It might be to do with proportions i.e. does it look like it's a "skinny" or "fat" car
CrossCityLine@reddit
R reg Peugeot 106.
Weirdly tiny accelerator pedal, went through oil and clutch cables like nobody’s business, set itself on fire from the electrics in the steering column, crashed it and ended up with a mismatched bonnet.
Fucking great car.
turtleship_2006@reddit
I have an auto 2012 207 and I find the opposite problem with the accelerator/brake - they're bloody massive and very far to the left! I had to move my entire foot to switch between them for the first two weeks and even now I have to move it quite a bit (compared to the Toyota's my instructor and dad have)
ceehred@reddit
Yeah, 106's were great. And I remember the initial helplessness of snapping a clutch cable. Thankfully I had a passenger prepared to push us going and run round and jump in while I smashed on the gears to get us home.
Electrical issues were a recurring pain, but the final straw was the rear suspension. With it being way over 10 years old, I donated it to the local tech college - where the students on their car mechanic course fixed and tricked it up. Made me smile the one time I saw it on the road in town again.
CrossCityLine@reddit
I ended up carrying around a supply of clutch cables in the boot and got rather efficient at changing them at the roadside as well as being able to drive it without using the clutch pedal (a habit I still get into sometimes in my far more modern car 😂).
My exhaust also fell off a few times.
ceehred@reddit
Lol, me too on the exhausts. I remember scaring the nearby pedestrians with my noise and then the dropped back-box clipping and lifting the rear of the car in the air as I tried to get over a dropped-kerb.
My main memory was with the electrics - like it wouldn't start for 20 minutes after stopping. A bit of a pain at the petrol station. There were times I had to key-it down the road before it would get going, in a comedy bunny-hop.
Lots of other dumb issues, like the fuel intake coming apart after I refuelled, indicators getting stuck on, and more than one case of sensor failures causing overheating. Thankfully, I have two brothers who are mechanics who helped me through it all, but eventually one of their GF's said to my wife "it's lovely to see you here on the weekends [often to get the car fixed] but we'd like you to buy a newer car" :-D
CrossCityLine@reddit
Another one I just remembered!
Sometimes the key would get stuck in the ignition and the only way to get it out was to aim a chisel at a very particular spot on the key barrel (after you’ve ripped the plastic housing off) and hit it quite hard with a hammer whilst somebody else simultaneously turned and pulls on the key.
An endless list of problems but I genuinely loved that car and it taught me a lot about car mechanics and ownership.

My second car was a Peugeot 107, and I looked like Mr Incredible whee was stuck in a traffic jam, crammed into a car far too small 😅

A P-plate (1975) Austin Maxi 1500 in baby-shit brown:
(Not my car, mine was about 60% rust...)
It burnt approximately a pint of oil per tank of petrol and did about 20mpg.
Gearbox worn so badly I had to learn how to double-declutch to change down gears. Or coast to a stop in neutral then madly jam the fucking thing into what I hoped was first gear.
The window washer was a button in the dash that you had to pump to get a trickle of water to come out.
The radio only picked up MW and LW.
The seats were pleather. Fucking freezing in the winter and would burn your legs in the summer.
No power steering, no electric windows, it barely had seatbelts.
Famously high quality Lucas electrics.
Brakes were interesting. They worked but sometimes they'd just refuse to release again for 30 minutes or so. I had the entire brake system swapped and it still kept doing it. I'm pretty sure it was haunted.
Could mange 80mph if you were feeling suicidal.
Things would randomly fall off. I lost: The spare wheel, the rear bumper, 3 of 4 lug nuts on one of the front wheels, a wing mirror and on one particularly memorable night-time drive down the A1, all the lights stopped working.
While the front and back seats folded down flush, making a double bed (if you ignored 2-foot-long gear stick), finding someone of the opposite sex to share it with me was difficult because I was driving a baby-shit brown Austin Maxi.
