is going for a 850w PSU overkill for 4070 + 9600x?

will probably be constantly using this PC, and some other posts online are recommending 1.5x or 2x the estimated wattage for headspace, but different posts claim that 850w is far overkill for a 4070, thoughts?

It's a good part to have a little extra. That and the case are the few parts you can keep recycling for new builds so it's good to have a PSU that can handle anything

It doesn’t hurt anything.. definitely wouldn’t say an 850w psu is ever overkill. 1000w? Yeah. Unless you’re on a budget, it’s one of those parts that is always going to work in any build(unless going from atx/tower to sff build of course) so why not go overboard?

Sometimes it's just too cheap to pass up. Built 2 PCs last year...1 was on a "budget" because I was getting combos on everything at MicroCenter. They were disco'ing a Maingear 1K PSU for cheaper than any 850w, if I bought it as part of the combo. Guess what I got.

2 PCs? That’s my guess

I built 2 differnt ones, differnt specs...the lower spec'd one had some massive deals going.
For example bought a Ryzen motrherboard combo with RAM...added an extra 16GB to go to 32 because that had a sale price. Bought a 6900XT on "leftover" as they were blowing them out for $550 if purchased with one of their MB combos. An extra $100 off as the 7900s were new at the time. And the same applied to the Maingear 1K PSU. $25 off if bought with their MB combos. It was an in-store special.

It's a little overkill but it's well within the range of acceptable as it gives room for basically any GPU upgrade.

No such things as PSU overkill. If you can afford the 850 go for it. Having overhead with your PSU is a good thing.

There is but the only thing it hurts is your bank account.

Buying a cheap one hurts it even now believe it or not

1000w is probably overkill, it's all relative. I feel like there is a big jump in hardware between the 850 and 1000. Most importantly, a high quality unit is more important than the max wattage. Google for SPL's PSU Tier Lists, and check out cybenetics.com for ratings. I'm partial to NZXT c850 PSUs from BestBuy for A+ tier, warranty, and value. I'm in the USA though.
BTW- I like Asus Prime gpus for features/value also.

Uh yeah lol. Even 650w would be sufficient for that.

I went 850 with a 7800xt and 7600x so I had headroom to upgrade
Serious-Map-1230@reddit
Well the minimum recommended psu power for a 5070 is 650W, that included a questimate on total system power.
Your system total shows 434W 434 x 1.5 = 651...so guess that recommendation is pretty darn accurate, but that is minimum recommended. 434 x 2 would 868, so 850W, that is on the high end of margin.
So a psu from 650 to 850 is fine. 850 is a wide margin, not overkill for a 430W system.
