evil_moron@reddit
There's a shortage of drivers in our industry. You didn't flip the truck and you didn't hurt anybody else. You may get a ticket for blocking lanes of travel. Your employer will probably not fire you for sliding off the road and needing a tow unless they have you on camera doing something stupid at the time that caused it. If they do fire you, you'll find another job pretty quick. Like one poster above said, learn from it and keep on trucking
oneshadeoff@reddit
There's people that still believe this bullshit?
daemonescanem@reddit
Im 25 years in and that lie has been repeated every year of my career.
When you see an article talking about this. Its always some random truckers association. But if you look up that associations funding they are all bankrolled by trucking companies. IE astro-turfed.
By making it seem as if there is a driver shortage companies suppress drivers pay.
DanimalPlanet42@reddit
If there was such a shortage id imagine no company driver would be paid under 1.00 a mile
daemonescanem@reddit
Pay & benefits would sky rocket and working conditions would be very driver retention centric.
Remember when ELD was coming online? People freaked but ELD has made our time more valuable, not more cheating on logs to make ends meet.
SH_SWH@reddit
There is no shortage of drivers. Period.
skyfly89@reddit
My guy. Youâll be alright. I jack knifed myself into a Texas DOT and Iâm still driving. Just depends on the situation
ignoreme010101@reddit
are they ok?
skyfly89@reddit
Yes fortunately no one was injured. He had just got back in his SUV like 30 seconds before. I had come up over a hill on an accident that had already happened involving another semi that had flipped.
SovereignOfSelf7@reddit
I donât think so, you might get fired but I donât think this counts as a recordable DOT accident somebody correct me if Iâm wrong
Saaaaaaaammmmmmmm@reddit
I think it depends on if itâs towed or not
nicerakk@reddit
Getting pulled out of the ditch isn't considered being towed
RectumRavager69@reddit
Depends entirely on company policy and whether or not they report it as an accident on your record, although as long as a vehicle isn't disabled and nobody is injured it's not an accident as far as DOT cares.
ignoreme010101@reddit
fingers crossed OP can drive off that scene!!
FWD_to_twin_turbo@reddit
Damaging a highway barrier makes it recordable iirc.
robexib@reddit
It's recordable if a vehicle is towed, an injury requiring medical attention, or a death happens.
That truck might get towed.
Gr00veChild@reddit
I was told anything involving a "nurse, hearse or a tow" is a dot recordable. The tow meaning it is towed away due to damage, so I'd say 50/50
GringoPanda@reddit
It is a recordable accident under DOT IF there is property damage or injury. If the cable barrier was damaged, it's property of the state.
sparrow_42@reddit
Maybe donât use the phrase âFIRST jackknifeâ in front of your boss or the insurance guy.
Top_Roll_6136@reddit
Up to your company and their insurance. No one here knows. It really depends on accounting at the end of the day and your record with the company. I'm sure they will rollback the camera đ sh*t happens. No going back. Hoping the best. Sorry this happened.
lemmeatem6969@reddit
Dude, you just get pulled out. Itâs not a big deal. Happens to all of us

Person where about to start driving flipped his truck and they just made him take a road test. This company has been great so far. Come out here!
Str8Lurkn_@reddit (OP)
Where?
Diligent_Memory_755@reddit
Millis transfer. Everyone in the company is really kind. They didnât bs me about anything. So far they seem honest and for my first Cdl gig Iâm starting off at .62 cpm doing regional 5 days out and two days home. Back Friday night leave Monday.
Str8Lurkn_@reddit (OP)
Yeah heartless express owns them and I quit heartland because they suck.
Diligent_Memory_755@reddit
You did? What was bad about them? Iâll know soon enough when I start with my trainer in two weeks.
Str8Lurkn_@reddit (OP)
Pay is like $800 a week only 2,500 miles if your lucky. Some loads are short hauls but end up taking all day and you chase trailers. And you dont really get your two days off. They want you back in the truck like 2am monday morning basically a 34.
Diligent_Memory_755@reddit
Interesting. What was your cpm pay? My recruiter did tell me at least what to expect miles wise. I respected the honesty. Plus I just want the experience and didnât want to do prime, swift, western express.
Mandrillll@reddit
You and a hundred other drivers had the same thing happen that day. Not everyone looses their job from one of those. Unless you were doing something really bad before it happened, like speeding, detracted, driving like a mad man. Doesn't look like alot of damage happened I'm sure you'll be fine.

JackyOctavius@reddit
I mean, if you want to get real technical, a strict company would say that he was "driving too fast for conditions."
1morepl8@reddit
Everyone would, but fucking up is a sliding scale.
brandmonkey@reddit
Doesn't look like much damage If your company is half decent you should be fine.
zillskillnillfrill@reddit
Once you've cooked you usually get eaten
SlothyTendecies@reddit
Depends on how much damage there is from that cable. That's the only thing that kept you from flipping over so there is no telling if you'll have to be towed or not.

jmd1612@reddit
Boomer weirdo man just cause you donât talk like something doesnât mean language doesnât change over time. Iâm sure you use slang too whether itâs country bumpkin bullshit or whatever I can think of 1 million other words besides cooked that would maybe change a hiring decision.
jabber1990@reddit
you must not be a professional driver, because you have to act like one at ALL times,
Str8Lurkn_@reddit (OP)
Im not interested in practicing âproper English â 2/47 and my vernacular its pretty suburb.
jmd1612@reddit
I am a professional driver and I donât say the word cooked Iâm just saying itâs modern time slang some people do talk like that. My point is cooked is not a bad slang in for you to say like that it can affect your job is weird Heâs just a young kid in a bad situation asking for advice on Reddit heâs not sitting in a meeting with his boss, talking slang I guarantee a lot of of your employees if you are an employer or if you were say a lot worse things than cooked even though Iâm not gonna control nobodyâs speech, whether I own a company and have employees or not, but I would fire somebody for cursing, which Iâm sure every one of your employees you have would or has done at some point before I fired somebody for saying cooked
Free-Big-8709@reddit

Free-Big-8709@reddit
Also did you receive any citations
lottanadatosay@reddit
Did you get cited by the highway patrol for anything?
Str8Lurkn_@reddit (OP)
Obstruction of traffic
lottanadatosay@reddit
Itâs not going to harm you getting a new job, unless there was a chain requirement and you werenât chained. The company might can you, but they can fire anyone for anything. But shouldnât hurt future job opportunities. Accidents happen in rough weather that are out of your control.
nicerakk@reddit
Learn how to fall on the sword real good. You might have a chance at keeping your job. Hopefully you have good standing and are known for being an easy going, punctual money maker for them. It also helps if you have passing roadside inspections under your belt. No over speeds, distracted driving, HOS violations or anything else negative from their driver monitoring.
It pays to be a top tier driver with your company. Be known for the guy they can call to ensure a load gets done when they need someone to save the company's ass. That's how you don't get fired when accidents happen. Their impression of you as a driver matters. If you are always complaining and difficult to work with, you will be dropped like a bad habit
ignoreme010101@reddit
also seems to help with being treated well in general, getting accommodated for time off, helps REAL well with getting preferential loads....always amazes me how many people are unreliable and/or have attitude with the office/dispatch, always seemed like such a low-hanging fruit so far as making life better at work which is most of your existence if you're OTR lol
driverman42@reddit
What happens depends on company policy, insurance company policy, your record, how long you've been with the company, what you were doing at the time, how much damage to the unit, andcwesther conditions.
Getting ticketed will also have a bearing on the company's decision.
Good luck.
kurt_cobainqc@reddit
Bruh like it your fault. I mean yeahh but it not like you meant it đ
WolvTheHero@reddit
How many accidents are there where the person meant it?
kurt_cobainqc@reddit
You would be suprised
meizhong@reddit
Once, in my first year, I put the truck into some deep mud and was stuck in there real good. I called a tow truck to pull me out and the company never new shit. Another time that same year, I got my open trailer doors too close to the trailer doors in the next dock I was backing into, and scratched their shit all up, I gave that driver a couple bills and the company never heard about that one either.
Of course, it may be beyond the average driver's budget to get out of the particular mess you seem to be in, but if you can just be pulled out back onto the road.........
Str8Lurkn_@reddit (OP)
I got fired yall. So western express? Swift? What are my chances?
WaywardKingJ@reddit
How much experience do you have?
NoCommunicationPro@reddit
Sorry to hear that. Curious about how the conversation went? Did they just terminate you without explanation?
Str8Lurkn_@reddit (OP)
Basically said âi dint eant to have this conversation â if need a reference I can helpâ so I said im fired i figured that and that was the call
Str8Lurkn_@reddit (OP)
Yes
lord_nuker@reddit
That sucks, everyone can and should be allowed to do mistakes as long as it doesnât hurts other people or totaling the load, truck and trailer. Was there any damage to the truck or trailer, or was in an condition to just be dragged out of the ditch and driven again?
Chingasupinchemadre@reddit
Youâll be fine bud. The industry is a lot more forgiving (unless death happened) than people make it out to be. You may have lowered your options as far as companies that will take you, but trust and believe, someone out there will hire you. Even the worst of the worst get jobs at shady af companies.
Robots_Never_Die@reddit
Had a few drivers explode a dry van hitting a bridge and not lose their job at FedEx Frieght so you're probably ok.
xur_ntte@reddit
Itâs bad weather itâs not a dot and it just going to be nerves and how you feel about driving again
Str8Lurkn_@reddit (OP)
What are the OK second chance companies BESIDES WE?
NoCommunicationPro@reddit
I heard in trucking school covenant is one but they mainly do teams as far as I know.
RoadAegis@reddit
Nah you're fine. The company will certainly drug test you, pretty standard for Crashes. As long as you pass the Drug screen you're fine.
Most companies will Hire you even IF your company drops you and that's probably not too likely. It's a jacknife, the cab will need a Tow and some work but it should mostly be salvageable.

Good eyes. I didn't see the cable. It's hard to tell where the cable is past the rip in the hood. Definitely damaged it tho. This is gonna cost the company even more. Most likely on OP record because of it. "Western Express here I come"

LuffysRubberNuts@reddit

robexib@reddit
Is your career over? Probably not, but you're going to have a rough time in the short term if you're fired. If a singular jack knife was enough to end careers, there'd be far fewer truckers out there right now. A lot of folks here might have a hard time admitting it, but a very large proportion of us have definitely jack knifed at least once.
Take it as a lesson to slow the fuck down in bad weather and do not be afraid to say no to driving in dangerous conditions.
ignoreme010101@reddit
am not trying to emphasize it as worse than it is, but cmon 99% of drivers never jackknife i mean i can make winter runs from coast to coast and only see a couple incidences, more often is seeing zero jack knifes, if it's an awful storm maybe a few.... Maybe you're regional in WA or something that skews things but strictly by the #'s there is no way #drivers-jackknifed is >1%

I let a guy go for Rolling truck he had worked here 2 months. He thought he would be cute a year later he bought his own truck then called me crying because he couldnât get insurance. Saying he had put 5k down and was gonna loose it. I said that is on you. Insurance keeps track of those things
angelofragnarok@reddit
Depends on the company. It also depends on whether they have cameras, what the conditions were, and what you were doing at the time it happened.
I had an incident once where a 40 mph wind kicked my empty trailer tires off the road and into a muddy shoulder, which then pulled me into a ditch off the shoulder. Spooked the hell out of me, threw my wife around in the cab, and we ended up jackknifed about ten feet from a tree. I thought my career was over. Police and fire were called, the road was blocked while we got pulled out. The officer and I were hiking in muddy slop checking for damage to the truck or trailer. By some miracle I jackknifed it perfectly to where, aside from deep mud, there was no damage. The officer wrote me a âcitizenâs assistanceâ ticket as proof that something happened, and I reported everything as it happened to my dispatcher.
End result was no injuries, no damages, no hit to my CDL, and I kept driving for them. Still do, actually.
wtf_1s_happening_rn@reddit

Thatâs what insurance is for. If you were fucking around and have a driver facing camera youâre probably cooked. Road conditions look a little shitty so thatâs in your favor. looks worse than it is, pullout should be fine and easy, damage doesn't look too bad, odds are you're not fired unless you were speeding or on phone.
Environmental-Pear40@reddit
Well, first you have to tell your boss and they're going to bitch you out. Afterwards whatever law enforcement is there has to by law take you to the back of the trailer and just put one in your head. It's kind of like with race horses that break a leg. Though if you're cool with them they'll at least give you a cigarette first. Horses don't get that, the tyranny of thumbs.
Nah but for real it's not the end of a career. Unless you killed someone, then you're fucked. It is going to look bad on you for a little bit and it might restrict your ability to get jobs. As far as I know all weather accidents are considered preventable.
If you have any evidence that you where pressured to drive in unsafe conditions by your dispatch you should definitely save them now and text him to someone you know you can trust like your family, so that there is a copy.

Depending on the circumstances, you might not be fired. If you are lucky enough to keep your job, consider yourself on thin ice for the next six months if not a year.
Far more likely you're fired though. You're looking at either applying for a second chance company like Western Express or finding a new line of work.
truckingon@reddit
The last place this driver needs to be is on thin ice.
bumblesski@reddit
Like everyone else is saying, get yourself winched out, get towed if it isn't safe to drive. Let the boss know exactly what happened, and right now, not tomorrow. Like others said, you'll probably still have a job, but on thin ice. Maybe start looking.
And slow TF down in bad weather. If you can't handle it, don't drive in it. No shame in shutting down, at least nothing like you're feeling now.
If you learned your lesson today, good. You'll be a better driver. Your boss might be thinking the same. If he thinks you're an idiot that'll do this again, we'll...
Be smart. Good luck! You'll be fine.
MemphisMane901@reddit
Go straight to jail. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200
Allie_Lane@reddit
Mistakes are part of the business. You lost control in slippery weather; shit happens. This doesn't make you a bad driver, and it doesn't mean you will get fired. Every employer has their "hard limits" on accidents they won't tolerate. My company, for example, will immediately terminate you if you rear end anyone, even if you barely tap them. So I can't speak to your company's hard limits. But if they do fire you, assuming this is your first big mistake, just keep applying.
From this point forward, my advice is to not be too hard on yourself. Everyone makes mistakes. I have been driving for 12 years. In my first nine months I bumped a pole with the side of my trailer because I didn't turn out wide enough, and I backed over the hood of a car behind me because I didn't see them pull up. I didn't get fired for either scenario. I owned up to both, and learned. Now I am home every day and make six figures a year. So use me as an example and don't let this define your career.
Large_Spinach6069@reddit
You're cooked. The increased cost of insurance for a driver with a massive claim will price you out of the industry.
You're now a higher risk driver with higher premiums. Lots of other drivers without accidents will out compete you for employment.
Sorry OP. It's the end of the road for now.
bullpupsquishy@reddit
Hope you got enough money for a ticket home

It's still on the wheels. Call the wrecker and make sure there's no major damage. If not, make your delivery a day late.
Your company will likely frown on this. Check your telemetrics. Determine you were at fault then make their decision.
In the future, if you can't see the black on the interstate, shut down and tell dispatch. If you feel uncomfortable driving in adverse conditions, shut down and call dispatch. Always explain every decision you make is for SAFETY.

Your boss eats a winchout. You possibly get a driving too fast for conditions citation. Life goes on.

Nothing, if they insist on you driving in shitshow and all the esp/tc and other bs makes no difference. Tell them to fuck off

Where in the fuck did that cable coming out of the right side of the cab come from?
AmericanLobsters@reddit
Itâs one of those cable guards designed to keep you from crossing the interstate median.
niagaragagarafalls@reddit
Probably one of those highly effective vehicle stopping cable barriers.Â

It all depends on why it happened and your employer. Looks like damage is minimal - just be calm and profession and own up to whatever part you played - it is super terrifying but if you learn from it - it will make you a a better driver.

Career isn't over. Although it should be said that you shouldn't have been driving in those conditions.
