There’s something about the retro China Airlines livery on a 747 that just looks so right

I feel like 747 just looks great in any retro livery except for united maybe.

Better not be talking about Saul Bass.

Man that early Saul Bass title size looked absolutely tiny on the 747. Luckily they made it bigger later on

Saul Bass
Friendship
Pre-Merger Blue
Post-Merger
Battleship Gray
I hate battleship gray with such a passion

Battleship gray sucks. I prefer the pre-merger blue over that

Cheatlines are always right.

As retro as it gets

Totally 90s. Pinstriping but to a larger degree.

B-161 was actually one of the four 747-400s that ended up being converted into Dreamlifters; It's currently registered as N249BA. I actually didn't even know that CAL flew their 747-400s in the retro livery. I thought they all began service in the modern plum blossom one.
Speaking of the plum blossom livery, they even had A300s and 747-200s flying around in that livery at some point. It's stood the test of time pretty damn well in my opinion. Love both liveries honestly.

The Plum blossom is a timeless livery, hard to believe it's nearly 30 years old already.

Love that black paint under the windshield, Air China's 737 Max still has those too!

Yes it does. But just remember, China Airlines (Taiwan) =/= Air China (China).

There's just enough attention to detail to make it a stylish and classy paintjob and not just 'wowee you put stripes on a plane, good job, no one ever did that before.' It is the small things that set good livery design apart from the rest. I particularly like the body stripes tapering at nose and tail, bending with the fuselage.
And, of course, it's a 747. If you want your retro livery to really feel iconic and you have any in your fleet why would you put it on something else? Even if not the plane most associated with your brand, it will get attention and feel all the more nostalgic.
Wish more liveries captured all this.

Ooh yes. That’s pretty.
