It's Saturday night and you know you owned one of these once upon a time...what were you listening to?

I had to use my brother's. it had a double deck tape system and a tiny tv. I listened to a 2 Live Crew bootleg and my mind was forever warped!!!!

Huey Lewis (Sports), Police (Synchronicity).
RubALlamaDingDong@reddit
The first tape I bought for my new boom box was Synchronicity. I wore that thing out.
dadwearingplaid@reddit
Mostly static as I tried to wiggle my antenna in an often futile attempt to pull in KDAY-AM in Santa Monica from 125 miles away.
Double_Device_1626@reddit
Back when I had one, it was Surf Punks, The Cramps, Quiet Riot and Dio.
Mgcreates@reddit
Our local classic rock station would switch formats to metal every Saturday night at midnight for about 2 or 3 hours. My parents were hyper religious, so this was the forbidden fruit. I'd plug in the headphones and rock out to Ozzy, Dio, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Motorhead, etc.... even record it for later in the week if I needed a fix.
I kinda miss staying up all night for this and sleeping through church the next morning.

drinkslinger1974@reddit
I bought a bunch of rap albums off a kid on the bus. It was all clean 80’s rap and I quickly dubbed them to cassette so I could listen to them without my parents knowing. Remember the biggest conundrum about which format to buy being what you could take with you? I personally resisted a portable cd player because they skipped so badly, but dang if I didn’t feel like a god the first time I switched out my cars tape player for a cd player 🤣🤣🤣

Then listen to them on my Walkman. Wasn't really a Sony but we called all of them Walkmans. You were really cool if your system had Dolby noise reduction and a setting for metal particle tapes. Cause then you were a 14 year old audiophile who knew what he was talking about. Never mind the hiss. That was part of the charm. Like the snap, crackles in the quiet parts of my records. When i replaced my LPs with CD I felt weird not hearing the hiss or the pops

Ali Baba and the 40 thieves…
Pristine-Giraffe-432@reddit
Those were the days, let's keep supporting physical media in some form, I choose CDs, Blu-ray and 4k uhd... It meant something to open the box back in the day and read the liner notes or record sleeve.
PsychologicalLab6637@reddit (OP)
I agree. Every concert I go to I'm still buying a CD at and always a t-shirt!
schmootc@reddit
I went to see Springsteen last night and was just thinking this morning about how you can’t buy CDs at concerts anymore. Maybe just not the ones I go to? And how going to the store to get a new release was such a thing and downloading it is sad in comparison.
Pristine-Giraffe-432@reddit
Holding something in hand is real vs an all digital file... That really means something in a disposable society, keep supporting real stuff. I know I will.

I was an eclectic kid who got moved around a lot. I got my boombox while living in Chicago, so at first it was Beat Street Soundtrack Volumes I & II, LL Cool J, Chicago House bootlegs, Slick Rick, KRS-One, Eric B & Rakim, EPMD, anything Def Jam. Then I got moved to LA and was awash in everything from Digital Underground to Oingo Boingo, from Depeche Mode to Guns N Roses, from Mellow Man Ace and Cypress Hill to The Dead Milkmen and Suicidal Tendancies. Just before the thing died, it was playing The KLF, Delinquent Habits, Ash, College Boyz, Sublime, Space Hog, Das EFX, Moby, among others.

I had a black double-deck ghetto blaster and I got it for my 13th birthday. That sucker lasted me for decades - no joke. It finally keeled over somewhere around 2011, so 40ish years of use. When I bought my first house, it went in to my workshop, and it was my radio for a very long time.
I miss that thing!
Back in the day though when I was 13, I was not allowed to listen to non-Christian music, but I had contraband blank tapes with songs I recorded from the radio. Remember doing that? Listen closely, finger hovered over the pause button, ready to hit it as soon as the song started and you hated it if the DJ kept talking through the opening of the song.
I listening to typical 70's rock & roll and was absurdly obsessed with Hall & Oates, Blondie, Abba (omg, the Abba I listened to), Simon & Garfunkel - just the usual.
My parents loved country & bluegrass, so I also had a love of Johnny Cash, and lot of the best from back then.
I kept my tapes in a Playtex tampons box, because when my dad would toss & search my room, I knew he's never in a zillion years touch anything that 'dirty'. It's also where I hid comic books or I'd keep them in my locker at school.
PsychologicalLab6637@reddit (OP)
That's awesome. I was going to call it ghetto blaster on the title but I didn't know if that was offensive. It wasn't back then. I can't believe yours lasted that long. My brothers was toast after 3 years. It didn't make it into high school with him. Playtex boxes for the win tho!!! I kept all my contraband in them, mostly condoms 😆
