Changing the color of your headset?
Posted by sdgunz@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 35 comments
Hello,
So my girlfriend enjoys GA flying, but has mentioned that she would prefer to have a green or pink headset.
Looking online I've seen a few options from brands I don't recognize.
I'm currently using Lightspeed Sierra headsets.
Are there any options such as stickers or painting a headset to change it's color?
Thanks.

David Clark headsets are green.

Wrong color green apparently.

You're doomed.

I bedazzled mine

I've only done this with DC ....
Disassemble. Then you can either spray-paint the ear cups, or if you want something different, have them hydro-dipped. Then reassemble.

Masking tape and rattle can of your favorite color from the aviation paint isle at your local aviation store. I've done it twice. Easy part is finding the color.
ForgotTheLandingGear@reddit
Out of interest why use aviation paint? I haven’t looked but wouldn’t a rattle can from an autostore be way cheaper? (I’m from the UK so I’m guessing you can buy them from there like we can from say a Halfords)
aftcg@reddit
Lol. There is no local aviation parts store or paint isle. We say that over here to mean "use unapproved non aviation things from Halfords to keep your old af unsupported, parts made of unobtainum, plane flying. The FAA can't tell the difference"

Theres a few sellers on Etsy that makes those for a few headsets.

I slapped a purple and lilac decal from Etsy on my A20’s 4 years ago. It still looks new. I recommend using a hair dryer on low to act as a gentle heat gun when applying it.

We've seen them for Bose headsets. Prefer to not need to buy a new headset, but is an option.
Prefect_99@reddit
Tell her it's already pink and she is colourblind.
One point for every other person you get to join you in your web of deceit.
cutebuny@reddit
I have a buddy and he would spray paint his a20 like once a year I think he still does it

I'm really confused about how someone can be flying in an airplane and care about the color of their headset. It seems like the most inconsequential thing there is. You can't even see it while wearing it. How could that have any bearing on anything related to the flight, or your enjoyment of it?
"That was pretty cool, thanks for taking me along! Definitely would have been better if my headset was pink though..."
KITTYONFYRE@reddit
you could say the same thing about the plane's paint job, but I bet you could easily see why someone would care about that
Cessnateur@reddit
It's not that people care so much about the color of their headset. It's that various small things that might be inconsequential to some provide a bit of happiness to others.
I know plenty of people who, when the flight is just about done, fixate on parking precisely on the yellow stripe, with their nose tire perfectly centered. Does that level of precision matter? Not really. Do they truly care so much that their flight or day would be ruined if they don't achieve such precision? Not at all. It's simply a small thing that makes them happy.
Mammoth_Impress_3108@reddit
I mean, to be fair, you can't say that you had a good flight or are a good pilot if you screw up the parking job lol
Veggie-Smoothie@reddit
Let people have the things that make them happy :)

Can customize them yourself. This guy's stripped and polished his lightspeeds. Look amazing.

Impressive work.
Don't think the Sierra model has the metal ear cups.
Mundane-Reality-7770@reddit
No. But the point remains... You can customize yourself with a little elbow grease
TxAggieMike@reddit
It doesn’t.
Mad_Rooster_7164@reddit
Can’t one of her other boyfriends deal with it?

Plasti Dip. Did a whole car once.
pattern_altitude@reddit
I like the vinyl wrap idea.
On a less serious note, buy some David Clarks and call it a day if green will do?
sdgunz@reddit (OP)
David Clark is not the correct color green apparently.
TooLowFlaps@reddit
Anyone with a wife or girlfriend understands. Say no more. Good luck.
hbh110@reddit
You don’t recognize Dave Clark’s?
JumboTrijet@reddit
Does she make comments on the color of your metric wrench set in your toolbox?
capn_starsky@reddit
Rit dyes work well on plastics.
looper741@reddit
*Some plastics. Doesn’t work on hard plastics like ABS.
ziksy9@reddit
Dye, hydrodip, plasti-dip, vinyl wrap, auto paint, lots of ways to go, but anything but vinyl will require complete disassembly.
karantza@reddit
I have two Sierras, and distinguished then because one was slightly blue tinted. Totally not because I just forgot to remove the plastic scratch protector, not at all.
RyzOnReddit@reddit
Vinyl wrap like you’d use on a car should work.
