What’s the most common car you see in the US these days?
Posted by Unitedfinanace@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 310 comments
I think the Ford F-150 is the most popular vehicle in the US, especially because pickup trucks are very common there.
Dylan_bowie12@reddit
Yeah, pickups. All sorts of Ram 1500’s, Silverado 1500’s and F-150’s.
Affectionate_Ad2145@reddit
The only great part about high gas prices lol
Portland420informer@reddit
My modern Ford pickup actually gets really great gas mileage.
SadAfternoon5184@reddit
My car gets 55 mpg.
MFAD94@reddit
Low 20’s MPG is not good. Especially when less than half the people who drives trucks actually use them like trucks. They’re big stupid boxes
kyson1@reddit
For the capability offered, what else can match it and still gets better than 25 mpg unloaded on the highway? I'd absolutely rock a 2.7/10 spd F150 if they had enough tow capacity for my trailers, they're a great compromise vehicle for the majority of people that don't tow over 10k lbs.
MFAD94@reddit
Nothing can beat it, it sounds like you actually would need a truck. I’m talking about the people who literally only use their trucks to commute on pavement and don’t tow or haul anything, it doesn’t make sense
W2Sun@reddit
I always wonder who these mystery people are because I've never known anyone who owned a truck and never used it for truck things. Even if it's only a couple times a year, the utility is unmatched. Most people can't afford a truck on the side, so of course they are going to commute and such in it.
tony22233@reddit
At least 20
Portland420informer@reddit
Over 55MPG in the city which is in fact “At least 20”.
Cheeko914@reddit
Doubt
Portland420informer@reddit
https://imgur.com/a/SWfcrqo
Connect-Ask-3820@reddit
That’s on 20 miles driven… I could get a Lamborghini to read 60mpg like that. The best selling F-150 package is the XLT with the 5.0L coyote engine, which the EPA measures to get 15-18mpg cut/highway.
Portland420informer@reddit
It was a city run. That was one way, it got over 55MPG on the way back also. I got over 45MPG on a 65MPH highway run to the airport and back.
https://imgur.com/a/9EqQPmo
Connect-Ask-3820@reddit
I’m sorry, I just don’t buy that a pickup truck is getting better mileage than a Camry hybrid in city conditions. But you should have your truck submitted for research because this could revolutionize the car industry. I’ve been eagerly waiting to get 60-80mpg out of a sedan.
Portland420informer@reddit
I literally posted photos of the MPG. Light foot and milking electric mode makes a huge impact.
ProtomanKnight@reddit
wow you weren't lying, impressive honestly
Goivacon2@reddit
Tbf that’s a maverick which is basically an escape with a bed, pretty capable and will do what most people need out of a truck tho
Traditional_Can_3983@reddit
I was so ready to buy one at the originally listed price and then the dealerships decided to make them cost 30-40k.
Goivacon2@reddit
Yup, I love the trucks but they are basically the same price as a ranger and with a ranger you get a much more capable truck
Portland420informer@reddit
25,000 OTD after tax. Ranger was significantly more.
Goivacon2@reddit
Did you get it used? I cannot find one for anywhere near that price around me. An XL maverick at my dealership is about 41k CAD, an XL ranger is 47k CAD
Portland420informer@reddit
Brand new in 2023.
Nolan1995@reddit
Mavericks are more “compact SUV with a bed” than truck to be fair
Goivacon2@reddit
Yeah it definitely is but I think most people would see spending an extra 6 grand for a ranger as “not that much more for a more spacious and capable truck that isn’t that much worse on gas”
Nolan1995@reddit
No im definitely on your side on this. If you want to enjoy all the benefits of having a truck, then get the Ranger. People get trucks for their capabilities, not value. If you want to chase value, get a prius
Goivacon2@reddit
Absolutely, I think if the maverick was 5-7k cheaper it would be a pretty nice proposition compared to Ranger but at 41k I just can’t
tony22233@reddit
try 80 MPH on the freeway.
motorman87@reddit
Lol ok.
Changetheworld69420@reddit
My buddy put a lift and 35’s on his ‘23 and it gets 14mpg now haha my ‘97 gmc k1500 does better than that, gotten over 20 on highway trips. What’s a stock ford getting these days?
Bigsmalltallall@reddit
What? 25 mpg on the highway? Lol
Portland420informer@reddit
About double that in the city. A bit more actually
https://imgur.com/a/SWfcrqo
Bigsmalltallall@reddit
Wow that's alot better than I thought. I googled it and it said the best config was like 25 highway. My fault for trusting the AI bullshit tho. You'd think I'd be able to get that right tho. Lol I'm not against trucks at all. Want a f150 soonish. My last full size was an 03 with the 5.4 and it was a pig. Good truck tho.

Better-Credit6701@reddit
They have to drink to drown out their sorrows after looking at the latest repair bill.
maxxbenzz@reddit
No kidding. 🤣
Informal_Ad4399@reddit
I have a 2010 Ram 1500 crew cab. Original owner. I don't drive like shit. I don't drink. I actually hardly drive because I can't work due to medical issues.
Never been in an accident at all. I started driving in 98 at age 19.
I am anal retentive about maintenance. I started my AF career as an aircraft mechanic and I bring that over, plus more. Vehicle has a 2/4 lower for better handling and view.
I keep racing (the above truck, soon to have an 8 speed and 392) to the track. I might go a little more on Snoqulamie if traffic is very light (rare), weather is crystal clear, and road is bone dry. I don't dodge in and out of traffic. I go over that pass once a year at most. Usually for doctor appointments.
I get that Ram, 2500s in particular, have a high dui rate, but the generalization is frustrating.
SpankyDammit@reddit
Yeah, so many posts are either rage bait or ineptitude. “You people suck because broad generalization since I’m angry about something having nothing to do with you specifically and internet anonymity lets me be an ass!”
Gotta love it.
SpankyDammit@reddit
It’s funny how people blame every truck on the road when many of us have to daily a truck for work or because it’s all we have. No, I’m not trading it in to drive something someone else thinks is better.
It happens to be a white RAM 2500 because it’s what I could afford and would tow the trailer I was forced to live in when the company I worked for shuttered its doors. I don’t drive it like I stole it and do everything I can to treat other drivers with respect. I even use turn signals.
sharpshooter999@reddit
I got into an argument with some anti-truck wack-a-doodle that said I should get a Mercedes Sprinter van to haul my tools. Sure, but then how do I pull my gooseneck trailers? There answer? I don't need them apparently or I should just rent a truck when I do. I get the truck hate for all the pavement princesses in cramped, urban settings, but some of these truck haters are thicker than skidsteer tires....
NOT_Frank_or_Joe@reddit
Same as any other argument in this site. Everyone is an expert on everything. When it comes to driving, most men think they are a step away from being a pro despite no training, no knowledge and no experience.
RED-ELPH@reddit
And the ones with jobs.
JJ-Dream-Big@reddit
A truck doesn’t define who someone is. People choose vehicles based on their needs, preferences, or lifestyle. I’ve seen just as many difficult or inconsiderate people driving regular cars as well.
Yes, certain patterns or tendencies can exist, but making quick judgments about people based on that is what concerns me more. It’s easy to generalize, especially online, but that kind of labeling doesn’t really help us understand individuals. I’m more cautious about forming opinions too quickly than about what someone chooses to drive.
not_asleep_yet@reddit
I see so many more SUVs. It’s like the preferred vehicle for women.
nodnarb5792@reddit
99 percent dont even need the trucks people who buy lambos just to bring them to shows get more proper use than the truck drivers they would've been just fine with an suv which are superior then trucks cause they dont use the bed anyways

Depends where you are. Here in Texas, yeah it’s pickups in general. Where I was from in California, it was Accords and Camrys. When I lived in NY, it was a lot of Altimas, Kia Optimas, and Chevy Equinoxes
ExcellentMaize4141@reddit
Can't forget about the GM Full Size SUVs in Texas. Tahoes, Suburbans, Yukons
Recent_Permit2653@reddit
Sorta. I always get the impression that people (dudes mostly) feel like they’re settling for an SUV here when they really want a pickup. There’s a lot of rural cosplay in my part of East Texas.
Ch4rlie_G@reddit
I’ll die on the hill that a suburban is more useful than a pickup. Same towing capacity, same hauling capacity, a TON more storage and seating, and all of the storage is enclosed so protected from the elements and thieves.
Can’t tow a fifth wheel is the only downside I see
Southern-Usual4211@reddit
This, here in NM for Santa Fe its Subarus, jeeps and Prius Albuquerque its F150s, Silverados and Rams it varies greatly as does the age of cars on the road out west tons of older cars as there is no rust and further east and north older vehicles vanish due to the weather/salt use in the winter
Time-Calligraphero@reddit
Exactly. People just don’t ‘see’ Subarus but they’re everywhere

thatisgoldjerrygold@reddit
Why is New York filled with such shittier cars? Why would anyone choose those over the Toyota/Honda model equivalent. I get it for Texas, and Californias car selection seems to make sense for economy reasons, but you’re saying New York is just basic cars by shitty brands 😂 There’s genuinely zero reasons you should ever by any of those 3 cars you listed
Recent_Permit2653@reddit
Probably because the road salt eats cars, so it almost doesn’t matter what you get. If you buy something used, I would count on five years max out of whatever it is. 10-15 year old cars are already in horrific shape.
thatisgoldjerrygold@reddit
I wouldn’t want to drive a Kia for 6 months, much less 5 years
Recent_Permit2653@reddit
I agree, mostly, but I’ll also throw in that I was nowhere near NYC, I was in western NY. Very rust belt vibe, a lot of people in perilous economic circumstances. Beggars can’t be choosers. Cheap cars are cheap for a reason, and it seems like a lot of them ended up in western ny lol
gmoreschi@reddit
A lot of them end up in every rural area of every state. Go into the cities in western NY and there's a lot less pickups and cheap cars etc. Go into the rural towns? Crappy cars galore. Even the new ones are crappy models. This is in just about every state. There's also not Honda/Toyota etc. dealers all over the place in the rural towns, but there is always a HUGE GM, KIA, Hyundia dealers everywhere.
Recent_Permit2653@reddit
Hard disagree! Take a spin around Rochester. The city, not the burbs. Cheap crap everywhere. The burbs have slightly nicer stuff depending on the suburb, but then get on out past Victor or Chili, and you’re back to tons of cheap crap, but it’s other cheap crap. Rochester proper is a Nissan/Kia town for sure. With the odd TrailBlazer thrown in. Equinoxes were for the city folks who were doing more OKish
Shrimptanks@reddit

I used to drive à gray RAV4 and seemed there were always several in any parking lot. I added a simple brush guard on the front and à red license plate frame in the back which made it easier to pick out in a crowd. Great car, now driven by daughter.
silveronetwo@reddit
Camrys will consistently be the ones responsible for the passing lane going the same speed as slow lane for miles.

Depends on where you live. Her in Maine it’s Subaru or an “american” pickup. Chevy, ram, ford

F-150 is ususlly (always?} the best selling vehicle in the USA and is most commonly used for work or personal transportation so it is the most common vehicle on the street.
BC999R@reddit
It varies hugely by state or especially locale. Where I am in California, of late-model cars it’s mostly pickups, especially F150 and Tacoma, RAV4, Corolla, Civic, Tesla Model 3 and Y. Plus lots of generic Kia and Hyundai. For some reason Camry and Accord are less popular. In some neighborhoods, not mine, Tesla predominates and in fact the Model Y is the often best-selling car in the state, and the Rivian R1S is the best selling luxury SUV in California, presumably outselling Range Rover, BMW X-series and Escalade.
Intelligent-Ad-6734@reddit
Whatever car your own at the time 😂 certainly seems like they're everywhere after you buy.

I live in Boston, so I don't see as many trucks as people in the suburbs. Most people here drive sedans/hatchbacks/crossovers/SUVs. I definitely see a lot of Toyota Corollas and Camrys.
dumpitdog@reddit
The Boston area is the only place I've been that I actually see a large number of Polestars. Nothing that a majority but you won't go weeks without seeing one and the rest of us.
ExcellentMaize4141@reddit
Everyone in Massachusetts drives a 2019-2025 Toyota Rav4 XLE Hybrid.
Due_Attention_4886@reddit
Yeah there are a ton of Rav4s--that's probably the most common car here but there's a lot of automobile diversity on the roads here. I don't know that any of my co-workers drive them--more Jeeps, Mazdas, and Teslas.

Tesla Model Y (San Jose, CA). By far. I was driving on Page Mill Rd in Palo Alto last year and there were 8 random Teslas in a row in the lane next to me.

Toyota Carolla, F150s Rams and them pesky Nissan Altimas with half the back bumper missing and 45 plates on it.

GlobalTapeHead@reddit
Where I live it’s Tesla. They are everywhere. You will literally see 3 of them in a row lined up at a red traffic light with at least one or two on the other side.
vtmass@reddit
My neighborhood I see mainly Audi and Volvo but it’s a wealthy neighborhood so that skews it
Erudicial_Extreme@reddit
The boring trucks and SUVs. The auto industry makes more money by selling us these pedestrian killers instead of our governments funding transit and keeping cars a hobby.
willc38@reddit
Outside NYC I see mostly rav4, crosstrek, model y, and the popular pickups
WhenVioletsTurnGrey@reddit
Subaru & Tesla. Rarely see trucks in the city. .mostly in the lying areas where you would see Subaru as well. So, id go With Subaru, overall
TRAVERSER575@reddit
My quick response was say half ton pickups ( mainly f150 or Silverados) though down here in Las Cruces NM most of the population is quite under the national wage gap and mostly I’ve noticed that there’s mainly IKEA or Hyundai sedans. Like 7 out of 10.

CAR? Probably the Honda Civic.
Vehicle overall? Gotta be the f150 or Chevy 1500. Have one of the latter myself., strictly used as a work truck tho. I daily a Ford fiesta ST.
jrileyy229@reddit
You could have just googled it. No matter how you ask the question, Ford trucks have been the #1 selling vehicle every year for 40+ years.... So obviously it's the most common vehicle
T_Rey1799@reddit

Every car is a small, gray SUV in most parts of the US. Rogue, Envista, Sportage, Tuscon, CRV, RAV4, CX-5, Trax, etc. Throw in some other vehicles like the Ram 1500, Accord, Camry, Tacoma, Elantra, K5 and that’s pretty much 99% of traffic.
Batetrick_Patman@reddit
The CRV and RAV4 and the other compact crossovers have pretty much become the new NPC car. The most default boring car.
TurkishSwag@reddit
Yup, they are great cars, but very boring to drive. Typical “appliance”-style vehicles. I’ve also noticed CRV drivers make up an overwhelming majority of left lane campers near me. Not sure if it’s correlation or causation but CRV owner’s are not good drivers from what I’ve seen.
Batetrick_Patman@reddit
CRV, rav4, Tucson, Trax. Pretty much any small SUV. It’s become the default car displacing the Camry as the NPC car.

It depends on where you live. It’s Pick-up trucks and jeeps where I live now. But when I lived in California, it was a Prius.

Sure there are a lot of pickups. But compactish SUVS outnumber them by ALOT.
