420@reddit
The hallway of heads 😱

The Gnome King effects still hold up as visually interesting. Then, of course, the Wheelers...
TrustAffectionate966@reddit
She might also recognize her as the leaders of the covenant in The Craft.
