Thoughts While Watching 5x03 Succession

I just watched 5x03 Succession for the first time yesterday, and I thought it was inspired by The Hunger Games. The arena, the fight to the death, the broadcasting, the ringmaster, and the clever resolution. But then I remembered it came out before The Hunger Games! I know it's not really The Hunger Games, but it was still fun to see the parallels. Can anyone else see it, too?

There's a fun 80s movie called The Running Man you gotta check out.

I thought it was inspired by the famous short story The Most Dangerous Game.

This one inspired Dangerous Prey, no?

It definitely could've been!

The premise of a powerful being (god, king, emperor, billionaire, etc.) forcing their “inferiors” to fight each other to the death for their amusement/benefit is common in literature and in history.
The episode is likely inspired by many different literary and historical examples.

Completely fair. The Hunger Games is just something that is referenced more nowadays.

Oh totally. I hope my post didn’t come across as negative in any way. I was just trying to speak to where that familiar feeling comes from. The Hunger Games is actually very close to a Japanese novel called Battle Royale that was published in 1999. So many very similar stories.

No worries! I didn't read it as negative. I appreciate the history lesson.

Ladyhawke is a wonderful movie that could be one of those examples. Hunger games was written much later than the Xena episode aired so it's a fairly good... Successor?
