MeyersonAdam@reddit
Whoever was driving the vehicle had a lot more faith than I would have that the plane wasn’t going to come to a sudden stop. I appreciate the great footage, but I would have stayed a lot farther back!
Feeling_Inside_1020@reddit
Dude looked like he was willing to risk clipping the wing just to get around him just to save a couple seconds, wild ass event be damned lol.
Source: drive in the USA
InebriatedPhysicist@reddit
In what world is a highway closed for “a couple of seconds” after an airplane lands on it?
Feeling_Inside_1020@reddit
I meant the driver about to try to go around it at the end was clipped, all to save a couple of seconds on the drive
InebriatedPhysicist@reddit
Yes, so was I. If they do not get past the plane now, they are there for hours, not seconds, while the highway is shut down.
ChangingChance@reddit
It's easily a few hours of traffic for the route.
Source: me, had a plane land hours before on a highway adjacent field and still had an extra hour to the commute.
DwightsShirtGuy@reddit
I’m convinced about 70% of people who hold valid drivers licenses in the US, shouldn’t.
yar2000@reddit
Thats what happens when your driving exam consists of only driving around the block and parking the car in a 60 mile wide parking space.
DwightsShirtGuy@reddit
I’d like to see recurrent driving training like we all have to do. But that would cost money. And as long as the gubmint gets its registrations fees it’s all good to them.
shaneknu@reddit
Kind of like in aviation, where we are required to stay current in case something like this happens.
Workman44@reddit
Recurrent testing would be a fucking godsend. At 20 and every 5 years thereafter with it increasing to every other year once you hit 65
wildmaninid@reddit
I'm shocked you're only going to 79%
Boostedbird23@reddit
That's a low estimate. The average driver in the US is a bad driver... Not mediocre... Bad. I estimate the percentage that qualify as having Medicare skill and decision-making to be less than 10% and less than 1 percent that I would say are legitimately high skill.
DwightsShirtGuy@reddit
The “average person” is bad at everything.
Apart_Olive_3539@reddit
Typical PA driver. "Why is your left wing still in the fast lane doing the speed limit, move over!"
Master_of_thought@reddit
Should but wouldn't
fuelhandler@reddit
Your faith in the other 30% is unfounded. You’re definitely an optimist.
ReallyBigDeal@reddit
I think that’s too high.
Mission-Copy5517@reddit
Probably some asshole was tailgating behind them and didn’t want to get rear ended slowing down too fast.
made3@reddit
Honestly, there are waaaay to many idiots on the roads. It's insane.
lonememe@reddit
Blows my mind seeing these dash cam vids of planes landing on freeways and people just refuse to just stop! Hit your caution lights, and slow the fuck down and give the plane a ton of room, y'all. It's not that hard. Then again, it seems like I'm in the minority since I still actually pull all the way over for ambulances and emergency vehicles and then get honked at for trying to merge back because I'm not the jackass who just slows down and rolls behind them. Da fuq people.
TheAgedProfessor@reddit
If I had to guess, it was from a police cruiser that was clearing the road for the landing. At least, I'd like to think so.
yea-that-guy@reddit
This is what a cruiser stopping highway traffic looks like. Notice how the vehicle is so far away from the hazard that you can't even see it?
GitEmSteveDave@reddit
Video says Credit Emily Rivera. If it was the police, it would say the name of the department.
IdaCraddock69@reddit
A police cruiser can also slow down? Around here we have police and CHP driving on highways specifically to slow traffic at times
TacohTuesday@reddit
Seriously. He’s just motoring along like it’s a typical Tuesday afternoon.
afriendincanada@reddit
No kidding. I’d be giving an AIRPLANE LANDING ON THE HIGHWAY a lot more room.
ionyx@reddit
He looked like he wanted to pass him! "Damn that's crazy.. now shiit get in the slow lane bro!"
DimbyTime@reddit
Definitely a BMW
phrrt@reddit

^asshoooooole
technicolortiddies@reddit
This is my favorite Reddit comment ever!
Obvious-Hunt19@reddit
Was waiting for him to pass on the left
afops@reddit
When you see an accident just happened or even about to happen and you are on d as freeway, it’s not a bad instinct to try to be the last car to pass it or you risk being stuck for many many hours if the road is blocked. Obviously you need to weigh the risks to everyone involved but I’d damn sure try to squeeze past that plane before the whole road is closed. I’d give it more space to come to a stop first and only then try to pass it. And I’d help push the damn plane aside if it means I can squeeze by (even if the pilot thinks that’s no good idea)
vacuousintent@reddit
This is terrible advice. A cat trying to be the last to pass during an accident could easily become part of the accident with their actions. Slowing down or coming to a stop is a much safer action in these situations.
afops@reddit
Yes what I’m saying is: if the alternative is waiting many hours of course you start weighing the risks.
For a plane crashing? Of course you can’t pass. But this one after safely stopping? I’m passing it.
qalpi@reddit
Right?? Driver looks like they're ready to honk and squeeze around
Thud@reddit
Based on a true story
Meaty_Wizard@reddit
Looks like they were inconvenienced and were immediately trying to pass.
Kinder22@reddit
Can a plane stop significantly faster than a car?
MeyersonAdam@reddit
If the wing clips a pole and it flips? Yes.
throwaway48159@reddit
No, the car can stop faster. Plane would tip over if it tried. But still, give them some space!
SpaceJackRabbit@reddit
Exactly. Instead I'd slow down and swerve to establish a rolling roadblock far behind that plane until cops show up.
Dismal_Scientist_CA@reddit
We don’t know what was behind the driver that needed managed with a more gradual slow down. Also need to acknowledge that an aircraft just unexpectedly dropped out of the sky and the procedure for handling such a situation isn’t exactly something Joe driver contemplates on a regular basis.
tipsy-turtle-0985@reddit
The sort of people who drive I-78 in that area are unphased by an airplane trying to slow them down!
throwaway48159@reddit
I’d put on flashers, slow down, and weave between lanes to try to stop traffic. Maybe the plane can land safely, pull to the side, and not block the lanes… but I’m gonna give it a minute to make sure.
-_-Yeeter@reddit
This reminds me of that video from Quebec where some lady is pissed a plane emergency landed in front of her on the freeway
1Crownedngroovd@reddit
Also my first thought!
JustARandomGuyReally@reddit
Not just lack of faith, but lack of common sense. It’s almost like they’re planning to just pass it too
LobsterConsultant@reddit
Seems almost like they were looking for a way to sneak around the left wingtip and ignore the situation entirely.
"Fucking planes in my commute..."
amsync@reddit
We can’t see the traffic behind him. Might not have been that simple
Trumpy_Po_Ta_To@reddit
Hmmm what’s that pedal that’s on the left called again? And, boy, would it be great if there was some sort of indicator for people behind you when you used it.
pinetashapple@reddit
Have you ever driven on the road?
MaddingtonBear@reddit
114KJ, on the way from Solberg to Allegheny County. Cruising happy at 55, and needed to get to an airport now. Looks like he was aiming for Allentown-Queen/XLL but came up a good 10 miles short.
Blueberry_Mancakes@reddit
“I don't want to land on the highway”
I don't think your plane cares what you think right now.
pisymbol@reddit
I don't think he was thinking about the plane. Hint.
Holocene98@reddit
Merges into a lane better than most drivers
pizzapromise@reddit
Wow, that went incredibly well.
Shoddy_Act7059@reddit (OP)
Yeah, remarkably smooth with little to no bouncing.
DigitalDesignerr@reddit
Pilot nailed the flare and stayed center line. High-stakes landing executed perfectly.
FatassTitePants@reddit
Kudos to the traffic ahead not freaking out and hitting the brakes.
elmwoodblues@reddit
But dashcam guy seems intent on passing. Like all PA drivers, he will camp in that left lane no matter what.
aquoad@reddit
“that asshole in the airplane just cut me off!”
badpuffthaikitty@reddit
The pilot obviously drives a BMW. He didn’t signal his turn.
Spirited_Ad_340@reddit
I once saw a slow-ish police chase going the opposite direction on the highway, maybe like 30-40mph cause the running car had its windshield obscured by the hood. Anyways, it was prime rush hour and I couldn't help but laugh at this busted up DUI vehicle on the run with 20+ cops behind being followed, closely, by an entire city's irritated AM workforce. Felt like they just wanted bro to crash and get it over with so they could blow by and get to work.
But yeah, when I see these I always wonder if the filming vehicle is just a litttllleee too excited. They didn't give a ton of room to this aircraft for sure.
SnowflakeSorcerer@reddit
How are cars behind the cops of the car they are chasing is in the opposite lane?
Nothing-Is-Boring@reddit
As in the chase was happening in the opposite lane to the commenter, not going backwards.
ThePrussianGrippe@reddit
“You selfish fucker! Now I’m going to be late for the job I hate!”
BeneficialTrash6@reddit
You know the highway is getting shut down after this. I'd've tried to squeeze past myself and save myself hours of headache.
Living_Arachnid_9140@reddit
When you see the backup forming, that instant maybe I can just slip through panic kicks in.
Appleberry-16@reddit
yeah. like stop. you don’t know if the plane is going to twist or break in pieces. good thing landing was perfect
nontruculent21@reddit
Seemed like he started slowing down at the end, maybe to bring traffic behind to a stop.
Suitable_Public8065@reddit
They even pulled over to the shoulder most skillfully.

angelmaker1991@reddit
ASAP landing too lol puh-LUNK the relief after that successful landing would have been fantastic
Elvish_Costello@reddit
I love that he pulls off onto the shoulder.
United_Juggernaut973@reddit
Someone yelled “you can’t park there” as they drove by.
FatSteveWasted9@reddit
That was me
RogLatimer118@reddit
Well he's not going to stay in the middle of the road.
ClankerCore@reddit
I hope he didn’t forget to turn his blinkers on.
jmauc@reddit
That was their emergency, they ran out of blinker fluid.
Owlthirtynow@reddit

pdxshark@reddit
I wouldn't hate driving so much if everyone merged this nicely. Well done pilot
thethirdllama@reddit
Seriously, finally someone who knows how to zipper merge.
Altruistic_Value_970@reddit
as a Pennsylvania resident its clear to me the plane is not a local
MonteBurns@reddit
Didn’t drive in the left lane going the speed limit. Clearly not from here.
Annual_Strategy_6206@reddit
Nailed it! I although I don't like the cam car crowding the plane, just stay back, you don't know what's going on.
CharleyNobody@reddit
Considering the car in the left lane never slowed down.
throwaway48159@reddit
It normally does! Something like 90% success rate, and the total number of significant injuries to motorists is like 3 ever. It’s a great option if your engine dies.
SurroundSex@reddit
I've done worse with working engine.
Twitter_2006@reddit
Absolutely.
fireproof_pyjamas@reddit
Can’t park there, mate.
Professional_Act_820@reddit
Driver with the dashcam is an asshole
Zbodownlow@reddit
Of course the person filming was moronic enough to follow the plane closely.
CorndogSurgeon@reddit
Damn! Soni have a question someone might be able to answer. All these emergency landings we see on here, how do they get these planes back to a tarmac/hanger?
Like, the one that landed on the golf course where the dude fell down the hill running towards it. How in the hell do you get a Cessna loaded and off a property 🤣. Best guess is they disassemble it and put it on a trailer. 🤷🏻♂️
technicolortiddies@reddit
I’m curious if there’s a fine for this kind of landing or in a circumstance where they might take out a sign or damage a bridge.
MetalBeholdr@reddit
There's undoubtedly an investigation, I would think punitive action would be reserved for cases where the emergency landing was deemed unnecessary or unreasonable
CorndogSurgeon@reddit
I'm sure there's a fine. Probably steep 😐
Thebraincellisorange@reddit
those wings are held on by 4 bolts.
remove bolts, disconnect the wiring harness and control linkages, you can remove the wings in a very short amount of time with a telehandler.
or if the roads are wide enough, just tow it.
m00f@reddit
If they are near an airport and the roads allow it they can just trailer it fully assembled, but I assume this is rare given the average size of a GA plane. I believe most of the time they get an A&P to come take the wings off.
PlanedPotPlays@reddit
Bro trying to complete the Pokédex of vehicles tailgated
GrahamCrackerCereal@reddit
Damn good landing honestly
EbbOwn303@reddit
When a plane has to do anything emergency landing on a highway and everything goes perfectly, how do they move the planet off said highway after the fact?
Thebraincellisorange@reddit
ran out of fuel? put more fuel in it and take off from the highway.
mechanical problem? pop the wings off, load it onto a flatbed and truck it out of there.
EbbOwn303@reddit
Would they really be allowed to just refuel and take off right from the free way?
Doufnuget@reddit
Very carefully on a flatbed truck
MikePounce@reddit
Serious question, now that the plane has landed on a highway, how do you get it out and back to an airfield? Is it even possible to put it on the back of a vehicle?
Gullible-Reference69@reddit
Honestly this happens too often.

Why is this lile the 3rd plane i have seen landing on a highway on reddit in the past week? Did they reduce regulations on inspections or something?
ExocetHumper@reddit
Nope. US has many, many small planes and every car has a camera. So every time it happens, there is footage.
AK_Sole@reddit
Dude trying to pass a place that just made an emergency landing.
Uh, can you maybe back off?
Bandin03@reddit
Maybe I'm being too optimistic but my first thought was him getting over to block traffic so they don't hit the plane.
On the other hand, I can totally see someone driving home after a long workday, seeing this and going ugh and trying to get around it.
SlothSpeed@reddit
Not to mention the aircraft doesn't have brake lights, so you have no idea if their intent is to stop right away.
David_Beroff@reddit
Right? I mean, maybe they just want to make a touch and go.
jld2k6@reddit
He doesn't wanna risk getting stuck for two hours while they figure out how to remove a plane from the highway lol
DruidDog@reddit
tbf, i don’t think the average person has a lot of experience driving with airplanes
Brodellsky@reddit
Also you really wanna keep traffic moving if there is now a literal airplane blocking some of the lanes. The vast majority of freeway accidents involve stopped/slow traffic.
We have NO idea how many people were behind the driver's POV. Anyone that's ever been rear ended is definitely not thinking "let's slow or stop on this freeway in the passing lane"
DruidDog@reddit
my guy i wasn’t planting a flag on this, i was making a light-hearted joke
Brodellsky@reddit
I mean but you weren't exactly wrong either, which is why I added some more truth to what you already said my guy
BaddDog07@reddit
Seriously man! plane could have easily clipped his wing on something and come across the entire road and this guy would have been right up in it
Thurak0@reddit
Also it probably wanted to come to a stop very much and not "drive" to the next exit immediately.
PapaCharlie23@reddit
Wow no blinker
MANPAD@reddit
Great job getting it down in one piece, looked harrowing.
PTMorte@reddit
That was a bloody perfect landing. They should hand out dead stick blackbelts or somethung to each pilot who makes it through one of these.
OkBid71@reddit
I didn't see the first local channel watermark and when the plane landed I thought they just gave him a 10.
I mean, I would have too, that was the clearest 10/10, I'm sure Russia would have dropped a 4.
bonfuto@reddit
That's a fairly steep uphill. Funny to see a landing on a road I recognize.
Open_Scallion_7306@reddit
Whoever decided to drive alongside the plane like it's just another car on the road is an idiot.
Open_Scallion_7306@reddit
Driving closer to it like an idiot.
brettscharff@reddit
I grew up right off the Bethel exit on 78. In fact, I was just up that way today.
I can’t quite exactly place where this was.
iPhones_cameras_suck@reddit
Why is this seemingly happening all the time anymore?
Thebraincellisorange@reddit
it's not.
its simply there are far more dashcams around to record it.
yolkma@reddit
serious question, how do they get the plane back to the airport now? assuming it may not have proper wing/height clearance to get back
Thebraincellisorange@reddit
unbolt the wings, load it all up onto a flatbed and drive back to the airport.
Thebraincellisorange@reddit
perfect landing.
gotta love the damn driver that does not back off at all and even gets closer to the plane that just landed on the road in front of it as it starts to lose speed.
it's unfathomable how utter selfish drivers are.
SnooStrawberries1504@reddit

Stupid ass driver
Shot_Compote_9768@reddit
Wow great job, honestly
NotACompleteDick@reddit
Seriously, well done for surviving this. I am very happy you live to fly another day.
Less seriously: Dude, what about the flare?
Ecthelion-O-Fountain@reddit
The driver recording this is a bit dumb but ok
pierogiandpoppies@reddit
for sure
davidsandbrand@reddit
This looks like a dash cam recording, not like the driver whipped out their cell phone.
Ecthelion-O-Fountain@reddit
Yeah but like a plane lands in front of them And they don’t slow down or react at all
imav8n@reddit
I really thought that the guy driving the vehicle was going to try to pass the plane on the left, so he didn’t have to deal with it
pierogiandpoppies@reddit
he probably did
TigerUSA20@reddit
The whole time, the driver is like, “Will you move over so I can pass?!? Geez!”
TacohTuesday@reddit
Maybe he thought the pilot was just doing a quick touch and go.
DynamiteWitLaserBeam@reddit

wildfire98@reddit

airfryerfuntime@reddit
He doesn't want to be stuck in traffic for 10 hours.
GitEmSteveDave@reddit
I remember the time I passed a exit just as a traffic calming crew was merging on to shut down the road. So weird seeing 4 lanes of traffic ahead of you and literally no one behind you.
BrewCityChaserV2@reddit
I mean, they could have still backed off a bit and waited for the plane to stop instead of tailgating it throughout the entire rollout.
Sooperooser@reddit
I think the camera person is driving a BMW and is already signaling to overtake.
3_if_by_air@reddit
Classic PA driver, going the speed limit in the left lane 🙄

NerdyComfort-78@reddit
We had this happen in Louisville KY in the early 2000's when a fool pilot miscalculated his fuel for his trip from I think Michigan. He was aiming for Bowman Field (LOU), when he ran out of gas and had to land on the Watterson Expressway (264). No one was hurt or killed but the dude seemed so smug that he had to pay for the plane to be removed from the freeway via a flatbed truck, after they took the wings off. Could have been much worse.
bsmknight@reddit
See folks, take note, that is how you drive, pass on the left and merge right. Oh, and um, great job on the landing too. That was amazing considering the emergency and tight space.
Particular_Ticket_20@reddit
Surprised he didnt land in the left lane.
OldManufacturer8679@reddit
Once that happens how does it get taken off the interstate? In pieces on a flatbed?
DebraBaetty@reddit
I swear I can hear the driver of that front car screaming “OH SHIT”
Thunderbird1974@reddit
Someone had to do the same thing recently in Florida and didn’t get it done this perfectly. There were more cars on the road and the pilot landed on one.

Yeah - one split second problem with that plane and that car would crash.
nc-help_me_help_you@reddit

LEM1978@reddit
Clearly. Point is you don’t know what will happen next. Driver is going as if it will be a smooth landing, but if it loses lift or explodes or whatever, it can behave unpredictably.
Driver should’ve just slammed on brakes to stop and give the plane all the room

I drove past this in the morning in the opposite lane just a minute or two after it happened (there were only a half dozen cars stopped behind the plane by then). Saw the pilot doing his shut down checklist. Seemed like he was nice and calm. I also made note that there were phone wires above that overpass (just out of frame in the video) that he must have just barely cleared.
pj1972@reddit
Doesn’t even signal. What a dick!
Kind-Shallot3603@reddit
Butter landing. Love to see no one get hurt and the plane not destroyed
rocket_randall@reddit
Pilot failed to signal before changing lanes. Other than that, great job
JellyfishFluffy9387@reddit
Do they still have to pay the tolls?

hogear0@reddit
Nice save. Like, very nice.
CharAznableLoNZ@reddit
No flaps but on the other hand maybe he knew he wouldn't clear the bridge with them. Either way, good landing given the circumstances.
iBeFlying676@reddit
Short field landing over a 50ft obstacle. Now I know why I had to practice this so much. Perfectly executed.
mrspaznout@reddit
Slow down for the aircraft that just landed in the road in front of you, maybe?
ttystikk@reddit
Pilot didn't get his flaps down, likely contributing to the abrupt touchdown. But I'm guessing he was kinda busy trying to clear the overpass and get it safely on the ground.
All in all, a solid landing in an emergency situation.
jonnyrottwn@reddit
Honey?...I gotta let you go, im on the I-78, I gotta catch a plane!

Ok so that's not Berks County. Cant even get that one right can ya

I’m so disappointed when I see these videos and the car behind is trying to still pass. Dude, slow down, give them some room. I dunno, pull over behind them and check on them? Jesus Christ.
LigerSixOne@reddit
Jesus, give ‘em some room.
SnooShortcuts1572@reddit
Looks like someone had to take a poop.
Boostedbird23@reddit
Heck of a landing!
brilliantNumberOne@reddit
What do they do to clear the plane from the highway when this happens? Pop the wings off? I can’t imagine they’d be able to get permission to take off from the highway.
Butt_Smurfing_Fucks@reddit
And the dash cam Driver felt it was OK to get that close. Got it. 🙄
Free_Break8482@reddit
Who are these people who see a plane do an emergency landing on the highway in front of them and don't slow down and pull over? Do you want to die?
G3rmanaviator@reddit
Love how the guy with the dashcam seemed annoyed and wanted to pass on the left 😂
GroundedGerbil@reddit
Skill and luck aligned on that one! Time to check your drawers lol.

Nope, GA had much higher crash rates in the past, it's just that everyone has cameras everywhere to record things

Yep 112 or 114, impossible to tell from this angle.
sexuallyactivepope@reddit
N114KJ so I guess 114
cruiserflyer@reddit
Yup, great plane.
spavolka@reddit
Does anyone here know how they transport this plane back to an airfield? The wing width would be an extremely wide load. I assume the wings are detached and it goes on a trailer or big roll back?? TIA

Lack of flare is concerning. Pilot needs to brush up on their landing technique.

Cool. I wish I could do that. But I’d probably get in trouble for doing it if it was unnecessary, huh?

Berks county is definitely going to give him a speeding ticket, he can admit guilt and pay over the phone or online, however if he believes he is not guilty or the situation an exception he is going to have to write and sign a document declaring his plea of not-guilty, and mail that with a check in the value of the offense plus $50 -no online, over the phone or in person non-guilty pleas.
Flygurl620se@reddit
Great job!
randytc18@reddit
Is it standard no flaps for emergency landings in this plane? Obviously they had a lot going on with a great outcome.
BB62SWO@reddit
Beautiful, textbook emergency landing
AtBat3@reddit
Well I get to drive on that highway tomorrow so I’ll assume we got our share of plane landings out of the way for the weekend

I experienced my first semi experience like this yesterday ? I was driving along this same old, 2 Lane road out in the rural area that I live in. There are residential houses on each side of the road. However, I guess I never noticed a big old field on one side of the road. They had set up cones that I don’t think were there before. And as I’m driving, I literally am forced to look up as I see this same kind of plane coming down towards me except perpendicular to me. And it descends literally right over the top of my car and lands where those cones had made a makeshift landing strip in the field to the left of me as I’m driving.
I’m no aviation nerd or expert. I have no idea what they were doing, but that was just wild and trippy to be that close to that. I have seen videos like this on the Internet and so the first thing that popped into my head was oh no is this somebody trying to make an emergency landing and I was trying to figure out my best course of action to make sure I wasn’t in the way. But of course, after a few moments, I saw the cones where they were landing and they landed safe and sound. But all I could think was imagine if something went wrong they really had no wiggle room for error being so close to the road as well as close homes.
m149@reddit
spectacular.
Wonder if the person in the car with the camera got by. They sure didn't seem like they wanted to stop.
