White Rim Trail and fuel

My wife and I are doing our first camping trip on the White Rim Trail. We will do the full loop in and out. I drive an F250 6.7 diesel.
If I fill up at Moab before going in, how much extra fuel would you suggest carrying? Are jerry cans the easiest way to carry fuel?
Thanks.

Fuel in moab is more expensive in general, but most of those trails are short.
Jerry cans are around $60 each. Look up Truck aux fuel tank for $150-$200. Love mine

100 miles is rarely an issue with most vehicles. It's when the road gets closed for myriad unexpected reasons that you plan for. If you get all the way (clockwise) to the Green and then have to backtrack, it turns it into 160+ miles.

In my 26 gallon Tundra, I use 3/4 of a 26 gallon tank on the White Rim. Done it a few times.
Only reason to carry fuel is if you were to get turned back for some reason- check the weather for risk of flash flood closing part of the loop. I assume you’ve got a much bigger tank in that truck than mine I suspect you could do it twice with no issues.

5.2mpg is rough!!! I got 7.xx as a support vehicle to 7 people on bikes so lots of idling /waiting on every climb.

It’s closer to 200 miles RT to the gas station. We’ve always got tons of stuff on the Tundra running support on The White Rim. My average off-road is ~10mpg for mixed wheeling.

Bring a tank. You'll burn through it much more than normal driving. You're probably going to be fine if you fill up right before you go, but the net and YouTube is littered with people who said "it's only 100 miles" then had to have somebody bring them back a tank of gas.
You'll be averaging about 10mph, if you take the side routes and are the kind of person to leave the engine running for the AC, you could be getting close by the end.

I wasn’t even under 1/2 in my f150 and I averaged 7.2 mpg. Tons of idling as a support vehicle to bikers.
Unless they have a particularly small fuel tank for a superduty and are deleted and rolling coal all day they will be fine.
SurfPine@reddit
Your truck, with a full fuel tank, won't get well over 150 miles?
My Superduty with 6.7L will get between 500-600 miles on a full fuel tank. Not sure why you are so worried.

I wasn’t sure how much time would be spent in 4Lo and what the mileage I would get. This is my first time doing something like this.
PonyThug@reddit
I got 7mpg in my ecoboost. I average 16mpg normally. So assume you will get roughly 40-50% your normal mpg.
What size tank do you have? I got a 36 gal so I wasn’t concerned at all.
braknstuf@reddit
It's 100 miles, you'll be fine.
case9@reddit
I've done it twice and never needed extra fuel, but brought it both times. Shit happens out there and it's not uncommon for the road to be closed. You always want to have enough fuel to be able to turn around and make it out
braknstuf@reddit
Safety factor, I understand. However even a gozilla getting 10mpg with a 30+ gallon tank would allow you to do this trip 3x.
So you carring extra fuel for someone else or covering the possibility of a fuel leak.
PonyThug@reddit
I have a f150 ecoboost on 35” tires and I averaged 7.2mpg for the 100mile offroad loop

this

Take at least 30 gallons out there and they need to be on roto packs sticking out from your truck somewhere, after that you should be good
Tyson209355@reddit (OP)
What about a snorkel and a hi-jack?
g00dmorning99@reddit
Yeah your hi jack has to be mounted on the hood before you can legally hit the trail
Medical_Apartment155@reddit
So long as you're not in 4lo the whole time you'll be perfectly fine on white rim road.
foghorn1@reddit
I did it in a jeep Gladiator with an 18 1/2gallon tank and had a little less than half a tank when I finished.
MDPeasant@reddit
Its a great trail, did you already get your overnight permits? If so which campsites did you get?
I did it in a 5th gen 4runner and didnt need extra gas. I spent the whole trail in 4LO, and hit up Long Run Canyon on the way in.
I bought a cheap VP racing "utility" jug, filled it with fuel and strapped it down in the back and emptied it as soon as I had room in the gas tank. This made me feel better, but I didnt come close to needing it. If you want to do anything other than go straight to or from a gas station in Moab it might be a good idea to carry some extra fuel.

We are staying at Potato Bottom, Hard Scrabble, and Schaefer. I’ll probably end up carrying an extra 5 gallons because I’m a worrier!
kingtuft@reddit
Agreed that you will not need to bring fuel with you as long as you fill up beforehand.
ghouly-rudiani@reddit
But it looks cool to have at least 2 extra cans on the side of the truck.
Sea_Satisfaction_475@reddit
You can sneak in a little extra by filling up at the turn off into the park.
nonamex72@reddit
Carry the extra fuel if you already have it. Better to have it and not use it than the other way around. Besides, it might help someone out there.
clauderbaugh@reddit
F350 diesel here. Given the slow speeds my fuel tank hardly even moved.
Tyson209355@reddit (OP)
Thanks. Yep, we have the camping permits already.
