What controller did you start with? Mine was number 4 then 6 and 7! (Answer better be 1-5!)

They leave it the Odyssey 2 as well.
This was my first video game system (as a hand me.down). Didn't manage to get a 2600 till I was an adult.
shaithiswampir@reddit
That’s the only one we didn’t have growing up. A shame really

Pick Axe Pete FTW
BigDog_3770@reddit
K.C. Munchkin used to let you design your own maze. I figured out quickly how to trap the ghosts and run through the maze without being chased. Lower game scores but could play forever
foxtongue@reddit
Same! Ours came from a garage sale, I think?
slash_networkboy@reddit
KC Munchkin? Legendary game, got them sued though. Pack Man with a level editor, even way back then, just no way to save it.
SolAggressive@reddit
We had the Colecovision with the plug-in in the front the okay Atari games!
MainlineX@reddit
The whole story of Colecovision is wild.
khari_lester@reddit
The transition from leather goods to making video game consoles seems pretty natural.
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
I had the above, but ours also came with two identical hybrid controllers that had the dial, a little joystick like the atari and a side button.
Solarmage77@reddit
ColecoVision for the win!
ForceGhost47@reddit
Too rich for my blood
bigsampsonite@reddit
Same that shit was for ballers. I remember I thought we were rich because we got an Atari 2600. Then I seen buddy got colecovision and had pitfall.
rotorocker@reddit
Intellivision was first!
jamesdcreviston@reddit
My dad had one that played to it was my second after Atari.
strangebru@reddit
They also leave out the old PONG home game knobs too.

"Mattel electronics presents; (thick southern accent) B17 Bomber"
jibby13531@reddit
I remember the guy saying B 17 Bomber. We played Horse Racing and Frogger too. I know w there were some others, but those stand out. My uncle had it before we got an Atari. But we always would play it when we went to his house. Definitely the first gaming system I ever played.
Blackbird136@reddit
Beeee seeeventeen boooooooooomber. Lol.
Hellament@reddit
Same. The game I remember playing the most was Triple Action, because it could be played with friends. Also, Space Armada and Star Strike.
A few years back I actually bought one of those Intellivision Flashback consoles with all the built in games. Had fun playing it again with my adult siblings.
Thecalin33@reddit
I quickly managed to outplay my parents on the racing, and won more than I lost on the biplanes. Those were because I had faster fingers and more time to practice. But my father used to kick my butt on the darn tank game because my undeveloped brain couldn't understand the angles he'd find. While I'd immediately start off driving somewhere he'd just park and snipe me. When I finally got old enough (5 or 6) to beat him he gave up on video games and decided I needed to learn chess lol.
kookyz@reddit
I still contend that Burgertime on the Intellivision was by far the best version. I've tried playing it on different consoles and even the arcade and nothing can match the ability to navigate those ladders like that circle pad.
Blackbird136@reddit
I agree. I got so good at walking over just half of the top bun, letting the food guys (I remember an egg) get on it, and send them flying all the way down.
I’ll admit I’ve never been much of a gamer, the Intellivision had actually belonged to my dad and I was handed it down in the mid-90s, but Burgertime may be my favorite game ever on any console. So simple yet so satisfying.

Thecalin33@reddit
I must have sunk hundreds of hours into that game before I ever hit first grade. I thought at the time I was really good at it. I realize now I was pretty good landing on the right pixels... But I had no idea what the actual purpose of that game was. I never did beat it. My goal was always just play as long as I could and survive.

splatgoestheblobfish@reddit
My uncles used to play that at family gatherings when my cousin and I were itty-bitties, before the rest of the group was born. It scared us so bad! There is a picture somewhere of the two of us frantically burrowing into the couch cushions to hide. For several years, I was absolutely terrified that a dragon or a demon would be hiding in a dark place and would get me. I still remember the sounds...

trainwreckhappening@reddit
That was the only one that popped up when I hit colecovosion.
We had DK and a whole collection. What fascinated me was that about a third of the games we had were made by Nintendo. I remember being blown away when I noticed the Nintendo logo on the game cartridges. This was long after getting the original NES. No idea on the history.
Lucky_Louch@reddit
I know right, it was such a strange mix of nintendo, atari and then colecovision games. They even had an adapter that plugged into the colecovision allowing you to play atari games but I think it wasn't authorized by atari and they had to discontinue it.
militant-hippie@reddit

LeModderD@reddit
Sega Master System controller (not shown here). For whatever reason our family was part of that small percentage that went with the master system over NES. I think we were sold on it “being better” or “better graphics”. It was fun and I certainly enjoyed it but it always felt like we had the weird system. And with NES having broader catalog with ability to borrow from friends (and discuss playing the same games) that would have been the better choice in hindsight.
On the plus side, I never had to blow on finicky game cartridges like I remember needing to do at my friends with NES.

Same here. Didn’t know there would be such a gap between NES and Sega. There was one other kid in my school with a master system and we traded games.

bananabastard@reddit
Master System was good. I was Sega all the way. The N64 was the first Nintendo I owned.
I went Atari > Master System > Genesis > PlayStation > N64 > PlayStation 2 > Xbox 360 > Finished.
There was a Commodore 64 in there too, between Atari and Master System. Not really a console, though.
elenchusis@reddit
I was, apparently, today years old when I learned that Sega Genesis is not the same as Sega Master System? I never had Sega anything, and the only person I knew who had a Genesis was the rich kid who had both that AND Nintendo. They even had the Sega CD bit, which I thought, at the time, technology would never surpass.

I LOVED my NES Max! Joystick controller and turbo buttons! Hated going back to the original ones.
driftwoodlk@reddit
NES Advantage (rightmost) was the huge slab with the joystick. Max (to the left of the Advantage) had the directional pad but still the turbo buttons.
I feel strongly about this because I got the Advantage and hated it, but got the Max and loved it.

They're not always great people (actually, "rarely" is probably a better substitute for "not always") but I gotta give Sorny props for mastering controller ergonomics and utility on their first kick at the can. 1, It was my sister's Atari but we both played it.
Eventually 2 was given to me for Christmas one year. It was the “Power Set” with the Power Pad and Duck Hunt. I still have no idea how my parents pulled that off. It was pretty much all I got that year, and I was absolutely thrilled. Later on, Tetris and The Legend of Zelda became my favorites. I was also enough of a nerd that I hand-drew all the levels of A Boy and His Blob in colored pencil on notebook paper, then taped them together into one giant map so I could remember all the tunnel structures and where everything was. I remember spreading that thing out across my bedroom floor—it was friggin’ huge. And going to the local video store to rent games as a reward for a good report card? That was the best.
Honestly, I never outgrew it. Tetris is still my comfort game. Perimenopause, middle-of-the-night stupid wake-up, can’t sleep… Tetris. Somehow my brain settles, and I can drift right back off.

1, but only just. Pretty sure my parents got the Atari before me. We had a weirdly large amount of games for it. My dad didn’t play it. My mom only played space invaders. My elder half-siblings played it every now and again.
I think they may have gotten it at the swap meet or something. I don’t think it was new. My dad made a custom transformer to power it. We also had a random assortment of different controllers and a storage case.
—
Christmas of ‘84 we got a Sega Master System, which was specifically for me. Honestly, I don’t remember playing it much until I was a bit older. I would have had to ask for time on the family TV, which probably limited its availability at first.
My grandma got me a NES somewhere around ‘87 I think (for her house). We used to rent games from Blockbuster.
By ‘89, my parents were divorced and my mom decided that video games “kept me out of trouble.” I got a lot more into them and had more games and different consoles around that time.

Without making me go to “the Xbox room” which is what my son and I call his game room (btw he hasn’t touch that Xbox in years lol, and there is also an old Wii and my old Nintendo in there) is there a different version of the #2 controller or am I crazy? Maybe a turbo or something! I have the same one posted, but I feel like I also have it with a curved handle, but looks mostly the same? And now I’m itching to play! Gonna have to bust out my game genie codes though because I have zero patience lol.

this was my first (atari 5200):
along with the game river raid, I'm guessing around Christmas 1983. however the controller kept breaking, so we eventually returned it. I thought we got a 7800 instead at that point (can't add 2nd image to show that controller....) but apparently it didn't become widely available until mid '86. I don't know recall that long of a gap between owning these 2 systems... but I did also acquire a massive garbage bag full of 2600 games which were backwards compatible.
I definitely wasn't the first kid on my block to own the NES, I don't think we got one until some time in '87. I know I did get Zelda and Tyson's punch out right around when they came out that year.

1 started it for me. My uncle had one and whenever we’d visit I’d play Defender and Space Invaders for as long as I could.

Im not much of a system gamer... My first I ever played with is #2 and it wasnt mine, it was my friends that Id play games with. So my actual first one I owned, and still own was #17. My first ever controller wasnt on a system, it connected to the computer? or was it the TV? I cant totally remember...I was like 10-12 somewhere around there. Im still a PC keyboard / mouse gamer.

Of ones I have actually owned, 6 and then 14. In order from what I’ve played on, 2, then 1, then 4, then 6, 9, and 14.
Also, whatever the remote was from the Compact Disc Interactive system my dad gave my brother.

Neighbors had #1, which was the first I played; I won #2 when I was like 8 so that's the first I owned.

I played a lot with #1, but we also had the pong controllers that were like a dial that just went back and forth.

I played with 1, but 2 was when I had one in my home. I've held all but 15 and 20.

Technically it was some sort of pong only devise my parents had, but I'd say my first real gaming venture started with the NES.
devpuppy@reddit
2 and just straight down from there
Lucky_Louch@reddit
ColecoVision in between 1 and 2 early/mid 80's. It was a very strange controller with two trigger buttons on each side a joystick and a full number pad. different games and overlays to different inputs you would put over the number pad but I never had any it was usually just trial and error. Still have my system and games but the connector is so old its literally 2 wires that wrap around connectors on the back of the old TV's.
Vargen_HK@reddit
I started on a paddle controller my dad hacked together from a light dimmer and some random button. I used it to play a Space Invaders knockoff on his Color Computer.

Played 1 first. Then owned the Atari 7800 (not pictured). Then #2, #3, #5, which is probably supposed to be a Sega Saturn controller but whoever made this couldn't tell the difference between a Saturn and Genesis 6 button.

I didn’t own a NES myself, but used to regularly use my friend’s console when I was at her house, so number 2. I actually used and/or owned every console in the second column, with the only deviation from column 2 being number 15.
Funny story about how my now-husband ended up with a Game Cube; he was hanging around the shopping centre near where I was working at the time waiting for me to finish work. He went into EB Games (I think it’s the Aussie version of Game Stop) and saw a Star Wars game that he liked the look of. So he bought it. Then the sales assistant asked him if he had a Game Cube. My husband was like “Uh, no”. The dude was all “You need a Game Cube to play this game”. So he bought a Game Cube.
He literally only ever bought one game for it. I later bought a second game, which was the sequel of the first game. We still have the Game Cube and a whole two games for it sitting around our home somewhere.
