When did lemon meringue pie go out of fashion? What other desserts do you not see any more?

Just had the thought there that I haven't even seen one referenced in a long time, let alone somebody making one for a party!
Albowonderer@reddit
Summer fruit pudding Semolina Black forest gateau Angel delight Queen of pudding Spotted dick Plum pudding Poached pears
Boring_While_3341@reddit
Black Forest Gateaux - a loss for Cherry lovers everywhere.
Kathiye@reddit
Honestly I don't think I've seen anything described as a gateaux in years. We used to get a lovely chocolate gateaux for special occasions.
EUskeptik@reddit
It’s a gateau. Gateaux is the plural.
One gateau, two gateaux.
-oo-
Kathiye@reddit
In my defence, I haven't seen one (or many) since I was about 10!
EUskeptik@reddit
You’re forgiven. 😁👍

Soggy-Blood9603@reddit
Sarah Lee? I used to love those…
blondererer@reddit
There’s a shop called the Cake Solution near me. They tend to have it in.
Sensitive-Question42@reddit
My son is turning 13 tomorrow and not ten minutes ago we picked up a Black Forest Torte (not sure how different that is from a gateau) for his party!
He loves them, they are his favourite cake!
Popular_Mousse_3958@reddit
Oh my goodness. It was my favourite 😻.
snapper1971@reddit
They're still available in a lot of shops - the frozen section. I know they're available there, it's why I'm on statins...
PurplePlodder1945@reddit
When I was a teenager (80s) my mother worked in a factory canteen. Every year on our birthday, my mother would buy my sister and I a catering sized Black Forest gateaux. I got so sick of them. I’ve hated them ever since. Hate anything cherry apart from fresh cherries
foxwithwifi@reddit
I made one for a dinner party a few months ago and it was a hit! Decadent breakfasts followed.
Ynoxz@reddit
I had an excellent one at a mate's wedding in Germany a few years ago.
Thing is, I'd been heavily on the beers and was hoping to eat it to sober up a bit. It must have had an entire bottle of cherry liqueur in it!

Lidl used to do a lovely frozen one! Havent seen it in yonks
Ok_Monitor_7897@reddit
They still do. It was my requested pudding on mother's day.
360Saturn@reddit (OP)
My local doesn't! I'll look further afield then
wearecake@reddit
Made my dad my best rendition of this a few trades ago. MMM
Infinite_Thanks_8156@reddit
Don’t most supermarkets sell them? Lol
naynaeve@reddit
My husband’s favourite cake.

I used to love a creamy cherry chocolate gateaux. You're right, not seen that for years

Black Forest Gateau? 🤔

DoIKnowYouHuman@reddit
Last one I had was from a Somerfield, so I’ve been without since at least 2009
QuiteFrankE@reddit
I buy mine from Asda or Iceland regularly. Both are nice.
StereotypicallBarbie@reddit
Iceland do a giant one at Xmas!
QuiteFrankE@reddit
Ah ok. That makes sense why I only see the giant ones occasionally. Must be a Christmas thing.
StereotypicallBarbie@reddit
Yeah I think it’s the party food section they bring out every year.
BabyAlibi@reddit
One of my favourites
StereotypicallBarbie@reddit
Aldi do a frozen version which is really quite delicious.. but they only have it at Xmas.
Far-Dimension3508@reddit
They tried to revive it again over the last few years but it never quite worked
Timely_Egg_6827@reddit
I had a deconstructed one in a restaurant last year. Very nice. But Iceland still do a good one.
Ned-Nedley@reddit
Shite. Bad excuse for a cake.
Andi-anna@reddit
I had a craving for treacle tart a couple of months ago. I couldn't find one anywhere. Even looking online, barely any supermarkets stock it anymore.
BoopingBurrito@reddit
Arctic roll needs to make a comeback...stat!
blondererer@reddit
I had a craving for this and couldn’t find it anywhere
BoopingBurrito@reddit
Its my partners favourite dessert. No one sells them anymore. Its crazy, so many folk online say they would love to be able to buy them but no one makes them. Not even some shitty cheap knock off brand.

Buying them in individual portions from a meal prep company isn't what I really had in mind. But thanks.

i found one in asda a couple of years ago. haven’t looked in a while.

also remembered Lyons Maid make it still i think as an ice cream roll. got one from my village shop not long ago. I don’t like them - but my husbands favourite.

No idea if it's any good but I googled off the back of this thread as it was an almost weekly school pudding! I reckon it's online purchase only now though
blondererer@reddit
Oo thank you!
TheHootOwlofDeath@reddit
Treacle tart is still available in some supermarkets but you rarely see it out these days. It is a shame because it's delicious!
Floor_New@reddit
So true, I love treacle tart but on pub/restaurant menus you're far more likely to see sticky toffee pudding as the caramel-y option, much to my dismay
acceberbex@reddit
Or Syrup sponge. My sister loves that and it's always sticky toffee
TheHootOwlofDeath@reddit
Yes, it's sad. I don't dislike sticky toffee pudding but sometimes, I just want a bit of treacle tart.
shannondion@reddit

Not seen a blancmange in decades.
Baked Alaska's not as common as it used to be.
Positive_Ad3450@reddit
I feel intrigued by Baked Alaska. I’ve seen recipes for it but I feel too daunted to have a go. For one I can imagine the ice cream melting everywhere and also I suck at making meringue.
Cheese-n-Opinion@reddit
You're underestimating the impressive insulating properties of meringue!
Positive_Ad3450@reddit
Perhaps you’re right. Maybe one day I’ll make one.
kackers643259@reddit
baked alaska is something i distinctly remember seeing in a recipe book when i was little and thinking "you can put ice cream in the OVEN???" and that it was the coolest thing ever
i have never seen an actual baked alaska in my life
scarletohairy@reddit
And you get set it on fire! Fun dessert!
Cathenry101@reddit
My mum used to just stick sparklers in it, rather than setting it on fire
Gold-Creme-9597@reddit
My mum did this and turned it into a millennium dome for NYE 2000! Hasn’t made it since :(
doalittledance_@reddit
I remember being on holiday once somewhere in Spain as a kid (probably 20odd years ago now) and the Chinese restaurant we were in had deep fried ice cream on the menu. Ofc I had to order it cause how the hell is it possible to deep fry ice cream? My tiny brain was blown 😂 I remember it being really good too!
Lanky-Amphibian1554@reddit
I had one once! It wasn’t really all that memorable. It’s about the concept.
Laneacaia@reddit
I made a wicked chocolate and dark rum blancmange the other day. It's really easy to make.
Cheese-n-Opinion@reddit
That sounds like a taste sensation but what I'm really after is the mysterious 'pink' flavoured one of my youth to really tweak those nostalgia nodes.
Greendeco13@reddit
Pearce Duffs still do the powder, you can get in some supermarkets or from Amazon (very expensive though) it’s a doddle to make
affogatohoe@reddit
This sounds delicious, please can I have the recipe?
Laneacaia@reddit
I just sort of did it by eye. Heat a pint of milk in a pan. Add cornflour a tablespoon at a time until it starts to thicken. Don't le it boil. Add a couple tablespoons of cocoa powder near the end. If it looks too thick once the flour has cooked out add a splash of milk. If it's too runny add a touch more flour. Add a shot of rum once you've taken it off the heat. Don't add too much or it won't set. Pour it into a serving bowl and put it in the fridge to set. Try not to eat it all in one go.
Greendeco13@reddit
You can still get blancmange powder in some supermarkets
assorted_chalks@reddit
God I love an LMP
TheKnightsTippler@reddit
Rum Baba, semolina, and summer pudding.
Slow-Diamond-8725@reddit
I haven’t had a good sticky toffee pudding in years! They are everywhere but just don’t taste the same 😢
Revolutionary_West56@reddit
Trifle
ComeHereUk@reddit
Definitely not out of fashion. Having one today. Do you like yours warm or cold?
Ellavathing@reddit
made a lemon meringue pie just the other day for a family gathering. I fear my family is still living in the 20th century. Thankfully, they no longer ask for spotted dick!
Also regularly make a 3 layered pavlova instead of the now ubiquitous eton mess. I think it is a lovely thing on a summer's day with fresh strawberries or raspberries.
It is all sticky toffee pudding (love it, mind you) brownies and esoteric sauces with ice cream.
whoops53@reddit
Gooseberry pie! God I loved that with ice cream
ComprehensiveAd8815@reddit
In the 90s, It became cheap and it became wet, real lemon vanished and lemony goo replaced it. It was not the same.
Violet351@reddit
A few places locally have lemon meringue pie including the bakery stop owned by a Bakeoff contestant
PresentReindeer9011@reddit
My MIL makes a great lemon meringue pie. I'd say Trifle but I went to a Pub (Vintage Inn) and they had Pimms Strawberry Trifle and it was amazing
Pengetalia@reddit
We have lemon meringue most Christmas' as our pudding 😋
Swamp_Donkey82@reddit
I love lemon meringue pie. Bought one from Tesco the other day, had it with some double cream. Lovely!
Sensitive-Question42@reddit
Lemon meringue pie has always been one of my favourite desserts (along with caramel tarte). They are still readily available and I will eat them whether or not they are in fashion.
Sasspishus@reddit
Yeah I'm not sure what OP means, lemon meringue pie is definitely not out of fashion with me!
catjellycat@reddit
My lemon meringue pie story is that my nan would make them regularly but it wasn’t chocolate and I was a basic child so didn’t touch it. One day, aged 7, I decided everyone else must be onto something so tried the white bit and discovered it was delicious. Had a whole slice - still didn’t touch the lemon, of course. But that white stuff? Couldn’t get enough.
30 minutes later I had the worst headache of my little life. I fell asleep on the sofa and only vaguely remember being put to bed.
Woke up the next morning covered in chicken pox.
Never had a lemon meringue pie since.
MelodicAd2213@reddit
Also love it but whipped eggs can give me awful stomach pains. Last time I had it I was in agony for hours. It was lovely when I was eating it.
Imtryingforheckssake@reddit
How unfortunate. If you can cook you can make meringues with chickpea water aka aqua faba instead.
Ryuga-WagatekiWo@reddit
You can, but it doesn’t mean you should.
Every time I’ve tried making meringue with aquafaba it just tastes wrong and too savoury and it’s a pain in the arse to work with vs eggs. I’d just go for skipping meringue now tbh.
Swamp_Donkey82@reddit
That’s a shame. I sometimes get stomach ache after eating it, I put it down to the acidity of the lemon.
MelodicAd2213@reddit
I’ve had similar issues with omelettes and meringues
Inevitable_Rock_3236@reddit
I can just imagine what those eggy stench farts smelt like 💨🤣
PsychologyValuable75@reddit
Key Lime Pie is my favourite.
Correct-Couple8086@reddit
Fruity puddings generally are harder to find unless you like cheesecake. I was trying to buy a pavlova from tesco online the other day and they didn't have any. They had a nice strawberry and lemon roulade but it was out of stock.
Lods of puddings just seem to be chocolatey now.
Jamie2556@reddit
I noticed that for Easter, I mean surely you don’t want chocolate flavour dessert at Easter, it’s overkill.
dottymouse@reddit
I make lemon meringue pie fairly regularly for customers still!
MJLDat@reddit
Angel Delight? Whatever the hell that was.
PureDeidBrilliant@reddit
*lights joint, sits back*
Take that bottle of Baileys you've got stashed under the sink, Deirdre, and add it to a sachet of butterscotch Angel Delight. Depending on the size of the bottle, you'll either have Dirty Custard for afters or a very pleasing butterscotchy-boozy drink to sip on whilst your children "entertain" you at the next school play.
pintsizedblonde2@reddit
No lie, I was feeling nostalgic and had some the other day.
MJLDat@reddit
Was it the same or have they ruined it with sweeteners?
pintsizedblonde2@reddit
Ot tastes more or less the same as I remember but I suspect it has a fraction of the E numbers it did when I was. Kid.
I tried it when I was at university and it just tasted of chemicals. I couldn't understand how I'd liked it so much as a kid. Tastes like butterscotch again to me these day.
Garden-Rose-8380@reddit
Bonus points for topping it with aerosol whipped cream. My mates mum used to do that when I went there for tea and decades later I still remember.
wildeaboutoscar@reddit
My mum would put chopped bananas at the bottom, then chocolate angel delight then butterscotch angel delight, was heaven.
I would make a jug full of angel delight at uni and eat it that way, not quite as fun but was good when waiting for student loans to come in.
Shame they don't work as well with oat milk
bahumat42@reddit
It's very satisfying to make
Rockky67@reddit
Made some the other day, first time I had it in about 40 years though.
Made the butterscotch one poured over some Jamaica ginger cake and tinned mandarin oranges with walnut pieces on top which was a dessert my mum used to knock up. Didn’t taste as good as it used to, still ok though, but tbf in the intervening time I smoked 40 a day for about 35 years so I’ve no idea what is left of my tastebuds.
KeepOnTrippinOn@reddit
Butterscotch with a flake crumbled up in it is a top tier pudding👌
ambergriswoldo@reddit
Neapolitan Ice Cream with Pistachio flavour included
Imtryingforheckssake@reddit
I've never seen that.
ambergriswoldo@reddit
Traditionally it’s pistachio rather than vanilla - Pizza Express used to do it and it was amazing.
Imtryingforheckssake@reddit
To be fair I've never been in a Pizza Express either!
pajamakitten@reddit
I hear a lot of good things about the Woking one.
BillyJoeDubuluw@reddit
Around about the same time as shepherds pie I believe…
People like these pies but they have forgotten how to make them…
Most of the British classics are only enjoyed by people if they’re shop bought nowadays… I’m not sure that means people don’t enjoy them, but it ultimately makes them less frequent choices.
pajamakitten@reddit
Who has forgotten how to make a shepherd's pie? That is something most Brits will eat on a regular basis.
Lanky-Amphibian1554@reddit
Agreed, commercial lemon meringue pie is just a smear of lemon curd on cardboard with a rock hard spritz of meringue plonked on top.
Even if you don’t make your own pie shell, though, lemon meringue pie is pretty time consuming to make.
Purple_Committee_216@reddit
Ooo i love summer pudding! And make cottage pie (same as shepherd's but beef mince of course) quite a lot. Never hotpot though. I used to love Death by Chocolate in the 80s and 90's.
coffeewalnut08@reddit
I don't really see treacle sponge anymore. Shame, because I liked those.
Yorkshirerose2010@reddit
The school I work in does treacle sponge, jam roly poly, cornflake tart, jam sponge, sticky toffee, etc on a rotation and there is always a crumble of the day. With custard
coffeewalnut08@reddit
But I’m not in school anymore, that’s my problem lol.
pajamakitten@reddit
A reason to become a teacher then.
Prestigious_Elk353@reddit
saw treacle sponge in a pub in suffolk last week
Able_Resident_1291@reddit
Replaced by sticky toffee puddings and chocolate brownies
Sashaflick@reddit
Where’s all the flan gone?
QuiteFrankE@reddit
Key lime pie and Mississippi mud pie.
I also don’t see banofee pie too often either.
pajamakitten@reddit
Yes to all of those. Shame we cannot get proper key limes in the UK though. I had it on holiday in Orlando and it was the nicest dessert I have ever had. I have tried making it here but UK limes are just not good enough.
LittleSadRufus@reddit
Vintage Inns did banoffee pie until recently. My daughter and I ordered it without fail as we love it and don't see it often enough, but still they stopped. M&S do a frozen one but I can't imagine the banana fares well so haven't tried it yet.
We make our own key line pie all the time though. Tesco has an amazing recipe on their website for a chocolate key lime pie that's so easy an 8yo can make it.
My long lost desserts are cousins of Mississippi mud pie: the hot chocolate fudge cake, and the death by chocolate cake.
Chocolaterain567@reddit
I can confirm that the banana slices in M&S banoffee pie do not hold up, they go slimy. Also, it was way too sweet for me.
LittleSadRufus@reddit
Brilliant thank you, shall give it a wide berth!
QuiteFrankE@reddit
Well I will be trying the recipe you recommended! I will also be looking out for the M&S banoffee pie too. It’s worth a try. Thank you!
StinkyBird64@reddit
Banoffee is like my favourite thing next to mint, you never see anything banana and toffee anywhere!
reuben_iv@reddit
Ah yeah I tried key lime pie after watching Dexter it’s one of my favourites now, but realised I’ve never seen it available
QuiteFrankE@reddit
Did you try the perfect key lime pie? That episode sticks in my mind.
christmassnowcookie@reddit
Love a key lime pie 😋
Individual_Bat_378@reddit
I was also going to say banofee pie. I used to work at a boarding school, around ten years ago, where the chef made it every Sunday, I don't think I've had it since.
feetflatontheground@reddit
It's been a while since I've seen a key lime pie. I used to be able to get them from Waitrose or M&S, but it seems they don't have them anymore.
QuiteFrankE@reddit
They used to be everywhere. I hope they become popular again one day.
PurplePlodder1945@reddit
I love it, you can still get it. My sister always made a mean one so I got her to make one at Christmas for me. I’ve always preferred citrus stuff to chocolate
jimmywhereareya@reddit
Pineapple upside down cake. Chelsea buns. Bakewell tart without a half inch of icing and plastic tasting cherries
CourtneyLush@reddit
I suspect every Gen Xer in the UK had to make a pineapple upside down cake in Home Economics. It was an 80s rite of passage.
jimmywhereareya@reddit
The tradition is even older, I left school in 1981, it was definitely a staple in 79 and even earlier
BuckTeethedGirl@reddit
And still going strong - my son brought one home from his Home Ec. class a few weeks ago!
Prestigious_Elk353@reddit
had a bakewell tart like that at a cafe in snettisham, norfolk last month
GreatChaosFudge@reddit
Legendary Chelsea buns still on sale in Cambridge, although I don’t disagree that you might see them less in general. Feels like they’ve been supplanted by cinnamon buns (which to be fair are also great).
Turbofox_89@reddit
I can’t recall a time when it was ever in fashion? Or was that before my time? (I’m 36) Tiramisu is where it’s at anyway.
CarpeCyprinidae@reddit
Definitely a 1980s thing.
Purple_Committee_216@reddit

Probably when Birds Lemon Pie Filling disappeared
Am a big lover of LMP and now make my own, doing the filling by mixing sugar, cornflour, lemon juice, lemon rind, egg yolks, butter and water in a boiling pot
GrumpyOldFart74@reddit
Still love a lemon meringue pie. Age and blood sugar being what it is, I don’t have it regularly anymore, but I have definitely had it this year and probably at least once every 6 months or so.
Now a proper jam roly poly is something I haven’t had in a good few years.
DogtasticLife@reddit
My mum made the best lemon meringue pie, she hasn’t made it in quite some time though, my birthday is coming up …
angelberries@reddit
Can anyone recommend somewhere to get a really good lemon merengue pie btw? Morrisons used to do a lovely mini one with the fresh cakes, but I haven’t seen it in ages.
BabyAlibi@reddit
Banoffee pie
crowort@reddit
My step mum makes this every Xmas.
A couple years ago my brother and I didn’t make it to my dad’s until a few days after Christmas. By then the banoffee pie was done.
Totally ruined Christmas that year. She now makes an extra one if there isn’t going to be enough lol

It can be hard to find apple crumble
TawnyTeaTowel@reddit
Search “apple crumble supermarket” in Google.
Aunt Bessie does one, which is available in multiple supermarkets, and most other others have their own brand apple crumble.
No-Taro-6953@reddit
It's the easiest thing to make.
We have an apple tree in our garden so I go nuts making crumbles and giving it to friends.
Ok_Aioli3897@reddit
Unless you are half blind and have balance problems.
I also don't have the space for things like food processors
No-Taro-6953@reddit
You don't need food processors for apple crumble.
You literally just cut up and stew the apples with sugar, then mix sugar, flour and butter with your hands and stick it in the oven.
It's one of the easiest desserts to make.
Ok_Aioli3897@reddit
Oh yes yet again tell a disabled person who has nearly injured themselves several times with a knife that it's the easiest thing ever.
No-Taro-6953@reddit
Ok fine, don't make apple crumble then.
Your loss.
BuGMoiDroit@reddit
Look in the chilled dessert sections in supermarkets, they always seem to have them there.
Ok_Aioli3897@reddit
They never do.
They might have the small pots but even they tend to be rhubarb nowadays
blondererer@reddit

Ok_Aioli3897@reddit
The Asda is next to the farmfoods and both are a trip away
Purple_Committee_216@reddit
Saw on in Farmfoods recently.
Ok_Aioli3897@reddit
That's where I usually have to end up going but that's quite a trip away and sometimes I just want to be able to pick one up rather than having to plan to get one
BuGMoiDroit@reddit
They're really easy to make as well to be fair,
Ok_Aioli3897@reddit
I just find it easier to buy nowadays
Purple_Committee_216@reddit
If time allows they're not difficult to make. But I know where you're coming from, my nearest supermarkets are 7 miles away. In winter aldi do them I think if that's any nearer for you.

I desperately miss the frozen key lime pie that existed when I was a kid, 1990s sort of time. From memory is was maybe more or a key lime cheesecake, it has a biscuity base and key lime topping without any weird jelly. I was in hospital for a few days and all i remember is being asked what i wanted to eat when i came out and i wanted key lime pie.
Would probably be far too sweet if i had it now but i was so disappointed when they stopped making it.
Eddie_F_17@reddit

Right. The giant one from ciccoloro porepeolo or whatever is always going 'viral'

I'm constantly surprised more people don't find it off-putting, especially after Covid.

Going WAY back, my Mum used to make this dessert which consisted of a purchased flan base, always from Bejams, with tinned mandarins in orange Quick Jel.
I loathed it if I'm honest, I was more interested in the tinned mandarins but NOOO, you couldn't have them because they were for dessert.
The first shop I did when I left home, I bought a tin of mandarins and scarfed them straight from the tin with a fork. Take that Mum.

My wife literally had one for pudding at the pub today? I myself am far more cultured and opted for the treacle pudding and custard.
CrowApprehensive204@reddit
My mum made a lovely lemon meringue. She also made homemade apple pie as big as a dustbin lid. Christmas or birthday trifle was always made with orange jelly and tinned mandarin oranges, thick custard, cream and crumbled flake. Nowadays, I am partial to a mint vienetta, I don't care if it's out of fashion 😋

That’s an American thing - it’s great, but I was into my late 20s before I’d even heard of it
(Unless I was pathetically sheltered and deprived?)
LittleSadRufus@reddit
Pecan pie was big in the late 1980s/ early 1990s, as pecans became more available and it replaced its cousin the more humble treacle tart. Haven't had it since the mid 1990s though.

That means you didn't see When Harry Met Sally for more than 20 years 😭
GrumpyOldFart74@reddit
Well I was 15 when it came out, and probably into at least my late teens before I saw it (if not older)
Even now I don’t particular remember pecan pie being particularly important (though I remember the pie scene, obviously)
It’s one of my favourite films - but if that’s where I did first hear of pecan pie, fair enough. That only reinforces my perception of it being an American thing I didn’t have myself until much later.

I'm not American, I'm English.
Might have been Sarah Lee or something. Pastry, pecans and a bit of white icing swirls on top, like a cinnamon filling type thing... awesome.

Lemon meringue is out of fashion? Where?!
Inevitable-Debt4312@reddit
Lemon meringue MUST have a sugary crispy top, and a tangy not-too-sweet filling. My mum did it best.
SeveralDifficulty745@reddit
My husband favourite, I’ve only made it once. I really don’t like making pastry. Reminds me of my nan, she made the best!
Toastinho@reddit
Oddly, I had a lemon meringue pie yesterday when I went out for lunch. Was delicious.
EmzyLois@reddit
My nana still makes a good old lemon meringue on the regular!
