Anyone loved to Florida or anywhere jn America. What kind of culture shock can a Yorkshire lad expect?
Northern_Lights_2@reddit
You will definitely regret it.
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
Um, I have a condo on the beach overlooking the ocean. It’s that or looking out my window at crap skies and rain.
katnip-evergreen@reddit
That sounds beautiful. I lived in Florida majority of my life and looking forward to moving back
Gunzhard22@reddit
America hates Florida. It was our biggest national embarrassment, but you can thank Trump for taking that title ha.
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
I love Trump 😊 Glad mine there in time to vote for Vance or Rubio whichever one is up.
Gunzhard22@reddit
Ha that says a LOT about you pal. Also not surprised you don't understand that you won't be able to vote at all.
Embarrassed_Key_4539@reddit
Unsurprisingly a resident of Florida 😅
Gunzhard22@reddit
Haha yes
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
I noticed lol.
Northern_Lights_2@reddit
I guess you haven’t experienced summertime, hurricane season or Floridians yet. Some of us love ‘crap skies and rain’
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
I’ve been back and forth for years and love every bit of it and the people.
taurean_jackal@reddit
I don’t even know where to start. You’re going 75 years back in time moving to the US with our infrastructure alone, and to be going to a red state like Florida… you will experience xenophobia to some degree but since you are lighter and from England, it probably won’t be as bad. But Florida is ignorance HQ. Be prepared to repeat yourself a lot. Get some breathable clothes, it’s sticky out there. Best of luck.
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
With all due respect I would only move to a red state.
tracefact@reddit
Oof, well may you have the experience you’re asking for.
taurean_jackal@reddit
Literally lmfaooo you give folks the benefit of the doubt n look… oh well!
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
I’m sure I will 😁🇺🇸
Northern_Lights_2@reddit
Ewwww
FreeFortuna@reddit
Sorry, but there’s some irony in a foreigner only wanting to live among people who are known for disliking foreigners. I assume you’re white and thus assume that you’ll be accepted?
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
Thanks, but I’m not wanting to turn this into a political thing. I’m happy to be moving away from crap weather and looking forward to sitting on balcony watching the sun rise and set over the ocean. I have zero interest in that other stuff.
PadMog75@reddit
You don't want to turn this into a 'political thing', but you'll only move to a Red state? 2 day old account with comments hidden. Dubious username. I think this is a wind-up.
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
That’s was a reply to someone talking about red states, not like I started the subject.
PadMog75@reddit
Where in Yorkshire are you from?
Sad_Firefighter_8407@reddit
Nobody will understand your accent. You will have to modulate many words for them to understand you.
When calling up somewhere like a shop or a restaurant on the phone you are better off just pretending to be American.
Quarter Water Straw Corner
These simple words are absolutely and completely baffling to the American ear when spoken out of an English mouth.
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
I’m not moving to Afghanistan lol
Kiwiatx@reddit
That’s what you think. No one’s going to be able to understand you. You will learn to change your pronunciation so that you don’t have to repeat yourself.
Username checks out.
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
I’ve been back and forth many times and no one has ever had an issue understanding me, especially the ladies 😉
Kiwiatx@reddit
Username checks out again
sread2018@reddit
On purpose!?
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
Um, I have a condo on the beach overlooking the ocean. It’s that or looking out my window at crap skies and rain.
sread2018@reddit
So do I but its not in that cesspool
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
Yeah, but you have to live Australia 😂
sread2018@reddit
Im not in Australia. At least your reading and comprehension is at the same level of your new residence citizens
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
lol, ok little man. Have fun wherever you may be.
Late_Geologist_235@reddit
Why?
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
Um, I have a condo on the beach overlooking the ocean. It’s that or looking out my window at crap skies and rain.
Gunzhard22@reddit
Dear lord why? Florida is where all of our dumbest congregate, also where every chain restaurant in existence has gone to die but still persists.
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
I’ve enjoyed everyone I’ve met in Florida. I went to LA and NY and people were awful for the most part.
Extension_Canary3717@reddit
My condolences
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
Um, I have a condo on the beach overlooking the ocean. It’s that or looking out my window at crap skies and rain. I think I’ll manage 😊
Kiwiatx@reddit
For the love of God do NOT underestimate the sun in Florida like every other English tourist.
Wear sunscreen year round including the backs of your neck and hands. You will still tan. Hopefully you won’t just look permanently beet red and give yourself skin cancer.
MaxInIrving@reddit
Alligators, snakes, and the weather. If you can navigate those three you'll be fine, and have some good stories to tell your friends in the UK.
PaleIncome8254@reddit
You’ll love it. The beach in destin/pensacola is awesome, weathers great and beats the UK! Just bring some of your favourites from home, marmite, bisto, HP, any chocolate and specific tea bags! Coffee out here is great though so you might switch from tea! Enjoy!
lluluna@reddit
Depending on which part of Florida. South Florida, like Coral Gables and Palm Beach, is aweeeesome!
humble-meercat@reddit
Moving to Destin right before summer?!! Get ready for some absolutely BRUTAL heat and humidity…
Also I hope you love fishing…
My mum is from London (grandma from Stockton on Tees) and lives in the US now. She likes how friendly people are here.
Everything is just SO different, especially Florida…
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
It will be the thought, but I’ll make it work 😁
humble-meercat@reddit
Oh you might absolutely LOVE it once you get over the heat. I grew up going to Florida and there are some stunning beaches and cute towns. Stuff in the panhandle is cheap, and it’s sort of a lazy slow pace of life there. It’s nice if you’re into what all is down there, the main thing is summer will be shockingly hot for you.
Get some cooling bandanas for your neck, get a good sun hat and WEAR SUNSCREEN or you will absolutely fry. And don’t forget that the reflection from the water can burn you as well if you’re exposed long enough.
prettyprincess91@reddit
I’m sorry
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
I’m not. 😎
CanPacific@reddit
Ouch, downgrade

Not super familiar with Yorkshire but I have family I visit often in Florida. The politics down there are ROUGH. The nature is beautiful, though. If you like really hot weather, Sun, reptiles/ amphibians, and humidity, you’ll be quite happy with the weather. There are cute little lizards everywhere so be careful where you step :) There’s also a surprising large amount of horses.
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
I stay away from politics to be honest. I’m definitely not left so maybe it’s not a bad place for me 😂
Sarchimus@reddit
Floridian here, and my mother’s side of the family were from Bristol, Avonmouth, and Somerset area.
I think you’ll be fine, particularly if you settle in one of the larger metro areas (Orlando, Tampa, Broward County etc.). Most urban Floridians will be mildly amused by the accent. If you live in the “countryside” (such as it is here…) you’ll do ok since you speak English… I assume you’re white… rural Florida is, sadly, deeply MAGA and xenophobic toward Hispanics, shameful but true…
inga-babi@reddit
Orlando or South Florida will have way more expats than Destin. Destin is beautiful but you’ll stick out like a sore thumb and no one will be able to understand you (nor you them for that matter). Also, wear sunscreen and reapply several times during the day.
FreeFortuna@reddit
Where in Florida? That can make a difference.
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
Destin.
Conscious-Tutor3861@reddit
Generally speaking, the Panhandle is poor; the people are unhealthy, uneducated, and hyper-religious; and the public infrastructure is poorly maintained or non-existent.
That said, Destin is a tourist destination for rednecks, so it's better off than most of the rest of the Panhandle.
FreeFortuna@reddit
Thanks. I think that’s the Panhandle area, which can be pretty culturally similar to neighboring states like Alabama and Georgia.
But IIRC, Destin is more like a beach town. So hopefully it’ll be pretty laidback and pleasant.
Active_Conclusion341@reddit
God Bless You

Florida is a combination of the dumbest parts and the most extravagant parts of America, both inhabitants and tourists. You'll probably have an absolute amazing time in the short term depending on your circumstances (single).
It'll be a hell of an experience and that's what life is, isn't it?
BlushHeat@reddit
Get ready for a serious sunburn and people calling the soda "pop"you might need to work on your "y'all" game too.
Awkward-Seaweed-5129@reddit
Florida ,you pastey white bloke, you are coming at most brutal heat of the year, stay out of Sun. Florida is huge State, depends which area ,further South you travel ,the more " north" you are, good luck
DickWankerMan@reddit (OP)
Destin.
Conscious-Tutor3861@reddit
Enjoy the meth.
snortWeezlbum@reddit
Oof
IvoTailefer@reddit
dont embrace the sun. treat it as your worst enemy. because it is.
kejiangmin@reddit
Be prepared for humidity and heat. Going from cloudy to mostly sunny, wear sunscreen
better_days_92@reddit
I'm sorry for your loss.
Embarrassed_Key_4539@reddit
Holy Jesus Christ, that’s going to be a big change. Best of luck to you.
