I'm currently looking for my first car, I am between a 3rd gen z28 (would like a manual), 4th gen mustang, g body or a family friend has a c3 Vette in decent shape for $6k and a 2nd gen z28 for $8k (too much $ and brown)
SirWillae@reddit
None of the above
LoanOk8140@reddit
You don’t need these as first cars. God forbid but odds are you will crash it. Not to mention the maintenance and insurance. Get an Acura or Lexus.
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
Sure I'll crash a 150hp car 😂
CFH016@reddit
I crashed my moms Kia spectra into a tree when I was 16. Have been with countless friends in some sort of an accident while in or just out of high school also. A young man could find a way to total anything and still be arrogant enough to think he's a world class driver with his first car. Not trying to put you down just saying you aren't any different from the rest.
s92e92spen15a55t1ar@reddit
Sounds like a you problem.
CFH016@reddit
The fact you need to chime in with a useless comment like that tells me you're probably too young to afford anything nice without ruining your credit (if you're even old enough for that), and arrogant enough to think you're better than everyone else and it could never happen to you. The jury is still out if you're even old enough to drive without supervision. Don't get upset at people trying to give wisdom to others. If you can't learn from other people's mistakes you probably won't learn from your own either.
s92e92spen15a55t1ar@reddit
Well, you can believe what you want but I've been driving for well over a decade now and have had plenty of track experience with cars and motorcycles. I've never crashed a car on the public street. Never had any traffic violation tickets either, not a single one. If you are careful and just pay attention to the road and the cars around you its pretty hard to crash a car. A fender bender maybe, but its insane to assume that everyone will total their first car. Keep in mind those old cars aren't even fast cars. Even the V8's from that era often produced less than 250hp from the factory. Assuming they are on modern rubber and have functional brakes, it would be plenty safe to drive. Anways, imo, whether someone is likely to crash their depends much more on how they drive, than what car they drive. Just look at altima drivers lol
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
Thank you 🙏
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
Never said I was but the entire point is the 150hp is not the problem it's the driver
CFH016@reddit
You and I agree 100%. I was saying the same, thats how i crashed a car with less hp than that. I'm saying that you're a young man and young men are stupid. No offense, I was one too. You only get smarter/better through the mistakes you make, and all anyone is trying to tell you is you will make mistakes. Better to make them in a vehicle you are ok with wrecking.
Malakai0013@reddit
The fact that youre underestimating like you are is just gonna prove them right, bro.
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
I have raced quads half my life, if you don't give it the throttle it's not gonna go. My quad I got when I was 13 had a power to weight ratio of 10lbs per hp now my quad I just got has 6lbs per hp the Camaro has a 23lbs per hp. Tell me if I'm wrong but as long as you don't go as fast as you can 150hp is not any compared to most kids 😭
s92e92spen15a55t1ar@reddit
Those aren't fast cars lol.. a new Lexus probably has a lot more HP than any of those lol
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
That is true, thank you lol
CFH016@reddit
Any car can take a corner at 60 thats built for 30. Is the road gravel free and do you have good tires, or are you getting the car put on a flatbed after hitting the curb going sideways around it? HP doesn't matter.
AnotherDrone001@reddit
More info on the Mustang? Is it a 94/95? 96-98? Or 99-04? V6 or V8? Manual or auto? Miles?
My first instinct, is go with the Mustang. Depending on the year, miles, motor and transmission, they can be extremely reliable for what they are. I’ve had four cars over the years with the 2-valve 4.6 modular V8, and the lowest mileage one 11k miles when I got it, the highest had 190k, and they all ran great and put up with a LOT of abuse until I sold them.
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
I would go for any year stang that's an 4th gen manual v8, a person in this thread recommended a 96-98 though so I will look more into that
AnotherDrone001@reddit
I had a 97 GT. Not the fastest car but they can sound great and they’re a lot of fun. Tons of cheap mods available.
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
Only thing is the camaros sound so much more muscly/better to me but It seems to me the 3rd gen Camaros have raises so much in price they might not be worth the money anymore
AnotherDrone001@reddit
96-98 can sound great but it’s definitely a smoother sound. Check out YouTube for some sound clips with like an x-pipe and loud mufflers. Like Borla S-type, Magnapack, or SLP Loudmouth.
If you want that deep, pushrod V8 rumble, the 94-95 Mustang GT has the 5.0 V8. Listen to those with an aftermarket H pipe and some Spintech mufflers or MAC prochamber h-pipe. Those can sound pretty nuts.
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
I'll look into it, thanks
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
You know a place other then Facebook marketplace to look for cars? Like we're to find auctions
AnotherDrone001@reddit
I’m not sure about auctions, but Autotempest is pretty good. It cross searches a bunch of different sites, all in one place. You’ll get results from like, Cars & Bids, Cars.com, Autotrader, Craigslist, eBay, Carvana, etc
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
Thank you 🙏

A '94-'04 Mustang GT. The SN95 Mustang has ABS, and '99-'04 has traction control. I can't recommend the 3.8 V6 unless you like replacing head gaskets. The S195 ('05-'12) Mustangs with the 4.0 V6 have issues with the timing chain tensioners ('13-'14 have the 3.7 which is an amazing motor). The 4.6 2V V8 is reliable AF as long as you maintain it. People crap on the '96-'98 for low power output compared to other years. The '94-'95 have the Windsor 5.0. The '99+ have the 4.6 2V PI (Performance Improved) cylinder heads. Honestly as a first car go for the '96-'98 4.6 2V. I had a '98. Plenty of power to get around but not so much I couldn't control it.
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
Sounds good ty 🙏
UncleSlayton77@reddit
Right now that's the plan for my daughter. A 1996 GT in Tangerine ('96-only color).
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
Sick
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
Not enough info be ME, I'd lean towards the C3, or 2nd gen z28. But they may not be right for you, sounds like you're broke, and these aren't generally good first cars unless you have a father who's into cars and willing to help.
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
Well it's not that I won't have the money for the car it's that I don't want to spend that much on a car instantly and my family is very mechanically inclined
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
It's generally better to spend up front for a better car in the first place.
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
What years of the challenger and chargers would be the best for my situation? I want a muscle car sounding engine
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
They all do that, the rest depends on details I don't know yet.
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
Sorry let me further explain, I want a car that sounds like an old school sbc not the new v8s
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
That's all in exhaust design, they all work the same.
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
True but 8k is steep for a first car, I'll look into those
GeneralNonsence@reddit
Personally I would get the C3, but I’m not really a big fan of Camaros outside of the most recent gen and the first gen.
Why do you wanna get such an old car for your first? Not judging just curious
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the input, I just feel like all the people that like cars all have the most common cars that lack personality like the new hellcats and all them, the old cars sound cooler, look more unique, are more rare nowadays and are more economic as well as more simple to work on (ik the 3rd gen camaros had wiring issues) overall I just think the older cars genuinely look amazing and have personality compared to the new cars, I would love a new car but none in my price range would sound the same and look as unique and cool as a older car. Sorry for so many words I really can't describe things well lol
BrokePorscheSnob@reddit
Find the cheapest running v6 new edge Mustang with a manual you can find. They’re fantastic first cars, and they’ll leave money in the budget for a v8 if you upgrade in a couple years after proving you’re responsible and can fix stuff. This would also be safer than what you’re looking at
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
Definitely the smart route
BrokePorscheSnob@reddit
You can have a ton of fun without a ton of horsepower, hence why people always recommend miatas. Faster isn’t better until you develop the skills! I also highly recommend finding ways to race and drive fast off of public roads. Drag strips often run cheap grudge match nights, auto cross is affordable, and you’ll make friends while learning car control. Then you’ll be ready for fast cars and you’ll be safe and smart.
If your parents are involved in this decision, present it to them this way. They want you to be safe and if they see you exercising that judgement they’ll be proud
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
Another smart reply by you lol, I really have no interest in insane power yet I care about tone way more I would rather a 150hp sick sounding car then a 250hp one
ForwardFIRE2030@reddit
Don’t take offense at people warning that you’ll crash your first car. Even if you are a phenomenal driver. Super careful. Never pushing the old beast at all, you are surrounded by the worst drivers in your geographical area. If you don’t crash it. They will crash into you. So only a suitable first car if it’s gonna be sitting in the garage being worked on while your bum a ride to school with a buddy and go to work on a bike.
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
All good, thanks!
Ok_Cycle_7081@reddit
Depends on your goals. Lots of differences within the models as well.
If pick a tpi 5 speed 3rd gen or a 5 speed 94/95 gt personally. Super t10 3rd gen as well
CaptainQuiz0978@reddit (OP)
Cool, thanks
