Are they reliable cars?
Galopigos@reddit
Tell him he really wants a 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8... 425 hp Hemi in a RWD station wagon.... The 300 nose is an easy bolt on with that car
RatePretty5950@reddit
Is he a drug dealer or 90 year old man? Or both?
TheNeech@reddit
Can confirm: dying grandfather only liked the 300C towards the end and I completely get it…
It’s an incredible looking sedan for the American market and I would own one (mostly because of the ancient E-Class base) if it could be just a little more reliable.
B777X_787-9@reddit
With the 5.7 yes only the 5.7 but get a Toyota
Advanced_Link_5753@reddit
‘90’s man… 😂
kamikaziboarder@reddit
You beat me to it. I automatically assume a drug dealer, but not a good one at that. Some low street hustler who thinks they are a big shot, but will be throw in front of a bus in a split second.
MTB_SF@reddit
I think of an unsuccessful version of James Franco's character in Spring Breakers.
Which is exactly how I would describe my friend who drove one.
Scazitar@reddit
Like 10-15 years ago I knew an actual drug dealer that had one with tinted windows and a big ass radar detector.
I'd always ask him are you like trying to be so suspicious that you aren't suspicious lol.
sprchrgddc5@reddit
My old co-worker had one and he was the “White guy thinks he’s Heath Ledger’s Joker” type and you know I feel like he might have been a drug dealer too.
CitronTraining2114@reddit
That's funny. The one guy I knew with one was a white guy who cranked the rap and had the 1000-watt car stereo. He'd come to work in basketball shorts and jersey. Strange dude.

lol I bought a 300c as a short term replacement for my Cadillac cts when it started showing signs of electrical problems after owning it 10 years.
The 300c was a fun, comfortable and good looking car. I was able to get it pretty cheap and sell it two years later for more than I bought it for due to Covid.

The 5.7’s were cool and fairly reliable… head gaskets can be an issue…
Own_Ambition_2631@reddit
Piece of junk. Anything from Chrysler corp is complete garbage. There's a reason you see Toyotas and hondas priced the same as Chryslers, and Dodges with half as many miles. Plus the 300 is a car people enjoy showing off in so it's already been abused. Guaranteed
GlobalTapeHead@reddit
I had one as a company car. I really liked it. It never had any issues. My daily driver is a Charger with the much hated Pentastar 3.6, basically a Dodge version of the 300, It’s one of the most reliable cars I’ve ever owned.
Majsharan@reddit
Pentastar is fine it’s just not quite enough engine for a full size car.
BigPapaJava@reddit
The 3.6 makes nearly 300 hp, which is plenty for a typical full size car.
Unfortunately, the 300s and Chargers are very heavy by full size standards at almost 4500lbs.
BisexualCaveman@reddit
No, that's about full-sized RWD weight.
If you compare with the old Caprice Classic and Ford Crown Victoria they were both over 4,000 by the end of their runs.
dragonstar982@reddit
And their v8s had less horsepower than the pentastar.
Secure_Public6076@reddit
Torque is what moves those boats around. Power at lower rpm is more drivable than having to hit redline to merge on the highway
dragonstar982@reddit
And the 6 cyl pentastar (260-275 lb ft) is in the same range as the crown vic v8 (265 - 295 lb ft)
Hell my 4cyl 2021 ranger has as much torque as those old v8s and 3k and is no where near redline, peak hp (270 ish) is comparable at only 5k with the curb weight in similar range (around 4100 lbs).
Modern drive trains can simply do more with less.
Majsharan@reddit
Maybe but do want you current day car having the same numbers as a car developed a dexx cc are before it? Panther platforms were not known for speed
dragonstar982@reddit
Same base numbers out of a smaller package different transmissions (example my 10 speed vs the 4-5 speeds) way different MPG (25ish spirited city driving vs 12 to 14ish average) sure I'll take it any day.
The original point wasn't is it a hotrod it was disproving the incorrect assumption that the pentastar couldn't perform as well as the old v8s in a vehicle with comparable weight. It does and gets better mpg while doing it.
BisexualCaveman@reddit
Yup.
The Crown Vic in Interceptor format delivered 250 HP and less than that prior to the last couple of years and the fast version of the Caprice Classic made 260 HP.
itchybiscut9273@reddit
They have been known to eat cam shafts, typically due to clogged lifters from people running too long between oil changes
Dreamcastin8@reddit
I disagree, I had a 2013 and it had plenty of power.
gambit57@reddit
Did you use the trunk a lot? I had one as a rental and thought the trunk was a lot smaller than a car that size should have. But I didn’t have it all that long.
GlobalTapeHead@reddit
I don’t think the trunk is that bad, personally. When I need to haul stuff I use my Tahoe however .
RoosterMedical@reddit
I was watching an Australian cop show and the 300 was considered by the people to be a luxury vehicle.
mortalcrawad66@reddit
The 3.6L V6 is a very reliable engine, that gets great fuel economy. The 5.7L V8 is a mixed bag.
Besides that, they're decent and reliable cars.
hoodedrobin1@reddit
The 5.7 hemi is a mixed bag compared to the 3.6. Please explain. I’d love to hear this
mortalcrawad66@reddit
The main issue is reliability. Mainly the lifters, and the infamous "Hemi Tick"; but you have other issues like PCV and oiling issues.
It's also not the most fuel efficient engine ever. You are getting a 360hp V8, so. . .
hoodedrobin1@reddit
And you think that the hemi is less reliable than a 3.6 engine that has an oil filter housing made of plastic, and misfires with catalytic converts inches from the head resulting in ingested catalytic converter material.
Your lifter and cam failures were addressed before 2014 for the most part. Keep your oil changed you’ll be fine. Now exhaust bolts causing a cold start up tick that’s common.
I wouldn’t let someone I know buy a 3.6 with over 90,000 miles. And if they have a misfire on the 3.6 and they ignore it you’ll need an engine rebuilt in quick order.
mortalcrawad66@reddit
The oil filter housing isn't an issue, if you don't over heat it, and you know how to thread things. As for catalytic converter issue, I have never heard of that. Especially given I've had family members put ~200,000 miles on the Pentastar.
Also no, the issues still exist. They haven't touched the engine. It's a reason why people worry about their 2025 1500 ticking, because the hemi hasn't changed in nearly twenty years.

o0Spoonman0o@reddit
2017-2023 are going to be the most reliable years. Both engines options are reasonable, Hemi does have potential to develop a tick but many also see 200 000+ miles.
They're honestly not a bad car assuming you find one that's in good shape.
FLG_CFC@reddit
Frequently changing the oil is important with the 5.7 hemi. A stage one cam upgrade with an MDS delete is the best way to keep the cam from getting eaten, though.
The 3.6 pentastar is a very good engine, but down on power compared to the 5.7. Having owned both in multiple vehicles, I'd rather have the 5.7 any day.
Jeragon186@reddit

FLG_CFC@reddit
Yes. Apparently, there doesn't seem to be as many issues with the MDS systems on the 6.4, but having lost an engine to it at 120k miles, I personally wouldn't risk it.

Dont care if i get downvoted but if its a 2017+ Yes. The ZF8 is one of the best transmissions ever made and the 3.6 is reliable with proper maintenance. Its a chrysler so dont expect stellar build quality in terms of the interior but if you want a good looking car for a relatively cheap price a 300 is not a bad place to start.

Look, I personally really like them for some reason. I see a last edition in that super nice velvet red color every time I pass by a specific cafe whenever I’m not working from home. Yeah I’m brown, no my credit isn’t bad, yes I make bed decisions with cars. Reliability is that you get out what you put into it. Most guys I know who own one never put in the actual maintenance required, and there are definitely better cars to own reliability-wise, but I think they look great, the V8 sounds really nice, and if you can find one that wasn’t beat on, they’re nice. That is my personal opinion. My personal opinion is not an objective fact though.

The thing with most Chrysler products is that they would be great from almost any other brand. German engineering couldn't fix their reliability, and the brand eventually passed on to one of the most famously unreliable brands in the world to save them. I had a coworker that was routinely driving his Northstar Cadillac to work, because it was more reliable than his 10+yr newer 300.
