What controller did you start with? Mine was number 4 then 6 and 7! (Answer better be 1-5!)

Always looked forward to #1 when visiting my uncle. #2 was the first I owned at home.
Fancy_Depth_4995@reddit
Played #1. First one I owned was #2
--Citation-Needed--@reddit
Same. Also spent waaaaay more time with 2 than any other.

Still have my NES and play it with my teens!
Gutter_Snoop@reddit
The permanent callouses on the inside of both index fingers is really testament to that
Lauuson@reddit
I can still remember the pain in my thumb lasting for days after staying up all night to beat 1P Contra for the first time. Yes, I had to use the code.
driftwoodlk@reddit
Until you got a NES Max? Turbo buttons!
johnvalley86@reddit
Whoa look at money bags over here with their fancy joystick. Just throwing shade because I wanted one of those things so bad as a kid
driftwoodlk@reddit
omg that was NES Advantage! NES Max was much more reasonably priced.
Yarn_Addict_3381@reddit
I LOVED my NES Max! Joystick controller and turbo buttons! Hated going back to the original ones.
driftwoodlk@reddit
NES Advantage (rightmost) was the huge slab with the joystick. Max (to the left of the Advantage) had the directional pad but still the turbo buttons.
I feel strongly about this because I got the Advantage and hated it, but got the Max and loved it.
Fancy_Depth_4995@reddit
Where’s the Power Glove?
safetyCircuit@reddit
It's so bad.
oskich@reddit
I had that 4-player adapter which also added turbo buttons for the normal controllers.

trainwreckhappening@reddit
That was the only one that popped up when I hit colecovosion.
We had DK and a whole collection. What fascinated me was that about a third of the games we had were made by Nintendo. I remember being blown away when I noticed the Nintendo logo on the game cartridges. This was long after getting the original NES. No idea on the history.
Lucky_Louch@reddit
I know right, it was such a strange mix of nintendo, atari and then colecovision games. They even had an adapter that plugged into the colecovision allowing you to play atari games but I think it wasn't authorized by atari and they had to discontinue it.
Darkest_Rahl@reddit
My uncle had one. We played Xaxxon and Zipper quite a bit. Though Xaxxon was impossible.
I never see this in these lists.
CrowWarrior@reddit
Zaxxon was my favorite. One Saturday, post cartoons, I managed to flip the score on that game. I loved Qbert too.

well_shit_oh_no@reddit
Was the cabbage patch kids one where you could paint and decorate your house? I was obsessed
Lucky_Louch@reddit
That was one of them, the cabbage patch adventures was a side scroller kind of like pit fall but you were cabbage patch kids. swinging on vines, jumping on lily pads and avoiding bouncing bowling balls. It was hard! I did have Cabbage patch kids paint and Smurf Paint which were like you described.

Sega Master System controller (not shown here). For whatever reason our family was part of that small percentage that went with the master system over NES. I think we were sold on it “being better” or “better graphics”. It was fun and I certainly enjoyed it but it always felt like we had the weird system. And with NES having broader catalog with ability to borrow from friends (and discuss playing the same games) that would have been the better choice in hindsight.
On the plus side, I never had to blow on finicky game cartridges like I remember needing to do at my friends with NES.
Amanuet@reddit
I had the one with the built in Alex Kidd game included.
You'd put in a game cartridge which wouldn't register and goddamn Alex Kidd would show up. Take out, blow, reinsert... Alex Kidd again!
I played a lot of Alex Kidd.
artfully_dejected@reddit (OP)
See, I just assumed all the Sega controllers were included, because I (almost) never played the Sega systems…
basiden@reddit

this was my first (atari 5200):
along with the game river raid, I'm guessing around Christmas 1983. however the controller kept breaking, so we eventually returned it. I thought we got a 7800 instead at that point (can't add 2nd image to show that controller....) but apparently it didn't become widely available until mid '86. I don't know recall that long of a gap between owning these 2 systems... but I did also acquire a massive garbage bag full of 2600 games which were backwards compatible.
I definitely wasn't the first kid on my block to own the NES, I don't think we got one until some time in '87. I know I did get Zelda and Tyson's punch out right around when they came out that year.

I didn’t own a NES myself, but used to regularly use my friend’s console when I was at her house, so number 2. I actually used and/or owned every console in the second column, with the only deviation from column 2 being number 15.
Funny story about how my now-husband ended up with a Game Cube; he was hanging around the shopping centre near where I was working at the time waiting for me to finish work. He went into EB Games (I think it’s the Aussie version of Game Stop) and saw a Star Wars game that he liked the look of. So he bought it. Then the sales assistant asked him if he had a Game Cube. My husband was like “Uh, no”. The dude was all “You need a Game Cube to play this game”. So he bought a Game Cube.
He literally only ever bought one game for it. I later bought a second game, which was the sequel of the first game. We still have the Game Cube and a whole two games for it sitting around our home somewhere.
