Thoughts on the recent resignation of 3 Greek ministers over the EU farm subsidy scandal?

Resignations means nothing, they need to be set accountable for their actions and get punished.
mikewazoski59@reddit
First Crete then Greece ✊🏻
UzayK@reddit
LOL is crete like the sicily of italy or something? Genuine question
TheNihilistGeek@reddit

morbihann@reddit
Isn't Crete also Greece ?
Arpaxtiko21@reddit
History & geography seems your weak subjects dude
morbihann@reddit
In what way ?
mikewazoski59@reddit
True but Cretan prosperity always comes before Athenian bureaucracy.
morbihann@reddit
What is the root of this division ?
magnificent_wts@reddit
A bunch of former and current rich politicians are cretan. Like the pictured dildo.
Worried-Owl-9198@reddit
What the hell is that supposed to mean?
FantasticQuartet@reddit
The vast majority of the EU farm subsidy scandal happened in the island of Crete.
Also Mitsotakis is of Cretan descent.
mikewazoski59@reddit
Instead of going to Brussels or Athens, it ended up in our people's pockets. Good for them! As long as Crete wins, I don't care how.

You are everything wrong with Greece. Everything else I can live with, people like you are the only thing that keeps me from liking it.
Defiant_Being_9222@reddit
Least regionalist Cretan;
PieBright8211@reddit (OP)
Why do Cretans talk this way? Are they seeking independence or autonomy? What's the deal with you guys?
Lvl100Centrist@reddit
They have historically been very corrupt (its not a recent thing) and a disproportionate number of political leaders originate from there. They are used to receiving preferential treatment, they are like a spoiled brat who leeches of their parents and is used to stomping his feet to get whatever he wants
Substratas@reddit
Because they’re culturally similar to Italians, not to Balkaners.
Fatalaros@reddit
This isn't the case with all Cretans. Crete is however a very big island with significant population, that has both a a productive agricultural/fishing sector and tourist sector - almost self-sufficiet. Given that it is also an island, communities there have developed independently to the rest of Greece giving it a stronger regional identity (as if Greeks aren't already super regionalists) with strong family and community bonds. Did I mention the gun culture? So big voter base, coupled with difficulty to conduct inspections and control gives rise to criminal activities, corruption, family mafias and all our favourite balkan activities. Very good food also.
Defiant_Being_9222@reddit
Of course they aren't seeking independence, lmao. If they were independent, they wouldn't be able to steal funds from other Greeks.
Also, I was joking... I hope most Cretans don't think like this. Then again, I have nothing to do with Crete, so I wouldn't know. All I know is they have been dominating the political scene lately. Both the PM and the opposition leader are from Crete.

Uhhhhhh no, they just “stole” the amounts that could’ve gone to other Greek farmers, who didn’t have any high-up political connections.

Worried-Owl-9198@reddit
Greek ministers
ddykl123@reddit
They do that, and then they proceed to tell you it's not their fault and "there's hardly any spillage" and "you're overreacting".

„dear EU, it seems that Greece has 5 billion sheep more then last year. Please increase aid proprtionally. Thanks“
Jazzlike-Moose3123@reddit
This has been going on for decades now i think?
Our politicians only want to get us in EU so they can steal that money for themselves lol.
CockamouseGoesWee@reddit
And this is why everyone left Greece because it's led by these dipshits.
Substratas@reddit
The unfortunate thing is that the local politicians are nothing but the reflection of the average citizen at the peak of their power. It’s the local, ultra corrupt cultures that breed such monsters in the Balkans, so they won’t be disappearing anytime soon.
merdeauxfraises@reddit
As a Greek I have to agree. I don't think the average citizen is better than the corrupt politicians and would totally do the same if they found themselves in power. That said, the average doesn't mean 100% of the population. There are still about 40%-50% of the people who are genuinely good and honest and are suffering because the rest of the population are complete and utter dipshits.
meremetallica@reddit
That's ironic considering the current government got an even higher percentage of votes from Greeks living abroad that it did from Greeks living in Greece. More specifically in the USA they got more than 60% of the votes which is unimaginable.
CockamouseGoesWee@reddit
There is absolutely no one sane to vote for. You've got the Devil or Satan to choose from. It's like how Kim Jong Un gets 100% of the vote every year
meremetallica@reddit
It is a choice between absolute incompetence and absolute corruption. Absolute corruption seems to have the upper hand for now.
CockamouseGoesWee@reddit
100% my dude. And it's depressing seeing people fall for extremism
merdeauxfraises@reddit
Not enough. I want all of the implicated people GONE and JAILED.

My thoughts: great for Greece.
Happy-Hour88@reddit
A country that relies mostly on tourism and agriculture will never be a modern, wealthy society.
Ujemegaz@reddit
Tourism is the worst. I miss those days when we had all the beaches to ourselves.
Substratas@reddit
Do you think the reason we don’t have them for ourselves anymore is because of tourism?
Ujemegaz@reddit
Well, you can't grow crops in the sand.

More_Ad_5142@reddit

depends. how many goats do you own, brother?
Electronic_Ad_6171@reddit
They should learn from the Albanian PM, which has made corruption legal.
kodial79@reddit

Ujemegaz@reddit
At least they have the decency to resign.

Greece is a country with huge potential, yet terrible purchasing power. Something needs to change.
psyspin13@reddit
Hum ho, have you forgotten the misanthropic bailout agreements and insane austerity measures Greece had to endure (and still does). The only purpose of these misanthropic austerity measures were to kill any purchasing power. Greece lost > 30% of its GDP within a few years, Ukraine that has many years of war lost LESS than that. Productivity plummeted, salaries/pensions were slashed around 50% and STILL Greece is under the bailout agreements, meaning it CANNOT increase salaries/pensions (it needs to maintain insane budget surplus that not even industrial countries like Germany COULD maintain in their golden years) . So, any surplus the Government makes, goes to the ECB.
Of course it doesnt help at all that the current government is the most corrupt Greece has seen in the last 40-50 years.
CorazonCracker@reddit
We really are the potential man of the Balkans
Fuzzy_Pen_6006@reddit
I hope that Croatia won’t be next Greece. We also heavily rely on tourism, yet we have potential to feed half of the Europe.
Different-Ring1510@reddit
Can't build infrastructure and strong cities overnight.. some countries went for it early on.. others were chilling.. Croatian mentality is killing the potential progress.. people are happy with having enough..
Redararis@reddit
greek society is addicted in clientelism like americans on fentanyl.
Lvl100Centrist@reddit
what is interesting about this is the coordinated social media operation to distract from this, even on reddit on some subreddits here
censorship and lack of press freedom are at an all time high in greece. The government literally pays (via our taxes) online trolls to subvert, poison and destroy online spaces. This group is literally named "Truth Team" (or "Ομάδα Αλήθειας" in greek).
The name "Truth Team" is obviously Orwellian but that is not the worst of it. Our government was responsible for the death of 79 people in the Tempi train crash and they are funding online trolls to mock their relatives and anyone who protested this or was even affected by this.
This level of informational wafare from a government against its own innocent citizens is rare for European standards. They should make a (or several) documentaries about this, and they have, and I think more will come.
This level of cruelty is unecessary, excessive and basically comical in its intensity. They are like cartoon villains. You kill someone's kids and then pay trolls to mock their death? Saddam Hussein would be proud.
the_lonely_creeper@reddit
I agree, but you have a typo. It's 59 dead, not 79.
Substratas@reddit
Isn’t that what Russia is doing rn too? With all those paid online trolls? F*cking insane 🫢
Remarkable_Echo5685@reddit
Similar situation in Serbia
Inkaara@reddit
For everyone reading this btw we know their accounts because they are ridiculously blatant about it, for example following the government's red scare propaganda recently, and nothing is being done about them.

They should disband their whole party not replace their lost members
FantasticQuartet@reddit
It will be interesting to see if Mitsotakis will manage to maintain the dominance he had last elections. Not just because of the scandals, but also because his opponents are much more numerous this time. New political parties are being formed.
Dadsfinest93@reddit
the problem is just that they're too fragmented. A unified progressive-left party would be great, social democrats.
FantasticQuartet@reddit
True. The left has a big problem in Greek in that they can't agree on anything. SYRIZA alone has how many spin off parties by now?
korko13@reddit
Just another day in the columbia of Balkans as we the Greeks call our country. These scandals are something that is happening since the first day we started taking monet from the EU and we all know it. The difference is that for the first time we have proof and the politicians are going against the people that they gave the money....
