2001 Peugeot 306 intermittent "STOP" in dash, possible causes?

I've had this light come on for a second or so when driving, there is no related reason nor any noticeable loss of power or issues when this happens; the light just blips on and off a couple of times and then never again until about a week later.
The car is up to date with all maintenance and I'm religious about services. I'm having problems finding a mechanic that has the (Peugeot peopietary, non-OBD) reader and I don't want to do exploratory surgery on the engine.
Any ideas as to what it might be with this limited information or is taking it apart the only option.
I could buy the Lexia3 reader from a number of UK shops, it's not that expensive (90 £), but shipping is like 300 and there's no guarantee it'll work.
Don't know what to do so any ideas are appreciated.

It's a tough nut to diagnose even with Lexia - the 306 had ancient sensor-system, not much information you can gain. I'd spend the money on a fresh fuel filter and fresh oil instead. Maybe take off the oil sump and see what's going in there as well. Not all residues may get caught by the oil filter, thus it is somewhat expected that the oil pump can encounter a few larger particles, especially if it's an old diesel.
