I know its not technically a comic book movie but I'd add "Darkman" to the list.
Admirable_Average_32@reddit
Love them all but Dick Tracy was so fun!
znavy264@reddit
DerpDerpys@reddit
My first movie crush was Madonna in Dick Tracy.
Josephthebear@reddit (OP)
Lol my sister had the Doll let's just say it was atomically, correct 🍈🍈
ICPGr8Milenko@reddit
Like, is eff an atomically correct Madonna. Maybe not an anatomically correct I've, but definitely atomically correct.
Josephthebear@reddit (OP)
Gets a lot of hate but I think it's super underated
kcknuckles@reddit
zoom518@reddit
The stigma that it was popular, but not Batman 1989 popular.
TheDukeofArgyll@reddit
Warren Beatty was a huge fan right? He’d been trying to make that movie for decades and owned the rights to it.
Josephthebear@reddit (OP)
Yeah he wrote and directed it. I didn't know it was like a whole decade process stuff but definitely got greenlit after Batman 1989
Original_Ad8991@reddit
Loved it as a kid, haven’t seen it in at least 30 years. Need to give it another watch
JPMoney81@reddit
Also because it reminds me of that Flanders as a kid scene.
BAM! I'm Dick Tracy! Take that Pruce Face!
Now I'm Prune Face! Take that, Dick Tracy!
Now I'm Prune Tracy! Take that, Dick..
NED!
junkee940@reddit
Just watched this on VHS today!
username__0000@reddit
I still listen to the soundtrack. And it gave us vogue. Which makes no sense in terms of the movie.
But whatever. lol
The soundtrack was written by the same people who brought us Sweeney todd or whatever (which I only know of because of the office)
Stoned_RT@reddit
I remember the hype about it before the premiere. THAT’S what made me want to see it. I’m a sucker like that. But, it’s a really fun movie because all those actors became those characters. Absolutely perfectly cast and performed. Too bad the Oscar for Best Cast wasn’t around back then.
bikeonychus@reddit
Me and my brother loooooooved Dick Tracy! I haven't seen it in years though, I've got to change that.
jessek@reddit
People act like the 90s was a terrible point in time for comic book movies because of the Joel Schumacher Batman sequels but it was the same decade that had The Rocketeer, Dick Tracy, TMNT, Mystery Men, Blade and The Crow.
Gonzostewie@reddit
Mystery Men is a gem. Stacked cast. Great gags. Lots of fun.
IceSmiley@reddit
That was the first movie I'd seen with an interracial couple and no point was made of it
Gonzostewie@reddit
If anybody is gonna shovel well, it's Bill fuckin Macy.
Gnagus@reddit
Based Paul Reubens performance.
hamburgler26@reddit
I kind of like how we got the two Tim Burton Batmans, which are excellent. Then we went camp with Batman Forever and it is a lot of fun. Then Batman & Robin just went completely insane in such a laughable way that it is still kinda fun.
ouijahead@reddit
I was a fan of Batman without question. I liked anything and everything Batman. Robin was my guy. And that movie still managed to leave a bad taste in my mouth.
supergooduser@reddit
Crow was in there at 1994
IceSmiley@reddit
And Sting in WCW for people who didn't watch
ouijahead@reddit
Can’t believe they remade it a few years ago. The movie is timeless. Just flawless. It does not need a remake. Other than the soundtrack, it practically doesn’t age.
Somegirls85@reddit
Honorable mention The Rocketeer
IceSmiley@reddit
I didn't know that was from a comic
Spartan04@reddit
That movie was so much fun. Plus Jennifer Connelly…
hamburgler26@reddit
Jay-Breeze@reddit
Me when I think about Jennifer Connelly!
JPMoney81@reddit
Connelly in Rocketeer and Career Opportunities is the best looking any human ever has or ever will look, in my opinion.
I've yet to see anyone as gorgeous at any other point in my life.
That horse riding scene in Career Opportunities just seared itself into my brain.
Derrick_Mur@reddit
At the time, she was lost on me
wrenwood2018@reddit
I was too young when the movie to understand the closest you will get to heaven line at the end. Now I totally get it.
Hour_Affect3046@reddit
That white dress lives rent free in my head more than I’d care to admit. It’s iconic and classic
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
I can't see this without hearing Frank Drebin suggesting, "Lady and the Tramp!" 💀
ouijahead@reddit
I remember that was all Disney had going for it for years . Remember Disney free weekends ? For like 5 years they’d be like “ And we have the Rocketeer !!!… yay!”
PreparationFrosty936@reddit
Came here for this ^
AllHailKeanu@reddit
I loved this movie. Also Disney Junior made a cartoon version recently that my kids liked!
The-Great-Mullein@reddit
Oh man, I near forgot about this.
Derrick_Mur@reddit
Loved that movie as a kid. Saw it when it came out on VHS back in the day
Puffyfugu8@reddit
Oh shoot I forgot about that movie!

Oaken_beard@reddit
Ok_Breakfast5425@reddit
You forgot the greatest comic book movie
zoom518@reddit
The actual first Marvel movie
Josephthebear@reddit (OP)
I also forgot to add dark man the non-comic comic book movie
The_Goondocks@reddit
Up there as one of my favorites. For an original "comic book" IP, this as good as it gets. Plus, it's like an inverse Invisible Man, which is my favorite of all the classic Universal movies. Feel like we need a proper sequel, aside from the straight-to-video movies.
Sharticus123@reddit
A young Liam Neeson.
ialsohaveadobro@reddit
Hey, human lady, wanna... have visual contact with my duck penis?
IZZ5150@reddit
I give the credit to Tim Burton, Jim Henson, and Doug Drexler…
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
Dick Tracy was somehow very relevant in the early 90s
Into-the-stream@reddit
It was like a transition point. Bright colours and campiness of the 80s, with the moody, more cynical self awareness of the 90s.
Sweet-Apricot8568@reddit
ryhoyarbie@reddit
I’m going to get thrown under the buss for this but I don’t care. I never really cared for Batman Returns. It’s just a gothic style Tim Burton film with Batman thrown in for a few scenes.
I read that Warner Bros gave him pretty much control of the film where as in the first Batman film Warner Bros had most of the control. Huge difference in the two films. Even Danny Elfman’s score in the first film felt more theatrical where as Returns felt more like a gothic style weird vibe similar to his Nightmare Before Christmas and Beetlejuice scores.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
I hated ALL the 90s Batmans. It took a lot of convincing for me to watch the Nolan trilogy.
ouijahead@reddit
I will take the downvotes. I thought the army of penguins with missles on their backs was stupid. Made it campy.
Josephthebear@reddit (OP)
The only thing that he had a hand was the characters and art design in nightmare before Christmas everything else was director Henry Selick. Also Elfman had huge fallout with Burton thats why Ed Wood had a different composer
TheLastBoat@reddit
ouijahead@reddit
Do you remember meteor man ?
TinHeartWarriors@reddit
I choked on a hot tamale and almost died the 8th time I went to this movie
timthemajestic@reddit
I always think about Batman and how the die hard fans of the comics were so pissed about Keaton being cast, because they thought he didn't know anything about the comics. Burton gave him a lot of comic books to study, and he got that dark and deadpan delivery down pat. The studio also tricked Robin Williams in to thinking they wanted him for the Joker role so they could secure Jack Nicholson. Robin was blindsided and hurt that they would use him as leverage. They also considered him for the Riddler, but he lost that out to Jim Carrey who was the correct choice.
whyneedaname77@reddit
If the internet was a thing it would have broken was Michael Keaton was cast. Me and my friends mocked it so much. We were like Mr. Mom is batman? And he killed it. We were kids we didn't see Clean and Sober. I didn't know what acting really was at that age. I just knew names.
eatelectricity@reddit
Which is funny, because the internet took a shit when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker, and he killed it.
ouijahead@reddit
I remember how apeshit they went over Ben Affleck, right here on Reddit .
hamburgler26@reddit
Which is funny because the same thing happened with Bruce Willis and Die Hard.
I think other than seeing Mr. Mom when I was super young, and mostly just remember the vacuum cleaner scene, Batman was the first movie I really remember Keaton in and to me he's just the perfect Batman. Both as Bruce Wayne and as Batman.
I think Christian Bale made a great Bruce Wayne, but his Batman voice just never quite worked for some reason to me.
ouijahead@reddit
The voice … ugghh . Too easy to make fun of.
senik@reddit
With Keaton it was because he had been primarily a comedic actor up to that point We didn’t know at the time that he would become one of the greatest actors of his generation. Imagine later if someone like Jason Segel got cast instead of Christian Bale for Batman Begins. It’s along those same lines.
Josephthebear@reddit (OP)
Well everyone doubted Heath Ledger
hamburgler26@reddit
I remember when people were worried about him being cast, but for some reason I remembered him in 10 Things I Hate About You and just felt like he was going to nail it.
Josephthebear@reddit (OP)
Robin was still pushing for the role in the Dark Knight series but honestly he aged out of it at that point
Drab_Majesty@reddit
I remember getting the plastic Dick Tracy hat at the movies when it came out.
Mudcreek47@reddit
I fell for the hype of the Dick Tracy movie since it was marketed as "THE NEXT BATMAN!". I remember buying one of those "Official movie magazines" by Topps or whoever published them, some stickers, and a pair of Dick Tracy comic art boxers. At one point I even got some kind of a Dick Tracy figure/doll thing. Oddly, I never saw the movie until way later, and it wasn't that great.
Oh, and I was all of 12 years old. Madonna's Vogue video (from the I'm Breathless album inspired by the movie) really was an eye opener for me. That thing was on repeat on MTV for like a solid year which I always enjoyed watching ... for some reason! LOL
2reeEyedG@reddit
That TMNT poster goes so hard. I was enamored with it as a kid
The_Goondocks@reddit
For 11 year old me, Batman '89 was a total game changer. The marketing, the toys, the Prince videos... The #1 thing I wanted for Christmas that year was the VHS. I wore that tape out. And had seen 3 times in the theater. I think UHF was also out at the same time. Memories...
whyneedaname77@reddit
UHF should be looked at more. That was such a good movie.
The_Goondocks@reddit
Still hilarious

I was at a job a month ago. There were firemen there. I said if they find the marble in the oatmeal do they drink from the fire hose? They were like what? I showed them the clip and they couldn't stop laughing.

Late 80s early 90s were the best!
phigene@reddit
Fun fact: when I was a kid I couldnt see the negative space image of the batman logo and so i was always super confused why batmans symbol was a mouth with weird round teeth.
BrattyTwilis@reddit
Men in Black was a comic book movie as well
Josephthebear@reddit (OP)
Yeah but it's far from what the comic is
Blurstingwithemotion@reddit
Ninja turtles was a big deal
Zerostar39@reddit
MostSharpest@reddit
I completely forgot this thing existed, but I got a flashback while having sensible chuckles at the Rocketeers and Dick Tracys listed here: "That one basketball guy running around with a big hammer."
Steel (1997).
whyneedaname77@reddit
As i am thinking about this. There really was something just memorable about the summer blockbuster season.
There were hits and misses. I remember some marketing campaigns.
Austin Powers 2 went if you see one movie this summer see Star Wars the Phantom Menace. If you see a second one watch this.
Unopposed_Weirdo@reddit
Can't forget about Spawn
Josephthebear@reddit (OP)
John leguizamo killed that role. Spawn was meh but his Clown was amazing
whyneedaname77@reddit
Spawn was ok. Than the cartoon came out and I saw that and Spawn was garbage after I saw that. That cartoon was good.
hamburgler26@reddit
He seems to always kill it no matter what the movie.
Spicy_Potato_Person@reddit
This was a weird one, but it grows on you.
Josephthebear@reddit (OP)
Thomas Jane will always be my Punisher..
namarukai@reddit
I’d throw Blade into the mix as well even if it was a little late for us.
Josephthebear@reddit (OP)
If you're going to throw in Blade, you got to throw in The Shadow and The Phantom
namarukai@reddit
I’m happy to bring them to the party as well!
whyneedaname77@reddit
I need to watch Dick Tracy again. I think I only saw it once in the theater and I didn't like it. But I read what they were going for the colors and such and wonder if it was better than I thought as a kid.
hamburgler26@reddit
Oh yeah the visuals in the movie are incredible. I loved it as a kid but my dad was a huge fan so I knew all the characters and I think just had fun with the wristwatch and The Kid and all the action.
beardedjack@reddit
I’m thinking this too. I stated watching a YouTube video about the making and reception of the film and how it broke Warren Beatty. Interesting stuff
whyneedaname77@reddit
Yeah it seemed like it tried to do something unique and different like Sin City. Which I loved.
Somegirls85@reddit
Also, I think it was really awesome that when they re-released the turtles for its 25th anniversary. All these dads were taking their kids to see the movie for the first time
Chemtrails_in_my_VD@reddit
Pre cgi comic movies were so good. Probably my biggest old guy take, but I can't make through any of the modern Marvel flicks. So dull. Sometime people will say "Watch Logan or Deadpool," and I do and they're just regular marvel flicks with decapitations and f bombs, respectively.
Josephthebear@reddit (OP)
In my personal opinion Deadpool's kind of overrated. He's just a rated r version of Bugs Bunny personally, I miss non-cgi cities that were sets. They looked so much more gritty
Chemtrails_in_my_VD@reddit
Agreed. I wish they'd bring back a Jim Henson philosophy to special effects, but I know it won't ever happen because of the huge cost difference. Sucks though because when practical effects are prioritized and CGI as a tool when necessary, you get something like Mad Max Fury Road, which was pretty great.
Josephthebear@reddit (OP)
Or LotR... Practical effects died with him. Then Jurassic Park hit the theaters and that was nail in the coffin
Chemtrails_in_my_VD@reddit
Yup. But in JP's defense, the original did what they could. The t rex was a real piece on set that was embellished with cgi.
bashturd@reddit
I loved all of these but was obsessed with Dick Tracy. Had a long yellow rain jacket, and a cheap yellow straw fedora style hat. Thought I was the shit.
artfully_dejected@reddit
Classics. The lot of them.
BadAtExisting@reddit
Dick Tracy was so awesome
ShankillButcher77@reddit
Batman 1-3 were good when we were kids, but we didn’t have many other options. Superman was old by then. What others did we have?
Key_Permission_3351@reddit
"That depends. Do you like penicillin on your pizza?"
phantombrains@reddit
"Doh! Bom-bom BOM. bom Bom BOM!"
Jairoglyphics1@reddit
This was such a big deal back then as a kid!
ShowMeYourHappyTrail@reddit
The fact that Warren Beatty posts something Dick Tracy every few years to keep the rights from movie from deleting just as revenge because they wouldn't make a second movie with him as Dick kills me.
ialsohaveadobro@reddit
It was terrible. Sorry for people's nostalgia, but that was a bad movie.
One-Earth9294@reddit
I was fucking OBSESSED with Batman when that movie came out.
And mildly obsessed with Dick Tracy when that movie came out.
Still stands out to me how much movies pandered to our very specific demographic back then. Like, Ghostbusters was originally more of an adult comedy but we latched onto it so hard that Hollywood was like 'Oh we need to re-jigger this baby for 10 year old boys now because they are the guiding hand of the market' lol.
fromthedarqwaves@reddit
Dick Tracy was so cool for its day. The first Batman, TMNT and dick Tracy (maybe who framed Roger rabbit) were so different than most movies I saw. Target had a whole aisle of dick Tracy merchandize in the seasonal section, not the video section. It was a big deal. Plus Madonna at peak Madonna.
small___potatoes@reddit
I had a Dick Tracy themed birthday party. We were ready.
Nutz_Von_Krazy@reddit
I remember seeing Dick Tracy at midnight with the t shirt ticket!
suspicious_hyperlink@reddit
Iirc a ton of epic movies were released that year

It really seemed like magic when I was kid. The amount of excitement over batman and ninja turtles was insane.
